ByTor n The Snowdog is so amazing! Definitely these guys were at the top of their game those yrs. Even many years after they created so much more amazing music n massive more hits! ❤ 🎉
what is amazing is when most of those top guitarists of all time Alex is either left off the list or not in the top 20 yet Neil is at the top of every list for drummers and Geddy at or near the top for Bass players did they not listen to Alex ?
Alex is CRIMINALLY underrated. Any other guitarist would probably be swallowed up within Neil and Geddy's musicianship. But he more than holds his own within the Triad. Three brilliant artists in perfect symmetry.
Enjoyed your perspective on my Favorite Band. I’ve been a fan since the white album. Long Live Rush. You have to do Natural Science off of Permanent Waves. God bless and Rush on.
Btw, when it may not seem like Alex is doing as much like in the ambient section, what he's doing though is quite and just beautifully expressive, he is so good at those volume swells on the electric guitar. I think it's the first of the two main guitar solos in La Villa Strangiato that also starts off with the volume swells. He really is a master at it.
Alex doing soundscapes in the middle of this also reminds me of something like Ash Ra Tempel. Very krautrockish. I suppose, this kinda informed the intro of Xanadu. Too bad, he never got the chance to do this more often.
The REAL COOLEST thing about this version is that it was so ahead of their technology laden days and ALL THAT SOUND and effects were 95% THEM and their playing ability. I’ll give 5% to the amplification and couple of pedals Alex had back then but no stacks of keyboards, computers, midi, samples and mixing machines for adding special effects and such. Truly remarkable stuff.🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎤🎸🥇🇨🇦🎼
They’ve always put on outstanding live performances . Their showmanship matched their musical prowess! The crowd was so into it, and the closest thing to an asshole was some happy drunk dude screaming out the name of his favourite song. 😂
First Rush I ever heard my buddy Dave Ludwig said to me one morning at the bus stop, I've got to play you something after school. One listen and I was all in on being a RUSH fan and still am at 60. Long live Rush. P.S in the 70's they were one of the loudest bands I've ever heard.
No kidding about the loud, I saw Rush many times, and I attribute some of my hearing loss to having been at those concerts (OK, being in the field artillery didn't help either). You would walk out of the arena shouting at your friends at the top of your lungs so they could understand you, and passersby would look at you like you were crazy people.
I was lucky enough to have been at one of the nights they recorded this. The old Massey Hall in Toronto was a fabulous venue. Rush never failed to impress in a live show.
Back in the day Lee this was our "favorite" Rush song to see and hear Live and just like this Live album with "In The End" after it !! 👍🎶 They were just amazing concert songs, so Atmospheric with all playing at their musical height during this early period and just like the photos with this album they had that great large White carpet laid out and that moody Purple stage lighting it set that mood so great with this song ! ✌🎸🥁🎸🎼
I will never forget seeing that live. They had green lasers going everywhere and a video of like Frazetta style Viking warriors and war dogs on a huge screen in all green video behind them. It was just trippy. Killer show.
I had this record in my collection for 48 years now, but there’s nothing like being there live and having it played right in front of your eyes by one of the greatest bands ever
there is a band that toured with them back in the day, Max Webster with Kim Mitchell from Toronto. Pye Dubois collaborated with Neil on song writing for both bands, and they put out a lot of great radio hits back then. Max had a monster hit in 1980 called Battle Scar. It has a surprise that you, yes YOU, will really like. Don' research it that'll totally spoil it
Always loved this version. One of the best live albums ever in my humble opinion. Alex Lifeson is killer and the other two, well, they are what they are. 70's Rush blew everyone's minds. Everyone with high-end musicians taste.
I actually saw Rush on the 2112 tour. They opened for Blue Oyster Cult, who were on their Agents of Fortune tour and who had an amazing laser light show. Awesome concert!! And, it only cost $5. What?!!✌❤
First Rush album I bought when it came out. Kinda melted my teenage drummer brain, lil bit. Then went to go see them with UFO and Max Webster as opening bands. Memories.
The thing with Neil even at his prime he was humble enough to to still seek out lessons, With Freddy Grubber and Peter Erskine , He talked about how he walked to Peters house like a thirteen year old with his sticks in his hand and full of excitement , He talked about how he learnt from Some tribal African drummers as he toured around Africa ,
You mentioned that there was so much "bite" in the 70s. As a teenager during that time, and Western Canadian, Rush was a "thing" and I was into them, as was my younger brother. The thing about that time was that there were no worries, other than what was immediately in front of you. Sure, I was aware of what was going on in Vietnam, watching the news and seeing how many Americans had died that day, but other than those kinds of things, and the death of someone you knew, stuff like that, life was mostly a cycle of activities and living, which included, dances, sports, etc., activities which were as regular as the seasons. This freedom and continuity in life, plus other factors which are more complicated, allowed artists to express themselves like at no other time. There was little censorship but also good manners, for the most part. We have too many worries these days, So many are unnecessary and which get in the way of living and creating. Thanks for your, always, interesting perspective.
#TeamByTor 🤔 This was around the time I figured out 😳 "They really do kick ass LIVE!" & when to shout 🤗 "Hey!" during YYZ. 😏 Plus this was after seeing them open for Kiss (and leaving a Rush fan). 🤗 This was also when folks thought they sounded like Zeppelin. 🤭😂 ByTor sounds a lot like Page 😌 is alls I'm saying! Again 🐾 #TeamByTor 🐶🐰
Lee, the last Rush song you did was "Animate" off the Counterparts 1993 album. I Love this high energy song By-Tor and the Snow Dog. Please do my favorite song on Counterparts album Live "Between Sun and Moon" Keep on doing what you're doing it's great. 🤘
Were always my favorite band back in the day. Unparalleled creativity to which they applied their superb talents to create the walls of sound that are still iconic. Great reaction! Rock on, Lee!
😒 Actually if you go back and listen to the song after hearing/seeing them LIVE, you go 😱 "Holy Crap!!! I didn't notice all that on the record." after seeing them in Jersey 2x. 😂 Its all there of course, but live, its a whole new level. 🤔 Necromancer, The Cygnus Books.... 😍 all sounded amazing Live and made me love those songs even more. 😏 I never listened to Necro on the Album or sang along if it played at a friends house while doing Homework. 😊🐰
Lee, fee free to listen to the whole ATWAS live album! The songs are all improvements on the original studio versions, certainly in terms of energy and volume! But, the "Working Man/Finding My Way/Drum Solo" track on the album is a MONSTER! Neil's 1976 solo is fierce and thunderous!! Do it, brother!
Time flies is so right. It's hard to believe it is almost 50 years since I walked into my local record store and used my 16th birthday record token to buy this album based purely on the cover. From the opening riff of Bastille Day I was a Rush fan. A few weeks later I used my Christmas record token to buy "2112". Where did the years go? It seems like yesterday.
This song is a transition from the early, Led Zep knock off days to the proto-prog metal later 70's. Alex's solo bit is directly inspired by Jimmy Page's space-y features with the bow and delay unit during LZ's concerts. Stoner rock lives, maaaaaan! 😆
Haha you mentioned Tool and spot on for that comparison, I saw them Sat Jan 27, In Biloxi MS was my 4th time seeing Tool, and EVERY TIME (just like Rush)always a better show. ALWAYS superb superior sound, lighting and the visuals were fantastic
Yes, Rush definitely had more energy and edge to their music in the early years, in more songs, but they do have more energy and edge and more metal again in their later albums starting in the mid 90's through to the last album in 2012. Like in the 70's, they use keyboards/synths more sparingly and once again have much more lead guitar from Alex and much more bass guitar from Geddy. Both mad scientists of guitars again. Of course Neil is always the hyper-mad master drummer through it all.
I had no time for the fantasy epics period, didn't take to them 'til 'Spirit of Radio' and 'Moving Pictures', which a housemate brought home new and I jammed with 'til I decided to take a break having lost my way around 'YYZ'. May have started on side 2 lol.😅 They did indeed smoke though, man, my apologies, Rush fans everywhere. ❤😊
This version was the first way I heard this song. And ever after the album version just didn’t stand up. The album version has that atmospheric section but it’s pale in comparison.
Yes ! L33, This will knock yourself out. Neil’s lyrics vision are so like an arrow to its target … the reality truth of nature’s forces towards man pollution of its only home…earth! The sea powers will win the shores… destructively… it’s now a reality!
ByTor n The Snowdog is so amazing! Definitely these guys were at the top of their game those yrs. Even many years after they created so much more amazing music n massive more hits! ❤ 🎉
My two favorite guitar players King Jimi Hendrix and his Son Alex Lifeson ...
what is amazing is when most of those top guitarists of all time Alex is either left off the list or not in the top 20 yet Neil is at the top of every list for drummers and Geddy at or near the top for Bass players did they not listen to Alex ?

RUSH!!!❤❤ Had the pleasure of seeing them live here in Canada 🇨🇦 many times.
Btw, when it may not seem like Alex is doing as much like in the ambient section, what he's doing though is quite and just beautifully expressive, he is so good at those volume swells on the electric guitar. I vastly prefer this over the studio version of the song.
Three guys...Three. incredible. This and the live Xanadu probably the finest live performances ever, by any band.
All It took was one listen to la villa Strangiato and I was a fan for life :))
Ears rang a good two days after a show.
This live album was the first Rush I ever heard. They were scary good then and only got better.
Holy shit..... you can never go wrong with Rush. I can't believe I never heard this one. Great pick, Mario!
I was lucky enough to have been at one of the nights they recorded this. The old Massey Hall in Toronto was a fabulous venue. Rush never failed to impress in a live show.
80's Geddy melodic vocals so much better than early screechy/screaming years. My only minor complaint about the early years.
RUSH The greatest rock band that ever was or ever will be.
My favourite Rush live performance.
Back in the day Lee this was our "favorite" Rush song to see and hear Live and just like this Live album with "In The End" after it !! 👍🎶
They were just amazing concert songs, so Atmospheric with all playing at their musical height during this early period and just like the photos with this album they had that great large White carpet laid out and that moody Purple stage lighting it set that mood so great with this song ! ✌🎸🥁🎸🎼
Thanks for all the Rush!
Memories...
🍄🌲🍄✨💥🌈😍
You need to check out this whole live album! The best versions of their songs up to that point are from this live album!!
This album is killer. I still have my album after all these years.
My favorite band since 77 seen them 47 times starting with this tour! Great reaction! In the End off this recording is my all time favorite of theirs!
Well I can see what you mean it's a great track often overlooked.
15:20 In 1980 at The St. Louis show Geddy Lee called Peart "Dr. Braino " right before Neil's Solo.
I believe that there is a live performance of this song on the dvd " Rush in Rio" You MUST watch it. You'll not regret it. Trust me!
Alex and his "backing band"! What's not to love?
FZ and these three are my Gods and have been since I was a little boy.
there is a band that toured with them back in the day, Max Webster with Kim Mitchell from Toronto. Pye Dubois collaborated with Neil on song writing for both bands, and they put out a lot of great radio hits back then. Max had a monster hit in 1980 called Battle Scar. In Context To The Moon, Highclass In Borrowed Shoes, Gravity, On The Road, Lilly.... so damn good. Kim is still going too.
I haven't heard this version in a long time - damn!
Always loved this version. One of the best live albums ever in my humble opinion. Alex Lifeson is killer and the other two, well, they are what they are. 70's Rush blew everyone's minds. Everyone with high-end musicians taste.
70s rush is just another animal... I love the other decades and eras but this one is almost unstoppable feeling
This is a top 3 song for Rush. Thank you for demonstrating originality.
I actually saw Rush on the 2112 tour. They opened for Blue Oyster Cult, who were on their Agents of Fortune tour and who had an amazing laser light show.
Awesome concert!! And, it only cost $5. What?!!✌❤
It doesnt get much better than this!!
First Rush album I bought when it came out. Kinda melted my teenage drummer brain, lil bit. Then went to go see them with UFO and Max Webster as opening bands. Memories.
I saw them with Max Webster and Cheap Trick. UFO was a favorite of mine back then.
I've seen them 20 times between 77 and around 95 and I honestly can't say for sure who I've ever seen them with, Probably smoked to much.
You should react to the song The Necromancer next, its like the 2nd part to this story.
proudly Canadian ! seen one of their last concert in montreal ! was a long show there was an intermission half way in ! lol ! 😎
The thing with Neil even at his prime he was humble enough to to still seek out lessons, With Freddy Grubber and Peter Erskine , He talked about how he walked to Peters house like a thirteen year old with his sticks in his hand and full of excitement , He talked about how he learnt from Some tribal African drummers as he toured around Africa ,
Now you're talkin. Working Man/ Finding My Way off this is the origin of Neil's solo(s)
They called Neil the “professor “. Awesome album.
The album is truly fantastic . A great live album . Rush as a three piece band were phenomenal..❤
3 Guys and so much music from just 3 Guys.
Apparently it takes 5 guys to make a stupid f*king burger.🤩
Incredible!

And THAT is why he is called The Professor.

That was effin great! 🔥🔥🔥
It definitely was Debbie!!!
I was schooled how to air guitar and air drum to this entire album by a new kid in my neighborhood, who was at this concert!
Were always my favorite band back in the day. Unparalleled creativity to which they applied their superb talents to create the walls of sound that are still iconic. Great reaction!
Rock on, Lee!
First RUSH tour I saw

I will definitely do more from this album. It's the 2112 tour!! How could I not?? Lol
I forgot how good this album is! Thank you for reacquainting it with me - Rush was my first concert in 80.

Epic.
I played the hell outta this album when I was in junior/senior high school. Classic

I see your Olias Of Sunhilo back there nice.
Don’t worry bro.. I’m still here. Till the end 👊🏻

Side 1… entirely! For a future request… 💥💥💥
If you haven't seen it, the Funny Or Die video "Jason Segel & Paul Rudd Meet Rush" is pretty funny.
🏆🏆🏆🏆!
I had no time for the fantasy epics period, didn't take to them 'til 'Spirit of Radio' and 'Moving Pictures', which a housemate brought home new and I jammed with 'til I decided to take a break having lost my way around 'YYZ'. May have started on side 2 lol.😅

Sorry drummer boy - The part of this song without the drums is still my favorite 😜
I'm always up for a Rush reaction. Check out Freewill
Another outstanding review! I was privileged to see them three times back in 78, 79, and 80.
Glad you enjoyed my friend! Shit was amazing. I'm so jealous that you got to see them back in the day!!
Saw them in 82 and 83. Would have loved to catch the 79 tour.
Natural Science, is a great tune. Check it out.
Yes ! L33, This will knock yourself out. Neil’s lyrics vision are so like an arrow to its target … the reality truth of nature’s forces towards man pollution of its only home…earth!

This was the first Rush album I ever heard and was hooked from that point on.
