Solo-Winter Camping In The Alaska Range (With Stella)

- In this video Stella and I are field testing our new hot tent. We are in the Alaska Range, above timberline. The temperature is -15F (-26C) and we have a fair amount of wind to deal with. The tent should take about 15 minutes to setup (for one person), but it took me much longer due to filming myself throughout the process, so by the time I finished we were both ready to get inside and get the fire started.
The deadman poles I buried were for tying down the tent in a windy area where the ground is frozen and there are no bushes or small trees to fasten to. The anchors worked very well. The longer poles were to bury alongside the tent and provide tie off anchors for the rainfly (although I did not show the process in the video).
Once inside, the tent heated up very quickly and maintained a temperature of around 75F throughout the night. At times, it got too warm in fact, and I had to unzip the door flap to cool it down.
The heater I am using my favorite little camp stove, the Trekker, made by Kni-Co Manufacturing. I have worn these stoves out by hauling them all over the country and putting them though a lot of abuse. They are just fantastic and have so many practical applications.
My tent is built by Airframes Alaska. They have graciously provided it to me for the making of this video, and I have to say I am impressed with it. It is ruggedly built with many well thought out features. Here is a link to their website: airframesalaska.com

Great tent. These types of arctic tents sure give the traditional wall tents a big run for the money - especially with portability. Great video keeping your best friend warm throughout.
Agree. I have a traditional wall tent and they are not even on the same ball field as this tent. It was 75 degrees F. in this tent shortly after building the fire. They are amazing.

Can't remember the last time I journeyed out in the frozen tundra, set up a tent, and made robe hooks by the fire. Nice, episode. Warm and comfortable once settled in. I once set up a tent in 4 feet of snow in Ontario Canada to ice fish. Stayed 4 nights by myself. Was also cozy, and was enjoyable.
I can appreciate your ice fishing trip in Ontario. I love solo camping trips, especially in the winter months. Take a good book and maybe a project to work on and a dog of course, and it is a wonderful experience.

What a wonderful video, I have to admit my mom and I all but gush over Stella; she reminds me of my brother’s previous dog in a lot of ways. Again, the video is amazing and makes us feel like we’re really there. The glow from the tent as the sun went down was beautiful!
Good morning Rachel. I am so glad you enjoyed the video. I was just telling my wife last night, that I needed to take a day or two and go do some winter camping. It has been hovering around -30 F so the weather is ideal. Not a lot of snow cover yet though. I would like to see more of coming down this time of year. Anyway, in the next couple of months I will get out there an set up a few of my favorite camps. I can't wait to share those videos with you. Good morning. My wife and I spent our honeymoon in Girdwood (36 years ago). We hiked the trails and ate at the Double Musky every night. It was wonderful. We still go back there every few years on our anniversary and have some Cajun food for old time's sake.

It is a cozy tent! Even at subzero temperatures it was so warm inside I didn't even need to get inside my sleeping bag. Very comfortable for sure.

Love Alaska tent and tarps arctic ovens, they are bomb shelters for sure and true 4 season tent. My only complaint is they are so dang heavy. Great video!
Yes, they are some amazing tents. I purchased my first tent from them about 35 years ago. They have come a long way since then. This tent stayed at nearly 80F as long as I had the fire stoked up. I didn't even get inside my sleeping bag. I just laid on top of it. Thanks for watching.

Good afternoon my friend. I appreciate you watching. Winter camping is one of my favorite activities. I have always loved being out in the mountains at night. Last year I spent the night alone deep inside a glacier cave. It was an eerie place. All night I could hear water running hundreds of feet further back in the cave. With my flashlight I could see 5 feet or more into the ice anywhere I looked. There were boulders, sticks, and other debris "floating" in the ice. Suspended there thousands of years before. It was fascinating. I spent the night exploring and snowmobiled out toward morning. Being outdoors (year-around) is just something I enjoy and would never miss it. Peace.
