  • Fixing a lazy Sun Shade on a W220 2004 Mercedes Benz S500. It's a short 5-minute free fix and can be done by just about anyone. Most of the time this should work, unless it's too far gone. It worked on this car and was fully functional for another 2 1/2 years. However, be advised that we eventually had to replace that visor. If you keep lubricating it, it should last longer or indefinitely. We failed to keep re-lubricating it.
    Stuff used:
    Silicone Paste: amzn.to/30YBHGI
    Trim Removal Tools: amzn.to/2YrOi7F
    The Torx Screw Driver Set I used is no longer available on Amazon as I bought it years ago. Here is an alternate one: amzn.to/2LKWtGa
    30 day free trial on Amazon: amzn.to/2KAF69c

    Totally worked I cleaned the rod first with a little WD-40 and then put on just regular Vaseline silicones probably better cause it’ll probably last a little bit longer

    OMG it works, Thanks heaps you just saved me $120 for new replacement, I just took it off, quick squirt of WD40 and all good again , while I had it off I also added a extension using a piece of cardboard slipped into the plastic band on the back of the visor.

      It works sometimes. And sometimes it doesn’t. It’s an old video but some lube goes a long way. Don’t use WD40. It’s not a lubricant. If it’s too far gone you may have to just get another shade. Don’t dismount it. The second shade I lubed right where it was. Good luck. I hope it works.

    Thank-you! Can anyone explain how applying a lubricant to the metal rod can restore the friction needed to hold up the visor?

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  5 років тому +16

      The rod that is inside, when to dry or rusty, cannot reset to its resting position. When lubricating it, it can pop into place holding it in. I want you to try this: pull out the visor, telescope it out, rotate it up in its resting (closed) position and slide it back in. If it holds, you just need a little lube. If it doesn’t, you’re beyond repair and you need to get a new one, probably on eBay.

      Yeeaaah, Totally didn't work on my POS 2017 CR-V. Apparently the Japanese haven't improved on their Sun Visor technology, unlike my 2004 Jeep which slaps up hard. - I might add, the arm rest cushioning completely sucks on the CR-V too. (Juss say'n)

      Turbo Snail 😓 It’s not loosely, looks just like yours. It’s up but not all the way. Mmm I have no lub on hand so I had to amazon prime it. Lol. I live in Wisconsin, there’s plenty of snow here still and it’s super bright so the sun visor has been a good friend.

  • @joeh690
    @joeh690 4 місяці тому +1

    Out of curiosity how does silicone paste work for a loose sun visor that does not stay up wouldn't that make it even more floppy, I can understand the first one but the second one doesn't make sense to me ?

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  4 місяці тому +1

      That’s an excellent question. It’s too dry, tight, so it doesn’t let it snap in all the way at the end. What happens when you flip it up, it’s all plastic and it bends as it’s not “loose” enough. Instead of rotating, you’re actually bending the “stick”. Lubricating it, lets it reduce resistance, less flex and therefore it’ll reach that point where it needs to sit. It’s really hard for me to explain without any visual aid. It doesn’t always work. It’s really a bandaid because inevitably it’ll just fail. This usually gives it another 2, 3 or 4 years of operation before you have to ultimately replace it.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  2 роки тому +2

      It’s just old. The bar has a flat spot at the end and that’s what keeps it in place. Without lube it rounds out and makes it sag. Re-lubricating it once or twice works but it’s a matter of time until it fails. Finally, 4 years later we ended up buying one from eBay and it started sagging right away and really it was in worse condition than our original one. I just can’t justify buying a new one. Maybe if your car is mint it might be worth spending the money for a brand new one.

    • @Turbo_Snail
      @Turbo_Snail  5 років тому

      Yes. Because it makes it all the way back to it’s resting position where it snaps in. If it’s let’s say rusty or too dry, it can’t make it over the last bit (call it a hump) to lock in. Some people fix it, for others it’s just beyond “lubricapable”.

      It’s either deformation or possibly rust or oxidation on the inside. In our case after 12 years of usage it just wore off. Lubricating it, brings it back to live for a while later but it’s inevitable once it gets to that point.
