Battletoads is my all-time favorite game. I usually beat it a few times a year. I have been playing it since I was 8 years old. I'm 42 now. It clearly survives the test of time.
In Double Dragon 2, you can get more lives by starting a 2 player game, then beating up the 2nd player, resulting in taking all their lives.
thats what i always did
Oh, haha!
I never knew that
@@thatdude1810 give it a try. 6 lives makes the game much more beatable and you can get more practice on the platforming sections
A lot of old Super Mario Brothers Games are like that when you think about it. You can just play 2 players and switch between Mario and Luigi every time you die and therefore have twice as much lives.
Started out with Base Wars! Let’s gooo! Amazing soundtrack as well!
Definitely my favorite baseball game on NES!
I remember Willow being the "Poor Man's Zelda", because Zelda's price never went down even years after it was released, but Willow was always on sale. And "Super Dodgeball!" was amazing! It was a bargain bin purchase right along with "River City Ransom" and I never regretted it.
I liked Willow better than Zelda!
Willow was a pleasant surprise. I wasn't expecting it to be that good the first time I played it.
I love the enthusiasm on display here. You and Squared Pegs are just so excited about old games! I dig it.
Hah, I'm pretty monotone usually.
@@GregsGameRoom It's internal enthusiasm. You're not jumping up and down on the couch, but I can still feel it. It's very... genuine, unlike a lot of UA-camrs who rely on a gimmick persona.
IMO the most underrated game is "Ring King". While "punchout" is far considered the prime boxing game on NES what I love is how "Ring King" allows you to make your boxer stronger, faster and take more hits by leveling up in "practice". The game also often gives you boxers close to your stats to make it more balanced so you don't destroy everyone. And the password feature lets you save all that hard work. Then you can fight a 2nd player, go for a cup in tournament or go for the #1 spot in rookie, USA and world spots. You don't have the crazy boxers like from "punchout" but I love that game. Played for hours as a kid.
Hey Greg,
If you’re playing Mike Tyson’s Punch Out! on an old school tv, I’m sure you can beat him. The secret I never hear people talk about, but it worked for me, was: when you dash to the side to avoid a punch, don’t let Mac centre himself, rather, if you dodge left, quickly tap right to quickly centre yourself, now you’ll have just enough time to actually counter attack. Try it a few times and you’ll finally take out this old school classic.
Love the content!
Oh man, the memories! Super Mario Bros, Gradius III, Gauntlet, Tetris, Excitebike, and Legend of Zelda, and double dribble...... Those were my staples! There were so many good games!
Thank you for bringing back to my youth with Magic Darts!! I had completely forgotten about this game, but seeing the chimp and the alien brought it all back!!
This is one HELL of a list! Some of these games I have never heard of, and I grew up in the NES era. You have me wanting to go back and play. Thanks!
Great list. Hidden gems. Did not know about the existence of some of these games you have chosen. Thanks for all you do !
Appreciate you watching the video!
Great video my dude. Brings back so many childhood memories. Thanks for the trip in nostalgia lane
Super Mario Bros. This was my first heavy obsession. I've had some people telling me were going to Nintendo land just to get me to go on hikes. At that time, 1989, I didn't like hiking.
Some of my favorites Rad Racer, Battle City, Super Mario 3
Cool video, I like these kinds of videos, brings back memories of some games I used to play or gives me ideas for some games I didn't play and should try to track down. Subscribed!
Thanks!
I didn't play Ninja Gaiden growing up, but I had to try it after seeing AVGN do a video about it. One of my favorite Nintendo hard game series.
Great video! Great games! Thanks!
Great video dude 😊
Thanks!
I 100% agree with this list! Fantastic job, man.
Thank you!
Loved this! Played a LOT of Battletoads; I feel like that was my go to guilty pleasure game.
It needed more battling but otherwise awesome.
Great video man!! Love pro wrestling!!
It’s hilarious!
Super Dodge Ball on the NES is an all-time banger that doesn't get enough love. I just spent a small fortune on the Neo Geo version and am just going to assume it must be that much better.
The NES version is by far the best (IMO of course.) I've played other versions and they just don't feel "right."
As a kid it was one of those games I'd go back to over and over when I had half an hour to spare. It was also one of the first GBA games I bought with the system when I was finally able to get my hands on it.
I loved Super Dodge Ball!! It was on par with the Atari 2600 game "Warlords" for it's repeat playability and the never-ending strategy needed to beat all the other local kids.
Super Dodge Ball on the NES never gets old. Supreme title.
Ikari Warriors and YES! You got super dodgeball!
Great vid! Subbed
Great list of games. Great review of them.
This is a great video! I agree with nearly all of these choices!
“The final countdown” is in so many things to do with pop culture. It’s weird… I don’t think the song on its own ever hit major mainstream success, yet it’s been used in so many shows, movies and commercials that it’s a legendary song.
Pinball Quest was one that I constantly came back to. The Quest was so unique and the tables were fun when you weren't in the mood for the main game. Stealing from the store was always entertaining.
very good list, there are a few on there I need to give another go! I don't think I've ever even played Willow.
Base Ears & Cyber all are 2 "future robot sports" games I adore!
Great list! Gun Nac is underrated!
Yeah, it's awesome!
Commando, Ikari Warriors & Guerrilla Warfare are all very similar (especially in the arcade) but due to Guerrilla Warfare's graphics & speed I feel it's clearly the best of the 3.
You're probably right.
Okay? I was absolutely loving your video... then you mentioned Tetris and how it's your most favourite game of all time. Its mine too. I've never met anyone else who considers it they're most favourite game too ❤❤❤
Those cheesey tunes bring back a lot of great memories. Agree about Tetris, one theme song I love. Super spike V-ball was addictive too but that may have been SNES. Great 4 player action
Super Spike was also NES.
With the Super multi tap, another $40 IIRC. Worth it though @@GregsGameRoom
Man, all of these look and sound crisp AF! Am definitely going to need to try willow, guerrilla war and others at some point. Never had these back then.
Really great list. Zanac could go right along with GunNac, for obvious reasons. No argument on PinBot here either.
This was great to watch and you mentioned some of my favorites which don't always get the credit they deserve... (Elevator Action, Gyruss, Pinbot). If you liked Pinbot, you should also check out High Speed which is another excellent NES simulation of a classic pinball machine. Its from the same era and I think the same design team put together the NES version. Definitely check it out if you haven't tried it before!
With Pro Wrestling it's like Jesse The Body Venture used to say when he did Wrestling Commentary back in the day: "If the ref don't see it, it didn't happen!"
You basically listed my entire collection. That was fun.
The pinball game with Mario in it was the one I had. I loved it
Two of my crowning achievements were beating Battletoads without continues, which I have done twice, and beating Castlevania deathless, which I did once on the NES and Vs. versions. I own 26 of the games on this list and can get behind them all. I would also like to mention that Dragon Spirit on the NES is superb as well. One of my favorite shmups on the console by far.
The first Zelda I play all the time. Jaws is another one.
Duuuuuude! You included Willow! I thought I was the only fan of this one!
As Mark Bussler of Classic Game Room would say, "It's very Lando!"
Great video. The lack of capcom games proves my point when I say Capcom wasn't really All That Great on the NES at all!
I find myself replaying Castlevania 3 on the regular. It's like the first one, but bigger and more variety of gameplay with multiple characters. I like the game so much I bought the Japanese version along with a famicom so I could get the enhanced music, which is incredible.
Battletoads. Enjoyable game. Most frustrating thing - Not having a chance to play Level 3, Turbo tunnel.
Base Wars is my all time favorite NES game, but there is one I love more if I have a second player… Archon: The Light and the Dark!! It is absolutely BRUTAL against the computer, to the point of unfairness, but SO fun against a person!
Base Wars is so amazing, even without the robot fighting! (Which is hilarious.)
Pro Wrestling was fun, but it was an infinite loop. You never actually beat it, it just keeps going and going like the energizer battery
Okay. Best pinball of that era..... Revenge of the Gator for Game Boy.
Great video with some awesome games! But why spoil the ending cutscenes on so many of the games..?
I like to show the best parts.
@@GregsGameRoom Sure, but you ever think about the many people who watch the video to get tips on great games, and the ending for an awesome game they never played gets spoiled without any warning..?
These are all great games, but I had no time to play them. I was way too busy playing Gyromite and Stack Up.
Ha, you and the AVGN! :D
GYRUSS in the Arcade was better than Galaga in my opinion but when we got it on NES I didn't know how to feel but then I couldn't decide which I liked more lol Awesome lineup!!
Kickle Cubicle is one of the most addictive games on it, and im surprised it wasnt in this list.
"Addicting" isn't a word. Addictive
Is pedantic a word?
I thought I was the only person that liked Willow on the NES.
If you truly love each & every one of these games you'll most certainly love *Toejam and Earl Back in the groove* . It woulda be great even in 8 bit!
For me, it was Bump 'n' Jump, Spy Hunter, Ninja Gaiden, and Batman.
Pinbot is a great choice.
I've gone back to play the Mega Man series on the NES more than any other games.
I always enjoyed Bases Loaded II and Tecmo Super Bowl.
How did you get such a broken version of Mario Brothers. I've never seen a broken ROM of that
Definitely a great array of addicting games. Contra stood out the most. I did use the code. Don’t tell anyone.
Imma tell everyone.
We don't have to tell anyone that you used the code. We all used the code, at least until we got good.
Rollerball is my favorite NES pinball game
We NEED a Zapper and Duck Hunt for Nintendo Switch!!! Hogan's Alley, too!! :D They need the games to have 2 modes, classic and HD remake!!!!
I haven't played a lot of these games, but I still feel like agree with almost every game on here. No Willow though lol
Dr Mario! Man... that was good. Especially with 2 players. Good list nevertheless.
I always prefer Double Dragon 2. But I also never played the Sega port of the first game.
Wrecking Crew was an awesome game as well. Burai Fighter wasn't bad either
How could you forget Micro Machines, RC Pro-Am, and Startropics?
I feel like I'm the only one who enjoyed the KOEI games, lol. Especially Romance of the Three Kingdsom 2 and Gemfire.
Well, there were a lot of them, so someone liked them!
@@GregsGameRoom Lol. Me and my friends! 🙂
Very few people played those games. They were almost too advanced for the NES hardware and required actual strategy and knowledge of history to win. But I loved them!
@@telengardforever7783 For sure!
Uh....excuse me, Baseball Stars is the "gold standard" of NES Baseball games.
Thank you for darts forgot about that game I use play it love play as alien or ninja no nes championship bowling game ?
It would have been great if Hudson Soft had ported some of these games to the TurboGrafx16. The system probably wouldn't have fail like it did.
Which ones are you thinking?
@@GregsGameRoom All the games that never came to the TurboGrafx16. Imagine playing these games with 16-bit graphics on the TurboGrafx16 super system.
I'd have to put River City Ransom on my list
The original Double Dragon doesn't have 2 player co-opt play which defeats the purpose of "double" dragon. The Sega Mastef System had co-opt and thankfully DD Part 2 on the NES includex it.
It's still fun though.
@@GregsGameRoom i agree. However my one NES friend down the street was amazed that the SMS version had 2 player co-opt mode of Double Dragon and the NES didn't. Being an American most of my kid neighbors had an NES and was I one of 2 oddballs who had the SMS on my baseball team. I'm forever greatful I got experience both consoles. Double Dragon 2 on the NES definitely made up for the lack of co-opt play on the original. DD Part 2 is a top 10 NES game for me👍
I absolutely hate all battle toad games and I love beat em ups it's basically my favorite retro genre also hate all Castlevania games that base wars looks cool
Nice Video ! Sub & Big Like ! And Love Retro Nes Games !
My crowning glory was beating contra on one life. It’s harder than it seems. The enemy RNG in the later levels gets stupid. It took me about a month
I did that with Super C.
Great list! Obviously thirty games limits you. I agree w/nearly every game on your list. Admittedly a few I've never played. I would add:
SMB3
Trojan
The Lone Ranger
Ducktales
Mega Man 2
Dr. Mario
Golf
Excitebike
Castle Quest
FFII
Adventure Island
Skate or Die (Ski)
Hogan's Alley
RC Pro AM
Tiger Heli
Jackal
1942
Dragon Warrior II
Sweet Home (I played it emulated a few years ago)
Mother (on Switch)
Top Gun
North & South
Batman
Balloon Fight
Lolo
Legend of Zelda
Caveman Games (I think that's the title)
Metroid
Donkey Kong Collection
Spy vs Spy
Bugs Bunny Birthday Blowout
Code Name Viper
Blaster Master
Rainbow Islands
Dragon Spirit
Pinball
Rad Racer
Spy Hunter
Adventures in the Magic Kingdom
Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers
Mickey Mousecapade
Blades of Steel
Jordan vs Bird
P.O.W.
Bionic Commando
Renegade
Ninja Gaiden
The list goes on...
These are only games that I played and really enjoyed. I combined your list to mine. Minus about four games. I have either never played them or didn't enjoy them thoroughly. That's it.
If you already beat all the games on your list your a game master title ☺
U forgot galaxy 5000, baseball simulator, werewolf, vice project doom, mega man5, and street fighter 2010
Gotta save some for Part 2.
Baseball Simulator 1.000 was a great game! So was Baseball Stars. Totally played the hell out of those games.
@@GregsGameRoom ok then, I'm waiting
Kicka s s list!
I didn’t watch this video but RC Pro AM is the best NES game. I can beat the game without losing a race. And beat every circuit 3x is beating the game. Well… Except for when orange car goes on a rampage. Can’t stop him unless u get a lucky shot and you’re not stuck with poop bombs
Also funny u mention RBI baseball… That’s my 2nd fave game. RBI Baseball 3.
lol Hogan Ally a great NES laser gun game.
Blaster master was a fun be a bit hard game was part of my childhood.
As a kid duck hunt was the only game I thought worked for the light gun
Ninja Turtles 2 was great but part 3 was better in every way IMO.
couldnt beat og castlvania for years. Could get as far as the reaper and could never kill him until i learned about getting to him with the triple shot and holy water. Makes him arguably the easiest boss. After that, the last level and drac are tough but beatable for me without any specific set up like i need for the reaper. Reaper is still the hardest boss in any cv game in my experience.
If we're talking baseball on the NES, I gotta go Baseball Stars or Little League World Series
Great video 🫡 Theres a lot I've never heard of on this list.
One game i saw i will beat eventually is final fantasy 3. not sure what version it will be honestly. I love the remake on ds version though i have it on my phone. One day it will be beat.
Unfortunately for me, because of the particular colour limitations here, I just can't get fully into most NES games. It's just a bit of a snobby personal things when it comes to visuals and aesthetic beauty. Some of them definitely still play brilliantly, but I just wish they had maybe Master System level of colours at least, and ideally say SNES colours. They don't even need to have more going on graphically or more background layers and stuff, but just enough colours that you don't really feel there's an obvious aesthetic limitation there. Ideally getting rid of any sprite flicker would be perfect too. And, actually, now that I think about it, I think porting all these games directly across to SNES, adding in more colours and using the higher sprite limits there to eliminate any sprite flicker could actually turn many of these games into just timeless classics that would still hold up today imo. Kind of an "All-Stars" approach to them all basically.
The SNES was actually meant to be backward compatible with the NES. Some games have already been ported. I don't think they look any better though.
@@GregsGameRoom Yeah, there's maybe a couple example of them adding literally like one or two extra colours to maybe the main sprites in those direct ports I've seen by the likes of infidelity, but that's about it. The cool thing is that at least someone could go and increase the colours now that the games are running directly on SNES though, so that would be neat to see. Hopefully someone will try it with a few of them at some point. If I knew how, I would maybe even give it a go myself.
What was the name of that light gun game?
Strange pronunciation, or is it just me?
You.
Elevator action looks like Fry from futurerama
I beat double dragon 2. The last part was crazy hard. You have to fight like a ton of every character in the game. The chins and bobos would roll up on ya hard
Ice Climbers for me.
The jumping is annoying for me.
@@GregsGameRoom Yes, until you get used to it and jump correctly. Still a bit nasty on ice floors..
It should have had a remake long time ago with Mario 2D style jumping.
Me and a friend (Programmer) planned to do a remake in 1990's for AMIGA and PC, but ended up with nothing. ;)
For me, ANY of the Megaman games.
To each his own!
I always loved Ninja Gaiden, I only played it on PC emulator using a keyboard, I could really far but never beat it =\
Arkanoid, 1943, and Dr. Mario
Where'd they get the memory? Remind me to tell you bout the MMC5
Oh, I know about the MMC5. It's just that the ROM size is only 256k. Crazy how much they crammed into that small amount.
@@GregsGameRoom atta boy, glad to see some education in a content creator..... excellent work
Monster in my pocket was fun.
