Great combo of By-Tor and Fly By Night. BUT, I'm still waiting for "Working Man - Live in Cleveland". You two will be shaking your heads when it's over......amazing.
Hi guys! I may have mentioned this before but the live version of BT&TSD is amazing! Check out the version on their 1976 live album! It will crush you! 😀
I scrolled through the comments and I dont think anyone has mentioned this....This song was written about 2 dogs, a German Shepard and a small white dog that belonged to their manager, Howard Ungerleider. The shepard would always bight people- they called him "By-Tor" for a nickname. Since the other dog was white, they called him Snowdog. And of course Peart put his sci-fi,-spiritual,-epic story telling touch into it, and it became what it is. True story.
It is so cool that you guys are reacting to By-Tor...and I love Fly by Night too. I definitely do recommend that you two listen to the live version of By-Tor...in particular the version from All the World's a Stage, Rush's first double live album. The extended jam on that version of By-Tor will 100% guaranteed blow your minds. Personally, I think that side 3 of ATWAS is the best live album side Rush ever recorded, and may be one of the most amazing live album segments ever etched into a vinyl surface. With By-Tor followed by In the End, the music on that album side is just incomparable. ✌💯😎
All the Worlds was my first Rush album in 1976 It took me awhile to get use to the studio version of all the songs on that album. I can still remember staring at the pictures on the album cover with the headphones on Rush fan till i die
Same experience with Yessongs starting the Yes journey ... the studio versions sounded ... different .... which is good ... but it should be the other way around ... first studion - then live
Wow! A great surprise!!! There's no need to apologize, there has been so much music released and out there to be discovered. Music discovery is one of the best things in life.
By-Tor is one of their early masterpieces. It was always a show-stopping heavy jam when they did it live. It's amazing to think Alex and Geddy were only 21, and Neil only 22, when they recorded this. It's SO creative and progressive. Now you should do the "sequel" to By-Tor, which is "The Necromancer" off of Caress of Steel. :)
LOL that was me that made the comment about 2 months. Don't get me wrong I love all your other videos and I'm definitely a Steely Dan fan but my boys Rush you can't ignore them! And you came back with a hell of a bang! By-Tor & the Snowdog!!!! EXCELLENCE CHOICE! Can I make a special request? Headlong flight! Please? Thank you! Rush on brothers and sisters!
Thanks 1 million guys for going back down in the Rush rabbit hole! It would be really cool if you guys would mention me in your next rush video! The Rush army loves you guys, And I’ve been a sub since day one. You 2 are the best reaction channel on the entire inter web!! 🤣❤️🙏
Hey Nick N Lex. Thank you, thank you, thank you so, so much for reacting to By - Tor and the Snow Dog, it's one of my favorite Rush songs. I hope you listen to the version they do on the album All The World's A Stage. Excellent, excellent reaction. Keep up the good work.
Great reaction guys. I think it might be time for some Cygnus X-1 book I: The Voyage (Length 10:25), and then book II: Hemispheres (Length 18:08). The Voyage is the last piece off their album 'A Farewell to Kings' and Hemispheres is the first piece off their next album, 'Hemispheres'. You're gonna love them.
Nice to see you back doing Rush! Does seem like a long time since the last one! I for sure know fly by night. Heard that one many times. I had not heard bytor. What a great track with so many different parts! These guys where so ahead of their time! I have a lot of respect for them! Amazing stuff! Had fun experiencing this with you guys! Thanks again for being yourselves! And thanks for bringing us these great reactions and incredible music! Appreciate it! Much love!
At some point you should watch the live version of this song. I recommend this version, as it has a hilarious performance of "La Villa Strangiato." YT Video Title: R30 - Rush 30th Anniversary Tour - La Villa Strangiato/By-Tor and the Snow-Dog
Thank you !!!!! We've arrived, Finally lol ❤ I appreciate your RUSH reactions, I was patiently waiting to see you react to Bytor, even in 1975, with the addition of Neil, their ability to musically arrange became evident immediately, the moon and stars were in line for these three gentlemen when Neil auditioned, WE ARE so thankful for that! This whole album is a classic, wait until you finally react to IN THE END, one of they're most popular songs live back then, with Geddys lyrics, Alex's guitar is definitely featured on this tune, enjoy!
You don't know HOW MANY times I request this song but no one wants to react to it. FINALLY!! Thank you for reacting to this epic tune. By the way Dream Theater does an amazing cover of Rush's Xanadu.
Love that you have come back to Rush! Check out the live version of Bytor and the Snow Dog from their R30 tour. Alex is the Snow Dog and Geddy is Bytor. They are having a "battle" on stage. It is pretty funny. Alex as usual is hilarious. Fly by Night is their 2nd album and it is a transitional one. Fly by Night is more the basic rock song whereas Bytor and the Snow Dog is more Prog and the direction they were heading. I don't know if you noticed but when you did Battlescar Kim Mitchell from Max Webster replied to you. Love the Marathon idea. I am not sure if you have done any of the Clockwork Angels album. I don't believe so. Caravan from the Time Machine Tour live in Cleveland is a banger and is from that album.
Now we are talking. My first introduction to this song was in 1977 when I saw Rush live with UFO. I was 10 feet from Alex which was surreal now that I think about it.
I've seen them 3 times (yes 3 lol) and every concert was amazing and I loved every minute of it. I still have several of the concert t-shirts from those and wear them. I'm still heartbroken we lost Neil because there will never be anything like Rush again they were unique.
Don’t fight, Doggies, I love you both! I think of it as an instrument fight. Marley walked out in case he had to grab a guitar 🎸 to battle. Lol. Great marathon. Thanks ✨🤪
The chimes at the end (on some turntables) looped continuously. Do we have enough of those percussion touches in music today? Fly By Night did well as a single in Canada and the US. Great reaction mid-week! Lovin it! ✨🤪
I've listened to "By-Tor and the Snow Dog" by Rush countless times, and every time I hear Alex Lifeson's soul-stirring solo, it sends shivers down my spine. His remarkable ability to infuse his playing with profound emotion and soul places him among the greatest guitarists of all time. Not only is he incredibly talented, but he's also a genuinely cool and kind-hearted individual. Each member of Rush is truly extraordinary.
I Am 6 years old growing up in Cleveland. One band from up north became everything. We had a local superstar then in Michael Stanley although I was just a kid growing up then looking back in perspective now. Fly By Night album was listened in my house on a bona fide old school turntable on a motorola cabinet.
LOL...that sounds amazing...By-Tor to zone out to for starting and the hard work, and then In the End as an uplifting reward for the home stretch and end of the job. 😁💯✌
I love your Rush reactions! And this is going back when I started listening to Rush. My favorite Rush albums are mostly from the 70’s. And Fly By Night is one of their best. In The End is another great song from that album.
OH YEAH LEX, THE GOOSEBUMPS SHALL COME WITH ( THE NECROMANCER ) SO DON'T YOU WORRY GIRL! :) I LUVVVVVVVVV CHILLS AND GOOSEBUMPS, BEEN GETTING THEM DAILY FOR 45 YEARS PLUS NOW :) YOU KNOW WITH JONIIIIIIIII
This is Rush's 2nd album, their 1st with Neil. 🤯 How blown away must you be that they were already this...d**n...good! This is why Rush fans (maybe rightfully so) believe Rush to be the greatest rock band ever 🤪😄 I noticed though that, as much as I'm happy for your return to Rush, there wasn't a single album cover on display behind you guys...and no shirts. What gives? 😆 Still love you guys, thank you 😊
If you notice in other videos (seems here the camera is more toward the right), on their Left is a coffee-table book about Rush and a "Rush Signals Pin" from the concert that was given to them by their friend Gene Roberts ;).
Hi - Just brilliant and you were right to play these studio versions first.....but now you really must listen to By-Tor and the Snow Dog live ; "All The Worlds a Stage".....It is incredible and is what people call - their Led Zeppelin Dazed & Confused moment. You will totally understand when you hear it. Incidentally their debut album is definitely more of the Led Zeppelin sound, and is before Rush found their own sound........From that album I absolutely love the track "Here Again". Great reactions and so glad you finally got to hear By-Tor.
I appreciate your review and comments. Bytor is one of my favorite RUSH tunes. After you know the story the visuals build each time you listen to it. This is the first album released after Neil joined the band. Love the heavy drums. My favorite Bytor is the one on "All the World's a Stage", it is 12 minutes. Drums kill on that whole album.
Fly by Night was Rush's 2nd album, 1st with Peart . May have said before, try Crack The Sky album Safety in Numbers, whole album is great particularly Nuclear Apathy.
Hey guys great to have you back in the rush family love the way you appreciate everyone’s contribution to the songs for a great bass line listen to marathon off of power windows you’ll love it also roll the bones off of roll the bones you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Cheers 😊🥁🎸🇨🇦
Great reaction to RUSH masterpiece! May I suggest, "Kid Gloves", as your next RUSH reaction. It's a real banger from the Grace Under Pressure album from 1984.☮☮☮
@@Dave-in-TN The ending is amazing. Actually, it's not really amazing if you're Rush. We came to expect greatness on a regular basis and boy oh boy, did we get it!
Since you guys like steely dan so much you might like 80s rush. I dont want to imply that 80s rush sounds like the dan, but they did mature as song writers by then, and included more layered sounds and better production. A lot of rush fans are attached to their 70s guitar driven prog stuff but i love their 80s gems just as much. Songs like New World Man, Distant Early Warning, Marathon, Mission, Mystic Rhythms, Dreamline, subdivisions, Red Sector A. So much good stuff
I would add another vote for Red Sector A. It is an important song about how humans treat other humans. It is inspired by Geddy's parent's experiences in prison camps during the Holocaust. Lyrics like "For my father and my brother it's too late, but I must help my mother stand up straight" hit pretty hard.
I couldn't agree more, Dan. My favorite Rush era is from _Signals_ to _Hold Your Fire._ They became a lot more accomplished as songwriters and the keyboards gave them a full wall of sound. Geddy was immensely talented to be able to sing, play outstanding bass and synths (sometimes all at once!).
So good to see you doing another Rush reaction. Like others have said the By-Tor & Snow Dog live version from All the World's A Stage is just awesome The All the World's A Stage tour was my first Rush concert. Getting to hear this song & 2112 live was just mind blowing. Had to go find a place to sit down after their set. Fly By Night was the first song to get regular air play when I was in high school. Enjoyed your reaction once again 👍
I almost thought when you stopped, you thought Bytor was over. The song evolved during the subsequent tours. It got even tighter. The best change was during the slow part was Neil following Alex with marching drums during that sequence. Do yourself a favor and listen to Bytor on all The World's A Stage 1976. My favorite version.
The best song on this album is Anthem. THAT is the song that opened Alex's and Geddy's eyes to Neil's prowess. Neil really GROOVES on this album. Beautiful fills and rolls. Alex was 20 when they wrote this. At 20, I was running around my dorm halls, drunk and in my underwear!
It was great to get another taste of Rush from you two. This was another chance to appreciate how much I miss Neil Peart. You both really do a great job of blending all types of music on your channel. I've discovered so many new groups from your reactions and you really do have something for everyone here, What is next?
Hey guys, Absolutely love your reactions. Rush especially since I grew up during this time. If uou see this I would love to see you react to Loosing It from the Signals record. This song is unique as are most other songs. Thank you so much for the respect and appreciation you have for Rush. Blessings Randy
Early Rush is what i grew up on .I dont listen to much after Moving Pic album the 80s synthesizer sound came to prevalent in there sound. Not that they did not right great music Try The Fountain of Lamneth long song but epic
Fly by Night was the song that, when I heard it on the radio in 1975, made me go & buy the album, the first album I ever bought with my own money. I listened to it cranked, with headphones on so many times growing up. By Tor is one of my all time favourites.
What a great pair of songs. You're absolutely right, they never disappoint. I was going to ask you guys to react to some King Crimson, but I see from the album cover in the background, you're already familiar with their music.
Hey DM! I sent them that KC and they listened to the entire “In the Court of the Crimson King” album on their new Patreon channel because King Crimson is notorious for getting blocked here on UA-cam. Thanks for noticing. ✨🤪
I’ll never forget the one and only time I saw Rush during the Vapor Trails tour back in 2002, when they suddenly launched in this song. Never in my life did I expect them to do this one. One of the biggest surprises I’ve ever had at a concert!
No other artists are as expressive as Rush, each a Master... I honestly can't find the words to explain it in depth, you just don't hear it but you can feel it... they take you places you can't imagine 🤯
With By-Tor, I think your channel has covered nearly all the songs from "Exit Stage Left" (their second live album) by now and just a legendary performance. Would definitely make for a fun watch now that you know the tunes!
Fly by Night brought a lot of fans to Rush. It was very radio friendly and the boys got to show some of their talents... They were not really doing too well financially at this point but they gave it one last shot... and what a shot... 2112 And the rest is history. In the End from this album is the other "necessary" tune.
Ummmm.... no they did caress of steel after FBN then 2112. Caress of Steel was the "down the tubes tour" as the band labeled it..... that was when they were hurtin.
I appreciate that you do a variety of music and it is certainly hard to please everyone all the time. As a life long fan of Rush I especially geek out whenever you do a reaction to their music, This just made my week ! Their are 2 other songs of this ilk and era that are similar to By-Tor that are worth reacting to in the future, The Necromancer and The Fountain of lamenth. Happiest of holidays to you and your families and thanks for all you do.
Caress of Steel is such a Great album to listen to start to finish. It's so cool to hear them finding their way to the musical trip they take us on, every album is a treasure.
Where do we go from here, you asked? Consider taking a step into later 80's Rush like - "Between the Wheels" from P/G or "Test For Echo" from Presto. Each, I feel, has great lyrics and are hard rockers. Best wishes to you both!
The song is about the producer's two dogs: a German Shepherd nicknamed By-tor (biter) and a poodle nicknamed Snowdog - the song is about the two dogs playing in the snow. You can hear a representation of the Shepherd growling and the poodle yipping - it is hilarious.
I’m totally on board for the idea of more marathons! That might save you some editing time as well since you can put out less videos to cover the same amount of music. Anyway, take your time! If you guys are too tired some days after work don’t worry, I think most of us here will be patiently waiting and will be excited whenever a new video comes out. As for what to check out next from Rush, I think you should do another epic. My choice would be either The Necromancer or go for the deep dive and cover both parts of Cygnus X-1 (it was split across 2 albums). That being said, I’ll be stoked for any more Rush or almost anything else for that matter; I’m just a fan of music in general. Thanks for the great video as always, take care! 🤘🤘
Welcome to the first of many Rush story telling epics. I love By -Tor. Neil’s drum work again is unprecedented. So some people are a little miffed with the first section where Geddy and Alex pair up and you get a lot of growling. However you must remember according to their story, Alex (Snowdog) and Geddy (By-Tor) are sparring. Don’t know if you did “The Necromancer”, but that is the sequel to this in the the next album where By-Tor is the hero and shows his quality. (Btw - If you look at the BY-TOR rendition from “Exit Stage Left” video they actually poke at each other during that segment like that have swords. Entertaining
I just saw one comment saying that this was their least favorite track because of "a lot of screaming and growling" . . . . I'm thinking; This isn't a Djent band or Death Metal song :P The "Growling" is just a sound effect folks of the "battle"😄.
I enjoy your RUSH reactions. I picked up their debut self-titled album a month after US release in March,1974.. I was 13. 48 years later I am still their biggest, most die hard fan. I first saw them live in January,1977 front row center stage. There were no buffer zones back then. You were pressed right against the stage. I suggest you focus on their albums from 74-78 to get a REAL feel of how incredible this band is/was.
ByTor and Snowdog were two dogs owned by Rush's manager. ByTor was a German Shephard, and Snowdog was a small white dog, and they would wrestle in the studio which gave Rush the idea for the battle.
You can hear the Led Zep influence in the early Rush as they were developing their writing skills , Also Kieth Moon and John Bonham were huge influences on Neil Peart
It always makes me grin (and scratch my head a little) knowing that Neil was such a huge fan of Keith Moon - their styles could not be more different. Keith was the epitome of chaos and Neil was Mr. precision. Could never imagine Neil trashing his kit the way Keith did during early Who gigs.
And there are a few other really great tracks including Anthem, Making Memories and In The End. With the exception of Making Memories all of these appear on Rush’s first live album All The Worlds A Stage. Each song is presented even heavier and more rocking than their studio versions. I highly suggest you have a listen, even if just on your own. You’ll want to come back and comment anyway.
👍. The first album I ever bought as a kid (from “Columbia House”). Had to wait for my parents to leave the house to play it though. Ps, Round Two: Sidecar Dog vs Snowdog for the championship.
Catching up to you guys, I'm usually a month behind just because I'm only online for a short time. Love seeing your reactions, especially to Rush, reminds me of my first time hearing them. I started with Moving Pictures and was hooked ever since. I know you've mentioned it but you guys should really try a reaction to a live song. Rush and Dream Theater are as good if not better on stage. Keep up the good work, you make music fresh again :-)
They were just kids man. My favorite Rush album...behind Caress of Steel... 2112...A Farewell to Kings...Moving Pictures...Hemispheres...and on and on and ... which ever one I'm listening too is my favorite album
Hi Nick , Hi Lexi. Thank you so much for revisiting Rush ...and reacting to the brilliant track By Tor and the Snow Dog and Fly by Night. Also Anthem is on this album. You are right this is the second album and the first with Neil. The drummer on the first album is John Rutsey. I am guy who grew up with Purple, Yes , Zeppelin, ELP, Gentle Giant, PFM, etc in my teens. When Rush came out they were the next big band ...when I first heard Fly By Night ...you could tell the difference between the first two albums, and I knew Rush had arrived 👍. By the way I can understand why you like Steely Dan so much...so do I 👍😆 Thank you so much for your channel and your reactions. You both always brighten up my day. I always love young people like yourselves discovering bands that I grew up with and love. I'm a old metal head now alongside the old stuff ... ranging from Metallica , Megadeth, Opeth, Dream Theater , Nightwish, Alice in Chains. Looking forward to your next reaction. Take care, stay safe and don't work too hard. Love and peace from Liverpool UK 👍✌️🤘☮️
From a hard core Rush fan - Steely Dan was one of the most amazing projects in modern music. I love that you discovered them, too! Their catalog isn’t as deep as Rush’s, but DAMN there are some really excellent and solid SD songs in your future! Cheers!✌🏻
Bought this Record 1975 when I was 15. Been Hooked ever since. They were big in Cleveland
Great combo of By-Tor and Fly By Night. BUT, I'm still waiting for "Working Man - Live in Cleveland".
You two will be shaking your heads when it's over......amazing.
Yeah!! Working Man - Live in Cleveland
Yup👍
You will be blown away by their fantastic performance and spectacular musicianship.
I agree!
Yup as well
Hi guys! I may have mentioned this before but the live version of BT&TSD is amazing! Check out the version on their 1976 live album! It will crush you! 😀
I also strongly agree with you! A killer high quality live recording superior to the studio version… all the songs!!
During By-tor, the battle, the bass Geddy is By-tor and the guitar Alex is Snowdog. Liner notes are important where Rush is concerned

Wow! A great surprise!!! There's no need to apologize, there has been so much music released and out there to be discovered. Music discovery is one of the best things in life.
Alex does such a memorable, melodic pop rock solo in Fly By Night. Underrated. It's what makes him so awesome.

Fly by night used to be a HUGE radio hit on Montreal's CHOM-FM. Stayed on the playlist for a long while.

I always thought of Fly By Night as The perfect gateway for casual pop-rock radio listeners to walk through looking further into the Rush catalogue.
To me RUSH and Led Zeppelin are the SOUNDTRACK TO EPICS LIKE GAME OF THRONES AND LORD OF THE RINGS!
Please check out The Necromancer, it’s the follow up to By-Tor.👍🎧🔥🤘🏻

By-Tor and The Snowdog and In The End are my 2 favorites from this album Fly by Night was the redio hit
I saw this and thought it was going to be a reaction to "Marathon", by Rush.
Great Album for teenagers !!!!!!!!!!!
Next to Steely Dan, my favorite band.
Fly By Night was in a VW commercial. It is great because the guy is air drumming, like we all do!
It's a real banger from the Grace Under Pressure album from 1984.☮☮☮
Yes! Kid Gloves is an awesome recommendation! Love the song and the album!
Kid Gloves!!! Great choice, my favorite of theirs from the many on P/G, PWs, HYF, Presto, RTBs era.
@@Dave-in-TN The ending is amazing. Actually, it's not really amazing if you're Rush. We came to expect greatness on a regular basis and boy oh boy, did we get it!
Being a bass player and a Loooong time RUSH fan this song blew my mind the first time I heard it.
Bye-Tor redeems himself on the next album. The song The Necromancer.
Counterparts. Being children of the 90s, I think they would love that album. Nine of the 11 songs are SMOKERS.
@@TheReaperMan275 That is my least favourite era. There is only one song that I actually like on Power Windows.
@@debbieplato5107 Well, to each their own. I can respect that.
This is Neil Peart's first Rush studio album. The previous self-titled album had founding member John Rutsey on drums and backing vocals.
Disfruto verlos reaccionar al rock de mi país Argentina y comparto el fanatismo por Rush ,un abrazo desde Buenos Aires
Hey guys,
Absolutely love your reactions. Rush especially since I grew up during this time. If uou see this I would love to see you react to Loosing It from the Signals record. This song is unique as are most other songs. Thank you so much for the respect and appreciation you have for Rush. Blessings
Randy
@@michelemichele3375 that album is definitely in my top 5.
I’ll never forget the one and only time I saw Rush during the Vapor Trails tour back in 2002, when they suddenly launched in this song. Never in my life did I expect them to do this one. One of the biggest surprises I’ve ever had at a concert!
Ron Jarzombek plays in a Rush tribute band in San Antonio called Exit Stage Left. They are GREAT! Fly by Night is by far my favorite Rush record
Love seeing youngsters rock out to our music. Just goes to show music is immortal.
This is a different beast than Nothing but Blues and Elvis and somebody else's favorite song
You've GOT to check out these songs on their first live album "All The World's A Stage!"
Fly by Night brought a lot of fans to Rush. It was very radio friendly and the boys got to show some of their talents... They were not really doing too well financially at this point but they gave it one last shot...
and what a shot... 2112
And the rest is history.
Thank you Greg! Wishing you and yours a happy holiday as well! ❤️ Lex
Caress of Steel is such a Great album to listen to start to finish. It's so cool to hear them finding their way to the musical trip they take us on, every album is a treasure.
The song Fly By Night was so catchy it even made its way into a Volkswagen commercial a few years ago.
Live version of by tor and the snow dog on Rush's All the World's a Stage album blows this version away. You should check it out!
Yes yes yes! You've beaten me to it. The live version is just incredible. Lifeson takes us to magical faraway places with just one guitar...
Excellent choice to jump back into Rush. Thank you, Nick N Lex!
Where do we go from here, you asked? Consider taking a step into later 80's Rush like - "Between the Wheels" from P/G or "Test For Echo" from Presto. Each, I feel, has great lyrics and are hard rockers. Best wishes to you both!
you know how that rabbit feels, going under your speeding wheel :-) well, I once had the experience ... wasn't a nice one ..
By-Tor, freakin' good song often forgotten. Looove his voice back then.
The guitar swells that sound like an organ in the final section are just awesome, and it builds into a great solo
@@mvunit3 lol
Wahoo, Rush is back......Great Reaction, thanks guys. Time to do a full album......just saying. Try Witch Hunt, Cygnus X-1 or Roll the Bones.
EXCELLENT!!!
Thank goodness you’re back to RUSH.
“that was famazing “ great choice of words. that’s what RUSH does to you.
Thanks for coming back to Rush!
Welcome back to Rush. Between the wheels you will love it
And there are a few other really great tracks including Anthem, Making Memories and In The End.
By the way I can understand why you like Steely Dan so much...so do I 👍😆
Thank you so much for your channel and your reactions.
This is going to be off the chain great. You selected a great piece. I love it. Outstanding.
From a hard core Rush fan - Steely Dan was one of the most amazing projects in modern music. I love that you discovered them, too! Their catalog isn’t as deep as Rush’s, but DAMN there are some really excellent and solid SD songs in your future! Cheers!✌🏻
Nice to see you guys. Always loving the Rush reactions...
If you loved By-Tor and the Snowdog you need to listen to The Necromancer on Caress of Steel. It is a sequel to By-tor...
