Thank goodness for you Abbie, you've seriously taught me so much and I'm farther along in writing a story than I've ever been. Thank you for all your hard work, you're a great teacher.
I think it's also worth mentioning what just happened to me. I purchased ISBNs from Bowker. They have an upsell page for copyrighting your book. They claim they're giving you discount by charging you $85 and they'll take care of the entire process. Well, I did it. They took my money, and I STILL had to pay the $65 filing fee. In other words, they ran off with my $85 and saved me about.... 5 minutes of headache. Wow. Don't do it. Their page is title "CopyrightsNow!" which is a property of DigiRights. I'm sharing this in the hopes that some of you that are thinking of purchasing your ISBNs through Bowker, DO NOT purchase the Copyright upgrade. They literally don't do anything for you other than ripping you off by claiming they're saving you bit of time.
Wow this is good to know! I've purchased ISBN numbers through Bowker before but always did the copyrights manually through this process in the video. Thank you for sharing your experience!
Dude, I am currently about to publish a book and this lowkey saved me. I’m a teen so I can’t be throwing $85 down the drain like that. Bowker was the option I was leaning towards, but this opened my eyes!! Thank you so much!! 💕
I'm glad I can get pretty much all the information I need to write a book from channels like yours Abbie! Most every aspect of writing is covered just on youtube!
I am so glad you made this video. I have seen so many people in writer’s group who believe that simply putting your work in print is a copyright protection. In America (since the UK is a little different on this), only a “registered” copyright is recognized in a courtroom in the event someone infringes on your copyright.
I've been working on a very deep novel for the past 4 years. This novel contains many difficult challenges I had to overcome in life, and it means so much to me. Uploading the file to officially become a copyrighted work... I just couldn't help but shed tears. Thank you so much for this.

New to your videos. Between you, Jerry Jenkins, and K.M.Weiland, I'm confident that I'll be able to confidently make the transition from screenwriter to book author. This video is a godsend as I have been wondering about this for a while. Questions - 1) If you use a pen name, is there a place for it when you apply for a copyright? 2) Does registering your book with the WGA provide sufficient protection? If it's good enough for a screenplay then why not? 3) The moment you register your copyright, is that when you can then use it, or do you have to wait for the letter? 4) Who puts the copyright in the book, you or the publisher? Thanks a million.
Hi Abbie, thank you very much for all your advices and tips and words. I am an fresh author published one book and I did quite a few mistakes… your windows helped me to get better and to do it right. I am working on my book series at the moment for 2 months already and your steps are helping me very ❤❤
Congratulations on making a wonderful tutorial on how to copyright a book. I have bookmarked this video so that when it's time to copyright my book, I will use it as my guide. Again, you did a fantastic job making this video. With that said, I do have a couple of questions I hope you or someone else will answer. 1: What file format should I use when I upload my book? A word doc? An ebook? A PDF? What do you recommend? 2: I've seen books that have a copyright catalog or control number included on their copyright page. I was told that this is important because it validates that your work is indeed registered in the Library of Congress. Your thoughts? Again, thank you for making this video. It showed me what to expect when it's time for me to submit my book. :)
Thanks for the video Abbie. :D Really interesting topic. I'm from Germany and looked this up for my country. In Germany, your work will automatically be protected by copyright, the day you start writing. You don't really have to do anything else. If you really want to be sure, you have to hire a notary and deposit the work there... but that will cost a lot. :) So for EU you don't have to register your work.
This was actually REALLY helpful, thank you! I'd love if you did more on the legalities of the indie and self-pub route, tbh. Thank you for this so much!
Hi Abbie, I'm an avid reader, I'll take books in any format. I've been working on writing my own novel and that's how I happened upon your channel. I've learned a lot from your videos and others. I have a few books figured out but keep getting stuck on the actual writing part. I know I'll push through this block! I'll finish it today (I work long days). Samantha
I feel like if the book I’m writing works out, it will likely take me two or three years to actually finish, including all the not fun steps like this. I feel like a few years from now, I’ll be sitting down with my dad as he explains copyright and how to do it and such, and then he’ll likely get frustrated at the computer for being slow or ‘stupid.’ I love my dad. Thank you for the video btw! I have no way of knowing if writing a book right now will work out, but if it does, I will definitely be looking back at this video for help 😂😂😂
This was seriously soooo helpful. Thank you so much for this info! I actually had a question sort of in relation to this- when finding an editor, how do you protect your work so that someone can't steal it before anything is finished? You don't copyright THAT soon, right?
I'm so glad this video was helpful to you! Copyrighting before submitting to agents/editors is up to you as the author. This article might help answer some of your questions: www.writersdigest.com/publishing-insights/should-i-copyright-my-writing-before-submitting-to-agents-and-editors
Thank you so much for sharing this video. I've just sent my book out to my ARC readers, and I wasn't sure what was involved with copyright. I honestly thought I just had to put a claim on the book and it was good. Oh the naivety of the new author ;).
Abbie, thank you so so so so much for this video!!! I can't even begin to tell you how awesome and valuable your channel is!! I've been writing for many years and am making the decision to pursue indie publishing (I queried, got rejected, and the more I've looked into the industry, the more I feel like "I don't want some publisher coming in here and ruining my babies!"). I am so scared, but so excited too! BTW, I just read 100 days of sunlight (you DESTROYED me!!!!) and I cannot wait for the otherworld to come out! :D Also, also have you done a video (or blogpost) on isbn's? That's another thing that scares me haha
Love and be careful with your rights to your creative work. It is imperative that you own the copyright to your creative work at all times. Even if you must be an anonymous creator, there must be someone on the other side that have your interests covered that you trust. If not, that precious creative flame that gives wealth, culture, and prosperity to all can flicker and disappear. Keep it safe.
For the manuscript submission, I have a mixture of images and text. Do I submit a manuscript with the images included? They contain letters relavent to the story. Or do I find a way to insert the text only? Also do I include a title page, or just jump into chapter 1?
I have 4 questions. 1) Do I have to first publish my book to register copyright? 2) When it comes to copyright, do I have continue to renew it or once I’ve registered is it forever? 3) In books there’s usually a page with copyright and other publishing details. Is there a specific way to do that or do we just say that it has been copyrighted? 4) Do we have to pay to watch the Masterclass video to format a book? Thanks!
Thank you Abbie😊. Your tutorial was very clear and so easy to follow ( even for a person like me, who can be technically challenged😂). God bless you and thank you so much again!
I have a tini-tiny question. If I am using a pen name on my book and don't want my actual name out there, can I write my pen name in copywriting or do I have to use my real name?
The process to correctly register a pseudonym (pen name) can be tricky, especially if you want to keep your legal name private. Here’s the US Copyright Office’s informational link to register “Pseudonyms”: www.copyright.gov/circs/circ32.pdf
I'm a little confused, especially if your work is a graphic novel how to register it. And if the cover is your cover art. Thanks for the general info. Very helpful step by step registration!
Thank you so much for your videos, you’re amazing. I’m currently working on a ya contemporary and This video is perfect for the future plans I have with it. 💜
Dearest Abbie, I’ve been watching your videos for several months now. My road to become an author is still very far in the distance and I have been getting overwhelmed by the whole process but thanks to you, you helped me to get through this writing mess and by you breaking down the „How-to“ - I’m starting to understand it better. So, thank you 🫶🏻💕
Hello Abbie. Thank you so much for this amazing video. I LOVE your videos as I often mention and I have learnt a lot from you. I am currently in the formatting stage of my book. I will be releasing it for pre-order on 27th July. I hope that one day you can read the book that you helped me create. Thank You Abbie. Keep Up The Great Work You Are Doing My Friend.
If I've written a commercial for a company, would it basically follow the same process since its a written work? I'm assuming that would be included as a literary work even though it would ultimately get performed/acted out?
@NickyP1 wrote, “I'm assuming that would be included as a literary work even though it would ultimately get performed/acted out?” Literary works are meant to be read by others. If, however, your “literary” work is intended to be performed for an audience, then you should register it as a Performing Arts (PA) work of authorship. You can also contact the US Copyright Office for clarification
Thanks so much for this Abbie! Quick question: How do you format the document with your manuscript? For example, the final version of my book is now in Vellum with all the interior formatting of front and back matter. Can I export that as a PDF (has other details like the book map and other artwork I commissioned from others and such too) or do I copy and paste just the chapters into a word document and copyright that? Thanks so much!!!
Abbie, do we need to add our book cover on the start of our official final manuscript while uploading to the copyright page? Also, do we need to add a copyright page in the final official manuscript which we are registering for copyright? Lastly, can you make a video about ISBN? I am absolutely new to writing so it will help me a lot. Thanks Abbie. I have learnt a lot from you. ❤❤❤
Great questions! You do not need to provide your book cover to register the copyright for your book. You can include a copyright notice in the front matter (like the one I show at 06:50) with the year of the registration and your name. I will make a video about ISBNs in the future for sure! I use Bowker to purchase my ISBNs and they are very reputable in my experience. :) I hope that helps!
What if you use a pen name/pseudonym, do you use that when filing your copyright or your actual name or both? Or does that also depend on where in the world you are?
Use the following US Copyright Office informational circular link to help you register works under a pen (aka a *pseudonym*) name: www.copyright.gov/circs/circ32.pdf
Dear Abbie, two questions: how does the process change with pseudo-names and 2: if you publish internationally, like Canada, Uk, Australia, do you need to do copyrights for every country? (and does publishing through Amazon change that?) Thank youuuuuuu ❤❤❤
If you're publishing under a pen name, you will simply enter the pseudonym alongside your information in the appropriate fields during the registration process. (You can see the spot for a pseudonym at 10:23 on the lower right side of the screen.) As for publishing worldwide, you do not need to register a copyright for each country you publish in. The copyright is for one work and so you only need to register a copyright in the country you're based in. 😁 I hope that helps!
@@AbbieEmmons thank you so much Abbie! Im so humbled that you responded to me 🙏❤️ thr information is so helpful, I hope I can thank you in person one day ❤️
Hello, I have a few questions on the copyright. If we already submitted our manuscript into the copyright submissions, are we allowed to make small tweak changes, like fixing apostrophes, commas, spelling, word placements and so on? Or do we have to buy a whole other copyright submission completely and void the old one? Thanks for the video!
@rocksreviewsreactions337 wrote, “If we already submitted [registered] our manuscript into the copyright submissions, are we allowed to make small tweak changes, like fixing apostrophes, commas, spelling, word placements and so on? Or do we have to buy [register] a whole other copyright submission completely and void the old one?” If you made “SUBSTANTIVE” changes, additions, and/or deletions to your original work, then you should registered those updates as a “derivative” work. Use the $65 Standard Application. If you’re only making (minor) spelling & grammar corrections, you may not have to register the work with an updated registration, but you can if you wish (there’s no harm). The original registered work will not be cancelled; it’ll supplement the updated derivative registered work. If you’re unsure about this topic, contact the US Copyright Office for assistance.
You are PHENOMENAL! Now that I have followed your steps to registering the copyright for my book, do I have to wait for the certificate from the government before I can publish? Thank you for this!
@Drjae wrote, “…do I have to wait for the certificate from the government before I can publish?” The day the US Copyright Office (USCO) *“receives”* your completed and correctly-fill-out registration application + your deposit (a copy of your book) + your filing fee, that’s when it’s been officially “registered” If you registered your work as UN-published, wait a few days before publishing it (listing, selling, licensing, sharing, etc.). If may take a few weeks to receive your *Certificate of Registration* in the mail. Store it along with your book with your important papers. I store mine in a safe deposit box.
Thank you for providing more practical evidence in creating a book like this! I just have one question: if you create a copyright registration based on your final manuscript, then shouldn't you make the copyright notice first instead of after?

Abbie, thank you for sharing and helping me achieve my dreams of becoming an author! much love to ya!
Great video. Just one thing regarding copyright is that you already have it. You should officially register as Abby is suggesting, but you should know your work is already protected.
In many countries, including the United States, once you have created a novel in tangible form (such as writing it down or saving it to your computer), it is automatically protected by copyright. This means that your novel is protected by copyright law, even if it is not officially registered with the Copyright Office or does not use the copyright symbol (©). This automatic protection gives you certain exclusive rights, such as the right to copy, distribute, display and perform your work.
Although copyright protection is automatic, there are advantages to registering your novel with your country's copyright office. Registering your work gives you additional legal protection and makes it easier to defend your rights in the event of infringement. For example, registration in the US is usually required if you want to sue for copyright infringement.
Thank you so much, Abbie! This will help me a lot!
This was actually REALLY helpful, thank you! I'd love if you did more on the legalities of the indie and self-pub route, tbh. Thank you for this so much!

I'm so glad this video was helpful to you! Copyrighting before submitting to agents/editors is up to you as the author. This article might help answer some of your questions: www.writersdigest.com/publishing-insights/should-i-copyright-my-writing-before-submitting-to-agents-and-editors
Thanks Abbie it is really useful info. Every time I have any problems in writing Your advice always helped me a lott😸😸
I'm so glad! 💗
This was super helpful! I would love to see more videos like this, it really clears a lot up! 😅
Thank you so much for sharing this video. I've just sent my book out to my ARC readers, and I wasn't sure what was involved with copyright. I honestly thought I just had to put a claim on the book and it was good. Oh the naivety of the new author ;).
I actually published my childrens book on Amazon KDP a few months ago before learning this information....YIKES! Hopefully all is good😟. Thanks again!
Also, also have you done a video (or blogpost) on isbn's? That's another thing that scares me haha
thank you so much!!! i was so scared to start this process but you helped me so much!! Thanks!!!!
Thank you for this video! You're awesome.
Thank you Abbie. I love the basics so easily explained. I'm gonna get my copyright right now!
Thank you for answering questions I have had for years!
Very helpful. Thanks for walking through the copyright site.
Thanks!
@Writer_reader_1 wrote, 1) Do I have to first publish my book to register copyright?
No. If your book is completed, you can register it as an “un-published” work prior to publishing it. Or you can register it as a published work but NO later than THREE-months of its FIRST-date of publication (to preserve many of your legal rights). I generally register my works as un-published works. Just don’t register your un-published work on a Wednesday, and on that VERY Wednesday, officially publish it; wait two full days before listing/publishing your book (otherwise, you may have a defective registration)
2) When it comes to copyright, do I have continue to renew it or once I’ve registered is it forever?
Once you’ve registered an un-published or published book, you do NOT have to re-register it. Your copyright will last for your life plus 70-years (upon your death, you can assign your copyright to your heirs and others). If, however, you’ve made “substantive” changes to your original work, then you should quickly complete the $65 Standard Application and record those updates as a “derivative” work with the US Copyright Office.
3) In books there’s usually a page with copyright and other publishing details. Is there a specific way to do that or do we just say that it has been copyrighted?
This is beyond my background. I would, though, include the following ROBUST copyright attribution if my work was registered with the US Copyright Office:
* Registered Copyright © < URL and/or social media link/s and/or handles>.
Thank you Abbie😊. Your tutorial was very clear and so easy to follow ( even for a person like me, who can be technically challenged😂). God bless you and thank you so much again!
OMG I AM SOO EXCITED, thank you for the vid!
You literally made my life so easy!!! Thank you!!
I so needed this! Thank you Abbie! I look forward to protecting my debut novel with this!💕
Omg how cooool is thiiiis ❤❤❤ thank you Abbie!!!
Thanks for this video! I've never seen this done before. It was very informative.
This is my first experience. Thank you so much for sharing this information.
What if we want to use a pen name?
And if we commission art to own for the cover, do we register that as well here?
I have a tini-tiny question. If I am using a pen name on my book and don't want my actual name out there, can I write my pen name in copywriting or do I have to use my real name?
The process to correctly register a pseudonym (pen name) can be tricky, especially if you want to keep your legal name private. Here’s the US Copyright Office’s informational link to register “Pseudonyms”: www.copyright.gov/circs/circ32.pdf
Thanks for your video. I would never have been able to navigate the copyright process by myself.
Great easy to follow instruction. If you submit the final edited draft, do you have to include the book cover as well?
So, thank you 🫶🏻💕
YESS! on time as always. thank you so much Abbie
@NickyP1 wrote, “I'm assuming that would be included as a literary work even though it would ultimately get performed/acted out?”
Literary works are meant to be read by others.
I have the same question, too. 😕
I know other people already asked but you’ll probably have to make a follow up on what to do when you use a pen name
This!!
I would have made a huge mistake by copying right by mail. Thank you, Abby, for this information. I found it to be very helpful. 🙂👍
Thank you. Registering first time: Chrome on Mac wasn't processing, but Firefox worked fine.
Hello Abbie! How do you copyright pen names?
Dear Abbie, two questions: how does the process change with pseudo-names and 2: if you publish internationally, like Canada, Uk, Australia, do you need to do copyrights for every country? (and does publishing through Amazon change that?) Thank youuuuuuu ❤❤❤
I was also wondering about this! I'm planning to publish under a pen name rather than my legal name!
If you made “SUBSTANTIVE” changes, additions, and/or deletions to your original work, then you should registered those updates as a “derivative” work.
How do you put the copyright in your book? While going to someone who will format it or after it's done woth editing?
If I could give you diamonds and gold for this video, I would! lol I've been looking for something like this for a while now! Thank you 🙏
You are PHENOMENAL! Now that I have followed your steps to registering the copyright for my book, do I have to wait for the certificate from the government before I can publish? Thank you for this!
@Drjae wrote, “…do I have to wait for the certificate from the government before I can publish?”
The day the US Copyright Office (USCO) *“receives”* your completed and correctly-fill-out registration application + your deposit (a copy of your book) + your filing fee, that’s when it’s been officially “registered”
If you registered your work as UN-published, wait a few days before publishing it (listing, selling, licensing, sharing, etc.).
If may take a few weeks to receive your *Certificate of Registration* in the mail. Store it along with your book with your important papers. I store mine in a safe deposit box.
Does the pen name have to be registered. For example, should I do a legal name change when I use the pen name in my copyright?
You can record the author of your work via your real name, nickname, or pseudonym (pen name): It’s your call.
Thanks so much! Do you have to get a new copyright if you change covers?
Thank you for providing more practical evidence in creating a book like this! I just have one question: if you create a copyright registration based on your final manuscript, then shouldn't you make the copyright notice first instead of after?
Thank you Abbie, I love it.
