Just wanted to point out the absolute dedication Watch It Played has. This video was posted over 7 years ago, yet questions are still answered in the comments to this day. This is one of my favorite board games, and I only discovered it because of this video. Thank you Rodney for helping to feed my expensive addiction.
I have watched so many of your videos and I am seriously a huge fan. These videos have bailed me out of so many "I wonder how that rule works" situations. Yall are amazing! Keep up the magnificent work!
You're the best Rodney! Thanks for the explanation. I am the self proclaimed "Rule Learner" when it comes to games in the family. So this is always the first place I come before reading the rule book!
Hey Rodney I just wanted to say I started watching your channel thru the Mansions of Madness play thru you did with Andrea. I discovered back in October of 2014. I fell in love with your style of teaching and game plays and have moved on to "Watch it played" where I have watched every single video you have made! I credit Wil Wheaton for getting me back into board games but I credit you and your Family for my knowledge and taste. Thanks sooo much for what you do. I would like nothing more then to support you and your channel so next you have a fundraiser count me in! Sincerely Josef Caruthers.
Josef, what a kind and very personally meaningful reply. I'm so glad to hear you've enjoyed the videos and have been having a good time getting back into the hobby. Here's to many fun days of gaming ahead - thanks for being a part of our series!
Rodney just wanted to say all of your watch it plays have been beyond helpful. Thank you for all you do and please keep putting out your great content! You helped me understand and explain Arcadia Quest and Cry Havoc this weekend with only having to open the rulebook once! Thanks again man, for making my game nights get going fast!
You're videos are the best on the net on how to explain gameplay. I wouldn't enjoy table top games as much if I didn't have these videos as references. Awesome work!
I know I'm kind of late to this party but I just discovered this game and as usual this channel has it and it's 8 years ago already! 😅 Clean tutorial, excited to introduce this to my friends. Thanks Rodney 🤩!
I'm so happy to see that you're doing a playthrough of this game! This has been on my wishlist for quite some time, but I've never been willing to pull the trigger. This playthrough might just be the thing to decide either way. Thanks Rodney! And good luck against Luke, you'll need it!
Finally organized a group of friends to try this out at a local game cafe, I hope everything I learned from the game play series sticks! Thanks for all the hard work on these videos, this will be my first dungeon crawler type game, but if the fun you and Luke had is any indication it won't be my last!
I'm Painting the mini's for Acadia quest right now and I like to mention "Watch it played" to learn to play since you do a very clear instructional video if that's ok. I just let people know to watch this video if they want to learn, and watch mine if they want to see me paint them. You always do a great job with your instructions and its fun watching the game play after too.
Good videos. I usually watch Dice Tower for a basic overview, then head here if it sounds interesting and I want more info. Then if I'm convinced it's a good game I want to buy I read the rulebook to make sure I'm clear on everything. Works well since I gain info from each step so when I watch or read the next thing I get it faster. And I would not have the motivation to read the rulebook at first if I wasn't pretty sure I was going to like the game.
It's interesting making all the monsters completely reactive. Also this way all the players get to play with the monsters, so nobody feels left out! Sounds like a nice solution to one of the main dungeon crawler boardgames problems at the moment, but I suppose I'll see how it works out in the playthrough videos. Good luck Rodney! (I always cheer for the underdog)
Hello again Rodney! Here’s our questions, were a little hung up on the transitions between scenarios. 2. When choosing new weapons after each scenario, do you get to keep the three you bought on top of all the previous weapons you’ve accumulated? Or do you only keep 12? After a few scenarios we had collected way more than 12 cards over time and got confused by the rule book. 3. If you are able to keep everything you’ve collected, can you switch them out when resting? Or can you only switch out the 12 you’ve selected for the current scenario? Thanks so much for all of your help!
Rodney, thanks for all the top notch quality video tutorials! Your videos are amazing and I love how passionate you are about it! I always check your channel for boardgames tutorials !
At 19:50 you say only the primary target affects you dice if you attack multiple targets that can have an affect. Can you declare the primary enemy in such a group to be the one that doesn't have an effect? This would avoid taking negative effects. Might be bending the intent however.
You do always get to pick your target, so as long as it is a legitimate target, then I think this would be within the written word of the rules to target the enemy that can't effect you. Good question Chris!
I have a question about attacks that exhaust enemy cards: Farfalla (seems like the most powerful close range character in the game?) Ability: Butterfly Effect- When using one of her attack cards, she may exhaust any close hero's attack card instead. QUESTION: I gather this applies to enemy heroes that she is attacking. So does the attacker or defender pick which card becomes exhausted? Hate is a Ranged Attack with 3 attack dice. It is magic. Special Effect: "If this rolls any (crit) against a Hero, exhaust all of his cards, unless he takes 2 extra Wounds." QUESTION: Who Chose if the hero takes wounds or exhausts a card? And does this apply to all similarly phrased attacks?
I avoid address card specific effects on expansions, but my understanding is that the wording is "she may exhaust", so I'd say that means the Farfalla character decides what is exhausted. But I'm not an official source for that. For Hate, it's the player being targeted who can choose. If they are willing to take 2 wounds, then they don't exhaust their cards.
Sweet, so it's Krosmaster with a point! Kinda makes me wish I'd gotten this instead, but hey... Always appreciate these are floating around out there when I see a game that strikes my fancy and I'm not able to test it before purchase. Not a big UA-camr, but I def susbscribe to you. Good work, thanks!
Yes, if you're just moving out of a space that happens to also have a portal token in it (and therefore, not actually using the Portal with that movement), then it would trigger a guard reaction. So in that case, at 10:52, a guard reaction would happen.
Question: if I am next to a monter and attack it, it gets a “payback” reaction. If The monster is not slain, and I choose to move away from it. Does it ALSO get a “guard” reaction? Or are monsters limited to one reaction per turn.
Rodney you do an outstanding job teaching the rules & mechanics of board games! I have a question about payback reaction that I couldn't find in the rule book.If a hero attacks a monster that's 6 spaces away with a ranged attack, can the monster perform a payback if he's using melee? I don't think he'd be able to, but some members of my group think otherwise. Please clarify this so we can all be on the same page. Thanks in advance & keep up the excellent work!
With payback reactions, you'd still have to follow the rules for combat. So, if I fire a ranged attack at an enemy, my opponent can move it towards me, but if at the end of that movement, I'm still out of the monsters range, I can't be attacked by the monster.
hi Rodney, I have a question about wind blast and assassin's cloak. if I use wind blast on a target who is wearing the assassin's cloak and it is a successful hit. does the move of the target caused by wind blast trigger any wounds by the cloak?
Hey CK, I avoid answering questions around specific card effects and interactions. That's something the publisher would have to provide an answer for. Sorry I couldn't be more help in this case.
Hi Rodney, quick clarification question: when collecting coins for quests, if one is first, does one collect two coins for the quest at the end of the scenario? (one for first, one for completion) So in the shown case, would Blue [1] get one coin per quest immediately when completing them first and then one more per quest at the end, or would he collect 4 at the end?
+Flavio Gomes Some scenarios can give you a Title (an advantage in later scenarios). The symbol above a scenario name represents that title. When the symbol is shown below a scenario name, that's the scenario that title will give you a benefit in.
Does line of sight around a corner have to be 45 degrees? What if a character and its target are each 2 spaces away from a corner on opposite sides of the corner and the angles are more like 30/60 degrees? Would I still have line of sight?
According to the rules, they only mention 45 degree angles, but that may be because the 30/60 angle never comes up, due to how the halls and spaces are set up.
Rodney, you mentioned that a resurrected hero is placed onto the board at either a starting space or in a space close to one of your other heroes already on the board. Does the 'starting space' have to be the one that your team began at, or any of the starting spaces? Also, can the resurrected hero be placed in a space occupied by the enemy as long as there's only one figure there (thus not making it blocked)?
You may only resurrect in your own starting area. You may resurrect in the same space as an enemy, as long as it's not full, and close to one of your allies.
Thiago Aranha Should the original 'you start here' guild markers be left on the zones, then? Things can get confusing when playing with lots of people, especially younger ones, so remembering which was your original starting area might get forgotten, or are there not enough of the markers to do so?
firedale2002 We haven't run into that problem yet, because they advise you to also sit by your starting area, but there would be enough guild markers if you wanted to use one to mark your start area.
I just thought of a question in reference to Guard reactions. If two monsters (or one being an enemy guild) are in the same space close to me and I target one monster in that close space (or the enemy guild)...would that trigger a guard reaction from the un-targeted monster in that space? I have being playing it like it does since the monster is in a close space, but have not seen an example on this. Thanks for your time...
+Daniel Enderle Based on this: ua-cam.com/video/jZ8fMyOPZ1I/v-deo.htmlm45s I would say that as long as you are targeting a close monster, all other close enemies do not react, BUT if there are close monsters and you target a close enemy from a guild instead, the monsters WILL get a guard reaction.
I have the game, but there's one thing that I´m confused with. Some cards and monsters have the the text that says " Each CRIT deals one additional hit." Does that mean that they roll two attack dice per CRIT result? Or Roll one die, and immediately receive the hit from the effect?
+GYIYGABITE Normally a crit let's you roll an extra die and counts as a single hit. With that effect it let's you roll an extra die (as usual), but the crit die itself counts as 2 hits.
Thanks for the video. I am so excited to get my copy of the game. I had a quick question, though. Around 17:20, you state that each die only has 1 crit symbol. That is only for the defense dice, right? Don't the attack dice have 2 of each symbol on them (crit, ranged, melee)?
I just picked up the game and I was still a little confuse about the gaurd reactions, if I am in a close space near an enemy and move to a diagnal space to the the enemy would he attack me before I even move there?
+Isaac Miglio First of all, remember, you can't move diagonally. When you move away from a monster that you were "close" to, the monster attacks and THEN you complete your move.
Rodney, I just want to say I've enjoyed watching your videos over the past few years and it's so entertaining however it's terrible for my wallet! Haha can't wait to see more.
Does death card that is occupying an item slot lock the weapon to that slot or can the weapon be transferred to another character like in a rest phase? Awesome video!🥰🥰
Hi Rodney, Your videos are always the best way to learn a game thanks :). I've seen you use containers for tokens in several videos before, what exactly do you use and what is their size? I've been trying to get some for my games but haven't found anything that fits as well as the ones you use. Thanks, João
Thanks for the kind words João. Most of these containers, I just found in stores when casually browsing. I'm not sure where they came from now (my memory fails me!).
Rodney, did you guys back this on Kickstarter? If not, do you feel like you're missing anything by not having the Kickstarter 'sclusies? If so, do you think that someone who picks up the retail box will be missing out?
When I first got this game and shared it on the channel and played it with my local gaming group, I only had the base set. I don't know how to speak for someone else's reaction to not having all the KS stuff. Some people really care about that, and others don't - know what I mean?
Played our first campaign this weekend. I have 1 question. Do you only collect the exploration token from the space you end your movement in or all the spaces you move through?
Looking forward to the full playthrough, as always, Rodney! Thanks for (or as my wallet would say, curse you) for bringing another game to my attention :-)
Does anyone know where I can purchase generic colored bases similar to the ones used in Arcadia Quest? I want to use them in other games to help distinguish the mini's on other board games. Thanks!
... Have you tried sleeving the Upgrade cards? I don't know whether Mayday Red or Yellow is right, if either. Great video though, game looks fun. And colourful.
Question! Will you be playing only one scenario? And you said nothing about rerolls! (Or did you?) I think that is a pretty important concept to know from the start! I can't wait for my copy to arrive, with all my KS exclusive goodies. In the meantime I'll be following your gameplay videos (as if I needed any excuse to follow your videos now that I've been doing so since that Mansions of Madness series...)
Hey there! We're doing just one scenario, but it should give viewers a good sense of the gameplay. I didn't cover any of the bonus "effect" symbols in this video, or special exploration tokens as I felt the video was getting lengthy enough, and they are all contained on a couple pages in the rulebook that is easy to spot. However, I do expect we'll see some of them during the game play and we'll explain them as needed there. Cheers!
Where can I get this game? I've checked on amazon, ebay and my usual gaming site and I cant find it anywhere? I'm im the UK if that makes any difference
This looks really good. I'm wondering if I should get this version or Inferno? Is there anything in Inferno that makes that one preferable over this one?
Quick question. Might have missed this in the video, but...if a hero is killed, all his exploration tokens are dropped. If killed by another hero, then the killing hero gets to take one of the tokens. Are quest tokens dropped when a hero is killed, and may a killing hero choose to take one of these instead of an exploration token? Thanks!
I have been scouring the net for miniature painting services but they are all in the US. Are there any Canadian based Ones that you know of?? I would love to get my models painted for this awesome game. The grey ones just arent as engaging....
I think they are 2 very different games that share the same Chibi art style. In my opinion, AQ is a much deeper, much more strategic game. I enjoyed SDE the first few times, but got fairly bored with the samey samey feel of the game. I did Kickstart the latest SDE for a friend of mine that plays it with his kids and I think I will like it better than the previous SDE's as they have expanded to some new mechanics.
Emberstrike's ability reads: If *this* rolls any ¤, target cannot roll defense. +1(Re-roll) +1(Defense) Only the Reroll and Defense bonus is persistent. The text effect is only applied when attacking using Emberstrike itself (The "this" part refers to that card). So if you attacked with another sword, you would only gain the benefit of the reroll that the emberstrike provides.
Hey man. Great video! But I have a question regarding the quest tokens. Can any quest token be collected by any guild? Or does it have to be color specific? As in, the orange guild can only collect the orange quest token, or can they collect ANY quest token.
Glad you liked it! I lent my copy of the game out, so I don't have the campaign book to look it up for you, but "quest tokens are special Exploration tokens, whose workings are explained in each scenario", so I'd recommend checking that scenario rules to see what it says.
I shot this a long time ago, but watching back the section on Payback reactions, it's saying that monsters still follow the normal attack rules, and that you first move the monster. So if you shot a melee monster, it would move, and then, if it got in melee range, it could attack. If it didn't get in melee range, it couldn't.
I've been playing with my buddies for a few sessions. 8 years later, your video is useful. Thanks brother.
A pleasure to be able to asisst!

Wow, this is the best "How to Play" video I have ever seen for a game. Nicely orderly structured and detailed. Well done, and thanks a lot!

Very nice rundown of the rules Rodney, I cant wait for the playthrough video now!
Coming soon!
This makes me hate the fact that I was totally oblivious to the kickstart campaign up until it finished.
Did you end up finding a copy afterwards?
Oooh, miniatures to paint! Looking forward to seeing the playthrough. May the dice roll in your favor this time, Rodney.

Definitely looking forward to you guys playing this one. Looks like a cool game.

Does it trigger guard reaction moving out from a portal square at 10:52?

Hope you didn't have to wait too long!
I have one question, at 35:05 There is a "Sun Ring" at the bottom left corner that costs 0 coins. Is it considered free?
Yes but it counts as one of your 3 purchases.

Quest it accomplished.
At 34:59 at the bottom left, the card has 0 coins. Is it considered free?
Yes.
So good , cant wait to see you play with Luke
Question :
Weapon ranges :
The hero using a bow can attack six space ? Or do they have some kind of limit ( except line of side) ?
No limit other than line of sight for bows
Thank you :)
Cheers From Luxembourg :)
Thanks to Nathan for the assist!
I just got this old ish game and im concerned that in a 2 player game, it might snowball too much, any suggestions to avoid that?
Hey Alex, no, I don't have any advice for that, sorry.
Thanks again! Informative as always :)
You're very welcome - have a great time playing!
Rodney, I noticed that the sheets that have a map of the city, some of the scnearios have a symbol (square, circle, star, etc.). What are those for?
+Flavio Gomes Some scenarios can give you a Title (an advantage in later scenarios). The symbol above a scenario name represents that title. When the symbol is shown below a scenario name, that's the scenario that title will give you a benefit in.
+Watch It Played Ah, ok. Thank you very much. Great video by the way! I will surely get a copy.
I like every game you showcase so today im probably going to my Yu gi oh/board game club to buy D&D or Arcadia Quest
+Stefan Games I hope you have a great time playing!
+Watch It Played I ended up buying D&D roleplaying starter set and Castle Ravenloft they are really fun!
***** Yes, it doesn't have to be only 45º. If the line only skims a corner, you have line of sight. The example you cite is legal.
Thiago Aranha
Should the original 'you start here' guild markers be left on the zones, then? Things can get confusing when playing with lots of people, especially younger ones, so remembering which was your original starting area might get forgotten, or are there not enough of the markers to do so?
firedale2002 We haven't run into that problem yet, because they advise you to also sit by your starting area, but there would be enough guild markers if you wanted to use one to mark your start area.
Thank you both for the quick responses!
I'm thinking of trying to find this for our group.
For the quest tokens, do you have to collect the one of your own color or can you collect any of them, or does it change based on the scenario?
It's based on the scenario and not really linked to your player color.
thanks
Thanks for the video. I am so excited to get my copy of the game. I had a quick question, though. Around 17:20, you state that each die only has 1 crit symbol. That is only for the defense dice, right? Don't the attack dice have 2 of each symbol on them (crit, ranged, melee)?
Attack dice have 1 crit, 3 swords and 2 bows. Ranged attacks are slightly harder than melee attacks.
***** Ah, thanks. I didn't know that. I had always assumed that it was just 2 of each. Thanks!
***** how many shields and blanks do the defense dice have?
Ismael Cebrian Marco One Shield, one Crit.
Hopefully your lighter wallet means you have more fun games on your shelf that you're enjoying :)
Thank you very much for this video , Rodney.
I love your youtube channel and I´ll order a copy of this awesome game inmediately after writing this ;-)
Hope you have a wonderful time with it!
Great content Brother! Congrats!
Thank you Daniel!
@@WatchItPlayed Cheers all the way from Brazil!
@@danielzechim5552 *waves back from Canada*!
Does death card that is occupying an item slot lock the weapon to that slot or can the weapon be transferred to another character like in a rest phase? Awesome video!🥰🥰
That card cannot be accessed until the curse is removed.
Hi Rodney,
Your videos are always the best way to learn a game thanks :). I've seen you use containers for tokens in several videos before, what exactly do you use and what is their size? I've been trying to get some for my games but haven't found anything that fits as well as the ones you use.
Thanks,
João
Thanks for the kind words João. Most of these containers, I just found in stores when casually browsing. I'm not sure where they came from now (my memory fails me!).
Rodney, did you guys back this on Kickstarter? If not, do you feel like you're missing anything by not having the Kickstarter 'sclusies? If so, do you think that someone who picks up the retail box will be missing out?
When I first got this game and shared it on the channel and played it with my local gaming group, I only had the base set. I don't know how to speak for someone else's reaction to not having all the KS stuff. Some people really care about that, and others don't - know what I mean?
im sorry if you say it on the video but english isnt my language, why Lord Fang comes with low levels (1-3) if he only appear in mid-high levels? THX!
Sorry, I shot this long enough ago, that I don't recall what components come in the box, and don't have an easy way of checking for you.
Played our first campaign this weekend. I have 1 question. Do you only collect the exploration token from the space you end your movement in or all the spaces you move through?
As long as there is not enemy in the space with the token, even by passing through the space, you pick up the token.
thx !
Looking forward to the full playthrough, as always, Rodney! Thanks for (or as my wallet would say, curse you) for bringing another game to my attention :-)
Hope you enjoyed the play through :)
Does anyone know where I can purchase generic colored bases similar to the ones used in Arcadia Quest? I want to use them in other games to help distinguish the mini's on other board games. Thanks!
Did you have any luck finding some?
@@WatchItPlayed unfortunately I haven't.
... Have you tried sleeving the Upgrade cards? I don't know whether Mayday Red or Yellow is right, if either.
Great video though, game looks fun. And colourful.
SadisticFishing I avoid sleeving small cards in general. Though I usually do sleeve the standard sized cards.
damn you, now I want this immediately just got in contact with my local board game supplier on if they can get this in for me because of you :)
Brent Syme Play through starting soon to tide you over :)
:D looking forward to it
Once again, I had a need. Once again, Rodney comes to the Rescue.
Very happy to have assisted - have a great time playing!
How many scenarios are you doing 1,2 or continuing a past campaign?
ThovenTheGamer We'll do one Scenario and include the Upgrade phase.
cool, i wanted to see how that works, thank you!
Cheers!
***** Will you be recording the game on one of those sheet thingies just in case you wanna show us scenario 2 in the future?
Where can I get this game? I've checked on amazon, ebay and my usual gaming site and I cant find it anywhere? I'm im the UK if that makes any difference
I do know where it can be found in the states, but I'm not sure where else: www.miniaturemarket.com/cmnaq001.html
This looks really good. I'm wondering if I should get this version or Inferno? Is there anything in Inferno that makes that one preferable over this one?
I would say that's mostly going to come down to personal preference.
Thanks!
They can - quest tokens are considered a kind of exploration token.
I have been scouring the net for miniature painting services but they are all in the US. Are there any Canadian based Ones that you know of?? I would love to get my models painted for this awesome game. The grey ones just arent as engaging....
I'm not personally familiar with any Canadian ones. I'm sure they are out there, but I haven't personally looked into it.
***** That's ok. Ill keep looking. Thanks!
+adam heeley
if you find one can you let us know?
3ldfilms sure...so far i have just been asking local hobbie shops with no luck :(
Ryan Coleman cool thanks ill check it out. :)
It does make me wonder if this game will ever have a cross over with Super Dungeon Explore! :D
It will at my house ... ;)
Not yet!
So how would you say this game compares to Super Dungeon Explore? Do you feel that they scratch the same itch?
I'm not one to compare games - but you can, as both are now on our channel :)
I think they are 2 very different games that share the same Chibi art style. In my opinion, AQ is a much deeper, much more strategic game. I enjoyed SDE the first few times, but got fairly bored with the samey samey feel of the game. I did Kickstart the latest SDE for a friend of mine that plays it with his kids and I think I will like it better than the previous SDE's as they have expanded to some new mechanics.
so if i had emberstrike and attacked with another sword, would i get emberstrike's special effect?
Sorry Samin, I recorded this long enough ago that I don't recall the abilities of Emberstrike. Is it shown in the video? Do you have a time stamp?
No, but emberstrike is a level 5 upgarde sword, which if rolls crits the target cant roll defense die
Emberstrike's ability reads:
If *this* rolls any ¤,
target cannot roll defense.
+1(Re-roll) +1(Defense)
Only the Reroll and Defense bonus is persistent.
Full play thought!!! Yeah!!!
My question is if I attack a monster who is far away from me and I'm a ranged and he's a melee how can he perform a payback if he's too far away.
@WatchItPlayed appreciate it thank you so much !!!
You're like the David Attenborough of boardgames
+Brian Hayne Ha! Thank you - I think :)
