  • UPDATE: My NEW full glass touchscreen • Build Your Own 50 Inch...
People always ask how I made 50" 4k Touchscreen Recording Console and for under $400. Here's how I made it. Could this be the RAVEN killer or a replacement for a fraction of the price?
I am using this with Presonus Studio One DAW, but I have tested it with Pro Tools and Logic as well.

Could this replace the Slate Raven for a fraction of the price?

    • @RokSivante
      @RokSivante 4 місяці тому +2

Probably not. The hardware is only half the equation with Slate.
Yeah, you could spend a ton of time custom-programming all the different gestures for your DAW that Slate Control has all ready to go, figured out and optimized by the pros… but even then, you’re gonna be missing the batch commands and all the other UI features of the Slate software designed to work with it.
Decent option for those on a budget tho.

Thanks, this like next level for me.I am old school with hard disk recorders but recently got studio 5 on my PC because i bought an interface.I use a monitor in my studio as the center point of my work flow.I bought an AirBar the sets at the bottom of my laptop (pc) screen andit turned it into a touch screen with much success.I touch the Lap top screen and move the fader's and other things in the studio 5 software while looking at the movements on the big monitor. With the touch screen frame all i have to do is touch the big monitor screen,Next Level!!!!!!!!

Thank you for putting this video together and your other video showing how to make the desk. Hugely innovative thinking that went into this to give us Tony Stark level technology. I ordered my IR frame right after seeing this and I have a 50 inch just hanging around... however if it does not work as well I can see getting the TV you have recommended (decent pricepoint)_ Thanks again bud, this was the best idea I've seen in studio tech in a long time all while saving a buck... knowledge is power...

I assume you have amassed some experience with the IR grid frame, are you satisfied with it? And what happens when a fly lands on the screen and starts walking around?
What is the thickness of the frame? I am considering this for my own project (40 inch under plexiglass as table top for retro games) and touch would be a nice addition. If you don't mind the questions, thanks in advance.

    • @TheDerekFrank

It just depends on the software. Macs dont work well with touchscreens but PCs do, and some DAWs dont have a lot of touch options. This is also not a native touchscreen, so you have to have the software to make it work to its top potential. It's still really easy to setup though

I am a bit intrigued by this setup... is it possible to make the frame flush with the glass/TV or is it dependent on sensors being above the screen?
I'm basically wanting to build my own monitor-table where the screen is basically invisible when not turned on. Like the tables shown in the original TRON movie. The goal would be a full table surface that is one big flat sheet of shiny plexiglass :D

    • @TheDerekFrank

@@beach_hike9006 You need a true touchscreen panel with the sensors embedded in the panel for that. These IR frame beam invisible infra red beams just above the surface of which it is placed on and how those beams are interrupted by fingers is interpreted to actions. Doesnt overheat at all. It still functions like a normal tv and since the frame is infrared, it doesn't produce any heat. Pros - it looks great, is easy to use, being able to just touch and move faders makes work flow faster.
Cons - if you dont have it calibrated right, it will do different things with your touch gestures, but that is pretty minimal. Also, sometimes I think there is a ghost in in the house because it will start randomly clicking on things, but turns out, it was just a fly hahahahaha

Beware of skynet..🤣🤣 I'm very tempted I just want to know if I'll be doing the building correctly without any "where did I skip a step" sort of thing. Is there a place where you can get it customized? I'd like to have one that is 54" by 17" sort of like a long panel or even 3 that I can split to make 54" total and almost bezzless. Wonderful video btw great material thank you for sharing...

It will definitely support single touch. I think Ableton supports multitouch but I dont think Reaper does. So short answer, yes it will work, but not as many functions as other DAWs

Unless you are using something like UPDD, you are not even utilizing 1% of the capabilities of Touchscreen. Also, UPDD is not just for Mac. I use UPDD on windows. It is magical. Windows Native touch sucks and Windows and S1 do not let customize gestures but UPDD does.

    • @TheDerekFrank

@@TheDerekFrank UPDD Mac has more functions than UPDD Windows. That's just what it is. I read UPDD manual (the documentation) and immediately did some tweaks and I can use the touchscreen to it's Full potential. Also, Programmed as in? Something like Liine Lemur or Open Stage Control or something like the Touchscreens designed by Mark Wary?

Well, I also have installed a 20point Multitouch IR (from GreenTouch) on my 43" 4K TV and I am using Gesturesign with it as well, on windows.
But sad to say, it will never be a Raven.
      Why?
      1. Raven's main things work on mac because of the UPDD driver. You can use an IR frame on Mac and just call it a day. On Mac, buying an IR frame and buying the UPDD driver will actually make a true Raven Killer.
On windows, well not so much.
UPDD driver's 90% functionality is stripped down in its Windows version anyway.
      So yeah, that's my experience.
For basic touch, or basically using the touchscreen as a toy, like moving faders, tweaking some knobs and that's it, this can be great.
For advanced functionality like gestures or using the Touchscreen on Arrangement or Midi editing windows, this'll be subpar compared to Mouse.
      I am not bashing you.
I have installed one and so sharing the experience.
