ITE is definitely not "It's the end". I'm studying in poly right now and I met a lot of former ITE students who are doing very well right now because they have already learnt the basic hands on techniques as compared to us O level graduates. For those who are in ITE, don't let others look down on you and continue to work hard and you can be as successful as other people as well.

It's really disappointing that people have this mindset. Back in secondary school one of my teachers said the same thing about ITE and told all the students to aim for poly or JC only. Thinking about it now makes me really angry because as a teacher he should have set a better example to everyone.

The general idea I got from my sister's anecdotes (who studies in ITE) is that the general work attitude and maturity of students is vastly different compared to students from other institutions. Those who make it to poly that your talking about? Those are the cream of the crop of ITE, the top 20%.
ITE certainly isn't the end, no doubt. But it's hardly an ideal starting point.

I am surprised how the old guy gets it compared to the newer generation. ITE courses are more relevant than ever these years. It's the 'cut-to-the-chase skillset' that many companies demand these days to be honest.

He gets it because his child went through it. Any parent would be less-informed and prolly be demeaning of ITE if their child was better than "ITE standards"
It's simply the govt's fault 20 years ago for inculcating this perception. And only recently they've been stepping up to clean this reputation.

    • @danceoffAsh
      @danceoffAsh 2 роки тому +10

@@nicholasbolas I am not sure how things were 20 years ago. These days I can see how well developed the facilities are within these ITE's funded by the government, They clearly aren't dissing ITE's in any way and have moved on. Those 'parents' are mostly to blame to be still stuck in that 20-year-old mindset but I can understand, it's just the culture here in Singapore is slow to adapt to changes or perceptions. Kids also follow their parents so that mindset is easily passed down from one generation to the next.

I think the point is of course everyone wants to get into the best schools and get the best qualification. But nobody should be judged or stereotyped just because they came from a certain institution or is studying at one. A piece of paper (qualification) does not determine your future, but what you do with it does.

Now it’s completely different, I know people whom are in a high engineering role from ite, as well as people who went to prestigious jcs, and went to uni, and dropping out because they couldn’t cope with it. It all depends on the individual mindset, and whether he has the passion for it

I myself was from ITE and went on to poly and work for 2 years and went on to University and just graduated from a computer science degree. When I was working for 2 years I felt that you still need the degree tickets for promotion or progression for IT/engineering career because in SG mostly they see qualification as you noted in governments sector or even army. Unless you are doing business then qualification don’t matter.

I can confirm, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the ITE students here are already far more eloquent and seem more socially competent than a lot of university graduates I’ve seen. Hands-on skills aside, ITE students like those represented in this video have abundant soft-skills which are vital in real life employment.
So yeah unless you plan on getting into industries that specifically require such a high level of technical knowledge and bureaucratic proficiency (usually those that need masters or PhD qualifications to stay competitive), the school/institution doesn’t matter

It is hands on learning with specific skills set. I would recommend people who doesn't like reading books or practical learning than theory to go for ITE. It is good that the government has created pathways forward for those graduates who wish to progress to getting a diploma or even University degree. Sometimes, hands on experience will tell us what we can do best.

Wait till you go Uni, Maximum emphasis on useless Theory, minimal hands on practical, and even if there is, almost irrelecant & alot is self guided. Walk into lab, then Prof ask lab assistant to just flash some slides then say `oh, you guys can start alrdy, just follow the slides. Carry on....` like WTF?!? Thought you suppose to teach. Thats what you are paid for, not some PPT monkey just do & present PPT slides only. Pls lah, who doesnt know how to create/read PPT, your job is to fucking teach. Sometimes I envy my friends from Poly / ITE technical onstotutes where the teacher really drill in their foubdation, alot of guidance. JC ppl like us rly just bookworms. Can study, can talk, can present. Just dont ask us Technical questions, cos we are not rly that well trained. Why? As i explained above. All the practical can say is self guided learning. XD Thanks Uni... dunno why I pay 8K + per sem to graduate with these toilet paper certs that doesnt equip me with relevant skillsets for the industry. Shld look at the quality of your profs, are they still up to date with the indsutry / just some academia nerd lost touch with outside tools, tech. Imho better to get adjunc profs with relevant skillsets than full time profs who alrdg lose motivation and just teach the same old material waiting for their monthly paycheck.
The industry values practical skillsets over theory. Theory is only good if you want to go into research, else hands on relevant practical skillsets is what the indsutry actually values, not how much theory/definition you can regurgitate from the stupid textbook/syllabus.
Maybe give society(employers) some time to adjust their hiring mindset.
But rly, having uni cert still impt for starting pay wise, at least for now.

Alot of people fail to realise that there is literally no other educational pathways one can go after secondary school if they failed to make it to ITE...Hence why our government and schools have allowed people to retain and retake their O's and N's levels. One look and you can tell that those 2 girls who responded negatively when asked about ite, shows that they are probably the type of person to look down on others just because they are from poly or JC it does not automatically made them higher class than any other human beings, all humans have their own area of strength so yeah it's a pity that newer generation kid were brainwashed by their parents from older generation with traditional narrow mindset to judge people base on education level. So what if a person graduated from ite? Does it mean it's the end? On contrary many of the ite students were actually more efficient and hardworking in the workforce compare to those poly and jc kids who tend to judge others more frequently base on education level. Being smart is one thing but being a good human is another. The world does not need many smart asses, what the world needs are people who are humble and kind in order for humanity to strive towards peace. War between countries often were engaged by well educated people who leads the country, so my point is that being smart is not everything in this world. Being a good human being is actually very rare and hard to find in this new era where people were motivated by greed

lets be honest. ITE is still ITE. ITE is below Poly.
In the working society. Poly grad salary ($2500 and above) is still higher than ITE grad ($2000) in MOST organizations.
ITE is also a longer path towards University. So i dont find whats the benefit of ITE in SG. who wants to go to ITE? for a guy. you have wasted 2 years in NS. now you gotta waste another 2-3 years in ITE.
Once guys who finish University via Sec4(NT) > ITE > NS > Poly > Uni. he would be 28-29 when he comes out to work and earn a decent salary which is already a huge setback to begin.
Girls that grad from NTU/NUS/SMU which i assume they will be 22-23. they will be earning almost the same salary as a guy who've been through ITE which is 28-29. If for a guy who dont go through ITE but go through local Uni i suppose they will be 26-27. Technically, an ITE grad will lose 2-3 years of salary. lets say $4k x 12 x 3, which is almost $144000. So think again, do you want to go through ITE?

    • @crehmenti
      @crehmenti 2 роки тому +17

The benefit of ITE is for students who may be less academically-inclined still have a pathway within the existing education structure leading to different job opportunities in the future. As mentioned by the male graduate, in a company there are different tiers of workers, and there would be one that need the technicians (technical people). ITE empowers the students to gain employment - with technical expertise in the respective fields - and it is for the graduate to find his own path (to wealth & success) thereafter.
As one female interviewee mentioned, nobody aspires to go ITE, and you rightly said the reasons. But not everybody can enroll into a polytechnic right after N/O Levels - what happens to them - they are stuck with just their cert. ITE gives them the hands-on knowledge. The other option would be to go straight into workforce, gaining industry experience. But fresh out of school with no knowledge of the industry - the draw back is said person would have to endure the growing pains of being the blur sotong (until they learn the ropes). They prolly will still be like blur sotong fresh out of school, but less so if they had good internship experience.
About potential money loss, in the same situation (same perimeters), it was never the person's to begin with - the person will be spending that 2-3 years retaking O Levels or finding alternatives - i.e. getting private diploma. This might be a better option, actually, but the drawback is that it is less recognised by local companies. So there still will be pay discrepancies, just that the losses are reduced.
In any case... Being an ITE-sponsored content (ad), as with all advertisements, they need to show the beautiful side of things while still being true. Their target audience is prolly the NT N Level students, and O Level students who may need an alternative route.

Please do not blame public. Going back to the root from beginning, when late Lee Kwan Yew's times, their generation only look up to elite, never look up to less smart people or learning much slower people, no they have not, getting the root issue it is the leadership of the country that are narrow minded at that point and leading to the next 20 years lousy impression of ite. They the leadership lookup to nus and ntu.. But what's now.. So many perverts.. Study so much and smart to be one like this. Now after this wrong thinking of the leaders of our so called elite ministers, how good are they?? 🤔 🤔 Education or knowledge is worthless without a good character or better wisdom. I cheer for ite that their shining time is here and forever more basically they learnt skill sets which are more useful and marketable now. ITE represent the future of Singapore be it any skills sets. I hope the society should paid more to ite their skills, because it is going to be bespoke skill no one can create but yourself. Knowledge and higher education in nus and ntu only paper and only name, nothing worthy of to spend so much money and time in nus and ntu to be employability for 20 years only and get fired and retrenched by 40 and become grab, taxi and delivery man or uncle.. Think wise and think future and have a skill not replaced easily by the govt so called foreign talents.. Hard truth and reality fact. The environment change faster than the govt can adapt, don't say ordinary working people.. If so easy and good, our heng should continue the baton. Either heng himself heng.. Free liao..& our next generation not very heng. 😂 😂

Most of us after NS pretty much lost interest of our course and take new ones instead

I was from facility technology at ite east
After NS, I tried looking for maintenance work and after 3 month of part time and job searching I gave up and just work as a night shift security guard until now

Pioneer Gen always haress student from other school so don't use ITE to shield kidnap scammer.

At the end of the day, bad result go ITE, good result go POLY or JC. discuss so much, ask so many people for what. Nothing else to post? at the end of the day, If you are the headhunter, how will you filter thousands of candidates. The perception will never change.

Oh, wait. You have to go to poly AFTER graduating from ITE...

JC is overrated... Study so much but in the end it doesn't matter... The point is there are many ppl from ITE who earn more than them. Key is need to how to sweet talk and sell yourself during interview

@@osmomosis9216 if they can get past the interview... I know degree holders cant talk well even if they have the best grades and qualifications. But when they are given a scenario, they fumble their words. Main thing is to look confident and not be scared to answer the questions, even if some are bs and exaggerated. That's how a lot of foreign trash can get paid 5-6 figure salary

it fucking matters and not overrated. A ITE graduate vs a JC graduate in a company who has good pay who would go in. Obviously JC. See mark zuckerburg and all the big ceo all reached harvard. All ite is dumb
