Starting to fit the Solway panels - VB17

- Starting to fit the Solway interior door and wall panels to my van conversion, I'm using these rather than using wood & carpet or tongue and groove, not only to save weight but to get a more polished look & feel for my conversion.

I could never do what you are doing in a million years, but it is fascinating watching this build. It is looking amazing already. I love the way you ‘think aloud’ explaining each stage. Keep up the good work. Loved Mandy’s giggling in the background!
Wow! Coming on in leaps and bounds! 👍🏻
Brill video John .Great job of explaining how you’ve fitted the panels and why .....
I agree some people are very rude . You’ve fairly and squarely explained your point of view.
Hi John I've waited a long time to see you build a camper Van from scratch It just make sense with all the skills you have to build your own. Can't wait for Mandy and you to build hers😁
Coming along nicely now. I have just put 2 new batteries in our caravan as we mainly camp off grid have done for years now. Really like your approach to you builds. Thank you.
love your comments on the comments. When people say you should have done something different to what you've done can be very hurtful. They need to realise you've already built the van in your head. Panels look great by the way
I admire your patience John, reverse psychology, like it.
You carry on doing what you do best.
We love it 👍
"You don't want to do it like that, you want to do it like this..." (It's looking great, John!) Joe. Somerset.
My first though as well
"They sound like Harry!" 😂
Those pre-made panels are an answer to many a prayer, looking good.
Great comments John, I’ve often thought that some of the comments and questions look to be phrased without much thought😤 The build is coming along really well and it’s so refreshing to see a self build that doesn’t finish up looking like the inside of a garden shed! My wife and I have followed you and Mandy for some years and, although there have been occasions when I’ve thought ‘maybe I wouldn’t have done it like that’, your build is exactly that; your build, not mine or anyone else’s! Enjoying every episode👍

You just demonstrated his point *perfectly*
.
Put yourself in the place of a *content provider* ..... As in planning (in this case) a full build", taking the trouble to not only detail the method in the video, but also *list* the costs and source of products, then having the not only lazy, but grumpy viewers complain because they haven't even had the sense (or frankly courtesy) to *read the information*
.
I've been in that situation professionally (as I'm sure has John) where "colleagues" would rely on me to dig them out of trouble without doing the basic faultfinding while complaining when I told them to "RTFM"
(Read the .... Manual!) and follow procedure *which was part of their job* before providing me with a list of results and data that I could use to help by phone *before* attending in person.
It's quite frankly *disrespectful*
.
Part from that, the phrase "don't look a gift horse in the mouth" applies?
.
@@ezioauditore3128 You don’t like it -don’t watch...........Simples😊
Totally agree, if you don’t like it don’t watch. Be nice it’s easy
@@ezioauditore3128 I’ve been watching his videos for a long time and in the last few month he’s been stuck up his own back side maybe he should think about those comments he talked about in his video maybe these people are just starting out or maybe these viewers don’t have the brand spanking new tools given for nothing or the latest gadgets to put in there van can I also point out that after every video he asks for people to like subscribe and comment down below to witch the comments he gets back he doesn’t like well dont say comment then if you don’t like and last thing these viewers are paying your wage John don’t forget that
Still love you John & mandy loving the panels as well beautiful.
A fine film full of finishing and fettling. Coming along nicely with the custom panels fitting nicely. Looks like a good chance of some travel this year. 🙏👍🐝🍕
I like watching your videos John, have done for a long time, I see you as a man who thinks out things carefully before doing them and you know what you are doing.....I would love to build a van of my own but a bit on the older side of life to get stressed out.....so I will just keep watching you and Mandy to pick up some tips......the van build is coming on great though....looking forward to the next ones....
If it helps: I'm just diving into a 7.5t project - with the aim of driving to Nepal - and I'm looking 67 in the face.
@@lucylovitt9583 well done....will be looking out for your posts.....
I so enjoy watching you create this build. When I realise you are wrapping up the video - I always go "awww too soon". maybe I should wait a few weeks so I can watch lots in one go!
I am loving this build John I love ❤️ you and Mandy but I love this Chanel as well thanks John … I am hitting 70 and wish I had done this years ago … go John love ❤️ ye x
Negative... nonsense. I really enjoy your videos, and I'm loving the fact your releasing them so often. Some people are just negative souls. I hope you keep this format and I hope you're enjoying your build :)
Good to see you've got a workshop too, much easier on you.
Circa 42secs onwards…perfectly said John and a lot more diplomatic than I’d be with some of them. 👍🏼
Oh dear better not disagree with you or have any opinions. Like the panels looking nice.
I just love it when you tell everyone off! I don’t usually write any comments, but love all your and Mandy’s videos and am really looking forward to your finished van… as then you might need to make Mandy’s van!
Following with interest. Good to hear Mandy in the background, hope you guys are getting along and getting over your issues
Those panels give a great finish, well worth the money for all the time and effort they will save too. With the price of wood etc at the moment, they are probably very cost effective too. Looks like you've found a great set of products to give a self build a quality finish. Thanks for sharing, and all the tips and hints too
It’s coming on by leaps and bounds. Looking very smart too.
John, been watching your video since before you sold your house, enjoyed your journey through your different vans, own a motorhome myself, not a self build, to sum up your u tube vids are bang on,
Look forward to the next one.
Steve, North Yorkshire
Well said John - two many people with with advice which isn’t required.
Nice job on the panels .
Hello john have started following your fitting dilemma for the hallway panels. I also purchased them and had many issues with fitment. It would have been so much better if slowly had a video for fitment it would save so much time and trouble.
Great job John loving the coverage of the build ☺️
Brilliant John very well said ,great build can't wait to see the next video well done 👍
Hi John, great little set of videos for anyone considering a camper conversion, did not realise you could get these Solway panels, look really a professional finish, i know plenty go the wood cladding route but this looks a great finish. I moderate quite a few FB groups and we often get the same old questions, think people use these as ice breakers as such so you may be getting the same thing here.
I know its not a how to video but we are all learning John. Great watching these videos. This is going to be one great van.
Looking good John
John, that looks so much better than having a load of wood on the inside of the van 👍 👌. Can't understand why people don't understand the meaning of 'fettling'......it's a word that I've used for the majority of my 68 years of life.........I'm a Lancashire lass, so that's probably why 🤣
John I watch your van build because I like to see your new van evolving. I have no intention or skill to build my own. So I dont comment much cos I would be talking out of my exit. But I fully appreciate what you are saying
No way are you negative, from what I can see you are doing it it your way but at the same time listening to helpful advice but still doing it your way, keep it it up.
The van is looking amazing John. I also loved how you got your point across well said 😊
Fair comments John, now if it was me, I would be reacting in exactly the same way 😂
I appreciate seeing how you are building your van and your real life experience of living with your builds.
Looking very smart 😎🌞
Never done a van build bought motorhome instead but really liking the panels vs wood or carpet John.
Following with great interest, thank you. 👍🏻
Hi John. Loving the build so far. Keep up the great work. Starting to come together quickly
Looking really professionally finished - amazing the transformation with the panels on - bet you’re pleased with the result (certainly from what you’ve shown already) - all the best, David 👍
Well said John 👍
Great video John as always. Ignore the silly comments. Always look forward to the content you put on here and John and Mandy channel.
Just woke up in Belize high in the hills with the British army to another of ur vids
Missing my van thats sitting at home doing nothing ,but
Defo stealing this travel wifi antenna they have lol ,miles Away from anywhere and strong signal
Hi John really enjoyed watching your van build really great job so far really looking forward to seeing your next video keep safe 😷👍🏻
Well said tonto , I don’t agree all the time, but guess what it’s not my van, good on you for doing it the way you want
Great job John such a change from wood panels 😁
(LTT says hi😉)
Fab job these videos are coming at a perfect time I have been so inspired by both you and Mandy me and the wife have bought the exact same van and hope to pick it up this week so we can get building ready for the spring.
Good call John 🙂
adressing negativity in comments. Comments can be read in more than one way. Its the worst form of communication because you dont get to see the face of the person. Suggestions are fine-instructions that are abrupt are not. Theres a reason why I always end my comments with the words "repect and regards" and thats because thats how I treat and regard peeps.sadly not everyone is the same and as I found out on facebook when fellow youtubers posted a photo of the progress of their build on a certain van build page, the comments from the "trolls" and keyboard "experts" were disrespectful and disgusting. Respect costs nothing 😊 I said on the previous video how I loved those bespoke panels from Solway- how flippin fantastic do they look! proper professional finish indeed ! I particularly love the panel on the sliding door. I wish Id had one when I did viv-i-van.would have made the door much easier. Loved the video. Loved you and Mandy collaborating on the new build with big beaming smiles which were good to see. The panels look awesome. Respect and regards- Kenny
Thanks for your videos and love the points you made at the start of this one.
Hi John looking good 👍
Great vlog 👍
Love the van build and the solway panels think it finishes everything off just nice keep up the good work John & Mandy.
Hi Jon, I’ve been watching your videos you’re doing great good and you’ve got some very informative videos, just one thing about the side loading panel fitting you mentioned at about 7 minutes that you had to do a bit of fettling on the side door panel to make it fit, the panel is designed to go behind the handle so what he have to do is remove the snide handle pop the cables off and put them through the hole in the panel, then connect them back to the handle then screw the handle back on over the panel, no fettling required 😂, just a little tip for any else fitting the side panel👍
Ah, I did try that but my handle didn’t fit flush inside the cut out. I’m happy with the end result though 👍🏻
Soo keen for the Eco Flow installation...can't wait ha ha love ❤️ your Vlogs.
Hi John, Nice bit of fettling around the sliding door handle, has come out very well. great job. I love my solway panels now fitted, ok yes a bit grumpy at the time of fitting but found 'my' way to overcome my fitment issues just as you have and found 'your' way, just as it should be! Really looking forward to your method to overcome the 'gap' issue on the driver front panel and the window? enjoying the follow along. cheers.
Manners maketh man 👍. I’m really enjoying watching the build John. I’m looking forward to seeing how it turns out, then of course looking forward to Mandy’s new build 😉
Looking good, those panels are the way to go, looks factory made 👌
No you are not negative , I find it very interesting to see what gear, materials and electrical sytem you are using nowadays, with all your experience of living and traveling in vans also knowing what works and what doesn't works, I was a carpenter for 40 years, a farmer with a small holding was telling me how to make some stairs the other day, I said to him, I won't tell you how to milk a cow if you don't try and tell me how to make these stairs, now fk off, John the world is full of them, great videos.
Well said John. We're loving the van build and your channels 😎👍
Looking good 👍👍
I am following your build with great interest , you are being very pragmatic , so many self builders over complicate their builds , how many are going to the south and North Pole plus a drive around the equator , all they do is add massive weight with very little benefit , I think you have taken note of the builds from past vans which have had R&D from commercial manufacturing , really enjoying your work .
As John said, it is (or should be) horses for courses and each to their own, while respecting others choices.
@@rogerstarkey5390 I really don’t care what other people do, that’s up to them , you missed my point , John is carrying out a very practical build using his experiences .
Love it John and it’s coming on, thanks for being informative too.
Very interesting blog today ,loving the panels I'm looking forward to more
It's looking great, nice to see the build progressing. The panels are a real winner and as you say good for weight saving and future upgrades. Take care.
John, get you completely on your comments. Mate, your vids are inspirational…… just carry on. 👍
Great video young John & an amazing build, nice to see someone doing a proper job, like yourself I’m looking forward to the EcoFlow system going in. 👍🏻
Hi John, those panels are a great idea and look like OEM ones would be . Didn’t think there was a company in the Uk making these . It’s going to make your conversation so neat 😊
It's really interesting watching the van come together, you're doing a lot of the things I've said I would do on any future build I might do. Having messed about with carpet and cladding in the past I really like the idea of the Solway panels, looks like a tidy finish. Interested to see how you get on fitting the furniture up to them 👍🏻
Nothing like a good bit of fettling...😂
The Solway panels are looking an inspired choice - both light in colour and should be easy to keep clean.
Looking great John, far better than the one I did a couple of years ago with tongue and groove cladding. I cant wait to see what you do for the cabinets. I went the other way to you, had an A class, then a vanbuild now a coachbuilt!
Nice work going on there John 👍 The Solway panels appear to be a game changer. If they made them for the Mercedes Sprinter I would have gone for them. Keep at it John, I can see a really cool van coming together 👍
Those panels are a fantastic idea !
Love the video and the comments at the start, did make me giggle.
Great Video ❤ And glad to see the Multitool! 😍
looking grt john
Your van your build your way 👍
I can’t believe how negative you were in the intro. Go back and do it again! 😜
On a serious note, those panels are amazing. So much quicker, easier, lighter than any custom option.
(maybe a "s/" is in order?)
As a researcher on Vlogs I notice people are just being interactive on comments . Yes, there are those who are opinionated and probably don’t realise they think they know best . All the same , positive or negative gives a true reflection on your methods whether they’re right or wrong , I’m finding your conversion very interesting .
Get a real job, vlog researcher 😂😂
@@ezioauditore3128
And you're certainly "taking the opportunity to comment"?
@@ezioauditore3128
The phrase "hypocritical" springs to mind?
Hi John I’m going to Buy a new van and convert to camper as a new camper is about £80.000 so a new van is £30.000 plus conversion kit, I’m selling my Kontiki sport as it’s too long for me , I look at UA-cam and it’s very informative, so thank you so much for your channel ❤️
Looking great - impressed with these panels!!
looking very high end john, those panels really finish the van off
Nothing negative about you pal. Don't let others grind you down mate, your ok as you are.
Really like the look of those panels, something different from the normal self built van, which is normally all wood
Hi John the van is looking fantastic. Well done can’t wait for the next vlog Steve b U.K. 👍
Fair point well made. Keep up the great videos.
looks a bit like a commercial airplane, which is no bad thing.
Completely agree with your comments John, I for one am really enjoying your “this is what I have done” videos, every one has a different way of doing things, I have learned a lot from your videos which has helped my build no end.....well done and thank you.
Very nice those panels! Wish I had that when I did my build, I’m so over cladding and figure sawing…. 👍
Well said John. I am with you all the way. You certainly know how to put the negatives in their place (in the skip) Thank you for your very positive content it's very helpful to so many people.
Wow! Those panels look fantastic John ❤
Great progress John. Enjoying the channel 👏
Must be a really enjoyable project to do? I'm enjoying watching! 👌👍
I love watching this you and Greg great fun as I'm a Baker

Absolutely love the look of them panels Jon, Great job and a great help thanks 👍👍🚙🚙
Really enjoying the build, love the step by step vlogs. 👋
Agree with everything you said and loving the build.
Brilliant Vid John 👍🏻 Van build is looking amazing 😁. Those panels are really cool. Cant wait to see the next steps 😁👍🏻
Totally agree with everything you spoke about
Great to see progress, forget what the negative Nancy keyboard worriers may say, you have no need to justify why you do what you do. You are both the most positive people that happily share your lives with us, so I really appreciate, what you share, a BIG thank you and Mandy, from your Aussie followers.
