- CAT D11R. Watch as I meet with the Fowler Brothers and ask them all about this massive machine and what it takes to deep rip the ground in preparation for an almond orchard. To say these machines are massive is an understatement. Most people don’t consider this a farm tractor, but here in California, we do. Tell the Fowler Brothers California Farmer sent you! bit.ly/fowlerbrothersfarming

My name is Ryan Valk and I am a California farmer. Most important to me though, I am a husband, and a father. Many people that I have met in my life have told me that when they thought of California, they thought of a crowded city or a beach covered in surfers. What you may not know is that California is the leading state in agricultural production! We have an extremely rich history of farming here in the "Golden State". My goals with this channel are to share my family's story of our farm/ranch here in the Central Valley of California, to share cool videos of the day to day operations and grind of a California farmer, and to explore other farms and ranches throughout my area. If you enjoy tractors, trucks, farming, learning, exploring, life lessons and experiences, and a good laugh, this is the place for you.
I know these machines are big but seeing people right next to them really shows how massive they are.
lol yeah even next to cars
I worked as an engineer for Cat back in the day. Awesome company and equipment!!!
A 3208 has 636 cubic inches where a 3508 has 2105 cubic inches. Just a little difference in horse power. Love that yellow iron.
just shows this guy dont know what he talking about....
I didn't know the cubic ins but I did know a 3208 doesn't have that much Hp . A 3208 was a thro away motor because of no sleeves .
Perry Smith Actually the NA engines were rated @. 200-210 Hp if I remember correctly. That was a highway rating. After Cat started manufacturing the turbo charged engines the Hp rating went to 300 Hp in motorhome type applications which used an air to air cooler core type application. On highway type trucks (produce delivery etc.) were rated at 225-250 Hp In the beginning. As far as a sleeveless type block you correct but Cat had oversize pistons where you would just send the block to the machine shop and have the block bored oversize. Then reassembled with OS pistons.
You can get a peak of the valve covers which are definitely not from a 3208
@@wizeguy2007 and ... they were remanufactured by Cat Renan in Corinth, MS. sidebar fact ...the 5.00 stroke was alast minute addition to the program (Ford 1160 by Caterpillar))
Good stuff. I just found your page, and ever since I moved to Modesto a few years ago, I've been curious about almond farms. I'll be tuning in.
Very cool!! I was out in SD last year and traveled up 5 to visit friends in Walnut Creek. I couldn’t believe all the farmland in the valley(s). Truly, America's fruit/vegetable garden!! Good job, boys!!
Also, years ago, two of my best summers (18th and 19th) were spent operating equipment at a local limestone quarry in NW Ohio. I ran an international TD25 dozer and a Cat (can’t remember model) with a 1 1/2 cy bucket. Also, a mix of other misc. equipment. Lordy, did I have fun... AND they paid me!!
Found this by accident, glad i did. Interesting and informative, thank you.
I just want to thank you and your family for the farming you do. Our farmers in this country are treated very badly and are very under paid and appreciated. Thanks again. Great video!
Thank you!
Same here in Sri lanka too.. Even Fisherman are richer than them. The Government buys their harvest for low prices and most of them are suffering with loan problems and poverty.
I'm in total awe: 6' deep ripper? Wow!
Have to get through that hard pan! It is concrete hard!
Not a 3208 which is 210-435HP but rather a 3508 which is spec'd out at 850 Flywheel HP (935 Gross HP) for a D11R. They should also be running a counterweight up front to keep the dozer level on its tracks, especially with that extra wing on the ripper. You can see how bad the machine is squatting to the rear. Speaking of weights that's a push block on the back of the ripper not a weight. The ripper will suck itself down when set at the correct angle.
Always amuses me when a company owns millions of dollars worth of Iron and knows basically nothing about the actual equipment. Just more proof business is run by the billing department not the technical department
I used to do this with a D9H.. slip ripping for Liebelt Inc, Central Valley about 15 years ago. Great video, really miss the job.
It seems like it would definitely be a fun job!
Looks like a good application for global positioning.
I’m from Oakdale my grandparents built their house here in 74’ soo cool to see what our local farmers are doin, I’m stoked to have found youre channel I’m subbn!! 🤘
Awesome! Thank you!
Bet you heard it many times, will say again, AWESOME!!!!
This all started with Collins and Barger land leveling. They leveled the Tulare lake bottom in the 60's and 70's. Cat was king.
Very interesting!
I've always enjoyed watching dozers work, but this presentation made me feel like I was in the driver's seat, as well.
Lots of useful information for further understanding these magnificent machines.
It was definitely a really cool feeling getting to sit in that driver's seat.
Man I love this clip!!! I have seen it several times still feels great to watch!!!!!
Great vid....Thanks for posting.
Crazy seeing a 11 in farming... awesome machine!!!
Costly though. Diesel is not cheap and the D-11 is a thirsty beast.
I used to run a d11, albeit a lot older than this one, at a quarry in Wyoming. Awesome machines.
Yeah that's usually where you see those machines most often!
D11s are awesome!!!
My boss has a side business doing the same thing in Washington state, we mark tree rows, rip and disk fields! Custom work!
Great clip, very informative! Worked with farming i Dixon back in the 80s. Ripping with D6 with three legs.
“Tip protector” hehehe that is how baby dozers get made.
Needle in the STACK ♿
Wear guard cheaper than buying whole new shank. That what it basic is. Fab? Welder? You might know & understand then. We do lots & very Lots of hard facing metal on these type of equipment. Everything big bucks get into these big boy's. We still going through lots turbo's on our D-11's, I Think we got it fixed now. Very lot dust around engine area in heavy rock. Hard working move lot material quick dozer.
You wouldn't believe it but the tip protector on my D10 fell of the other day.. only took 2 minute and and a hand from the fitter to get it back on
Gotta protect the shank
Good content guys!!
Keep it coming!!
love the striped down dozer WTF are amens great vid guys
Nice video and plenty of information.
Thanks!
Great video, the music stinks, would much rather hear the tractor working!!!
@@jimnunes6286 faCTS
I hope someone washed the inside of that cab.
I'd love to see how they go about planting the almond trees and fertilize and all that jazz
Maybe deep down? That way, the nuts are closer to ground level.
I keep watching this video. There is something primeval about it.
Great video, thanks for sharing. I just bought the Cat d11 to add to my extensive Lego collection and I am just about to start building it. I can’t wait to get it pushing stuff around.
Now if I've learnt anything from UA-cam there should have been. 🎸 Shake hands with danger 🎸 at the end
Andrew Ingram gold😂
the Riff is the signal to be cautious
haha I just watched that video!
Andrew Ingram Shake Hands with Danger brought me here
I wanna be the shake hands with danger stuntman!!
I remember seeing this dozer out there ripping a field off hwy 120 near Oakdale last summer
There is multiple of these not just one
@@jacibflores97209 no no, just one in the country ;)
They are thick on the ground. All it takes is money.
:)...Nice!...I lived in Vacaville when I was in the service...We had almond growers near us..They pronounce Almonds correctly...Ah-Mend ... The local joke was; you don't hear the "L" because you gotta " Knock the L out of em to get them out of the trees"...:) ... I try to tell my people in Philly how it's pronounced...They argue of course...Thanks for the upload and I've been in construction for 30 years, here in the east; that ground out west is RIDICULOUSLY hard...Never saw dirt that hard!
Awesome vid guys...came down the 5 the other week and saw a couple of these bad boys ripping and old nut farm paddock.....pretty impressive...I want a drive!!!....lok
That is an impressive machine.
Definitely amazing to watch it work.
There's no doubt that them Watermelon roots can be tough.
Nothing like Hp ,a Sweet Machine. Looking in from Ireland 🇮🇪
That’s awesome, liked all the details
Very interesting. We're not used to that kind of mega-machines here in Belgium.
Hope to see it work once . Thanks.
Another great video! Keep up the good work!!
Will do, thank you!
Awesome mate
That was pretty awesome. Those trees will be happy.
and here i am in northern ontario hauling the D11 80 miles with the blade and shank on the trailers
what's your gross with that load?
That fine soil can wear stuff out fast, but wow does it shine up the tracks!
If you own a D11 the tracks should never sit long enough to get dull or rusty. You would have to keep it booked with work 24/7 to make a profit.
Very interesting info. Thanks.
Deep ripping with my 1949 D2 wide track is 2 feet. Still fun running it.
Awesome cat
I agree completely
It sure creeks a lot.
I'd also figure out a way to retain the retracted blade cylinders to keep the dust off them. No reason to get them dirty if they don't have to.
ImpHalla they will be fine
Interesting video. Thanks Guys.
Oh yeah back in the shop.
Now that was cool to see!!! New sub
I just want to hear the sound of that beast going by 3 feet away, and imagine the way it feels under my feet... probably about a 3 on the Richter scale...
That is some kind of crazy!
Awesome video !
Hear the "clicking" in the background? that's the ripper dropping a millimeter at a time. Just some useless info for you
@Bruce Lethbridge - why is it doing that ?
@@thetigerstripes The hydraulics tend to creep when the engine is off and there is no pressure from the pump. That ripper is heavy.
Gravity always wins.
It's funny somebody mentioned that. I couldn't stop listening to it through the whole video thinking I was the only one that noticed it.
Useless info that 113 people so far have appreciated. Thank You!
You boys must have a nice bank manager 😂
Awesome!!!
Very awesome machines!!
Does this machine come with a Prop 65 warning?
I got a sprinkler line I need to instal in the yard this would do the job wouldn’t it 🤪😂👍🏼 Very nice rig guys
Wouldn't have much of a yard left!
Wouldn't have much of a yard left though!
Eh, I’d prolly go with the next bigger model
Great video!
Thank you! Hope to have more like it soon.
dam that thing is big! 😁😁😁😁
We have several D11R's at the mine I work at.
New Sub here from Oregon. I enjoy learning about the challenges you have growing different produce and their challenges respectively.I am retired with some down time on my hands and figured it was more interesting than porn lol,.
Haha!! Glad to have you!
@@CaliforniaFarmer With the water shortage and the bees dying off I wonder how the long term planning is affected for the ammonds and other orchards.
Noel Martin when tractors get more interesting than porn, you really are finished cowboy
Noel Martin the bees are not dying off mysteriously. Bees have to be managed correctly like any other animal and beekeepers that don’t manage their bees, lose their flock. The veroa mite can be treated for.
The water “shortage” in California is a result of decades of environmentalists getting their way over our farmers.
The stories we all hear on the news are part of an agenda.
Noel, What do you mean?... This IS porn.
9:52 - that actually IS a standard tractor GPS it's a Trimble EZ guid 250, it's literally one of the most common tractor GPS's out there, we had one for spreading, there are used in tractors all the time and there's nothing fancy about it, it's a bare bones, simplistic GPS, and the deviation thing he talked about is all stuff you can set easily in tractor GPS systems from ag leader, raven, and John Deere (as well as others)
Awesome
Man, i can't afford This type of plowing.
Maybe i'll just go pick some wild berries?
Amands.. LOL its ALLMONDS.. I love it :)
Its almond
@@chrisbeekley1887 Evidently you totally lost the the sense of humor part of the statement :)
Lol Well people pronounce things differently depending on which region of the country your from
puncher davis Kinda like the Almond Brothers....?😳
Big Toys! Great!
Ayyyeee 209 and Modesto was mentioned lol. Dozer is sick👌🏻
“To what’s called Modesto” I call it methdesto
Dude as my grandfather would have said that's drier than a popcorn fart there.
Steve Brenner think we had same grandpa
we are all related
hahaha my dad says that all the time
@@who_cares848 I stopped eating popcorn.
Probably pulverizing the already dry soil
These are the people in California who actually work. Don't see this in the cities at all.
FarFromEquilibrium
Cuz it would be weird using this in the city
@@keystonedaytrip238 Not that bright are you?
That Dozier is massive
Great video- what does the bar hanging from the ripper do in addition to the ripper shank?
I'd have loved to hear the machine more than the music. Especially to hear it start & see how to do so.
Question: Why do some dozers have the drive cog up high? It requires a longer track and drives the track at an angle instead of parallel to its travel as an end-drive would do.
Also: How is GPS used and how are the runs back and forth planned out?
having the final drive up high has certain advantages as to what the machine is specd to work for. theyre called a hi track and are good for torque, more leverage on the track, they'll usually come with the wide track package for more traction to go along with it which these people would definitely need and another benefit for them is because like he said the ground is so abrasive that it also helps to keep the final drive out of the sand more so the sprocket (the part with the teeth that integrate with the track) wear slower. its always cheaper to replace a idler (the smooth wheels in the track) than a sprocket when they wear out
@@stu741zyphia158: Thanks, that was very thorough.
The wheel is up high because then you can walk up the track to get to the cab. Thats obvious. The GPS is to help ensure you are still in the right paddock.
how much torque does that engine make? max towing capacity?
It'll pull 6 water skiers with ease. ;-)
do you find less sprocket wear with the high track compared to the sprocket in the ground, and does the chain wear more as it get bent more times compared to oval track or because it's not bending 180 its mitigates the wear?
It's really majestic. one of the best heavy machine videos i've seen.
Sweet video dude. Will you please make another video with a D11? Just set your drone to orbit and let it go for a full duration flight, then post the full video with no cuts. Id seriously watch this thing rip rows for 30 mins straight!
We are planning on it!
3208's an ole Ford Louisville motor! lol That's a 3508 850hp tractor there.
3208 wouldn't even move that much weight.
Hehehe, it's only half of a 3516 but it sounds like a locomotive motor when it idles. I love the 3508!
Brandon Taylor I was thinking same thing
@@tallone09 It'd budge it, but at a much lower speed :)
yea i was like wait what? no way
that was badass
Really interesting 👍
No man in there right mind would give this video a thumbs down
BE EPIC to hear that diesel ENGINE NOISE
We realized that we didn’t have any sound from it after we got the video up! We definitely learned from our mistake on that one!
California Farmer
Could you edit it
And add another minute or two on to hear that engine roar
At the end of video ?
Maybe they are Komatsu fans...
Haha a 3208 would make a good starter motor for the d11!
What kind of tillage follows the ripper to break up the "rock hard" hard pan?
Wow never seen that before! We don’t have anything like it here in Southern Manitoba Canada!
The fuel usage of the machine is insane!
Probably wouldn't be that bad since it's easy ripping
Not as insane as the water usage to produce a single nut or grape. That is what I always laugh about farmers in California.
@@regsparkes6507 Yes, insane. The farmers plant these items to keep water rights. 5 years later when it isn't cost effect they want from state to pay them plow it down. They plant these in drought. I know why they do it, but come on man you know it is gaming the system. If you don't agree with what I said do tell me what I said was wrong. Thanks.
Nicholas Heath it’s about 1.265. Ah fill
Its the radio that uses up the fuel..
Aamonds huh?
Malachi March I’ve heard it el-muns, ah-monds, and all-mons too!

ANOTHER vehicle I MUST have ..... ROFL! >8^)
How many watermelons/almonds do you need to grow to buy and run one of those?
Just paying for the fuel. The fuel line must be a garden hose. 😆
Not a lot, but they are fairly big.
It would have been good to get ground level video of it running and just audio of it working for a minute. Appreciate the video and great drone footage.
I have a 1952 D4 in mint condition, a old fella restored it before he past may he Rest In Peace
Don't where your shank down boys...
Remember wrap it up
Im having a hard time comprehending the return on investment with such expensive run time and fuel costs.... great video thank you for sharing
I has an agronomic, i say the same.
Expensive
what investment, have you ever baught a pound of nuts lately??
It’s something you only do once and a orchard can last a lifetime. I’m sure these people have thought about the cost and return on investment.
Have you seen the price of "ammonds" and pistachios lately! Pert near gotta fill out a credit form!
I've seen out near Fireball and Bill's Palace where they would Hook Up 3D Nines in the rear ones would have two big claws and they would pull the final one with the claws to break the hardpan and they would pull slabs out of the ground is biggest cars and then they were using to stack them up and make entryways to their ranches
nice job. beautiful machine. i working in holt cat repairing them
I wanna see a video of the service for this thing.
The intro could be the intro to interstellar 2
that's some power to drag that ripper though the dirt like that
Ran a D-10 back in the 80's. It was a monster machine.
The D-11 is half again the size. Nice crawler.
