In general I love how this seems like a commercial where they left the outtakes in. Like they said “cut” and everyone breaks character, but they left that in too.
One mistake I made while translating this video is, especially since my channel is known for its explanations and analysis -- I failed to self-insert into the shoes of someone who doesn't understand Japanese. This video is 100% absurdism. You're not missing anything. I gave you all the information you need to be at the level to understand the humour. There's nothing more to it. I got long Discord messages asking me how the Katakana words with the bar vowel extension could possibly be confused with eachother -- there is no way they would ever be confused for eachother. That's the joke.
It makes me think of a futuristic setting where you have cute androids running a shop but constantly mistaking the voice inputs of the clientele, still adorable :p
The joke is based on this confusion. Meta-joke mixing the words spelled the same even sounding different, using the products of Mouse with the customer. Based on a antique word-game following the last particle or the last formed word with a new one. The second one is "inverted sarcasm", used a lot on manzai duos or even kabuki ones too. Called inverted because the "absurdism" of following a different path before lead the second one joke.
Oh yes, and after the inverted sarcasm comes the classic tsukkomi/boke humour, used a lot in manzai too. Classic form of japanese humour with some back and forth used on stages (repeat after me with Asuka to second guy and this guy with Maiyan).
Thanks - this made my day. Been a fan of these Nogizaka46/Mouse vids since they appeared on UA-cam. You're right, easy enough to figure out what's going on, but thanks very much for filling in the gaps with translation!
That's how I found them through the Mouse commercial videos on UA-cam. Especially Shiraishi Mai who graduated from the group at the end of 2020. She has a UA-cam channel as well since August last year. Shiraishi Mai was my favourite member of Nogizaka46 & I'm subbed to her UA-cam channel. :)
As you point out in the pinned comment, this video is absolute absurdity. But it builds on the popular format of 'manzai' where one person plays the 'tsukkomi' (straight man) and the other(s) play the 'boke' (fool). It plays off of the absolute absurdity of actions / statements of the 'boke' whereby the audience sides with the 'tsukkomi' who usually attempts (and ultimately fails to) reestablish some kind of normal interaction / situation. I'm going to show this to my Japanese 101 class lmfao

This is an overtly silly commercial banking on the cuteness of the two idol girls and the comedic silliness of the comedy duo. It is so crazy and cute it is hilarious. I've been addicted to Mouse Diner for a couple of years. Thanks for translating - the delightful acting really got the message across even without the translation, but thanks! Having watched several comedies - TV series and movies - from Japan, I can confirm: Our Japanese friends are funny.
This guys a good actor. It's very difficult to do a schtick like this and come across as genuinely reacting to stuff you already kniwnis going to happen.

I live in Japan now and I used to see this company on UA-cam ads here with the same actresses. But they were like 5 seconds and gave no context at all so I had no idea what they were selling. Now I finally get it. Thank you!
He could've made this all a lot easier by asking for the coffee and toast while the other guy was there... or just saying "I'd like to order the same, please". :D
I see the jokes are just play on words or puns but with the "waitresses" being the boke while the White shirt man is the Tsukkomi. Really the funniest parts are when they break down from their ad lib so at the end the ad puts a smile on your face
Thank you for explaining this - Japanese comedy has so many nuances to it, its hard sometimes for westerners to pick them all up. You must be busy - when possible can you do the other Mouse Diner video with Sissonne and Nogizaka46? It seems like more laughs and more innuendo. Otsukare :)
Not really that hard...same for all cultures, once you understand the culture a bit you can understand the humour. People from outside the West struggle with YOUR humour, so don't act like Japanese humour is special or the hardest to understand

These are great they just seem like they learnt their lines then filmed in one take, but you can tell everyone is having so much fun
