Like, Karlie Kloss seems to be reported as 6'2 (aka even taller than Jodi), is best friends with Jodi's role model Taylor Swift, and is currently married to Joshua Kushner, a business man and investor whose alma mater is Harvard Business School. CHILL JODI, YOU'RE JUST TALL.
Yesss like a quarter of the boys my class is 6ft and taller. Maybe we're just giants, but something tells me that it's just that movie is shitting on us. And yeah, they SPECIFICALLY HIRED ONLY SHORT PEOPLE TO MAKE HER SEEM TALL Like, the couldn't just get regular ppl to fill the school - she would be lost in the crowd of people of her height! Somewhere here they should've known it was not a good movie idea, but oh well.
I remember a season in America’s Next Top Model where a girl who was 5’7 was known as the “really short girl.” Like, really? I’m 4’11. She’s over half a foot taller than me.😂
Runway models typically have to be a certain height (~5'9) in order to minimize fitting time. Generally, fashion models are picked to suit the outfits (not the other way around)
Not for young kids. People only say "You should model" to tall girls who are exceptionally attractive. The rest of them just get pressured into joining the basketball team. LOL
Nah,, it’s usually the latter for me,, but I’ve been told I should be a model before. But that was because I’m skinny,, average and thicker tall girls would probably just be told to join basketball and volleyball 🗿
Yup there was a girl at my school exactly like Jodie tall blonde thin pretty definitely over 6 ft and everyone either thought she already was a model or suggested she be a model never made fun of her for it so yeah the ‘Tall Girl’ at my school was only seen as a model not nicknames like daddy long legs
I said it once when I was in middle school. But I was actually making fun of myself, as I am very short(5ft now, I was even shorter back then.) I said it to a person who was of a more average height.
Laura Well she is too tall for classical ballet. But she's a beautiful girl with a good body and tall so she could totally be a model. Imo first world problems but whatever.
When I was a kid, being tall was something to take pride in. If there was someone taller than me, it pushed me off because then I lost my title as the tallest.
Yeah like I wish I could be taller even though I’m taller than all but one of my closest friends and am 4-5 inches above average for women despite me not being an adult
It depends on how the heights run. Growing up, I was always third tallest, two other girls always went back and forth, but especially by late middle school and definitely high school the guys were typically taller than me still or at least close. No one really cared about height. Then I moved across country, where I'm by far the tallest girl in even a much bigger school, taller or as tall as most of the guys, and so much hate happened for it.
So true! I got so pissed when this girl came too school who was taller than me in fifth grade. Luckily the next week I was taller than her so, Problem solved lmao.
Thats what im saying.. if the movie is trying to point out the fact shes only one thats tall (6ft) then does that me the next tallest person is 5'11 (before stig came)
I go to a fucking all girls school and surprise surprise, there are maybe a dozen girls who are taller than 5’9, and two female teachers who are also around 6 ft. 😕
"You're the tall girl, you'll never be the pretty girl" Nicole Kidman, 5'11 Uma Thurman, 6' Maria Sharapova, 6'1 Gwendoline Christie, 6'3 If you have to be a bully, at least do it right.
I’m super okay with the concept of “person gets bullied for height”, because I know that’s a thing. But I just hate how two dimensional her character is. She’s tall. That’s literally it. Also, the line about the nikes is really in poor taste. If your shoe size is the biggest problem in your life, you need SOMETHING sis.
@Retriever Love how do you know it's fake? I'm tall and I'm getting bullied for this. This movie sucks, but at leats now some people realize that "tall" isn't all pros
Ik i tried to be like well its meant to be unique like her but in the end i hated it its like wtf they decided to put willowdean in at the end of dumplin
This girl, I don't want to minimize what she went through, but she wasn't bullied by peers for being tall, she was emotionally abused by an insane woman who held children who were already working harder than a child should to ludicrous standards
Mean kids will try to find anything they can to rile someone up, so I think, if they saw the show and saw how much it hurt her, then it's possible that they gave her hell for it. But yeah, usually no one's THAT bothered.
CallmeZ I’m like 90% sure Dance Moms is highly scripted. I mean, do you really think those girls and their parents would stick with Abby Lee Miller for all those years if she was that cruel to children?
gina vitis They had contracts locking them into six years of the show. Every child on that show has completely severed contact with Abby. Aside from the kids on the show now and Jojo Siwa, no one talks to her or about her.
No actually there's a thing a about being bullied for your height but you can't help it....small people just loves being in center of attention and talks about they height and get with all the boys because they is a "shorty"..that doesn't make em cute..
@@funnychic98 I'm ok...but I'm just saying people don't pay attention to tall girls and all the tall boys want the short girls...but I mean it's what they prefer
in my country im usually the tallest of the girls (there was always at least one boy that went past me). im 5'6", and while in USA its average here its super tall bc most ppl are like REALLY short. still no bullying for tallness even tho it hardly exists where i live
E. M. Rivera well dayum. Some people in my school consider 5’6 to be short because they are all so freaking tall. 5’4 is considered average height but let’s be honest, 5’4 is still pretty short. I think girls I would consider tall are girls 5’9 and above. But man, people must be really short where you live.
It’s so ironic that the biggest insecurity with real life tall girls seems to be dating, but that’s the only thing Jodie DOESN'T have an issue with in the movie because of her height. lmao
Me too, poor Ava, it's bad enough to feel insecure about your appearance, but having them be broadcast in front of a public audience has got to be rough for ANYONE to bear!😩💔
@@alternativeprincess7914 I believe that but I think it's pretty clear her mom was on the show 100% for fame. Like there are a few fights shes in that look clearly staged. Doesn't excuse anything Ava went through but still.
I know, that was my biggest gripe with this film. Jodi is treated like a mutant just for her height, when she's hardly a giant. They just hired actors who were of average height, or exaggerated the camera angle to make her look bigger than she actually was. 😤
Jodie: Being tall is horrible its the worst thing ever Me being tall: I mean, I can't find clothes that fit me and I bump into stuff but apart from that it's fine
THEY GAVE HER THE UGLIEST MOST UNFITTING CLOTHES I HAVE EVER SEEN! I thought it was just me not liking her preference but, actress's red carpet outfit looked amazing.
Tropical Orange I know right!Like why the heck is she wearing a janitor costume in the beginning of the movie?and why in the world does she wearing a flight attendent costume for her prom dress?!😂🤣
lmao ik and you can't even say that it's hard to find to get clothes that fit but she literally has money as you can clearly tell ugh I just love that everyone is tearing this movie
I mean, she's got long limbs, so the range of which she could just reach over and bitch slap a fool is that easy. Plus, a height like that is easily intimidating.
I watched the crappy movie and at the end he keeps the milk crate bc he knew he needed it because he claimed he "needed" it then puts the crate down then steps on it and kisses Jodie
the issue wasn’t her height it was that super tight slicked back pony tail that I wore when I was 13 when my hair was too greasy. they even got her a new hairstyle during her makeover scene and she put it back into that dang ponytail!!!
Tbh she could look like a model without that hairstyle, maybe a lil eyeliner.. I used to be insecure about my height and weight so I hid myself but then I realized I can wear maxi dresses and long jumpsuits and look cute af 😂
Satxn they probably did the ugly high ponytail to make her 1) look taller with an inch of pony tail lol 2) look less proportional by making her head look smaller, hence she looks a bit taller. I mean, they couldn’t be bothered to cast a girl that’s like 6’5+ (you know, actually noticeably tall for a woman so they gotta make it up as they go along)
@@rbartx1690 yeah but it doesn't make sense for the actual character, if she wanted to look shorter she would've done research and always worn horizontal stripes and created the illusion of a lower waist etc.
Kaylee Lovett yeah I’ve seen interviews with him and he is very much american and his accent in the movie doesn’t sound anything like ANY of the accents I’ve heard here in Sweden.

I don’t know about other high schools but in mine everyone is too depressed or simply don’t care enough to make fun of someone because of their height..
I think the funniest thing about the whole “you think your life is hard” monologue is that she’s goes to ruby bridges high school, and ruby bridges was the the first black girl to go to an all white school and she literally got death threats and had to be escorted to school to make sure she wasn’t assaulted...yikes
Yes! I made that connection, as well as just being placed in NOLA. NOLA has a long history with social issues from race to poverty. Funny, literally just realized how privileged Jodi is to live in a house like that in that area.
islahasnnothingtodo ok dang like chill being tall is actually difficult at times like sheesh maybe she didn’t have to be all like “beat that” but it can still be tough
This is so unrealistic. Like if someone bullies someone or something, they wouldn’t do it in public. And definitely no random person would look at it and start to laugh. They’d just ignore them and plug in their earpods. Nobody really cares enough these days
I got bullied out in the open and so did other kids. And everyone laughed because we were weird and ugly so it was okay to bully us. The majority of us have autism and other ND mental illnesses. So idk what you’re talking about.
@@SweetDreams-eq3ro i know so many girls and guys over 6ft and the fact there wasn't one guy or girl in her school that was 6ft was so confusing and dumb.

Skinny Legend when I was watching this movie I was waiting for Jodie to hit someone other than her sister cause no one in this movie seems to realize why it's a bad idea to pick on someone twice your size.
I had a friend in high school who was literally a fucking Amazon, tall and buff and she had dudes trailing after her. It was ridiculous enough that she joked about having them all stand in a circle around her as she walked to class to help clear a path
I'm 6'6. Can confirm that "how's the weather up there?" is a real thing that real people say. That said, it's more of a dad joke than an insult. Also that "Taller Swift" comment is extremely ironic considering that Taylor Swift is 5'10
The joke wasn’t about Taylor swift being tall it’s that Jodie was singing Taylor swift and so people said “you’re not close to Taylor swift you’re more like a taller swift” it was a stupid joke lmao
@@peytonsacapano3672 Yeah, my point is that it makes no sense that the main character is made fun of for being tall and wanting to be like Taylor Swift even though Taylor Swift is also tall
21:45 “Her best friend is just trying to dance and live her best life and all she does is complain about being tall” Let’s not forget that her best friend is BLACK. This strong queen faces actual discrimination every day of her life yet still somehow manages to find the beauty in life and be optimistic, while Jodi is constantly complaining about how her life is hell because of the small inconvenience of being tall. Yep, I'd say that it's worthy of that title, as they both set out with good intentions, but badly mangled their execution, and have characters who are MUCH more interesting than our protagonist (Veronica and Dan in "Sierra Burgess", Fareeda and Harper in "Tall Girl").
Me neither, they had a talented cast, but a mangled execution. However, I did like Jodi's family, and Jodi's dad using music as a way of showing her that he loves her unconditionally was an admittedly sweet gesture on his part. 😊🎹🎵
@@jessieqk12 idk she looks really skinny. plus when models are first hired that's probably when they make them stop eating or taking diet pills not before

That was EXACTLY my reaction as well, because Jodi isn't ABNORMALLY tall, they just surrounded her by smaller looking people to make her look more gigantic.
Yeah imo they should have made it like a girl with a disease that makes her abnormally tall 😂 then people with diseases that make them different can relate and tall girls can also relate.
@@qwomlee6058 she said "beat that" which kind of prompted competition. I don't think we should cause of course there's people out there who have been bullied for be tall but and she was teased("how's the weather up there?" honestly isn't that bad, it's mild teasing tbh but I get the insecurity) but to be like "I'm a white girl with no financial struggle religious or homophobic oppression, etc. whatsoever who's tall" and for her to to tell her black friend she doesn't understand is kinda iffy. Also, this is coming from someone who's also 5'8-5'9(I've been told different things) but also black and lgbt so I just have a few problems with how they did this. The most that's been said to me is "You're so tall so you should play basketball" and that was all from my family(mostly from my dad but whatever) but that's for other reasons so... @@randomalpaca1150 I thought it was 5 10, either way it's not like 6'0 is HUGE in comparison anyways this is coming from a girl that is under five feet tall.
Ava's bullying wasn't just from being tall, it was from being tall in the dance industry where all the girls are short and compact and can be lifted by partners in choreo. It's obviously difficult for her to do traditional partner work because the male is usually the one lifting the females, and for dance troupes or teams she would probably be cut for being too tall and not fitting in with the group. She also has a really long wingspan (like 6' 7" or smth ) and in dance engaging your shoulders is a big part of looking graceful so a lot of people (like Abby) mocked her for her long arms and said she didn't look good dancing or that she looked "scary" when it reality it's just a lot harder for a taller dancer to have control of their body. The bullying she faced came from the industry she's in, so maybe a regular girl in school isn't as likely to get bullied for her height, but there are definitely industries like dance where being tall is a constant struggle, so I think this movie could've succeeded as a dance movie since Ava obviously has the talent and personal experience to portray that on screen
you couldnt have put it in a better way, the writers of the movie are the problem, they didnt quite understand what exactly the struggles are, they just threw in a cliche high school drama linking it to being tall. The movie's poor quality doesnt have much to do with Ava, i personally loved her acting, but the movie storyline ruined it for her
TheMonkLegend27 I agree. There are many reasons why certain people won’t date a person: you’re black (I’ve dealt with this one), you’re too short, you’re loud, you have a specific religion that cancels out millions of men, etc. Like just find the people who don’t have an issue with it. Those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.
shreyal sharma you can’t judge people’s take on someone’s comment. In this case she’s insecure about her height. In the show, abby talks about it like it was a disability. Being told that as child could create a massive impact from the way your goals are set. This is a traumatic experience for her you can tell by how she’s constantly trying to persuade everyone to think that being tall is not a bad thing. “It’s not that hard” is not realistic. Your ability to understand her situation is poor. I hope you got enlightened from my response.
@@shreyalsharma4074 so its still bullying and it still can hurt her and make her insecure. and from what I know of abby wasnt the only person who bothered her bc of her height.
This could've worked as satire or if it was modeled on Ava's actual life e.g. follow a girl trying to get into showbiz who's bullied for her height. But hey, that's netflix for ya
yeah, like if they made it about a girl not being able to dance or something because everyone thinks she is too tall i woulda been like yeah, please, that works!
I feel like the idea behind the film was netflix going "ok, how can we make a moderately "feminist" film about body positivity while still having the main character being a tall, thin, white, blonde, straight girl searching for romance"
This movie has the worst role models in: Jodi: Never stands up for herself, Has no Personality, A massive wet wipe because 'How's the weather up there?' is not a hurtful insult. Dunkleman: Doesn't accept that his love for Jodi is unrequited, Says the worst pick up lines, Tells Steig not to date Jodi even though he seemed nice.

@I Love Musicals same, she really have potential to interpret a rounder character cause let me honest That character was flat like it main conflict was that she was too tall and that's it i don't see her motivations or dreams... that character only wants a boyfriend
Not tryna be rude but like AVA needs to get over it like ejdjkwjcujeje the amount of rage I feel is incredible likeee she got kicked off because her mother was trouble and she screwed uo her dance but her mother didn’t understand that went back and she had to hurt her feelings to kick her off finally for the third time
I’ve been liking Ava since Dance Moms I agree with you her acting was great but I hope we can see her play a character that’s well-rounded and well-written I am a tall teenage boy I get compliments about my height every single day I had my own insecurities about my height for years now so I can relate to Ava a little this movie had fall flat...
Nicol Forrest THATS WHAT IM SAYING ive literally only ever heard “how is it down there” not the other way around. There’s also when taller people stand above u and say “ohhhhhh i dont see anyone”
The fact that she literally says "I can't date a short guy it'd make me look weirder" or whatever made me scream cus it's totally sad and oppressive when guys won't date her cus she's tall but her not dating a short guy cus he's short is totally fine! And don't get me wrong she has no obligation to like Jack at all and his obsessive behaviour is definitely creepy but I just thought that line specifically was so ironic and tone deaf.
@ghostly Well I'm a raging lesbian so no I sure wouldn't but that has nothing to do with their height. My mom is significantly taller than my dad (who is the exact same height as me, 5'0") and throughout the years I've seen them get the occasional joke but it's literally never been any sort of big issue. And my step-brother is the same height as my dad and I and he has dated women taller than him without problems too. But even so I can still acknowledge that yes society does seem to have this weird obsession with men having to be taller than their girlfriends or else they look submissive or non-dominant and unmanly but I absolutely think that idea is complete BULLSHIT and I definitely don't condone women who buy into that shit. And the character here is a hypocrite for not understanding that when the whole story is literally about her being attacked because of her height.
Nhy R I think you’re failing to be compassionate to her perspective... much like the video maker. Being lanky (tall _and_ skinny) makes you stand out in a different way than being tall while of a thicker build. It’d be different if you had to face everyday in her body with her clothing options, especially as an adolescent, and being made to feel bad about your biology regularly. I’ve seen many videos and heard many podcasts where men vent about how crappy it is to be short and specifically how crappy dating is while short, and some have even said they wouldn’t want to date a girl too tall because they feel it would highlight their shortness, and the comment reception is always mostly empathetic and understanding. No men calling those short guys hypocrites for opening up about their insecurity as you’ll find women borderline attacking this girl for opening up about hers. I swear people are always ready to be meaner and colder to girls than guys as your comment, the video-maker’s comments, and most other comments here, demonstrate. Women really hold women and their fictional representatives accountable to a fault. Like, the way women and girls discuss and chastise the flawed female characters like our Rory Gilmores and Carrie Bradshaws is so noticeably different from the way men discuss and avoid chastising their Don Drapers and Tony Sopranos. People just have this much easier time hating women and a much harder time empathizing with women.
@@AddBowIfGirl Being short is seen as deficiency while being tall is seen as an asset. Shorter guy is seen as not good enough for the taller girl not vice versa. I get your point though. If you repeat something enough times to someone since their early childhood, it is only a matter of time until they start believing it themselves. Conditioning like that is very difficult to throw off. So, you are right that she does deserve more sympathy and understanding.
exactly. 6'2 girl here. I was so sick of getting judged because of my height, I refuse to judge guys by their's. My girls' dad was 4'11 when we started going out. He topped off at 5'2-5'3 (we were married for almost 10 years....long story). I hate it when people judge people off things they can't help or change. My husband loves tall girls...
I'm 180cm tall (which I think is 5'11) and I was insecure AF in school. 'Tall girl' may be a bad movie but being a tall girl is not an invented problem. Even if people don't bully you openly, you still perceive yourself as 'not normal' and it ruins your self-esteem. You feel awkward all the time. A teacher once said to us during history class: 'as we all know, small women are made for love, and tall women are made for work'. Feminism or body-positivity wasn't a big thing 15 years ago (at least where I live). A girl was supposed to be feminine and you can't feel feminine when you're bigger than all the guys, therefore, again, you feel 'not normal'. This led to me choosing partners solely based on how tall they are, which of course rarely resulted in healthy relationships. When I was 12, another teacher divided our class in two groups, and within each group you had to collectively come up with a two-word description for each person from the other group. The description I got can be roughly translated as 'lanky geek'. Another girl who was my height was a little more lucky and got 'a funny giraffe'. Oh, and a lot of people are saying tall girls shouldn't be defined by how tall they are. But the problem is, that's exactly how other people define them constantly. With all the 'you should be a model' and 'are you on the basketball team?' comments. Like these are the only things in life you're allowed to do. And then there were small things like not being able to find clothes or shoes that fit you. I have no problem shopping in the men's section now but as a teenager you are ashamed of that. So for years, I wore shoes in smaller sizes, and now my toes are deformed because of that. And it doesn't fully go away when you grow up, you just become smart enough to realize it doesn't matter. I sometimes wear heels, and almost every time I do someone will come up to me with 'You're already so tall, why do you need heels?'. I went on a Tinder date once, and the guy turned out to be a lot smaller than me. The evening was awkward, and we set down all the time. Afterwards I included my height in my Tinder description, and almost immediately stopped getting any matches. Another time, I was travelling with a group people, and there was a guy who just couldn't get over how tall I am. He kept mentioning it every day and one time he looked at my feet and was like 'Oh wow! Your feet are so large! I thought mine were big but yours are almost as big as mine, and you're a woman!' If you've made it this far - thank you for spending your time on this. A lot of us are struggling with accepting ourselves as valid, and I don't think it's a productive strategy to categorize those struggles as important and not important. Like, 'okay, you're fat but at least you don't experience racism' or 'you were bullied for being gay but be grateful you don't have disabilities'. It's probably a lot better now though, compared to when I was in school. I think modern teenagers, and the world generally, are a lot more accepting of other people.
Wow, I'm sorry you have been through all that. Some people, specially some guys can be trully jerks! Thank you for sharing your story, I hope this gets more likes so everyone can see it.
A way this movie could have worked is by showing that Jodie’s insecurities and depression (due to said insecurities) are making her feel and _think_ that people don’t like her because of her height. Like, sure, maybe a few people (like the main mean girl) could be shitty to her, but does literally _everyone_ have to be out to get Jodie? No. Because that just doesn’t happen in real life. Having Jodie progress over the movie, come to like herself as she is and realise that she _isn’t_ hated by everyone would be a nice commentary on how one or even two harsh comments can make a person feel seriously insecure for perhaps the rest of their life. But in Tall Girl, as it is now, it just comes off like Jodie is unanimously a freak until she has her ‘big speech’ at the end and changes everyone’s mind in two seconds. This movie has such weird direction...
Although another way they could have gone as well being more specific to the actress herself and her experience. Height can come way more into play with dancing and ice skating and sports that have to do with precise body movement. So it could talk about struggling with being tall in those sort of industries. Although honestly I much prefer yours and while the two ideas could be tied together as well as dance is so body centric and can make people extremely insecure over their bodies because of it. So there is my tangent but over all, this movie had potential and just completely screwed itself over.
That girl saying “you’re the tall girl, you’ll never be the pretty girl” is the most ironic thing since most models have to be above 5”10????

Yeah like I wish I could be taller even though I’m taller than all but one of my closest friends and am 4-5 inches above average for women despite me not being an adult
It depends on how the heights run. Growing up, I was always third tallest, two other girls always went back and forth, but especially by late middle school and definitely high school the guys were typically taller than me still or at least close. No one really cared about height. Then I moved across country, where I'm by far the tallest girl in even a much bigger school, taller or as tall as most of the guys, and so much hate happened for it.
Tall girl 2: Taller girl. Jodi must fight for her title as the tallest

That was EXACTLY my reaction as well, because Jodi isn't ABNORMALLY tall, they just surrounded her by smaller looking people to make her look more gigantic.

@@j.6845 WHAT THE FUCK WHY ARE Y'ALL SO TALL
The movie's poor quality doesnt have much to do with Ava, i personally loved her acting, but the movie storyline ruined it for her
manic hispanic men not wanting to date you because you're tall isn't bullying tho
TheMonkLegend27 I agree. There are many reasons why certain people won’t date a person: you’re black (I’ve dealt with this one), you’re too short, you’re loud, you have a specific religion that cancels out millions of men, etc. Like just find the people who don’t have an issue with it. Those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.
yes yes and yes.
@manic hispanic yes but most guys are taller than 6'1 like......
her life history is actually really sad, however the movie sucks.
nah she got bullied once by a grown-ass women who bullies everyone so like not that hard
shreyal sharma you can’t judge people’s take on someone’s comment.

Ahhh terrible a fat short woman how bad it’s like im lucky to still be on a show but ahhhh so terrible

Nhy R
I think you’re failing to be compassionate to her perspective... much like the video maker.
I've never dated a dude because I get really anxious and freak out, not because I'm tall for my age lmao why am I like this
@@AddBowIfGirl Being short is seen as deficiency while being tall is seen as an asset.
I thought mine were big but yours are almost as big as mine, and you're a woman!'
If you've made it this far - thank you for spending your time on this.
I think modern teenagers, and the world generally, are a lot more accepting of other people.
yeeess.
Wow, I'm sorry you have been through all that. Some people, specially some guys can be trully jerks!

Your sister is 6ft: She didn’t get bullied
But don’t forget Jodi is 6.1 .1 that’s a huge difference
Olivia Martin THANK YOU 👏🏾
I AGREE
The truth has been spoken
Although another way they could have gone as well being more specific to the actress herself and her experience. Height can come way more into play with dancing and ice skating and sports that have to do with precise body movement. So it could talk about struggling with being tall in those sort of industries. Although honestly I much prefer yours and while the two ideas could be tied together as well as dance is so body centric and can make people extremely insecure over their bodies because of it. So there is my tangent but over all, this movie had potential and just completely screwed itself over.
I totally agree but I just wanted to say, Jodie doesn't have depression she is really insecure and unhappy with her looks, that's different :)
