My 2023 Bear Tag didn't specify a Zone. I was Deer hunting in D Zone, so hoped to get a Bear there (No Luck). With a tag, can I hunt Bear anywhere in CA? Even in the Premium X Zones?
That is the absolutely wrong way to look at the assault on hunting. If the numbers support it we should absolutely have a Spring season. We must constantly be pushing for more not trying to defend the little we have left. Do not be intimidated by the anti-hunting cabal. You will lose at that game if all you do is try and defend. You must justify why this is an essential part of game(I use that word intentionally) management.
I bear hunted a bit this year 7,000 ft outside Lake Tahoe basin. I hunted yesterday and today. I haven’t seen one yet.... it’s mid November now. I want to understand their diet and keep an eye out for them. We can hunt them this year here until mid December.
Great talk gents. I learned a lot and will listen again. I'm surprised there aren't 1000s more commenting. I've carried a bear tag for years but never purposely hunted them nor really carried to. THEN 10 years ago, we both rounded a canyon wall. Face to face at 20 feet was the most majestic and powerful 200 lbs animal I've ever seen. He decided I was the ugliest creature he'd ever seen so he turned to run away. Fortunately I was at port arms and hit him broadside as he turned. Once my heart and nerves settled down, my next thought was "what the hell do I do with the guy"? I butchered him bad when I butchered him. Today when I hunt, rifle or archery, I hunt for bears and hope to see a deer. My second bear was a 45 yard archery shot. He looked BIG but turned out to be 85 lbs. Fluffed up hair can be deceiving. Thanks again
Cubs and younger Bears seem to have a large looking ears .A large bear ,the skull will make their ears look small ,at least in my opinion in my experience.
@Napa Paul 20 feet from a good sized black bear definitely gets heart and adrenalin going.west of Yreka Ca.,the hills above Ft.Jones is loaded with black, and cinnamon varient of black bears.
Excellent podcast. It confirms a lot of my suspicions about bears in California. This is my second year of purchasing a very expensive non resident tag. Last year I was unsuccessful, and this year I have three days of effort for some old dried up scat. I haven't been able to find the food so far this year, thus I haven't found the bears.
Take interstate 5 north.i live in e.bay,it's been a few years , but go to town of Yreka.not far from Oregon border.west of i.5 exit Yreka, west to Fort jones, follow scott creek. I shot a bear in 2020 and the department of wildlife extracted its molar and told me that they would send me the history of the bear I shot. Never did hear from anyone and I can’t seem to get a hold of anyone to find out this information (we be kinda cool to have the history of the bear next to my picture.
I live were there are trash bears. And i only had my trash raided 1 times in little less than 10 years now… Y or how is that possible? Simple most if not everyone that lives or owns land in the mountains were bears live own or have at least 1 dog. Just popper scoop ur dogs poop and bag it up set it ontop of the trash can wen u take it out to the curb for trash day pickup each week…. And u will never to pickup ur trash off the ground agin
i call bs on the 30,000. you could double that. fish and game doesn't have a clue. modoc county is where they are dumping all the problem bears. should be a season there.

How much are out of state cali bear tags???
Reason I ask is it’s 50 bucks for resident tags
I think my non resident tag was 300$

Yes I have, good success in the past. Nothing yet this year.

Cdfw website has the answer to your question they post all the bear ages online with your license number or tag number next to the bears age
I was told that and looked for myself but couldn't find it maybe it wasn't posted at that time. But I'll try again . Thanks

Thank you for this.
You guys are awesome, thank you!
Baiting would allow time to spot cubs as well
Awesome thanks for the info!

Why doesn’t California have a spring bear season?
Because the bears are right out in plain sight !
