Making A Wire Snare, Start to Finish

  • Here I demonstrate how I make wire snares, but not the full wire snare trap. There are a lot of ways you can make an effective wire snare trap to kill small game in a survival situation. You can make several of these easily and store them in a container in your survival kit.
    I don't like snaring animals. I much prefer killing them quickly with a gun or arrow, but in a SHTF or survival situation, the wire snare may keep you alive. I'm not showing you this technique so you can snare animals in your neighborhood or poach or kill anything for giggles. This is for survival.

      Yeah, about that..
      He wasn't clear enough. Its not just the length/# of twists, but also how tightly you keep twisting them. Either one will make it weaker, but not enough tension on the twists, or enough twists, can come undone from the game animal thrashing around.
      Luckily for the unexperienced, the middle ground is not a very narrow range.
      However you should always test each batch of wire to see how tight the twists can get before breaking. How many twists isnt as important, as it simply moves the location of the weak point. if the twists start to double up into a larger twist (like a twist stranded rope, wrapped around a hollow axis) you went way way too far.

    The beauty of traps and snares is you can hunt while you sleep.An experienced trapper will always have more food then even an expert hunter. Nice video but people need to practice snaring is not something you can just do after watching a couple of videos.Thanx alot for the video.

    You missed the most important bit about loading the snare so that it will cinch tight once triggered. This is what makes it effective, otherwise it's just a simple snare.

    Brilliant!! And as a kid I used to trap every day after school (in the mid-60's). I have a HUGE squirrel problem at my house. My wrist rocket worked VERY well...but I always worried...what if I miss (i.e. the marble could hurt someone).
    I NOW have a new method....already have 2 snares set up...can't wait. (Oh...I have 2 pet foxes that hang ou tin my yard....they LOVE squirrel!). So I dont even waste the meat!

    Nice one! I bought a few locking snares before I realized they were illegal in Colorado, so I decided to get a spool of wire so I can make a snare on the fly. You won't get in trouble for having a spool of wire in your pack if they find it LOL.

      That was my question. For those people that have never done this before it would have been nice to see you put your hand through to show us what exactly happens when it tightens and how the wire tightens. It's probably common sense and I think I can figure that out myself but it would've been nice to see you finish off your video with that demonstration.

      I bought this pack of wire from Lowe's. You can probably get it at most any hardware or home improvement store. Make sure to test any wire you use ahead of time so you know it will be strong enough for your target. I've seen others make snares from brass wire also.

    This snare will not work. You have to stop it from opening.

    • @flugschulerfluglehrer7139
      @flugschulerfluglehrer7139 3 роки тому

      Saftey Shadow Productions Well, a simple snare like that one will open up when the caught animal tries to escape. You need a mechanism that stops the snare from opening. There are many ways to achieve that. You can, for example make small holes in a coin and feed the line of the snare through these holes. If you do it the right way the line gets stuck in the holes and won’t open up.

      It either chokes the animal or it catches the front / back legs or body there are times you will
      Have to kill the animal if the snare doesn’t kill
      The animal first be prepared to do this before you ever set a snare.

    Your making your twists way to long, 6 good twists is more than plenty and doesn't stop your noose from closing up. Also pinch that wire tight in pliers at the X before you start twistin it, I can see the curls in yours and that is the start of work hardening.

    Real trappers use 1x9 or 7x7 cable with a lock and swivels. That tiny wire won’t hold anything worth eating. Maybe, maybe a squirrel if you’re lucky but he’d probably chew through that wire.

    • @SaileAway
      @SaileAway 2 роки тому +3

      In my experience, in the case of snowshoe hare at least, wire is often preferable. A properly loaded cable snare is actually too sensitive and closes up too small, meaning you get way more hares caught by one or both front legs rather than around the neck, and their extremely fine fur often jams most locking mechanisms. A wire snare as shown in the above video is cheaper, more lethal, and humane, IF you are going after snowshoe hares, and it supports itself in position without needing a stake and a wire as with a cable snare. Also, even the smallest diameter cable snare is too large for squirrels.

    I will tell you something sir I will put $5,000 cash up against $2,000 of your money we will trap for one week and I will put more calories on the table then you will have in the entire week I will catch in the first 3 days. Primitive trapping will do nothing but get somebody hurt or starve to death it actually helps nobody a rabbit can chew through that a squirrel definitely will if it comes true to the side of your garage not even to mention a raccoon or anything like that.

      So your gonna kill an animal because of a bird feeder ? Before you do you should make sure to
      Test the snare by tying it to a thick tree branch use a stool or chair to reach optimum height next putting the loop over your head and down around your neck when ready try and jump down to the ground.

    I NEVER ever leave a thumb down on a video, no matter how crappy it may be but for this one I made an exception without even watching it ! But instead of acting like the average hater on YT I feel obliged to explain why. In my opinion each and any video like this one should be deleted by YT. Snare is a blind killer and people using such apparatus do not deserve anything more than being despised. With this video you will inspire a lot of young morons who will try their newly acquired technique in their back yard, ending up killing the neighbor's kittens with ease and glorify themselves for such an accomplishment. If snaring is useful for you while you're struggling to survive in a harsh environment, that's your problem but please keep your technique for yourself ; there are plenty enough rifle hunters killing more than they need all around the world so don't add your own stupidity to the final count.

      Yet if you were in a survival situation you would be starving and wishing you had watched this video several times.
      I live out in the woods so nobody's precious chihuahua is ending up in my yard without one of the many coyotes getting to it first.
      I have never snared a cat or dog, but ran across many coyote killings.
      I also do not leave mine unwatched.
      Cameras on and alarm bells when something is near. Also have something to scare anything away on the very very low chance it is someone's little fido or miss priss.
      But enough about that.
      Good luck with your issues and I hope you see the right therapist regularly.
