I see many channels with millions of views reading children’s books out loud. Some have included legal clauses within their descriptions and some do not. If it truly was a copyright infringement, wouldn’t UA-cam flag the videos? I’m interested in starting my own channel and want to be sure I’m doing things the right way. Thank you!
How would UA-cam magically know? They don't have access to the transcripts of the books. Unless it's reported, they can't have that information to know. Having a clause in the description doesn't mean anything, as discussed in this video. Without written permission, it's illegal. And just because UA-cam doesn't flag it doesn't mean it's not illegal-the entire point is that unless you get written permission to read a book of any kind out loud in a video, on a stage, etc, you're violating copyright.
Here's a useful video that released on the main channel yesterday on why things like "credit to creator" and "no infringement intended" don't cover you legally at all: ua-cam.com/video/9e_otY0d3IE/v-deo.html
@@KMRobinsonBooks thank you! I really don’t know the ins and outs of how UA-cam works when it comes to uploading my own content. I will check out that video.
I teach social media on my main channel (not this one) Here's a full playlist on UA-cam content: ua-cam.com/play/PLCYnDG9b0_S7v1cGhxrJ87hKvoO8zLfZZ.html
Hi mam , I'm interested in reading a book alongside giving my review or feedback with my own content . Meaning , i will read maybe 4-5 pages of a book and then give a brief commentary and discuss my own quotes . Mam will i be in any trouble ?
What if you read the book for education purposes?
I am so glad I found your channel. My livestream chat gave me the idea to post pre-recorded audio of books here when I brought up my love for reading. I didn't even think of copyright as I was just excited to do something to share my love of books with my community. Thank you so much for this.
So glad we could help!!
Hi there! What about if I am not the person reading the book, what if I’m simply turning the pages of the book and the coinciding cassette tape is playing. As in a children’s book and cassette tape. Thank you for your answer!
Oh! And would it be different on a Facebook group or page as opposed to UA-cam and such? Thank you!
@@Aunt-Shirley then you're violating two copyrights, the audiobook and the book. There's no difference between them, they're all a public performance. Even reading the book to neighborhood kids in your back yard is a public performance and requires a license.
I haven’t watched the video yet but what I see is how you answer comments in DETAIL. That’s EXCELLENT!!!! 👏🏾
I’m here to get people as much information as possible😉
Holy, the fact you've replied to basically all of these comments with in-depth answers is unbelievable. This entire video comment page is a wealth of information in of itself.
My goal is to make sure people get answers and get back to what they were doing quickly ;) Especially in the publishing space, it's so easy to get mis information and fear mongering, so I make sure I bring on guests like Tony that bring correct info to keep everyone safe, protected, and productive! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for taking the time to leave such a nice comment! I appreciate you being here.
I own a bookstore. One thing that wasn't covered was reading a small excerpt from a book. Creating videos to increase the sale of a book seems like fair use when you only plan to read a couple of paragraphs from different parts of a book as part of a review to sell the book
As Tony likes to say, fair use is one of the most misused and misunderstood things ever, so we’ve done a few more episodes on it:
Is It Fair Use To Read Book Aloud On UA-cam Or In Public-ua-cam.com/video/8T79dl5EqEI/v-deo.html

Can You Read Picture Books On UA-cam Or Social Media Legally-ua-cam.com/video/3Zp-TdJsdXc/v-deo.html
Most people will try to claim that it’s marketing, but it still falls under copyright protection, and you, even as a book seller, need to make sure you have permission to do so. Because you’re a bookseller, most publishers and authors will be willing to have a discussion with you on it, and if they give you permission, it’s their decision what passages you’ll be able to share publicly.
Even as a seller, you still fall under the same rules as everyone else…and you also have the added layer of profiting off those sales, so it’s especially important to make sure you’re getting that writing permission and consent to be reading passages.
This also seems like a great episode to film so I’ve also added this to our list, thanks for the great question!
@@KMRobinsonBooks Did you ever make this video? My search for whether I can read a small excerpt and then comment on how those lines made me feel is what brought me to this video. I think it's intuitive that reading an entire chapter or an entire book on UA-cam is a no no. Afterall, if I can come on UA-cam and listen to a book then why buy the book? (...adversely impacting the revenues and thus royalties to the author.)
@@economicintuition Video on bookstores reading things: ua-cam.com/video/CtQjTW2Es44/v-deo.html
Oh this was so helpful I didn’t even know public domain books existed! Thank you for this information.
Glad it helped!
@@KMRobinsonBooks : How do I know if a book is a public domain and does that mean once it is a public domain, I can read from it.
@@vivveene We answered all of that in the video ;) Definitely give that another look.
Most of rhe books I've bought for myself and as gifts are ones that I've listened to in UA-cam . I would hope authors would grant permission, it makes them$$$. Over the past year alone I've spent a several hundred $ on books I first heard of and listened to on UA-cam.
It doesn't make them money. Even if they get a few sales, it's hundreds-thousands of dollars they don't get from people who don't buy it. If a channel is monetized, that person who stole the content makes money off the stolen content.
Unless it's specifically from a publisher or author directly, it's likely stolen content, and we 100% do not support that. It literally ends authors' careers.
I'm an author and I would be honored if somebody wanted to read my book and share it online
might be fun to read public domain books
Public libraries often have reading days where someone reads a different children's book each week. I guess maybe they're asking permission
They are required to since it's a public performance. Most authors and publishers grant permission to libraries, schools, etc.
Wait. Chapter summary is copyright infringement? Where is the line? Whole book summary ok but not sectional breakdowns?
A whole book summary is like a 5 sentence overview of the entire book, not chapter by chapter. You are not giving away the details of the book, but can reference the giant over all themes. The entire point is you can't give away the content of a book. Don't break it down it. Think about what themes are already presented in the book blurb...that's the kind of thing you can talk about because that's public information to describe the book.
You have a beautiful smile! You light my day!
So what is considered fair use? I'd like to read just the first page of 200-ish page middle grade novels to get people interested in reading the whole book. Is that okay or not? I've reached out to several publishing companies to ask their permission, but that was back in November, and I haven't heard from any of them. It makes me wonder if they're like, "Why are you even asking about 1 page?" Or maybe that's not the case. Confused. Thanks!
I wouldn't recommend it. Read the blurb that's public on Amazon/Barnes and Noble. Give an overview in your own words on what you find interesting and exciting about the book. If you're excited about a book, the listeners will be too, so tell them all the wonderful reasons they should be reading it, but don't read any of the actual book without express written permission from the copyright holder (you don't want to sour any potential relationship with them or hurt your love of the story when they get upset you did something without permission)
@@KMRobinsonBooks got it! Thank you!!
But what if you give the officer credit and the publisher credit for what you're reading?Isn't that okay
Of course not. Think about it this way: you go do your job, and instead of getting paid, they'll give you credit on their website. Sounds fair and legal, right?
Thank you
so if i read from copyright free books (public domain books) on youtube , is it ok?
yes
Thank you for this interesting information, but then what about the classics. I mean Shakespeare or Conan Doyle etc for example.
Cuz google says: "How long is copyright on books UK? - Literary works are protected when they are original, and the duration will depend on when the works were created, not their popularity at any given point. However, recent works may be protected by copyright until the next century, as copyright lasts for 70 years after the death of the author" or about America: ''One secret of the publishing industry is that most American books published before 1964 never extended their copyright, meaning they're in the public domain today."
We discuss copyright and public domain at length in many of these videos. Things that are out of copyright because they are super old obviously aren't going to have copyright protection. It is your obligation to do extensive research on each individual piece you're considering to see if you legally have the rights or freedom to work with each specific piece.
So would I be ok to read the Bible?
When someone posts a book reading aloud on youtube, can someone else on the site use that person's readiing, take their voice out, and use your own voice to narrate the book? Would that be aloud, or is it prohibited to do so?
..,.that’s copyright infringement of both the book and the audio, so now you’ve doubled your fines of $150,000 per infraction. If you don’t own the copyright to anythinggggggg you can’t steal it and use it.
@@KMRobinsonBooks Thank you for letting me know.
I’m guessing you are an author based on your passion for this issue. UA-cam is full of channels doing book readings. I’m curious how many copyright cases have been litigated against small channels doing book readings by publishers and authors? And of those how many have been successfully litigated?
The music industry for years has tried to grapple with copyright issues; some successful some not. But one thing that has emerged is the concept of alterations or transformative works.
If a book is written, obviously someone can’t just copy the enter text and publish it as their own since that would be a blatant copyright violation. However, if someone is taking a written copy, and then speaking the copy out loud, or even further, acting the parts of the text out loud, that sounds like a transformation from written to verbal content. Does it not?
I’d advise watching the episode again as this was all very clearly covered😉
So for example the copyright page said copyright 2007 and it s past that year were safe to read it or is that when the copyright was issued and there is a certain time past that, that must be waited till?
We discussed this in the video. Everything is protected for a very long time. Things from the early 1900s are just starting to be public domain and not even all of those count. Things from 2007 won't be public domain until at earliest 2087 IF it qualifies at that point.
What about books that are hundreds of years old?
We addressed that in the video ;)
If you are granted permission by the copyright claimant, how do you document that in your UA-cam video or other online read aloud? Do simply say aloud - I'm reading this book with permission from X? Does it need to appear in text in the video?
And, for a children's picture book, is it assumed that a read aloud also includes showing the pictures? Or does showing the pictures require a different approval process? Thanks!
All of that would be covered in the licensing agreement contract and will vary contract to contract. That's something you have to discuss with the copyright holder and you have to make sure is in the paperwork giving you permission to use in, spelling out the very specific capacity in which you are allowed to use it.
What about reading Greek literature written 2000 years ago and published penguin?
Go find an older version that is public domain. Penguin has a copyright on their version.
@@KMRobinsonBooks ty
Thank you for this content.
i want to ask if this also affects book reviews.
Like review a book chapter by chapter and discussing higihlights of the book as a way of encouraging others to read.
Do i need copyright permission for book review
Summarizing books chapter by chapter is a huge no no. That's infringing on so much. Book reviews as a whole are designed to help people decide if a book is a good fit for them or not, not a summary of the book or the chapters ;) There's a great video listed as the main video on the channel talking about the correct way to do book reviews that might be very valuable for you to check out. Going through a book section by section can most certainly get you in big trouble. We've done tons of episodes on this here on the channel with our lawyer that would be highly informative on why it's not okay to be doing chapter by chapter things with books ;)
Here is a important question - What if the book is 150 yrs old?
Please watch again, we specifically went over how to know if a book is in public domain.
@@KMRobinsonBooks Yeah I added the question before watching the full part and yes I did see that which is great. If it is archived then it is free game. Thank you for the reply
Question- is it ok to take pics of the pages of smaller kids story books (not chapter books) books with pictures & words. Take pics of these pages, crop & share the pics in order in a post. Is this allowed? I have so many great books from many years of my kids growing up, now they're older and I'm going through these books and just thinking I would really like to share these with other people & kiddos. I think that's a way to do it. Is this ok? Maybe I can start an instagram page for this? Thank you!
That's a massive copyright violation, do not do that without written consent from the copyright holder.
Here's a video specifically on reading pictures books that explains why it's even more dangerous to do than using a small passage from a full length novel, and all the points apply to taking photos and putting them not he internet too:
ua-cam.com/video/3Zp-TdJsdXc/v-deo.html
I wanted to read bits of each chapter. Not the whole book from cover to cover. It’s a self help book. And can help others. I could contact the writer and ask.
You will have to contact the copyright owner and get a license to read even small sections.
How does this work for song lyrics? Let’s say reading (not singing) song lyrics that are 30+ years old? For example Bob Marley lyrics?
Still copyright infringement.
If a book is published almost 20 years back and it's available in book form everywhere, an audio book by author is already available on YT. And if I read it on my channel will it be illegal???
Of course that's illegal. It's copyright infringement. You do not have the rights to use ANYTHING without the express written consent of the copyright holder. THEY can do what they want...if they want to put it on UA-cam, cool, they're the copyright holder. YOU cannot touch it without their permission.
Can you read public domain books (books that have expired copyrights) on UA-cam?
We discussed this in the video, give it another watch 😉
I’m a teacher and have an unlisted UA-cam page that only my students have access to. Can I read books there for them only or is it a no?
Never mind, I just read the inside of one of the library books I checked out.😔
That would still violate copyright😉 (also, I’m a former elementary teacher!)
Here’s another great video you should check out:
Does A Public Performance License Give Me Permission To Record A Book Reading For UA-cam?
ua-cam.com/video/BMRGjtynd2s/v-deo.html
@@KMRobinsonBooks That’s cool! Ok thanks. What about if I record on dvd and just play it on my class? Is that still a violation?
Great information thanks 🙏
Happy to help! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Could you do an online book club type deal? Like I read the book online but take pause to talk about it with everyone?
Also if I do an animated video would it? I think it would be considered original content, including the video footage and audio. Which does classify under fair use.
All of this is massive copyright infringement. None of it qualifies even remotely as fair use. These are tons of videos on fair use in the legal playlist on the channel (I’m traveling and can’t grab the link for you)
so...books write 100 years ago are okay to read then? great. thats what im reading. and i looked up the publisher copywriter but nothing came up. i typed the authers name, the title of the book, and the publisher. and nothing. so does that mean im good.
Thanks so much for this video!
Happy to help!
Thank you this is very helpful. I’ve been a viewer of booktube videos for a while. If I were to want to create content, is it okay to show a book? Like perhaps the cover or perhaps read a quote from the book to support point you are making. Or show an image of a quote you highlighted? I will continue to do research on the legalities of this. Thank you 😊
You're fine to hold up the book or show the cover. You can read a line here or there, but always refrain from spoilers ;)
So if you have a public performance license, that gives you liberty to read any book on youtube?
Those are two very different licenses. If you think about it, a public performance is a one-time thing for a specific audience. A reading for UA-cam lives on forever, has no cut of date for consumption, has no location, and can reach globally. These are two very different licenses.
What about like just reading a page like for a book review type thing?
Still very much copyright infringement. Here's an entire playlist with videos on this topic: ua-cam.com/play/PLuCHOUEv909fxDdDdD_hErkDLfmppL_QO.html
Thank you for your valuable content, how about my child reading her bedtime Story, is this can face to copy right issue? Should I stop her to read on UA-cam or is it OK to continue?
You can read to your child in your own home by yourselves. Videoing it is a copyright infringement. Putting it on UA-cam can get you slammed with massive fines and your channel being shut down.
thanks@@KMRobinsonBooks
If you mention the author and not reading the book as your own is that okay?
That is still illegal, copyright theft, and never okay. Please watch the episode again, we discussed that at length😉
Can u add some tips on how to start this UA-cam channel as reading aloud some books/ stories... thanks a lot
Well, as we said, it's pretty much impossible to have a book reading channel because you'd have to have a ridiculously high amount of money to be able to afford the licenses for that. But if you want to learn to grow a UA-cam channel that is not that, I have full playlists on UA-cam.com/kmrobinson
Is there a letter template? What specifically should go into this kind of message?
Specify how you want to use it and ask for permission. Don't do anything until you have in writing that you have permission, otherwise it violates copyright and you can be sued.
Where do I get public domain books
catalog.loc.gov/
What about downloading epub books from websites?
Copyright infringement. Physical vs digital does not matter
So is it ok to just read a small portion, such as a few paragraphs? Almost like a preview or sample?
No, that's copyright infringement and can get you sued, fined, etc. Even if you're only looking to read a sentence or two, you need to get permission first because fair use only holds up if you meet very, very specific things, as discussed in the video.
@@KMRobinsonBooks Ok, thanks for the clarification.
@@KMRobinsonBooks question, all that applies for youtube videos? I person who uploads a video reading a small portion from a book, can be sued? on youtube

No, that's major copyright infringement. As we've talked about in these videos, you could use like maybe 5-20 seconds of an entire movie and then comment on it. Even that could be pushing it. You definitely can't play even a few minutes of a movie or show and just "chime in" (or even talk through the duration with it behind you, still major infringement)
@@KMRobinsonBooks thank you very much for explaining that to me
Is there a difference between reading livestream or pre recorded video?
Both are copyright infringement and illegal without securing a proper license. To find out the proper license you need, you must contact the copyright holder of the book. Public performance licenses only over a single performance in person and can't be then recorded and put online without extra licenses.
Here's another video talking about why that is: ua-cam.com/video/BMRGjtynd2s/v-deo.html
Hi I am from Sri Lanka. I would like to create audio books from translated. Could you please tell me where I should get permission? To whom do I have to pay and how much?
You must identify the copyright holder. If it's based off a different language translation, you'll need permission from both the language copyright holder AND the main copyright holder. You should expect to pay several thousand dollars minimum for a public performance. If you want to create actual audiobooks, you can expect to pay much more. The cost will be determined by the copyright holder and will vary from book to book.
I want to turn my channel into a reading from books, articles, blogs or news print channel. Is possible any at all and how do I go about it?
Are of that is super illegal. You would have to pay (a lot) of money to license each individual piece you’d want to read and it would be very unlikely you’d monetize enough to cover the licensing fees when you eventually get monetized. I’d strongly recommend picking something else.
How about if I am reading a book that hadn’t been published in another language and I have translated it (I’m trilingual and do translation and localisation work so I have a few authors who have given me permission but would like to expand)
If you’re translating books, that’s serious violations (unless you were hired by the copyright owner to do so) Absolutely do not do this unless you’re under written contract. Definitely don’t read them in any video/livestream/audio/etc without a license. If you’re translating without being hired to, that’s multiple violations and some serious fines you don’t want to mess with. If, however, you can get hired to translate, that’s a pretty great gig that pays pretty well, so if you’re interested in that and can get in with some publishers, it might be worth your time.
@@KMRobinsonBooks thanks so much for replying really appreciated and I understand what you are saying. I probably didn't explain clearly but yes, I am the only translator who curated the EN→IT and vice versa book localisation and translation directly for the author. I was employed free lance to work on the project and got permission to use the Italian version ebook but need to have a conversation with the author to see what he is ok with. My main concern is, the original ebook (English) is now on audible and I don't want anyone to think I'm trying to compete with the platform. Must find a way to make it happen without getting myself in trouble! Cheers
What if the copyright claimant is dead?
Just like with everything else, it passes on to next of kin/whoever they left it to/their estate/etc. It doesn't magically go away. You're responsible for tracking the new copyright holder down.
Thank you so much. One more question for you... I am a new content creator- many big tarot/ oracle card channels show and use cards by deck creators and read the excerpts in the booklets that are included w/the deck. I also do this. Many have built very successful channels and are monetizing videos by doing this on UA-cam. Is this also a copyright issue? The whole niche may be in trouble
if that is the case. thoughts?@@KMRobinsonBooks
what about summarising or giving book review?
Also a violation. We did an episode on it but looks like that one hasn't been released yet.
A review or summary is not copyright infringement.
@@KMRobinsonBooks How can a summary or review be a violation when that's the entire business model of Goodreads and ppl leave summaries and reviews of books everyday on various sites including goodreads and Amazon?
@@franslam7398 a review is NOT a summary. At all. A review is specifically for readers to help other readers decide if a book is a good fit for the person reading the review. It's literally a "you'll like this book if you like xyz tropes/you don't like it if you're not a fan of xyz"
Here's a tutorial on the proper way to write book reviews: ua-cam.com/video/mYRW2XOeSK8/v-deo.html
Is this advice true for children’s stories as well?
Yes, ALL books no matter the size are copyright protected and can't be read in public without a performance license from the copyright holder. Keep in mind, with a novel, you'd likely be reading a few chapters...but a picture book would be the entire thing...so if you're violating the law with reading parts of a larger book, what happens if you're reading the entire book? Think of how bad that would hurt the author. All works are copyright protected, no matter the size ;)
I asked Penguin Random House if I could read The King of Kindergarten on my UA-cam channel. Their response was “no” . I haven’t contacted any other publishing company.
i FIND authors are hard to find to see if they're copyrighted. I would like to use an inspiring quote to my readers. If s/he is not findable. Can I use it if there is no reply? s/he may have died. or when I use it, s/he'll come out of the woodwork and sue the heck out of me. who can you trust? DMT

Can I read my own children's book on youtube?
Do you own the copyright? If you do, this isn’t a question, you own it and make the decisions. If you sold the copyright to a publisher, etc, you don’t own the copyright and you have to get permission from them.
Are animated book summaries also illegal?
Yes, don't ever use someone else's content without properly licensing it.
@@KMRobinsonBooks by licensing you mean mentioning the name of the book and the author? Of course I mention them. Forexample, atomic habits by james clear book summary, and i make an animated video about it.
No, that's not licensing. "Crediting" someone doesn't count for anything, it's still copyright infringement. Licensing is getting written documentation from copyright holder (and is almost always something you have to pay for) and anything else is copyright theft. If they prosecute you it can be up to hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines for you per infraction.
