ok, I kind of love "the sober one is currently on tour," kind of because it's totally inscrutable--to us. Obviously this is just conjecture but it really sounds like an inside joke this person had with close friends or family, and now etched into their memory is a little piece that only the ones closest to them get to have access to. It's okay if we don't get it, it's not *for* us. A graveyard is so public and we all get access to this part of a person's legacy, and I think it's really charming for someone to say "no, you don't get to understand everything about who I was, you never *knew* me. That part of me is only for the people I love." I really like that perspective, and I hope the people who get the joke got a good laugh out of it.

My great grandparents have "We put up a hell of a fight" on their tombstone. The thing is, no one knows why it says that. The cousins who ordered the tombstone didn't request it. We don't believe my great grandmother requested it (or if she did, she never told us). It's just there, on the back of the stone, almost hidden by grass. Very odd.

Waiting for Gertrude by Bill Richardson is a book based on the cemetery Pere Lechaise in Paris, where many famous artists and creatives are buried. The premise is all of the artists (Chopin, Jimmy Morrison, Oscar Wilde, Alice Toklas, Maria Callas, and more) are reincarnated as the feral cats who live there. Delightful, fun, and very macabre.

Ah you think whimsy is your ally? You merely adopted the cemetery. I was buried in it, mausoleumed by it.

my favorite epitaph is from my friend's uncle and aunt, who, when they die, will have a bench placed above their bodies with a plaque reading: "Have lunch on us!"

I don't often "like" videos, however, I did with this one because it was both light hearted and serious. Delightfully dancing between somber and silly. But also because of John's sweet display of core strength! 💪

Cemetary walks are the absolute best! My all time favorite was a grave which the family had come and decorated for Halloween. We're talking glittery spiders, spiderweds, and gel clings to look like bloody hands.

Hi John! Was reading Amy’s “Encyclopaedia of an ordinary life”, right after i read Auld Lang Syne the 5th time, when i got this notification. Just wanted to tell you, the whole time I was reading that book i could feel you narrating those little essays. I don’t know how this makes you feel but i’m sure Amy wouldn’t have it any other way :) Have a good day.

My favourite epitaph is one of 2Lt Hugh Langton, a soldier of the Great War. He is buried in a war cemetery in Belgium. He was a skilled violinist, and his epitaph is a short piece of music, a far cry from the “canned” First World War epitaphs.
