Brilliant video. The shifter linkage will come off from the top, despite what most of the forum posts say. Well it did on my facelift W220. Once the three retaining Allen head bolts are removed I twisted the mechanism backwards as far as I could and the linkage will the slide out of the shift lever. It has a plate cast into it so it won’t come apart in its normal operating range (2:30). The spring clip on it just stops sideways movement. All it needs is gently easing out of the machined groove in the selector lever (2:30). A much easier job than it appears at the start. It pays to look through tutorials to find good ones like this!
Yeah, I was hoping to get it off from the top as all I read was having to get underneath and I got discouraged. But it worked. I wish I had better shots in the video. Maybe next time someone has the issue I may be able to redo this video for better quality and angles. Thanks for watching!
Wow great that you did this on your own!!👍 the dealer loves to charge ridiculous prices... I am a huge fan of these era S and CL class Mercedes Benz, but I wouldn't call them vintage just yet!😄 lol
You are right. It’s not really vintage. It’s just, the car is only 3 years younger than its owner. That’s pretty old. Either way we love the car and we saved almost $3000 so far doing various repairs our self. There are more videos to come including spark plugs and blower motor. Thanks for the kind words! :)
Great job and great video, my 03 s430 just got stuck, so I’m going to do the same, the black plastic piece with the spring is the piece I’ll be extracting out correct?
I had same problem with my 2004 S430 shifter stuck in park but I got lucky . I was ready to start ripping everything apart when the car battery died and had to replace with a new battery. after I installed the new battery guess what? the car was shifting again. apparently on those cars once the voltage of the battery drops to 10 V or below , the transmission locks up and won't allow you to drive the car to protect the transmission. so if you had a similar problem, check the brake switch first if OK check the battery voltage and if OK then take the shifter apart to replace a broken piece.
Thank you mate My car is 2004 SL500 and it has only 60k and I’m having problem with removing it from PARK position but today I left the car on for about 10 minutes and suddenly was fine So the battery could be it. Btw, what do you mean by “ parking switch “. ?
I pried the c-clip open. I widernd the gap. After it’s all done you can squeeze it back together. Even if you get underneath the car you can’t really see what you’re doing. So for an at-home fix, that’s the best I could come up with.
Could you please describe how to disconnect the shifter from transmission link? On 2:47 you are showing it but no details how did you unplugged this? I am afraid it could be the most difficult procedure. Thanks
I’m sorry I didn’t get any video of that. I was struggling and tried to figure out how to do it. What I did was bend that little U shaped clip away/out with some big needle nose pliers. This will let that little button slide out. When you reinstall it, squeeze it back in. You go from |_| to \_| that is enough to release it. It is very easy. The hardest part was actually lining up the console back into place as I did it by myself.
Turbo Snail thank you. I am going to take it off because I have started to feel hard shift to P and backwards. I am afraid that this plastic part started to broke and shifting is different now. Better to get it earlier then it will stuck on P forever.
That is exactly how ours started. Eventually it wouldn’t work anymore. Luckily it was in front of our home and not somewhere out and about. Have someone help you put the console back in. It was a bit of a pain by myself. Good luck and thanks for watching. Check out our other videos if you can.
Hello there! Great job indeed. Can you please help me with a suggestion as to how to disconnect the main electric plug, the one with the white cap, that is in front of the shifter, basically towards the P position. Also some suggestions for disconnecting the metal clip from the arm? Forever grateful!
Watch the second video, the update I made for this as well. Maybe it will answer some questions. On the metal clip there is a little [ that holds the shifter in place. You gotta bend it out. At least that’s the only way I’ve managed to remove it. In regards to the plug, spray some electrical cleaner on it. Maybe it’s just caked up? I really don’t recall anymore but some of the plugs were a little harder to take apart. Usually plugs have a little plastic latch. Once depressed they usually release. I hope this helps, the repair was done over 3 years ago. It’s hard to recall. The 2nd video may reveal some additional steps/footage. Good luck!
Major thank you is in order. You helped me a lot with this info. Took me about 3 hours to get the whole thing out and put it all back together. This was exactly what my problem was tho.
Thank you for watching. Please watch my follow up video to that as well. And if it’s not too much to ask please thumbs up it. It helps on my end. Thank you again!!!
@@Turbo_Snail I have watched that video but will offer a response. I did appreciate that view also and it helped it me make my final choice.I do think my sensor went out because there was nothing broken.and had metal or aluminum lever.
Update. While driving my 01 clk430 home after doing the workaround I set it to cruise control. Cruise control would not disable driving through a school zone and was accelerating while on the brake pretty hard as cops looked at me strangely. . It you have to do this you might wanna check your cruise control in a safe place if you expect to use it. Just a heads up. I parked mine while I wait for cheap eBay replacement shifter.well 200 plus a year square trade warranty for 49. Worth it. Be safe. Do what you you have to do.
Hello, after remove the plastic part broken inside who stuck the shifter and reinstall all Now I have my parks sensors not working is it normal without this part or I forget to plug something ? I check two times …
Thanks for reply. The three button : tow, park and electric sun screen are powered but When i press button « tow off » the red light on button « park off » appears To get off the light I have to press the button under tow « off alarm » I do à mistake ??
Hey brotha I just did this to my 2004 S430 , I put everything back together started the car fine after removing the plastic piece out and left it out , drove it down the street parked it and tried to go back to it to start it now when I turn the key nada, you don’t even hear the starter trying to turn , but the battery is definitely not dead because everything turns on! Do you have any idea what this could be? I was reading something about a transmission control module letting the starter know it’s in park
@@Turbo_Snail Took the shifter assembly back apart and noticed a small black rectangular plug was disconnected that connects to the shifter , (there is also a white one which is the same shape and size and a yellow one which is smaller than the first two) I connected those back to the shifter/ accessories and Walla!!! When anybody goes to do this just make sure you remember everything you disconnect and connect it back in the same place! Car turns on and shifts no problem thank you sir for the fast reply
Thanks for the video. I just fixed a w220 today the same way. Only issue I have is that it goes very easily out of park even without pressing the brake pedal. It clicks though when pressing the brake pedal. But is seems the aluminium replacement part has a little too much play the keep the shifter locked in park… 🤷♂️
Ah that’s sucks. That means it doesn’t push against that actuator. Well it works for now, but if it bothers you or you are in a state with inspections, you gotta fix it again. I’m glad you got it “fixed” tho!
Mercedes W220 thank you for your video I managed to unlock the gearbox and remove this plastic element what do you mean it is dangerous if you remove it I saw in the comments your statement that it is better if it is for example metal fitted ?
I don't mind not having this safety feature in it. Some people think it's dangerous. I for one don't let 3 year olds drive my car so it should be okay. Basically if you remove that, you don't have to step on the brake anymore to shift out of park. Can it be dangerous? Perhaps? But that is up to you to decide whether this is a feature you must have. If you do, follow my link and buy a metal version of that plastic part from Amazon. It's okay enough if you want to put it in.
thank you my friend thanks to you I saved 150 dollars In Poland such a service costs I will tell you that it is safe without it, because nothing will block you anymore, and with this plastic maybe something can always block you in my opinion it is made so that the car is not stolen it is primarily a protection against car theft, or maybe it is made of plastic specially so that in case of emergency it can be broken manually because you will not break the metal one maybe that is the whole philosophy, Thank you again my friend how many people are happy with you how much good you have done for everyone it is a pity that I cannot send you a picture of my S class, because it is really beautiful maybe I will find your email and send it to you Once again warm greetings Waldek 👋🏾
I think, like on a manual where you need driver input to shift to a certain extent, you need a driver to push the brake to shift out of park. This way a passenger doesn't shift mistakenly. When you drive manual you usually pull the e-brake, however, automatic drivers often dont do that. Here in the USA, this service would be over $1000 as the dealer will not fix the broken plastic but install a complete new shifter. $150 sounds a lot more reasonable than what they do over here. Yes, I would love to see your ride. I enjoy seeing what other people do to their cars. I'm from Austria so I'm used to people working on the body, the interior and a bit on the engine. Here most cars just have crazy engine work and very little on the outside. I enjoy watching UA-cam videos from Wolfgangsee where they have several meets a year, even back in the day when I used to live there. I'd love to visit and perhaps participate in such an event again. Please email me @ turbo_snail@aol.com
Thanks for this video! That plastic part was cracked in half when I got it out so I'm pretty sure that was the problem! One day later my car won't start. It could be completely unrelated but I'm wondering if you have any advice. Is there any "safety" switch that might have been affected by removing that? The car dash lights up, electrical is on but it won't turn over. No clicking. Nothing. Any help you can provide is appreciated! Thanks again.
Have you checked the battery? Some people leave the lights on during the procedure and it drains the battery. Also, try to disconnect the battery and wait 20 minutes. Car will reset itself.
Wow. Fantastic. Done with mine and is working fine. I had 3 issues which I didnt seen on your video how to go around it but manage sort it out… Many thanks
I replaced on my S class W220 with an aluminium one and when I press the brake pedal when the car is on Park it makes a clicky noise because of that part. Does your car after the repair make any noise when you press the brake pedal?
Check my updated video. I installed it after an argument with a mechanic in this videos tread. Honestly, it would have been fine without it as long as you know the risks.
@@Turbo_Snail It's too risky without that stop check key, you just don't know what a small child is capable of incase they may jump to the front seat while the engine is running!!
Something similar happened to me with a 2003 SLK320. Could not get into park, could not remove the key. The battery was old and not charging well. I replaced the battery and that solved the problem for me. Crazy!
I did this on my s400cdi. After you disconnected the shifter did you had a EPC warning? My car now does not rev past 3500 rpm. And there is no boost on my turbos. Do you think it could be related for this repairs? Does it need some sort of reset? Thank you
I dont think it's related. Did you disconnect the battery before working on the car? Maybe try disconnecting the battery, let it sit for 30-45 minutes, reconnect and see if it recalibrates. Check if your car has a second battery. Make sure both are disconnected.
Hello I have a 2006 S430 Mercedes Benz. When I start the car up, press down on the brake to attempt to move the gear shift into drive, the car will not move. Keep in mind I can move the gear shift from park to drive. Do you have a idea what the problem could be
You can check if the shifter linkage is connected properly. There is a little rubber piece that wears out, maybe it fell off. I hope its a $0.50 problem... good luck.
Good morning. Lol I’ve been up all night googling what went wrong with my girls 2006 Mercedes clk350. She was driving to work yesterday, just as she hopped on the freeway, the car stalled out and didn’t want to accelerate. We had to get it towed home. I checked the transmission oil and it’s black. We r the second owners to this car. We got it per-inspected, before purchase, and were told the car was left in a garage for years jus because it needed an oil change. And nothing was wrong with it. So I have 2 questions for you. One: should I change the transmission oil on the car before trying your method??? Or Two: Do your method taking out the most likely broken piece of plastic and then change transmission oil??? P.S Sorry for the long story lmao Thank you for your time
Sorry to hear about your breakdown. Those are 2 completely unrelated issues. Why did the car stall out? Engine oil/level? Transmission oil? It doesn’t have anything to do with the shifter. The shifter wouldn’t even let you put the car in drive. I was told by Mercedes tech that once your transmission oil is over 100k miles you shouldn’t touch it anymore. A transmission tech told me you can change the oil at any time/age. Not sure who to believe. The S500 has the same oil for 140k miles now and the only person willing to touch it seems shade so I’m scared to take it anywhere. If the transmission oil is black you may have bigger issues in hand if that’s why the car conked out. If all fails, not knowing your exact situation, and you know how to change transmission fluid. I would try doing that and see where it takes you from there. Just do a filter and oil and I wouldn’t flush out all of it. That being said, I’m in no way qualified to make such a decision on your behalf. The way I look at it, if it’s already broken, can I make it any worse? If the answer is no, what do you have to loose. Check mbworld.org. It’s a wealth of resources. I wish you good luck and I hope you get to enjoy that car for many years to come!
@@marshallw.6343 I was told that by a Mercedes tech. This oil was supposed to be lifetime oil. However, later a memo surfaced that oil should be changed every 60k miles (100k km). For people who haven't done the oil changes on time they were advised to not change it if it was never changed before 100k. There has been a class action law suit and people got some compensation for that (if you were the original owner). At this point (140k miles), I'm just gonna run it until it dies. I've read, expected life should be around 200-250k miles (unless you are racing or towing). Now, I had to change a transmission cooler hose and there was some oil that came out. The oil seemed still in good color and no contamination. I expected it to be black.
@@Turbo_Snail thanks, everything you've shown has been BIG help. I'm having a hard time with that small bolt though, in trying to take out the gear box. I'll get it somehow.
Does this issue I’ve getting stuck in park have anything to do with the weather? I have the same problem and it seems to be fine when it’s 45° and up but then gets stuck when it’s colder. I have had it checked at a trusted car repair service and the Mercedes dealer and have not had any good results.
I’m not sure about that. However, looking at my views it seems to spike in the autumn and the spring. Not sure if that could be related or just coincidence.
@@BadidaJackson same here when is cold I have to let it heat and wait so I can’t shift but when is hot like today is not even stock 😑 I told my friend he thinks is the transmission
My 2000 clk 320 gets stuck in drive and neutral then I just turn the car off and when I turn it back on it usually cooperates could I have the same issue?
I couldn’t imagine a situation why it would get stuck in neutral as well. The little plastic piece I took out is strictly for the release out of park. That’s all it does. I would open it up and look for some type of obstruction or maybe just a good cleaning and lubrication, you won’t believe all the stuff that gets down there after 20 years. I hope you find the issue. Good luck.
Hi first of all thank you for your video I was able to remove all the parts but stuck with attach part. I noticed you did not record that part. How did detach it.
its a little clamp thats stuck on the side. Everyone tells you to get to from underneath however I was able to just pry it apart. Dont worry you won't damage anything. Its where the transmission attaches to the shifter. I used a flat head screwdriver. With a little force it will open up.
Hi Sir i just got out my shifter today and openend it , i try to get the plastiv lever uout , but a pin , is stuck in it could you please help me out i got pictures and everything please help me ! greetingsss jessie
There is a little clamp on the bottom left side. Deep down. Pry it away. It’s usually held in place by a little rubber prong but the car being that old, it’s probably rotten away and should come apart with a little force. Read the comments and description.
Hi there - great video! Really informative and it's given me the confidence to have a go with my SL350, which has started to suffer the same problem - and it's getting worse. A couple of questions - on some forums I've seen people saying you need to be careful about blowing the airbags because of a sensor in the area. Did you consider this 'issue' or not? And what do you need to do to avoid a possible problem with the aibags? thanks and regards
Disconnect the battery and wait about 20 minutes before doing anything around electronics. That will prevent any accidental airbag deployments. That being said. I can’t imagine why there would be a sensor for the airbags there.
Not at all. Whenever working on anything electrical, unless you know what you’re doing, disconnect the battery. You may loose custom settings like preset radio stations but it’s better than triggering an airbag or frying some electronics.
@@Turbo_Snail Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry but english is not my first language and I still did get it if you took the broken part (the plastic lever) out of the transmission module or you glued or something and put it back together. Thank you for your videos and help-

How to move the lever in neutral if it is gear shifter stuck to remove the central bolt? Can you please tell how you put the gear shifter at neutral position?
You can hit it with a mallet. It’ll work maybe a couple of times. I got lucky. I had to pull the lever maybe 20 times before it released to do the service.
Oh man. That is a sensitive topic. I was told by a Mercedes dealership that they wouldn’t change my fluid because we had over 100k and it was never changed. Then a transmission mechanic said it’s fine to do filter and oil change. No flush. I wish I could tell you more. You should consult with a Mercedes dealership and let them do it. Yes, I said it, try the dealer first. That’s a $6000 transmission you’re potentially playing with.
Do it! No such thing as a service free trans. No matter what Mercedes says. The trans needs new fluid because the old fluid loses viscosity. And the trans will eat itself regardless eventually. If it does break after replacement then the transmission is destroyed already anyway and you just saved yourself a breakdown because now you know.
@@mohamedelyaouti2051 Let's see. Maybe. I have a busy month at my "Real Job". Once I'm done. Maybe I should do a video and see what happens. I just hope its not a $6000 mistake!!! ;)

@@mohamedelyaouti2051 I actually have all the service records as well. Apparently the previous owner had 100k mile warranty and everything was always taken care of, however, not the transmission :/
Sorry, I'm not a mechanic. It's easy tho if you want to try it yourself. If you email me I can recommend you maybe an actual mechanics. There is a great local Mobile Mechanic that would probably charge you about that, maybe even less.
Thanks for the video! Helped a lot! Although, when I opened up the shifter, I noticed the piece wasn't broken. It was still in one piece. My Benz seems to only want to shift from park into R, N, or D some of the times. Other times it locks up. Do you think it could have something to do with the solenoid?
Once you see it in person it is hard to fathom why someone can charge so much money for a 50 cent part. Even if it was made of gold it couldn’t cost that much. SMH. I’m glad you got it fixed. I developed a bad habit of not stepping on the brake anymore when I’m shifting out of park. ;)
I have 2 videos. The original one that got some outrage because I removed the safety. And then the other one, where I put one back in. Just search the Mercedes playlist. I tried to make it a bit more explanatory than the first video.

Hi Jennifer. Sorry to hear about your troubles. Did you disconnect the battery when doing this job? If not, you may have drained your battery too much. Recharge and try again. If the battery is full, did you reconnect all the wires after disassembly?
I have a question I have a Mercedes Benz C230 2006 my car have the same problem with the gear shift with the only difference my was giving the changes when the car was off. So I took it to this near by Mechanic Tire Choice is the name of it. and it’s been 4 weeks and 4 days since the car is in this shop I do t know what to do if I should take this car to a Mercedes specialist that know that someone recommend me. I just bought the replacement part. It should be here this weekend. I’m going to make a video maybe by next weekend on reassembling with the aluminum replacement part. Don’t sell the car. Even if you just remove the broken plastic piece, it’s really easy to do to get you by. Or get it to another mechanic, that should be a 1 hour fix.
hello @ turbo no i didnt disconnect the battery but turned it on several times while working on it and drove it yesterday i ran a test and codes are p0600 and p0705 i believe. what else can I do
P0600 means that the ECU has lost the connection with one of its many controllers more than once. When this code is set the ECU triggers the Check Engine Light to be displayed on the dashboard and a failsafe mode enacted. The failsafe mode is to prevent further damage and protect the vehicle. What the P0705 code means. Diagnostic trouble code P0705 indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) or Transmission Control Module (TCM) has received an input error from the Transmission Range Sensor (TRS). ... The function of the Transmission Range Sensor is to tell the ECM or TCM the position of the shift lever.
So the first one should be reset with a battery disconnect. The second one may as well but maybe a disconnected cable at the shifter. Recheck the wiring.
So then what is the point of that plastic? My cars lock switch also broke but it will only shift into park or drive when I take my foot off the break. But when I try to shift using the shiftronic it doesn’t work
It’s probably jammed in there somewhere. Take it out and safe yourself some future headache. It’s there so that a passenger or a kid couldn’t possible shift the car out of park.

@@Turbo_Snail do I put the car in neutral when it's off and the battery is disconnected in order to push that little pin in to get to the 3rd bolt?? I just wack the shifter with a hammer? Is that necessary to get to the 3rd bolt??
You have to force it open a bit. Get a flathead shrew driver and carefully jamb it in there. Spread it open. When you install it use big pliers to push it back together. It is a pain.
The little metal pin that holds the round “button” in place. Force it out. It will release. Make sure when you pop it back in you bend the metal back in place.

So what exactly was the problem? That black plastic piece? You just removed it? I have a cl55 that just started doing this. I have to really fight it to come out of park.
Yes, they decided to put a cheap plastic piece in there. You either replace it or remove it. If you remove it you can shift out of park without putting the foot on the brake.
does your key turn in the ignition? If not, you have a bad key (maybe just a dead or low battery). Bad key will give no start and no shift. If that's not it, check the fuses. I like to start with the cheapest possibilities.
Yes. There is/was a company in China that replicated that part in aluminum. I left it out. I opted to not replace it but remove it. I have no links to that part unfortunately. Mercedes only sells the whole assembly for a crazy amount.
@@Turbo_Snail You are correct. I have the similar problem on a SL from 2003 (in europe) and the only solution offered by Mercedes was to replace the whole module (1000 euros plus work hours). However, I call the attention of everyone that the replacement parts sold online may not fit your Mercedes. Some sites let you give your particular model and check if it fits your car or not. Yet, most don´t. I have looked into those aluminum replacements but then again I am not sure if it will fit my car. My question to you, Turbo Snail, is if the car taht you fixed is still running without problems with the glued broken part on this video? hank you for your video and help which is has been so helpful for most of us with the same problem.
I can only imagine that the little plastic part broke off and was stuck, preventing you from shifting back to park. After some wiggling you may have dislodged it. If you can shift out of park without the brake pedal than that’s it. If not, I don’t know.
Hey man, does this mean you can now shift it in PRN or D without even pushing the break? Even when your doing 60mph. Since that plastic piece was to prevent it from doing that. Or am I wrong? Thanks.
Yes. I can shift without pushing the brake pedal. It was the cheapest solution for that problem. Mercedes wanted $1200 or $1600 (if I remember right) for the shifter which was way out of budget. So yes you must be aware of that. In most European countries that would not pass inspection either.
Then the shifter is not the problem. As long as the key is in the ignition in ACC, and the pedal is depressed, you should be able to shift. If you can shift without the brake pedal, the safety feature has been already removed.
So I watched that entire video with that dude right there and my car is a c320 2001 Mercedes Benz stuck in park and I could not get the car to start as a matter of fact there was no energy or no electric going to the starter so the starter wasn't even engaging I tried everything in the world and it didn't work from you guys on UA-cam so I decided to pay someone to come out here with a computer and tell me what was wrong and he did start my car it took him 2 and 1/2 hours he didn't take nothing apart he got it started I paid him $200 for his time and $22 for the part. Now if you want to know how to fix your car that's stuck in park and it's not starting hit me up and I'll tell you what to do.
Hey we have the exact 2001 C320. My car is stuck in drive and will not go to park. So I have to use the parking break to get the car to stop and “park” How do I fix this?
I have this same problem. 2004 C240 4Matic. The car starts intermittently. When it does not start, it will not shift out of neutral with switch on. Sometimes I can jiggle the shifter and get it to start. Other times, you just wait and maybe it starts later. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it... What was the deal with yours? Thanks!
I just tried it, but I can't remove it because the console is stuck against the lever (which is in park) and I can't get it out of park with a hammer... Any idea ?
You gotta be able to shift at least into neutral. Plead with it, move the shifter patiently back and forth. Eventually it should release. Make sure your foot is on the brake and the ignition is on. Did you remove the shift knob?
@@Turbo_Snail yeah I removed the shift knob. I used to eventually manage to get it out of park but this time I just losed it and didn't have the patience for that. Also I have wires in the back that I can't unplug...
The broken piece is connected to an actuator. If you release the brake it pushes against a latch that blocks you from shifting from park into any other gear. Now, once you push the pedal it unlocks it and you can shift. When the plastic piece fails it gets stuck in the lock position because the actuator cannot push against it anymore. If you remove it, it’s always unlocked. It can create a safety issue but it’ll fix your problem. Watch my updated video on how I installed a new one.

Turbo Snail cant find that exact beat when i type in Foundation Vibe tracks not making a video just wanna blast the tune when im done fixing this shifter problem n driving it on road agian lol
You gotta have a UA-cam account for creators. Not sure how this worked anymore but once you are in the uploading screen you can go into the creators tab (I don’t know how this works on the new beta, not there yet) and look for “vibe tracks”.
What fuse? There is no fuse in the shifter assembly. There is a little black plastic piece. If it breaks, it’ll jamb up something else when you least expect it. That piece as shown in the video must be removed or replaced.
I have a c240 2001 lately it’s been getting stuck in Drive and neutral and can’t move it up to R or Park, I’m not the best with cars. All I know is that when this happens and I’m driving the car stops really harshly and when I’m driving it makes a really loud noise. I just got the transmission oil changed I thought it would be that but since I’m not great with cars I wouldn’t know haha. Anybody know what could cause this? Thank you.
Hey, sorry to hear about your troubles. It doesn’t sound it’s a shifter issue. At how many miles did you get your trans oil changes? Did you do oil flush? Or filter and oil?
I also have a faulty ABS sensor and the shifter is stuck in park, it's a big mess everytime I want to go somewhere. But I don't know if it really has to do with the ABS problem ?
@@Turbo_Snail I want to give it a go and try to remove it but I'm a bit scared, the transmission link looks very hard to get out and I'm afraid I won't be able to get it back in... 😅
Use some pliers. Just force it out and when you’re done push it back in. It’s not that bad. Unfortunately, I didn’t catch that step in the video, but it’s easier than you think. If you were in my area, I’d help you and reshoot the video.
I have a Mercedes cr230 2005 and I have the same problem obviously if you're mechanically inclined as yourself yes it is a piece of cake but in my case I am not. Now I'm more frustrated I thought it was something simple like a fuse that I can do myself obviously not🙄
Oh, sorry to hear that. I’m not a mechanic by the way but if you go to a trusted mechanic they may be able to do it for you for cheap. Just point it out to them and see what they say. I hope you get it fixed. Cheap!
@@Turbo_Snail thank you so much, so nice of you to reply. Unfortunately, I don't have a reliable mechanic. But as soon as they see Mercedes regardless of the year, they over price everything, even for a diagnostic. I'm searching for an honest mechanic. Thanks again!😊
It’s not just Mercedes. Trust me. Mechanic rates have surged from $60 to about $130 per hour in just the last 5-6 years. At least in my area. And that’s regardless what type of car.
The intention was to install a new one. We never did. We’ve been driving the car without that part. If you are going to actually replace it get the metal part not another plastic one.
@@Turbo_Snail isn't it dangerous to just remove that part ? Since this is the only part that prevents you from shifting gear without pressing the brake pedal.
Yes and no. It’s a safety feature that prevents kids shifting the car without touching the brake. That being said, would you pay $1100 for Mercedes to fix it?
It’s not too bad. If you’re broke, you got no other choice. If you got an extra $1600 laying around, a dealer would be more than happy to do it for you ;)
Brilliant video.
@@Turbo_SnailI will volunteer to meet up and you can make a better video on my 2003 S430 please man I’m begging you.
Yes. Watch the other video as well. I got a lot of flack for just removing it and not reinstalling it properly.
That’s a good tip. In our case. The plastic part was broken in two.
You are absolutely right! I simply put power to the dead battery with a jump box, turned the ignition switch on without actually cranking the car.
Thank you mate
My car is 2004 SL500 and it has only 60k and I’m having problem with removing it from PARK position but today I left the car on for about 10 minutes and suddenly was fine
So the battery could be it.

@@kishorilalkishoreda5719 I think you meant "Brake Switch"?
@@wand3rw0rld yes thank you
But now it’s fixed
That one piece of plastic inside the shifter assembly was broken.
Also, how did you disconnect the shifter mechanism without getting under the car?
Good luck!

Do you have any idea what this could be? I was reading something about a transmission control module letting the starter know it’s in park
Check the linkage from the shifter to the transmission. Maybe it fell apart. The car is probably still in gear and that’s why it won’t let you start.

thank you for your video I managed to unlock the gearbox and remove this plastic element
what do you mean it is dangerous if you remove it I saw in the comments your statement that it is better if it is for example metal fitted
?
I don't mind not having this safety feature in it. Some people think it's dangerous. I for one don't let 3 year olds drive my car so it should be okay. Basically if you remove that, you don't have to step on the brake anymore to shift out of park. Can it be dangerous? Perhaps? But that is up to you to decide whether this is a feature you must have. If you do, follow my link and buy a metal version of that plastic part from Amazon. It's okay enough if you want to put it in.
thank you my friend thanks to you I saved 150 dollars In Poland such a service costs
I will tell you that it is safe without it, because nothing will block you anymore, and with this plastic maybe something can always block you in my opinion it is made so that the car is not stolen it is primarily a protection against car theft,
or maybe it is made of plastic specially so that in case of emergency it can be broken manually because you will not break the metal one maybe that is the whole philosophy,
Thank you again my friend how many people are happy with you how much good you have done for everyone it is a pity that I cannot send you a picture of my S class, because it is really beautiful maybe I will find your email and send it to you
Once again warm greetings Waldek 👋🏾

@@Turbo_Snail It's too risky without that stop check key, you just don't know what a small child is capable of incase they may jump to the front seat while the engine is running!!

I dont think it's related. Did you disconnect the battery before working on the car? Maybe try disconnecting the battery, let it sit for 30-45 minutes, reconnect and see if it recalibrates. Check if your car has a second battery. Make sure both are disconnected.
What color interior is that? Tan or cream? I’ve been thinking about cream colored interior.

Have the issue?
Good morning. Lol I’ve been up all night googling what went wrong with my girls 2006 Mercedes clk350. She was driving to work yesterday, just as she hopped on the freeway, the car stalled out and didn’t want to accelerate. We had to get it towed home. I checked the transmission oil and it’s black. We r the second owners to this car. We got it per-inspected, before purchase, and were told the car was left in a garage for years jus because it needed an oil change. And nothing was wrong with it. So I have 2 questions for you.
One: should I change the transmission oil on the car before trying your method???
Or
Two: Do your method taking out the most likely broken piece of plastic and then change transmission oil???
P.S
Sorry for the long story lmao
Thank you for your time
Sorry to hear about your breakdown.
@@Turbo_Snail I wonder why you would never change out the trans oil once it's over 100k? That makes no sense to me... hmmm I wonder why...?
What tools did you use? I seen an Allen wrench, anything else?
Torx screw driver set. I may have put link in the description. Pretty much everything on the Mercedes’ is torx.

I couldn’t imagine a situation why it would get stuck in neutral as well. The little plastic piece I took out is strictly for the release out of park. That’s all it does. How did you disconnect the shifter
There is a little clamp on the bottom left side. Deep down. Pry it away. It’s usually held in place by a little rubber prong but the car being that old, it’s probably rotten away and should come apart with a little force. Read the comments and description.
Did you reprogram the new shifter?

@@Turbo_Snail If you disconecct the battery aren´t you going to ruin the data in the computer´s car?

Yes that is easy.
I have a 2004 s500 4 matic with 80k miles will i damage it if i change the transmission fluid?

It sounds like it’s the solenoid. Very rare. Keep in mind. My plastic piece was only cracked. I had to dislodge it for it to break apart.
Most Likely Solenoids
@behyndthescenetv nope. Broken plastic piece that the solenoid pushes against.
in the uk mercedes wanted £600 for that park problem I fixt it my self for free thank for your help
Once you see it in person it is hard to fathom why someone can charge so much money for a 50 cent part. Even if it was made of gold it couldn’t cost that much. SMH. I’m glad you got it fixed.
I developed a bad habit of not stepping on the brake anymore when I’m shifting out of park. ;)
Good job, I'll do this to my W22o S350, 2006. Thank you very much!
Watch both videos. I made an update. It may get you better angles. I hope it helped.
Did you replace the broken part or put everything back together without replacing the part
I have 2 videos. The original one that got some outrage because I removed the safety. And then the other one, where I put one back in. Just search the Mercedes playlist. I tried to make it a bit more explanatory than the first video.
I counted 36 different Mercedes with that problem
Wow, unbelievable. It should have been a metal part and not plastic.
@@Turbo_Snail i need help i followed ur video completely everything went well taking apart and putting back but now my speedometerand rpm and my temp gauge dont work but my fuel level and outside temp does did i disconnect something by accident or??? please help my email is jennifertorrence1976@gmail.com asap thanks
Or just sale like it is paid off the car or just this people don’t know how fix the problem! I need help I don’t know what to do if I should towed my car to the specialist or sale it just like it is. do you think this really take that long to fix the Gear Shift?? Your help will be appreciate. Every time I go to check if the car is ready is not ready and it’s been so frustrated I feel like the don’t know how fix the problem.
I just bought the replacement part. It should be here this weekend. I’m going to make a video maybe by next weekend on reassembling with the aluminum replacement part. Don’t sell the car. Even if you just remove the broken plastic piece, it’s really easy to do to get you by. Or get it to another mechanic, that should be a 1 hour fix.
hello @ turbo no i didnt disconnect the battery but turned it on several times while working on it and drove it yesterday i ran a test and codes are p0600 and p0705 i believe. what else can I do
Unplug the battery and let it sit for 20-30 minutes. Maybe the code will reset. I’ll research what those codes are when I get home.
@@Turbo_Snail ok i will disconnect and look at the wiring again thank you so much!
Hello my friend can you show or let me know how do I fix my 2002 CL55 Mercedes car Shifter stuck in park
Watch both videos I’ve done on that. Also read the description.
Hello my friend is me again I would like to know my 2002 CL55 replace the Shifter plastic part the part number is #. Can we replace to Aluminum n can you help to tell us where to order it. Very thankful for your Help.Thankyou.
@jimmyliew9128 I’m not sure where to get the plastic part. You can do the aluminum one from the link in the description. It works fine.
Do I have to put the car in neutral to remove the shifter???
Don’t remember. I think you can probably remove it in park or neutral. You need to move the shifter the remove the panels however.
@@Turbo_Snail do I put the car in neutral when it's off and the battery is disconnected in order to push that little pin in to get to the 3rd bolt?? I just wack the shifter with a hammer? Is that necessary to get to the 3rd bolt??
@candyman6665 I remember having to move the shifter through the gears. It’s been too long.
How did you take off the link that connects to the box ?
You have to force it open a bit. Get a flathead shrew driver and carefully jamb it in there. Spread it open. When you install it use big pliers to push it back together. It is a pain.
The little metal pin that holds the round “button” in place. Force it out. It will release. Make sure when you pop it back in you bend the metal back in place.
Hello Sir. Just last night it happened to me that it got stuck in parking mode and a friend of mine told me to force it somehow or hit the gear lever and it will return to driving mode. ok it worked but when I park it remains stuck as well
Yeah. Sounds like that piece is broken. All gears will work but it’s almost impossible to get it out of park.
2003 sl500 r230 stuck in park. When I took off the letter part off the gear box it’s the same looking shifter on the inside.. plz help. Ty
Just wedge that plastic part out inside the shift box. That’s it. Mine was broken so I completely broke it out.
How did he disconnect from inside the car he skipped that part
Yeah, couldn’t get the camera in there. I wrote it up in the description, trying to explain best I could. Also watch my follow up video.
Man I'm haveing the same problem wit my 2004s430 can u help me
Watch both videos I made. Most people can do it fairly easy. It seems around this time of year I get tons to f views and comments on this.
I'm currently having this problem but how did you get the gear shifter to come out you skipped that part
Watch my updated video. I tried to get some additional info in there.
It would be nice if you explain what you were doing as you were doing it instead of blasting the music
Watch the second follow up video.
thanks I took mine broken plastic bit out no need to replace it it will never get stuck in park againit was easy 6 scews out take out broken pease out your free ive got a SL 350 BIG ENGINE Don't everreplace that part I beg you I'm driving my car out the silly part in it keep that part out I'm very happyI can park my car and it will never get stuck again you done a great Video thanks
I'm glad it worked! This was my first video, sorry for the quality.
Q
Mine is stuck in park but also the car won't start ( no crank ) Its 2001 S600 with only 60.000kms. Any help would be very appreciated. Thank you.
does your key turn in the ignition? If not, you have a bad key (maybe just a dead or low battery). Bad key will give no start and no shift. If that's not it, check the fuses. I like to start with the cheapest possibilities.
You know your s*** you ain't no joke what a good dad people like you that make the world go round
Thank you. It means a lot. I just want to spend more time with my kids.

Thank you for watching!
Are you in the southern California area? I have a w203 c350 and have this same issue, will pay for help! thank you!
Thanks for reaching out. However, I live in central Florida.
That's a pretty dope beat that bumps.
Thank you. Music, because I'm a bad talker.
can you replace the plastic piece you removed?
My S350 4matic w220 stuck in to D-N and 1.hrs. later working! Why? I dont understand... no stuck in park, stuck in D-N and later woking
I can only imagine that the little plastic part broke off and was stuck, preventing you from shifting back to park. After some wiggling you may have dislodged it. If you can shift out of park without the brake pedal than that’s it. If not, I don’t know.
Thank you so much for this nice info that you shared!
Thank you!
I have to same problem. It’s doesn’t work from P to change.
You can force it to get you going once or twice but you gotta fix it. I hope the video helps. Watch both for reference.
@@Turbo_Snail oh i see, thanks allot man!!
you didn't tell or show anything.and the music was bad.real bad.
Ok
I was jamming! And thank you for the help! Video saved!
@glanton9 wonderful. Thank you!
But what if the shifter is moving fine, even when the cats off?
Then the shifter is not the problem. As long as the key is in the ignition in ACC, and the pedal is depressed, you should be able to shift. If you can shift without the brake pedal, the safety feature has been already removed.
No you have a problem well that's easy to fix
You know that there is a difference between a car stuck in park and a car not starting.
Thanks!
What did your mechanic do @davidseawell7106
Wires? It should be a metal clip. Bend it outwards (the u looking part) with some pliers. When it pops back in just bend it back in.
How did you make out? Back together and driving? Or pulling the last hair out?
@@Turbo_Snail Nah I gave up and put everything back together. Right now I just hope that my faulty ABS sensor is the cause of it...
What parts were broken?
The little plastic piece that pushes against a piston when you step on the brake so that it allows you to shift from park.
how come the broken pieces are no longer needed and he threw them out? wth
Wats the name of the song i herd it many times before but never kno the name n imma make sure i played this track when im done n get her driving again lol
It's called "Foundation" by Vibe tracks. I got it from the UA-cam Creator Studio. Click on Create, Audio Library, and type "Vibe Tracks". I use all of the Vibe Tracks Library for these Videos. Keeps a consistent feel and sound. Thanks for watching and happy creating!!!
Turbo Snail cant find that exact beat when i type in Foundation Vibe tracks not making a video just wanna blast the tune when im done fixing this shifter problem n driving it on road agian lol
Turbo Snail n the the 3rd srew from top the a pieace metal blocking it from being unsrew
You gotta have a UA-cam account for creators. Not sure how this worked anymore but once you are in the uploading screen you can go into the creators tab (I don’t know how this works on the new beta, not there yet) and look for “vibe tracks”.
Was the car crank and was stuck in park
Yes the car starts just fine if it’s stuck in park.
why you just didn't pull strong and break the fuse
What fuse? There is no fuse in the shifter assembly. There is a little black plastic piece. If it breaks, it’ll jamb up something else when you least expect it. That piece as shown in the video must be removed or replaced.
How can i buy a metal part
I have seen them on eBay from China. I don’t think Mercedes sells it. As they want to sell you the compete shifter assembly.
Also, from what I e seen it’s almost impossible to put it back in without further disassembly.
@@Turbo_Snail my car is not stuck every time . do you think it is the same problem?
Yes, that’s how it starts. The plastic part is cracked and not completely broken. It’s just a matter of time until it breaks off.

:)
Would this work on a w210?
Yes, I believe it is the same. After 2006 there was a change and doesn’t apply to anymore.
I’m not sure tbh. But I would imagine it to be at least similar if not the same.
Great job 👏
Thank you!
any one have a problem with 99 sl500 shift stuck in park
They have the same issue the w220 people have. I think it’s very similar.
There is a small hole with a small cover on it , bottom of stick Under the D put a
screwdriver in there and it unlocks the stick

Turbo Snail got my trans oil changed at 208k miles, last week.
blaster12v yeah it’s not really drivable now my car doesn’t go past 1st gear whenever it gets stuck the way it does.
The reason why it gets stuck in park because there's something wrong with the car in my case it was a abs
So after you fixed ABS it started working again? That is really strange as it shouldn't have anything to do with it.
I also have a faulty ABS sensor and the shifter is stuck in park, it's a big mess everytime I want to go somewhere. But I don't know if it really has to do with the ABS problem ?
The abs should have nothing to do with the shifter. I bet it’s that little plastic part I took out in the video.

Turbo snail, you found the broken plastic piece that moves the solenoid but you didn't show us a new one!! Those parts r $40.
@@Turbo_Snail sure not ! 😝
Seems complicated 🧐
It’s not too bad. If you’re broke, you got no other choice. If you got an extra $1600 laying around, a dealer would be more than happy to do it for you ;)
