The Little Mermaid (NES) Playthrough

- A playthrough of Capcom's 1991 license-based action game for the NES, Disney's The Little Mermaid.
There are few things in life that are absolute, but there are certain universally accepted truths that shape our outlooks: the sun will rise whether we're here to see it or not. Being poor and hungry sucks. Incompetent people lack the competencies to recognize that they're incompetent. And old-school Capcom games based on Disney-licenses are the bees' knees.
The Little Mermaid doesn’t get quite the same amount of love heaped on it as DuckTales ( • DuckTales (NES) Playth... ) and Chip 'n Dale ( • Chip 'n Dale: Rescue R... ) do, but make no mistake. This is a quality NES game.
The game roughly follows the plot of the movie. Playing as Ariel, your goal is to defeat the fabulous but wicked Ursula (RIP Divine), rescue your fish pals, and marry the hunky Prince Eric.
Since like Lieutenant Dan, Ariel ain't got no legs, The Little Mermaid isn't a run-of-the-mill platformer. A few awkward moments flapping about on a bit of rock aside, this entire venture takes place under the sea.
There are five stages separating Ariel from her fated showdown with the evil sea queen, but thankfully she's no guppy. She can flick her tail at her enemies to enbubble them a la Bubble Bobble ( • Bubble Bobble (NES) Pl... ), and throw them to defeat other enemies. Her bubble attack's range and power can be upgraded by collecting orbs that can usually be found in treasure chests that can be broken open.
The game is pretty straightforward and as easy as you'd expect from an NES Disney game, but the controls are tight, the music is excellent, and the graphics are surprisingly good considering that the NES's palette only had about nine shades of blue to work with. There are tons of secret items to find, and even though you'll probably whip the game in your first or second attempt, it's fun enough to keep you coming back again and again.
But why can't we stab Ursula with the boat like we could Jaws in his game?
I'm not ashamed to admit that as a second-grade boy, I loved it, girl game or not. I mean, the movie was awesome, and the game was a welcome break from the endless parade of deaths that were par for the course with stuff like Ninja Gaiden or Battletoads.
The Little Mermaid was a solid win for anyone who was lucky enough to take a chance on it. It's a polished, well-made game that does its source material justice, and it's a game that I still regularly come back to.

This game is way better than it had any right to be.
Part of that golden era of licensed games in the 90's with stuff like Alladin, The Lion King, Goldeneye, Ducktales & Turtles in Time.
Goldeneye isn't Disney.
@@LITTLE1994 he said "licensed games," not Disney games. Also, Ninja Turtles weren't Disney either. (Nor Nickelodeon back then. Shame TMNT is no longer an "indie" series.)
Better how? Please defend that statement. I'll agree those others are good, but this one? It starts out going off script (How'd she explain everything without her voice? And how'd she turn back into a mermaid without consequence?) and throws you into a game that ain't for little girls. Reading the manual helped a little, but there are hidden upgrades in places that don't make sense or puzzles that are not intuitive. It's the worst of Duck Tails without even being true to the story.
@@3dpprofessor why do they have to "defend" their statement? Go play some video games, yeesh
@@3dpprofessor Which UA-camr did you learn this opinion from, kid?
Thank you for sharing all this amazing content with us. I used to play this game a lot as a kid.
This right here is the best game to rock The Little Mermaid license, but it's Capcom so it's not like that's a big surprise.
Love your videos
thank goodness it wasn't konami
@@dominickjustave3558 Thanks!
In the nes era capcom was just dropping hits after hits. Even disney got some bangers from them
For sure
A game without pitfalls or one hit death, for a change...
"Ursula is back. What should we do?"
Ariel - beat the shit out of her. What else?
I remember when I was little this game felt like it took forever to get through, but I was only about 7 when it first came out and the original NES was still a happening thing that I loved playing.
An FB reel came across my newsfeed. It was about the old video games people used to play and I suddenly remembered the game console, my mom bought for my sister and me when we were kids. I can recall the colors of the keyboards, wired controllers, and the wired gun (for the duck hunt) but I forgot what model it was. I ended up here trying to find that. This is so nostalgic 😩💕
Its fascinating how I can recall every single detail of this game. The music, the texts, even Sebastian's mouth moving in 0:35.
I have this game, and the Game Boy version, and while short, they're both solid games.
For me, this game has probably the best graphics for all of the NES games at the time.
I forgot how amazing the music of this game was, world 5 was always my favourite; Capcom never disappoints on that matter. Also, you forgot the 1-Up on the first level, but what a great playthrough nevertheless, thanks for the memories.
My childhood game!!! THANK YOU so much for reminding me about this game, i appreciate it! I want to play again.
this game is already 30 years old
*31
Fun fact: Stephen L. Butler also produced the Illusion series, and except for Mickey Mousecapade and Aladdin on SNES, the Capcom Disney titles were produced by Ghost N' Goblins creator Tokuro Fujiwara.
this just unlocked a childhood memory
i used to play this game emulated on my dads laptop when i was 3-4, still a core memory
This takes me back.
Ahh, this game... I remember finishing it on a VCD player as one of 300-in-1 games.
Ateri yada vcd bir yerden vurmuş hepimizi toprağım 😅
Graphics are gorgeous
This looks great. Too bad I never tried it back then. The boss music is very “Darkwing Duck”.
well because both games were relesaed by Capcom
@@inukaiser Ya I have Darkwing Duck, that’s why I mentioned it. Great game.
@@inukaiser They were also both composed by Yasuaki Fujita.
Loved this game so much.. i always played this as a kid.. i hope they release a new version of this game..
Now you can all play as the cleptomaniac mermaid we all love and cherish for some reason.
It's kind of wild how iconic soundfonts were back then. Just a few chirps in and I'm asking myself, "Is this a Capcom game?" -goes to read~ Oh, yeah, this is a Capcom game.
Pretty good for NES, to be honest. But Capcom makes great Disney games.
The only two _The Little Mermaid_ games I got to play back when were the Tiger Electonics game (ha, remember those?!) and the Sega Genesis version. This one looks pretty rad!
Forgot about this game thanks so much for playing it love your channel 😊
Tyvm!
You unlocked a memory I forgot I had
my childhood memory with my family.
Short and easy, but still a fun game to spend a half-hour on.
Never encountered this as a child, possibly very rare in my country (or perhaps difficult to pirate?) Surprisingly superb graphics imo better than official lion king game
I never knew that this game was also on both the Sega Genesis and Game Gear until recently.
It really surprises me just how many games based on Disney properties managed to fare well back then. This, Goof Troop, Darkwing Duck - the works. I'm really loving the graphics and soundtrack. Just listen to the boss music. (11:41)
Yeah, those ones weren't bad, but this is definitely the best one. The NES's versions of Darkwing Duck and TaleSpin were also way better than the ones on the Genesis and the TurboGrafx-16.
Even though they are based on the same IP, they are not the same game. The Sega games were based more on the movie whereas the NES version was based more on the cartoon show just like DuckTales, Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers, Talespin, and Darkwing Duck. Sadly The Little Mermaid is the only NES Capcom Disney game not included in the Disney's Afternoon Collection for PC and Xbox.
Pretty decent adaptation of the movie that launched the Disney Renaissance.
i actuley prefer this ver over the sega genesis n snes
When my sister and i are little girls our neighboor aunt had a emulator which can play games videos and music etc and she bought a game cd for us and in cd there is a many game to choose, this was ours favorite i couldnt play well but my little sister beat all enemies that times were really great times i wish i could play again
Just wonderful 🧜♀️
First game I ever beat lol ...
I saw another video on this but it's not included on my game box for some reason so I'm watching it here.
Great gameplay
I actually loved this game when it came out. Had alot of fun secrets to power up your attack, plus a good story.
A seemingly "girls" game which I thouroghly enjoyed playing thru
Omg i had this game 😅❤
I remember renting this game and yes it was easy and fun and you know what this game should really get a dlc release with Disney Classic Game collection heck include Toy Story and Pocohantas as well.
0:02 is so cool to see!
- Excellent game, I played it around 1992 (I was 12 years old) along with other classics from that time and I just downloaded an application on my cell phone where many games come together, this one from The Little Mermaid...

Vielleicht kommt die Meerjungfrau Arielle demnächst zu den Nintendo Switch Online. Mal sehen?🤔
This game's story deviates heavily from that of the movie.

Very cool 😎 this is fantastic
Minor nitpick Ariel traded her voice for legs and so therefore shouldn’t be able to explain anything to Prince Eric.
I guess that makes Ariel the original Komi-san lol. She couldn't really talk... Much like Komi Shouko.
She should've just made like Ace Ventura and talked with her butt.
Another buried memory
Im am 20 years old!im play it whas six years!

U've managed to miss a continue in the first level itself .. there's no need to view d rest of the video as u r in such a hurry and u r sure to miss a lot of secrets in the following levels..
Well, I have to say that this game was a pretty bad adaptation of the movie in terms of story line.
Ariel never becomes a human, and the final battle is nothing like the movie either.
the final battle of the remake is very similar to this, I just realized, Ariel kills Ursula instead of Eric in the live action just like in here.
@@marikkelaszlo3355 Yeah, but the movie remake is still basically the same as the 1989 film, with the only difference being that the roles of Ariel and Eric were reversed.
But in the case of the game is just feels that it's like a completely different story. It's way too different from the original.
Тормозишь.
What the hell is that
Such a lame game, no challenges, even a kid of 2 years old will finish in one try
