    A huge difference from the book is Lyssa suffers from serious depression and ptsd and her power doesn’t randomly cause cuts on her arm but rather she self harms as a way to deal with the pain. The books weren’t just “brooding” they were actually pretty dark at times. It would’ve made a really good tv show or Netflix show. But as a big fan of the books the movie was one of the worst adaptations I’ve ever seen.

      @yasminemixon5458 4 роки тому +36

      I thought the moroi were from different places around the world and they just come to school in America? Or are there multiple schools around the world? Idk, it's been a while since I've read the books

    • @yasminemixon5458
      @yasminemixon5458 4 роки тому +54

      They're not actually even american. Most of the moroi have russian or romanian accents(not accents, i meant to say last names) so it doesn't even make sense for them to have british accents

    • @alisonlilithharper
      @alisonlilithharper 4 роки тому +27

      yasmine mixon there are multiple schools around the world and the Moroi's accent depends on where they grew up. Yes, a large number of them are Russian and Romanian but those are mostly the royal families. Even so, what about the non-royal Moroi that were just born in America? Just because you have heritage from another country doesn't mean you speak its accent or I'd be speaking in an English accent with a bit of German thrown in because I'm largely English and German but I'm a Montana native, born and raised. Even if some of the Moroi have Russian and Romianian roots it doesn't mean they're going to have those accents. Dimitri has a Russian accent because he was born and raised in Russia and that's his mother tongue. Christian, Adrian, Lissa, Rose, Mason, Eddie, and all those guys were most likely born at the Moroi Royal Court which is in Pennsylvania but all of them except Adrian grew up at St. Vladimir's in Montana.

    • @ETphonehome813
      @ETphonehome813 4 роки тому +17

      The British accents annoyed me so much. I feel like they added it into the movie just to make it really overtly obvious that the Moroi royals are a higher social class than the dhampirs, who all seem to have American accents (with the obvious exception of Dimitri, and Spiridon for some reason). Because, ya know, posh British = rich and snobbish. I almost would have been okay with that even though it doesn't make sense since Lissa and Rose grew up together, but it's not even internally consistent within the film since Natalie also has an American accent. That may have been a way to show her as being a bit of a social outcast (like how Mia is American, since she's not an upper-class royal despite trying to fit in with that crowd), but she's still the daughter of a Prince. A Prince who just happens to speak with a British accent, and yet his daughter does not. That could be easily explained by Natalie having grown up in a boarding school in Montana, by why then does Lissa or any of her other classmates have an English accent? It just doesn't make sense if you spend any more than about 2 seconds thinking about it... The only other half-logical reason I can think of for the British accents is because the actors who play Lissa and Christian aren't American (she's Australian, he's English). Perhaps one or both of their American accents were too obviously fake, so rather than have them stand out they just decided to give all the Moroi overly posh English accents instead to cover it up. That's kind of a weird and lazy solution if that is the case, but I guess you do what you have to. What I CAN'T explain in any way that makes sense is the overly rigid and often archaic dialogue that the Moroi tend to have, particularly Lissa. What kind of 17 year old says, "How long have you been in crush with him?" Seriously? "In crush"?!? There's more like that, but that's the example that sticks in my head. They were probably trying to really emphasise the whole 'posh, secluded and otherworldly' upbringing, but why does Lissa still talk like that after spending so much time in the human world? Why doesn't Rose talk like that at all? And why tf do they still use telegrams as a means of communication when they've already established that iPhones exist in that world? Argh, this movie infuriates me so much!

    I LOVED the Vampire Academy books when I was younger but they turned it into such a horrible film... It was so childish and the actress who played Lissa just was... not good. The narration from Rose is so cheesy and unlikeable and gives major Mean Girls 2 flashbacks. They didn’t explain many of the vampiric universe terms very well. Rose and Lissa had zero chemistry. I didn’t even finish the movie tbh. What bothered me most was the fact that the actor who played Dmitri was and looked WAY TOO OLD to play him. Dmitri was like 21 in the books. The actor who played him didn’t even look remotely attractive, young, or dreamy like he’s described in the books. The fact that he looks so old compared to Rose makes their relationship so unrealistic, gross, and uncomfortable. It’s such a shame they did the books so dirty. Okay, rant over.

      While I agree that Dimitri's actor is older than what is canonical (I have to disagree about the "not being attractive" part tho, because _personally_ his actor is pretty hot out of the movie's context) their relationship still has that creepy age gap factor in the book. Rose is 17 at the start, and Dimitri is 24; that's 7 years. I don't know if you find that "creepy" or not, but it certainly isn't realistic (or, at least it shouldn't be), is uncomfortable, and kinda gross. I remember thinking that if ONLY they had given the movie a less cringy title than "vampire academy" it wouldn't had flopped. So pretty funny mythos thingy here: Traditionally in Balkans folklore, from which Dhampir are drawn, Dhampir are the descendents of a vampire having children with a human. You would think this might make them aligned with the vampires, enemies of humanity or whatever, but it's actually the opposite. In the Balkans lore, Dhampir are Vampire-Hunters, and pass their hunting traditions down from father-to-son. They're the source of inspiration for the character "Vampire Hunter D" and are pretty cool.
    Making a female Dhampir into a guardian character is interesting because it flips both the conventions about them on their head: that traditionally only male Dhampir inherit powers and that they use those powers to kill vampires. As for the Moroi/Strigoi thing, I'm not a big fan of "technically human but evil race" fantasy shit. It's creepy and always leads to eugenics arguments amongst fans.

      Do you mean Adrian? He was only 20 when they dated (and she was 18), and while he did tend to drink and sleep around a lot before then, he didn't take advantage of women. He was a notorious party boy and the women who hooked up with him were very aware of that fact and didn't tend to expect anything more of him (there's more detail about this in the Bloodlines series). Rose may have tried to change him, but only after he had convinced her that he genuinely had feelings for her and wanted a relationship, not just a fling (which she had originally assumed). I'm not saying that their relationship was without its issues or that either of them were saints, but I think both characters deserve a little credit.

    • @ETphonehome813
      @ETphonehome813 4 роки тому +3

      @@StupidUsername3838 I wasn't the biggest fan of Adrian when I first read the series but I appreciate him much more now that I've read the Bloodlines series, where he gets probably the best development/arc out of all the VA characters. "Jailbait" was definitely in poor taste, but I think it was actually quite fitting of his character - pretending to be the debauched individual everyone believes him to be while actually being genuinely caring and protective (which he certainly is with Jill, only ever treating her like a friend and a sister despite her crush on him).
      But as much as Adrian has grown on me, I still think Dimitri was the better choice for Rose. They had a much more positive influence on one another, with both of them wanting to be better people for both themselves and for each other. They still had a lot of issues and did a lot of things wrong, but they had enough respect for each other and themselves to work on it. Whereas Adrian had Rose on a pedestal, using her as his reason to make better choices in his life while never actually having the desire or the dedication to do it for his own sake. He WANTED her to change him, because he was too scared of the disappointment (from himself and others) if he tried to better himself on his own and then failed, which he believed that he would. This contributed to Rose having little respect for him as a person, as she, like many others (including Adrian himself), had consistently low expectations of him and his abilities. Adrian needed someone who would believe in him and then hold him accountable when he tried to take the easy way out, rather than dismissing it as "well, that's just Adrian", which is what everyone else does, including Rose. (This is something explored really well in the Bloodlines series, and Adrian finding that belief in himself and his abilities despite everyone's low expectations is really amazing to see unfold.)
      Sorry for the essay, this is just a topic I could literally talk about for hours. Also this is just my opinion, I’m in no way trying to argue against or invalidate yours. Plus, I may be a little (or a lot) bias, because I absolutely love Dimitri.

    I remember being hooked on this series and the spinoff and feeling so disappointed that they didn't put any effort into the movie. I don't remember if the books are actually good or if I just liked it because I was new to YA books, but I do know that I liked the spinoff (Bloodlines) better and thought it was more mature and the relationship (Adrian and Sydney) was a more grownup romance with a more nuanced conflict. I'd have to reread them and see if I have a different opinion, but this is what I remember thinking.
    Plus, I thought Dimitri/Rose and Lisa/Christian ships were so boring and I really didn't care about it. I remember thinking Rose and Dimitri's relationship was kinda...questionable to the point where I couldn't really get behind it. Christian was kind of interesting but at the end, I didn't really care or feel any spark. Rose and Lisa, on the other hand, had a great relationship and I loved seeing that develop. That, I think is what makes the series worth reading. Not really the romance.

    This my long rambling rant... you have been warned. Lol
    *SPOILERS*
    I’m a grown woman and I loved the book series; both TVA and Bloodlines. I was excited for the movie, but held back some expectations due it being a movie and the trailers didn’t do much to soothe my doubts.
    After watching the movie with one of my friends who loved the book series, we both felt like we watched a train wreck; where you don’t want to watch anymore, but need to keep watching.
    The only thing the movie got 99% perfect, was Dimitri. The 1% was the ending when Dimitri was okay with one kiss with Rose; completely against his character because he was so adamant about the age difference being wrong while she’s in school, despite his attraction to her.
    Acting wise, it was good. Script wise, it was a mess and took a lot away from the world building and characters.
    For example, the school never had uniforms. I felt this was the author’s way of showing the different characters’ personality traits and their home lives. Lissa was royalty, but liked wearing clothes from Target because she wasn’t that much into her entitled wealth. Mia was poor, but wanted to be seen as a wealthy girl; Lissa and Rose were quick to notice her knockoff high quality brands, which shows Mia obsession with being popular.
    Rose’s personality is sort of spot on, but the movie sadly traded her trust issues in exchange for plot convenience; when she tells Natalie about her crush on Dimitri. This was something that Rose wouldn’t even tell Lissa because she feels that her person life is second to Lissa’s.
    Then there’s the ending. Rose kills Strigoi Natalie. This never happened in the books because she wasn’t ready mentally to kill someone she knew who turned evil. It was important to her development. I get the movie thought it was a good idea because it shows how awesome Rose is, but it rushes her skills. Rose was egotistical and was just tapped into through that by the end of the book. So rushed. Plus, it takes away the significance of the marks on her neck that she earned in the second book. The production crew wanted a second movie, they should have stuck with Rose not killing Natalie from the books to make her first Strigoi kill more earned and significant
    Lissa speech at the end of the movie, yah, that was hard to sit through. Can’t remember what she did in the books, but I know it wasn’t anything like that. For the movie, if Lissa was going to interrupt the Queen, she would have done it more gracefully and not sarcastically.
    I feel like this movie just took the fun from the books and amplified so much that it came off too strong and unnecessary.
    For the climax parts of the third act, it was okay. I just didn’t like how Daddy Dashkov was able to pull off everything; though to be fair, it was only with one thing which was Rose admitting she had a crush on Dimitri. It took away from how cunning and clever Dashkov was. He could tell there was an attraction between Rose and Dimitri just by carefully paying attention to them; which is why Rose is more shocked by what he tells her about the charmed necklace and how it worked better than planned because of Dimitri’s attraction. In the movie it just comes off as stale because of Rose’s confession.
    Okay, my long rant is over. I could complain more, but meh. Once I fix my computer, I’m prolly going to put the audiobooks for TVA and Bloodlines on my phone to listen to while walking. Lol.
    It’s a good series. If you listen to the audiobooks, the first two narrators are okay (1-3). But book 4 is narrated by Emily Shaffer and she’s pretty good; also continues to narrate the rest of the series, including Bloodlines.

    I haven’t read these books since middle school, but as far as I can remember, Rosa ends up with Dimitri in the sequels?? Which at the time I thought was hot, but now it’s definitely weird because it’s definitely meant to be read as a student-teacher relationship.

      Nearly, she's 18 by the end of the third book, by which time he's 25. But if it makes you feel any better, he's technically not her teacher. Mentor, yes, but not a formal teacher. So it's a little bit more like a relationship with a coach or a tutor than an actual teacher. Still not totally ethical or without issues, but not quite as bad as a student-teacher relationship, at least in my opinion.

      @@ejt7642 Also, the movie makes Dimitri look really creepy, I probably sound like a fan girl, but they some genuine connections and chemistry in the first book, If they had never been the subject of the lust charm, I honestly doubt Dimitri would have made any moves on rose while she was a minor, even saying to her towards the end of the book "You need to report what happened". Plus Rose seems so much more mature in the books than she does in the film, watching their relationship in the film made me cringe

    Danila Kozlovsky (one of the main guys) is a REALLY big figure and a REALLY popular and scandalous actor in Russia. He has as many fans as he has haters. His films are sponsored by government, both in which he is an actor and a director. So, yeah, the cast is pretty big. But Kozlovsky espesially is a very controversial person, taking part in projects with shady creation process...

    oh my god, I was a huge fan of the books when they were coming out, and I was SO pissed about the movie. you were right about the tone thing- it's much more serious and angsty, especially as the series goes on. the books do make more sense, but from what i remember (which honestly isn't much) it was always pretty overwhelming and there were like 5 different plots happening at the same time. i basically rage quit around the 4th or 5th book because it was just going in a direction i didn't like. but that being said, yeah, i would say this series was a better one than most vampire/supernatural ya books at the time. but i was also like 13/14 when i read them, so.

    I honestly like this movie lol, but that said I'm just a fan of the books so I guess I'm only happy Richelle Mead got her cash and the cast looked pretty great for the characters they were portraying. That said they did mess up the tone (the first book is very sarcastic but not outright comedic) and is more of a mystery, and ended up making a kind of dumb popcorn movie instead of the epic adaptation it could've had.
    THAT SAID the soundtrack for this movie fucking SLAPS and playing Rats by Rainy Milo at the end was an iconic choice

    hello i'm two years late but this was one of my favourite books series and i just knew it wasn't going to do well. one of the worst things that happened was the fact that they white-washed rose. Canonically, Rose is half white and half turkish, as well as being short and curvy. its an important part of her character- the moroi sexualize and devalue her further because of this, especially when comparing her to Lissa. She constantly struggles with her want to let loose and party, and other people's low expectations and slut shaming in the first few books, and how she learns to deal with it comes hand in hand with her growth as a character.

    LMFAO I worked on this film for 2 months as a specialist action artist (similar to a stunt performer but less trained and skilled). One thing I can tell you is that Zoey Deutsch is a freaking nightmare, she was so so mean. The stunt performers found her so rude to train, she even got her stunt double removed from the production for being too "fat". She refused to eat on set and almost fainted during training. She's the only actress I've ever worked with that's truly mean. To this day I can't watch films she's in. Sarah Hyland was lovely though, she was the biggest star on set but was so humble and kind.

I know it’s mostly nostalgia, since it was one of my first book series (Ender’s Game, Beautiful Creatures, Vampire Academy are the 3 major book series that I read first) and holds many of my fondest memories of middle school. I was so pissed it was adapted so badly because it gave me such perspective and curiosity, I’ve never really felt that from any other books because it was one of my first ones.

    This movie will forever be one of the biggest disappointments of my life. The books did an amazing job of setting up great magic systems, political systems, and social systems, and staying true to them. Rose and Dimitri were one of the greatest and most epic love stories of my entire childhood. Lissa gave me hope for recovery as someone still actively struggling with self harm. Even the spinoff series was well written, intelligent, and unafraid of confronting harsh and difficult realities. To take all that ^ and get THIS MOVIE??????? My disappointment and anger are endless.

    Have not finished the video but on Dimitri and Rose's ages-I just looked it up on the wiki to confirm and in the first book she is 17 and he is 24. So yeah the age difference is really icky. There's kind of a whole weird forbidden love thing because like, dhampirs aren't supposed to date each other and also he is Seven Years Older Than Her. Damn like I'm 22 and I would NEVER date a 17 year old. I would not register a 17 year old as remotely attractive. I think they did make her 18 for the movie which...doesn't really make it better but. Idk.
    I remember being really annoyed by a lot of the casting decisions of this movie when I was first hearing about it. In the books, Rose is half-Turkish so she kind of has this ~exotic~ vibe that gets kinda fetishized by all the Moroi boys (particularly since she's also curvier than most of the Moroi girls apparently...but like in a curves in all the right places kind of way) so it was kind of a letdown when they cast a petite white brunette to play her. Not that I want there to be more stories about people being exoticized on the basis of their ethnicity and body type, but. They could have at least included her ethnicity, right? It's kind of a moot point because this movie is so all-around bad anyways, though. Also to be fair her being Turkish might have been an excuse to have an ~exotic protagonist on the part of the author without having to like, write her as Turkish in any way...kind of like how the main character of Marked is constantly mentioned as being part Cherokee and therefore super mystical and exotic (but still pale-skinned). It's been so long since I've read the books that I don't wanna jump the gun on that front though. Long story short, good video!

    as someone who read the entire series and enjoyed it, you hit the nail on the had on the problems I had with the movie. it was so clearly made by people who didn't respect the genre or its audience. it was dumbed down to painful levels and the tone they tried to go for didn't really suit the material.
    btw, while I enjoyed Vampire Academy, the spin-off series, Bloodlines, was a lot more interesting imo, and it's one of my all time favorites.
