Incredible Forgotten Southern School House in Georgia built in 1890

- This historic old rural schoolhouse was built in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s and served as the main school for the town. A much more rudimental basic one story school house stood in its place for many years prior until it was torn down and the wood reused for this larger schoolhouse shown in the video. This building was in use until the early 1960’s when a much more modern school for the area was built and this one left vacant. For a couple decades it served as a town meeting hall until being forgotten totally in the 1980’s-1990’s. Now it’s mostly just used for storage and a place for stray cats to take shelter from the rain. Can see one run inside the school at the very start. Loved this beautiful unique old place, the upstairs of the school house and its unique two staircase design was incredible. So glad could document this old place. Thanks for watching. I used to own a large brick school building built in 1919 that was a college prep high school for boys... Many school buildings of the period had auditoriums upstairs... The stairs are outside in case of fire... The little rooms next to them are cloak rooms for coats and rain gear to be removed before going in... My building was many times bigger at 18,000 square feet... I lived in it for 9 years... Search Morgan School for Boys Petersburg, Tennessee...
I looked it up. Pretty cool. My good friends parents live in an old school aswell. It was basically abandoned when they took it over. Built 4 big apartments into it. The one still has the big old slate black board

I just looked up the school! It's beautiful! That would be so amazing to live in a place like that! There was a show on TV about a couple who renovated an old school in Utah, I think. That was simply mind-blowing how well it turned out! I'll bet yours would be even more lovely!

Went to school 1956-1959, grade 1 thru 3, in a school very similar to this.
It was the same building my father went to high school circa 1940 and played basketball upstairs.
Coal stove, cloak room with no electric, 3 grades and 1 teacher in each classroom.
No telling how old that building was before it burned in about 1966.
Best homemade food ever!

So sad to see many.. many wonderful old buildings rotting away... This one is at a point that it could be easily restored but in only a few years it will be too far gone... America wake up and preserve our culture...
@WildwoodCastle. Hello. People watching these old house/building explores, all feel the way you do. We all want these beautiful homes, etc. restored. The reality is that each structure you send could potentially cost hundreds of thousands to restore. It is simply not feasible. Thousands upon thousands of people have purchased derelict historical homes and done amazing jobs at restoring them. Many will say it took them years. There are millions of beautiful historical homes open to the public. I can tell you that across Canada, it is not common the way it is in the States to come across abandoned historical homes. It’s very rare actually. We are a younger country, but still have beautiful buildings from the 17th-18th century, particularly in Montreal, Quebec and old, walled Quebec City. I have the good fortune of owning a circa. 1850 stone house with original beams and huge fireplace. Real estate prices in Ontario and other provinces are out to lunch!!! Many young middle class people may never own a house in their lifetime. I can’t believe how cheap some of the houses l see advertised for sale in the States are. The thing is, you have to have a job near that house to support a move. As an example here in Ontario, a very basic older home that would need work is going to cost you, 350,OOO! That’s about the cheapest. Newer homes are 500,000 at the minimum. You won’t find a home in Toronto for under one million!!! It would be wonderful if we could save and restore every historical home. Some of these homes are torn down to make way for subdivisions. What a pity.
I was thinking the same thing. Could be renovated into a pretty neat home. No raining getting in -- yet.
There is a reason the government is letting small towns the places like this rot and encouraging everyone to move to the big cities. They want the past way of life lived in this country erased from memories. Everyone who cares needs to wake up soon, and by soon I mean right now.
the McCammon piano co was in business in NY 1832 until they sold in 1910. they started making upright piano's like the one in this video, in 1890. so cool, thanks for this video.

Kappy, you're my fav old house explorer and I really respect how you let the buildings speak for themselves. So many other yt channels want to say every house is haunted or a family died there or something inflammatory in the title and that is so annoying. I also love how you don't stage things. I went to a school similar to this one growing up in Millsfield, TN. It had grades 1 thru 8 and 2 classrooms. 1 teacher taught 1st thru the 4th and the other taught 5th thru 8th. Heat was provided by pot bellied coal burning stove. It had running water but no indoor bathrooms. Upstairs was a gymnasium but it was closed off and no longer in use when I went there. My dad also attended this school, he was born in 1918. I went there from 1960 until 1963 when it was closed after they built a new modern school down the road. I know it sounds rather primitive but I have fond memories of going to school there.
60 years abandoned and everything still in such good condition...WOW!
I'm a tad jealous, Kappy! When I go exploring, the buildings I find are mostly empty.
I hope someone saves this beautiful building! I'm sure someone can tell some cool stories of how their great grandparents went to school there!
What a cool old place…and not too far gone. I wish someone would bring it back to life. It would make a great flea market or antique mall…or meeting place for community events. So much character in those rooms…Thank you Kappy! 😊

The old wood stove upstairs is like one my grandparents had to heat by. Brought back a lot of old memories. Also, I have two chair like the ones in there that came from my grandparents.

That place has stood the test of time.
It sure has.
Lots of times these old schools turned into living spaces. Occasionally ya see one remodeled into a private residence. Where I live, the county had 110 school districts, all one or two room schoolhouses, catering to each country area/neighborhood. Most were closed by the early 1960’s & consolidated. . Most of those old schools were heated with wood, and the coal.
My older friend attended one called The Prairie Queen , cool name for a school , it too closed in the early 1960’s. Some had Boys entrance and Girls entrances.

I lived in a town that turned an old highschool into apartments. Kept the outside the same, was nice to drive past it.
I went to school in GA and Alabama in the mid and late 1960's. I went to one small school that had a divider like this one had upstairs. Go back to the 6:15 mark and pay attention to the horizontal pole/rail in the center of the room at the ceiling. This could be closed off and have two rooms for classes if needed. Twin staircases also helps in case of fire upstairs

8:31 William McCammon was a smaller scale manufacturer in Albany, NY. The firm built very well-made, high quality instruments from 1832 - 1910. The duel stairways were one for boys and one for girls. Great video. 😎👍

One of my biggest dreams is taking a historic and abandoned home or school and fully restoring it to it's original glory. Although it's sad to see it abandoned, there is still great beauty and mystery in it.
It is amazing that the old school building is still in such good condition considering that it has been abandoned for around 60 years and the door is wide open and half the windows are missing. It must have been built well back then and the roof appears to still be keeping most of the rain out. It would be nice if somebody refurbished it to show how schools used to look and use the building as a meeting place or school museum.

I watching a reel on FB last night of a quick tour of the most beautiful 1920’s mansion that was absolutely perfect. Beautiful floors, built in’s, fireplaces were pristine like a little slice of heaven. Waiting outside was the demo crew waiting to start knocking it down to make way for condos😢. Nothing was salvaged everything was wasted. Broke my heart.
That being said this school house is so cute. Until it dies from neglect. I get emotional sometimes that as a country, there is very little interest in saving history. 😢
I can’t tell you how many of these places I’ve gone back to do an update video and there is no trace left anymore, usually a subdivision of houses or just an empty looking spot! It’s heartbreaking! Atleast these places can live on in a way by being photographed and recorded! Thanks for watching!
Maybe they had the front staircases incase of a fire and the children could exit faster. I love this building it's pretty intact inside. They probably had some awesome plays in there back in the day....too bad life wasn't as simple as it was back then. Thanks Kappy, love the sound of the rain.☔☔

I believe it was used as a flea market. The building looks like very solid. Rain seems to be coming in though the windows. I can easily see renovating the school house into 3 bedroom and 2 bathroom house.

That is an old school house ,big rooms, could have been maybe used for church ,that platform upstairs or maybe school used for auditorium,neat to be able to see this ,thank you,it looked so big from outside I was surprised it didn't have more smaller rooms
Nice find. And doesn’t seem to have been repurposed. Except for some old furniture and the ubiquitous mattress. My elem had huge windows. And no a/c. That rain would surely put us all to sleep. Really nice example of it’s time. Thanks for sharing!

I remember my Mom and Dad always said " We used to have to walk miles in the snow an rain to get to school lol an now I can see how far kids would have done that with this beauty out in that field. Very cool!! It would be great to convert it into a private home or a duplex since it has 2 front stairways. An old school in the town I live in has an auditorium designed like that.
I just want to get in there and clean it and sort thru all the mess and make it nice and organized. That would be an awesome place to make into a home. Love it ❤

I think the outside stairs would give community people access-egress to the auditorium without having to traipse thru the school rooms. They may have held community meetings there in addition to student performances and graduation ceremonies.

In those old schools they sometimes had 6 grades in one building with 2 teachers. In one section grades 1,2,3 , one teacher and in another section grades 4,5,6 one teacher, In most instances there was no cafeteria, students brought lunches in brown paper bag. If there was a stage, it was used by all for skits, etc.
I went to a 3 classroom school in 1st grade in 1968 or 69 in lakefork, il. 1st and 2nd grade garden level along with cafeteria and other 2 classes upstairs. It's used as a community center now. Town is only a few hundred people with a giant elevator. Love your show!!!
My grammar school was a big ol brick & sandstone building with 6 class rooms, K thru 6th grades.
Huge single payne windows, heated with coal.
Ya had to wear your coats if your classroom was on the North side. Each classroom had a coat hall with wrought iron hooks.
There was a huge bell in the attic! It was so cool. Sadly it was razed in 1972 for an apartment building. Grrrr.

If a revisit could be on your list,It’s such a neat find👍 You go to so many cool abandons,it would be one of my favorite dreams as I started investigating empty places when I was 5 years old, and my spooky Grandmother started my brother’s and I checking out an a grade school/high school that my brothers and I attended a year before. And then there was a show put on in the cafeteria/ gymnasium with a balcony above. I’d give more details but it was a turning point in my time. And now would love to see if you have more old abandon schools to search out that are left, before they get gone. Love what you do ❣️💫👍💖⭐️😄

9:01 go up one side of the steps and go down to other side of steps. Those steps are narrow which explains that up/down configuration.

Cool school. My great uncle used to make chairs like the ones pictured but his were hide-bottom instead of wooden slats. Imagine the labor involved!
Awesome find! As a self-professed theater nerd, I would say the upstairs was a theater or other performance-type space. It is raised off the main floor, has a standard stage proscenium arch, has stage entrance steps (the short ones near the piano), and I imagine that full-width rod was a curtain rod for the grand curtain running the width of the stage. I dunno. Just a theater nerd’s guess! 😄

Found this about that piano company: Apparently there were both "McCammon" and "Wm. McCammon" pianos. The first was established 1832 in Albany, NY, and then moved to Oneonta. The company was sold to the William Tonk company in 1903.

Hello Kappy! This one is so interesting! Where I was raised, old schoolhouses from the Depression era are used as community centers for widespread country villages, for lack of a better word.
My great grandfather and, after his death, my great grandmother, then both their daughters, (one of whom was my grandmother) taught at one of these beautiful old schools that dates from the turn of the 20th century, Sunshine Hill School, located on the outskirts of Barrineau Park, in Escambia County, Florida.
A newspaper from 1956! I was born in 1957! That old paper would be so much fun to read!
I'll bet the chalkboards were repurposed in other schools. They most likely would have been of slate, which is very difficult to mine and expensive, to boot! I do wonder if all twelve grades were in this one school building. That would account for the massive size of the classrooms. There may have been partitions between the grades or, as in some old schools, more advanced grades would help the younger children with their lessons.
It almost seems as if people were living in these rooms once. Perhaps the school board sought to make some money on the empty buildings. Hmm. 🤔
This room, if built today, would require either pillars or steel or laminated beams to allow for such an open expanse. This construction is amazing! I'll bet it was cold in these rooms, with all those uninsulated double hung windows!
You're right, Kappy, this is one really cool place! I would love to know some more of its history or see some old photographs from days gone by!
I'll bet the children's voices rang sweetly through these rooms once, long ago. I can easily imagine the sound in the morning when everyone sang to greet the new school day! What a wonderful place to learn the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic!

I'm glad you weren't freezing, like you have been before. We here in East Tennessee just had eight and a half inches of snow falling in one day (I had a foot at my little house). Then, to add insult to injury, the temperatures crashed to zero! The snow froze and the city of Knoxville shut down! Worse, seven people, most of the homeless, froze to death!
I just found an abandoned house club in Knoxville and I'm going to tag along on an explore, myself (I hope!). What fun!
Much love to you and yours from solitary little me. I'm adjusting to living all alone for the first time in years. It's not all that bad, I think! I miss my dear husband, but I am sure that he is gone from me forever. I'll see him again when my time here is through.

GeOrga wow thats down there a ways wow..thats close to south Carolina where my mothers friends are from they say its nice there...and nice old school still has the old school windows geee..that old vintage couch by the window is worth couple bucks..
At 2:58-3:02, there were two orbs... Then again a minute later. Then at approx 4:00, there was a bright orb that stopped in mid air and went the opposite direction.

I bet that big room upstairs was where the kids ate lunch, being right off from the kitchen. And if they put on a play or anything the tables were moved out of the way and they watched the show up on the stage. So it served as both cafeteria and auditorium. (Don't laugh, I attended elementary school in something done that way.)
Still in good shape. The rain isn't coming in the widows even when they are broken. It could be several suites if divided up.
