    Thanks for your video! For my non-fiction self help book, should I use footnotes or in-text citations to cite my sources?

    • @BookLaunchers
      @BookLaunchers  2 роки тому

      Footnotes are common if there's only a few otherwise the most common is to actually use end notes and a bibliography.

      @@BookLaunchers Thank you! I'm incorporating a lot of research, so as you suggested, maybe I should go with end notes.

    Very informative, thank you! I'm just wondering about using "brief" lyrics from music, along with offering the writers/singers name and the name of the song...Would this be Okay? I've read a few articles that doing such is a major no-no if not obtaining specific permission and buying the use of the lyrics. In my case, its a fiction novel that briefly quotes maybe four or five words from a song, typically out of sequence. And I give the name...
    EXAMPLE:
    The man picks up a compact disc that lay atop the console- “Coldplay” he reads aloud … “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends.” He gazes at the cover art and softly remembers the artist- Eugène Delacroix, and inwardly surmises … La Liberté guidant le people-Liberty to the people?
    But the man had nothing, save that of his painful memories.
    … I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing … Roman Cavalry choirs are singing - I know Saint Peter won't call my name … the song echoed through his head.
    This would be the kind of quoting I use...and always "shout out" the singer and name of the song. If anyone can elaborate on this, that would be great! I've written six books, but this is my first fiction work. Excited and worried at the same time...but learning a lot. Thanks again!

      I am not a Copyright lawyer so you can only take what I say so far ... but I would think this is ok. Download that white paper I referenced and linked to and see what you think there. Good luck.

    How i can sel other books and avoid copywrite

  • @gatewaytobeing
    @gatewaytobeing Рік тому

    I was hoping to start a youtube channel in which I narrate NDE stories that have been submitted to IANDS, and then give commentary on them. I would be reading their entire stories though (usually 3-4 paragraphs long), and give credit to the website and the author if a name is given (many are anonymous or just have a first name and last initial). I have written to IANDS for permission but they have not yet responded. It kind of sounds like what I want to do is NOT covered by fair use and I may not be able to do it without IANDS written permission? None of these NDE stories were submitted for financial gain, so I wouldn't be taking away any earning potential. Thanks to anyone who can give me some insight.

    Great visuals! Is there a standard form for asking for permission to use copywrited material?

    • @BookLaunchers
      @BookLaunchers  6 років тому

      I'm not sure if there is a standard one. We have one that we give our clients to use ... it says something along these lines:
      I hereby grant to you x company or x person (and its parent company, affiliates, licenses and assignees), the rights and permission to use, reuse, publish and republish my [name, photograph, likeliness and statements and comments made by me, x book material, maybe specific quote], in whole or in part, without prior review, in all formats of the ‘BOOK WORK’ and any derivative works, including without limitation electronic works and including for the purposes of sale, trade, promotion, or advertising. I warrant the account told, written, or furnished by me are original with me and do not violate any copy write, personal, or proprietary right. I confirm that none of the information disclosed was acquired as a result of a confidential relationship or is treated as a trade secret.

    What about four words of song lyrics? I have musical Easter eggs in my books, these four words are couched in a conversation.

    • @BookLaunchers
      @BookLaunchers  6 років тому +1

      Hmmm given that it's for entertainment purposes I *think* it falls into the category of not fair use so you technically should have permission to be doing that. Again - NOT A LAWYER. :) But in my research that is how I interpret it. The other side of it, is what's the likelihood you will be sued or fined for something like that? I think it's very low ... but again NOT A LAWYER.

    • @Drathaar01
      @Drathaar01 6 років тому

      Bummer. I'll risk it. It could be a common saying too. I'll have to check that.

    • @bigblue6917
      @bigblue6917 6 років тому +1

      Okay, from the information you have provided I assume this is part of a fictional plot. Also that you are just using those four words and not the full lyrics. So with the same proviso about not being a lawyer I would suggest that it is possible it would not attract the lawyers and would just be regarded as a quote.

    • @Drathaar01
      @Drathaar01 6 років тому +1

      Cool, thanks. This is the first time I've used lyrics. The other Easter Eggs take a little thought to get. Only one person has mentioned finding one. Like in the second book, I named character just to make the egg work. You have to put the name, the two main characters names, and dialogue together to get it. Creative, I think. That's one nobody has picked up on yet. I'm going to be really proud of the person who finally gets it. I set that up far in advance!
      So book three spoiler alert:
      I'll spell out the words: A man says "Don't worry son, (America is gonna survive.) The lyrics are in parenthesis here. The man's description matches the singer of the song - same title as the lyrics. I didn't give him a name.

    This topic can get very confusing indeed, Julie. Too many gray areas. My understanding is that even though something falls under Fair Use, if your work is for profit then you should still get permission first. I’m dealing with this right now. Correct me if I’m wrong.

    • @BookLaunchers
      @BookLaunchers  6 років тому +1

      Well, a book is for profit but I do think it's pretty clear that you can use small amounts of work from copyrighted sources if you're using it for the purposes of backing up a point or arguing / criticizing their viewpoint. Where I think it gets murky is if you are using large amounts of the material (paragraphs) or if you are just putting their work into your book without a clear purpose. Check out the Alli guide I linked to. It's very thorough.

    • @GreatnessHarmonizes1
      @GreatnessHarmonizes1 6 років тому

      Yes, I’ll check out the guide. I had one publishing arm tell me that I would be charged when I asked permission to use just one sentence from a famous spiritual powerhouse. I have another case where the quotes that I want to use are all over the internet now without reference but I found them in a book back in 2012, so now I’m still waiting to hear from the publishing company. The book is currently out of print. So your video is very timely as usual. Thank you.

    • @bigblue6917
      @bigblue6917 6 років тому

      Firn El I would have thought that if you had it properly attributed it there should be no problem. It is not like you are quoting whole book. Yes you may be making a profit on your book but so do millions of other authors when quoting other works. And I am not sure why you would be charged for getting permission, especially as it is not needed. Reference it correctly and there should be no problem.

      Hey Crystal - that's way too general of a question because if you're new and just starting to write my advice is different than if you've published. But, the best advice is always 'the missing piece is always action' so just keep taking steps forward and building your audience.
