And that's "fine"! Haha. They are "serious" "straight-laced" guys. I... can't think of anything nice to say. Look, they look like they would eat cheese beef bowl, ok?" So, it's a bit hard to convey the condescending way he is using the word "serious" here, but basically he is trying to imply "virgin" or "incel". This connotation is a lot more common in Japanese than in English. Even still. obviously he was dissatisfied with how indirect he was being because he doubled down with the cheese beef bowl comment. Not for nothing, contextually he was literally talking about players of the Sega game puyopuyo. It'd be like if the lead developer of Fortnite was on a stream and was asked "Hey, what do you think of Ninja?", and the response was "Ummm... Well then. I kinda thought his resignation statement sounded off for some reason. He can be divisive figure at times. I don't agree with everything he's said, but that certainly feels like one of the more mild things he's gotten in trouble for saying. Regardless, there's no denying his talent as a developer and the amazing things he's done for the Yakuza franchise and consequently Sega. Sega found new relevancy (especially overseas) through Yakuza. I also believe it was his idea to tap Christian Whitehead/Headcannon to make Sonic Mania. He brought Sega back to life, when their reputation was at it's lowest. And they just let him go over using what is essentially the Japanese equivalent of the neckbeard, fedora wearing, "m'lady" meme? Sure, he shouldn't be publicly making fun of fans as the face of a company, but he never censors himself and it's that attitude that led him to most of his career achievements.
He apologized but even though his words are an actual apology his attitude is completely unapologetic, like he is talking about the weather and not giving a heartfelt apology. Also, with a face that looks like a balloon just before bursting it's absurd he thinks himself fancy enough to make fun of other people because of their face.
The crazy thing is that I can see a lot of foreigners who were unfamiliar with this would instantly buy cheese gyuudon when they can. I see a lot of people from different ethnicities buy that in Singapore at least...
It's probably their way of saying sellouts, or people who sell out or dedicate to someone or something outside of Japanese society. That's my guess, they become a stereotype I guess, which in irony... You can work out the rest.
Important: the gamer who was the target of this guy's insult later posted a pic of himself eating a cheese gyudon. 10/10 for style. I tried it once but wasn't super impressed. That said, soft boiled egg on gyudon is the bomb.
Not gonna lie, before you explained the meme. THAT ORDER SOUNDED DELICIOUS. I wonder if its because cheese makes the order childish or something? Either way, I'd try it 🤣

So the thumbnail clearly indicates he was fired for what he said, yet the video spends all of one second pointing out that he left the company and nobody knows if it was related to this. C'mon.
If you're the one being made fun of, it's fine to embrace the joke. If you're talking about a community that supports you, you're likely better off giving them the benefit of the doubt.
"Why do you discriminate the ones eat cheese gyuudon!? I love cheese gyuudon too, and you shouldn't have those stereotype....." Until I saw the photo, Why do you put my photo?

I’m always ordering cheese gyuudon at the Sukiya next home, and I didn’t know about this bad connotation…. Anyway I will keep on ordering it, tastes so good ^^
I heard about this back when it happened, but I didn't understand the full meaning back then... thanks for the explanation! xD Some stuff to think about. First, I highly doubt Nagoshi-san got out of Sega because of that incident... like a few other famous game figures, he probably just got a way better offer from the Chinese developer and decided it was finally time to go. It's also, you know, Sega. The company hasn't been doing super great in a while now. He's been languishing a while with the Yakuza franchise there, perhaps he just thought it was time to try something new. He also didn't leave Sega for NetEase directly... he got out of Sega with a few other devs, established his own studio called Nagoshi Studio, which is now a subsidiary of NetEase. So it's a bit more like Kojima. Another thing to note.... even though he's the Yakuza director and creator and all that, funny enough, there are almost no controversies directly involving him. xD But the guy weathered some deep crap through his career and life. The life part you can look for articles or his Wikipedia entry, but on games themselves, it wasn't about him, but former colleagues said waaaaaay more controversial things in the past, and then he had to deal with the whole Judgement Pierre Taki fracas not that long ago. Remember that? Second thing to think about - I think people get incensed about this more because of where it's coming from, and less because of the meme itself... because Nagoshi-san has this bad boy image, I guess it must feel more insulting for nerds and chi-gyuu to be called that by someone like him. But it's kinda funny that, at least as far as it seems, you kinda need to be a bit of a nerd yourself to understand and use the term. Isn't that the case? Or did chi-gyuu reach the mainstream lexicon in Japan already, kinda like otaku? One way or another, we're talking about a game development director who dresses as his girlfriend tells him to (not me saying that, he said this in interviews). xD Deep down, he's a bit of a chi-gyuu himself, at least when compared to "regular people". :P Final thing... well, it's just a new derogatory term for insecure nerds, right? Since otaku became mainstream and stopped being a term overtly used to demean or offend others, something new had to come by. xD People are comparing it to soyboy or other terms like that, but it's just not as loaded with politics. The extreme version for westerners is likely incel, but again, it also does not carry the ideological and political load. For me at least it feels more like calling someone a kinda insecure momma's boy nerd or something like that.
hopefully we can order a cheese beef bowl in the next yakuza game

Funny thing is Nagoshi's just about the last person who should be criticizing other people's looks. My man looks like he eats silicon gyuudon everyday.
I'm a lookalike of Chee-Gyuu boy. I'm living in Japan for over 50 years but never heard of Chee-Gyuu. Thank you everyone for worrying about me!
I know a person that looks exactly like chee-gyuu
he works harder than any person I know
Doesn't Sukiya sell it?
@@Lion....... you sound very prejudiced against my fellow cheese-loving Americans and their burgers that contain cheese and beef at the same time. Are you perhaps lactose intolerant?
New words and expressions appear all the time, a language is never frozen. Btw those new words and expressions are used by young people so if you're like in your 70s (I assume you moved in Japan in your 20s but I could be wrong ofc), you certainly don't hang out with young people very often which would explain why you never heard about it.

Nah, you gotta be a super chi-gyuu and get the Beef Rib 3 cheese bowl. Much better than the standard 3 cheese.
That store is disgusting.
Sukiya is mid at best.
Kinda bummed me out to learn about this cuz I love cheese gyudon a lot especially with kimchi. But maybe I'm just a true blood chigyuu at heart LOL
For anyone interested. Definitely check out what Nagoshi the Ex-Sega Director looked like before - back when he created Monkey Ball, prior to when he started hanging out with Yakuza and making those Yakuza games. It's insane.

There are pictures of Nagoshi when he was developing Super Monkey Ball all over the Internet, but back then he had a cheese Gyudon face. Perhaps it is a kind of complex. It wasn't until after he established RGG studio that Nagoshi changed to his current Yakuza fashion.

Honestly, the best Don on sukiya
Netease offered him a TON of money. It was probably a coincidence honestly but still interesting regardless
I think this is the equivalent of a person "eating steak well-done with ketchup", "drinking their coffee so white it's basically all milk" or "with taste buds of a 5 year old that won't eat or even look at anything that's not chicken nuggets"
I think it's more the Virgin Walk - something made to make introverted nerds worry about something trivial.
I like milk coffee.
@@Empyrean_Enigma livers are gross.
@@supermansdaddy7019 Yeah, none of it beyond the name has anything to do with taste. But there's also nothing wrong with eating steak with ketchup or drinking coffee with lots of milk, anyway...
I like milk in my coffee. Otherwise, it’s too acidic for almost any medication.
Oh I see so he's basically calling people virgins, wizards, cuck etc.
If anyone cares about the part that isn't subtitled at around 3:28, he basically answers: "Uh right... they uh.... they look like "straightforward".. uh... "hardworking" guys.. right? And that's "fine"! Haha. They are "serious" "straight-laced" guys. I... can't think of anything nice to say. Look, they look like they would eat cheese beef bowl, ok?"
So, it's a bit hard to convey the condescending way he is using the word "serious" here, but basically he is trying to imply "virgin" or "incel".
I dunno... haha... he looks like he spends a lot of time in his mom's basement if you know what I mean."

Seems like the Japanese equivalent to the Virgin from the Virgin vs. Chad meme.
So a Chi-Gyuu is a Japanese soy boy?
No. It's the Japanese Beta I think. The anti-Chad. They're harmless, just trying to live their lives. Soyboys on the other hand...sheesh. Horrible creatures.
I guess
That would be the closest analogy to a word in English, yes, but there's a bit more nuance to it. But you could argue that it is correct.
@@deathmorphosis would nerd also work?
@@Nerdotomy No, not that. Another synonym for チー牛 is 陰キャ which is someone that is just very plain and pitiful.

It's a shame he got demoted, that seemed like a really good apology. I'm also not clear if he was fired because the phrase is considered offensive, or because he was being rude to Sega's own customers. Like if Gabe Newell said that most steam users are neckbeards?

In Japan the accepted unspoken rule is that NO ONE ever shits on anyone else, EVER, costumer or not, so when it happens they go hard on it

The thing I really love about your videos, is not just the comedy, you have a great way of presenting this information and you do a fantastic job of staying on point But also sprinkling in bits of comedy as well and setting things up just at the right time to kind of get these humorous points across.
The other thing I really like about your videos is that it really exposes Japanese culture more fully.
I don't know I think in the west a lot of us have a tendency to sort of romanticize Japanese culture of course with video games and anime and pokémon and all these kinds of things and with all that we create this sort of idealized picture in our head of what Japan is, but your videos really open it up and show that Japan is honestly no different than we are and they have a lot of silly crap that they obsess over and it just makes for a more well-rounded image of Japanese culture and society.

@@KasumiRINA Wikipedia will explain it way better than me. It comes from a region in the Bohemian empire that spoke german and was located in a valley.

The description they use for a uncool person looks like the youtuber Daniel Lord of the channel Hiding in my room.
I heard about this back when it happened, but I didn't understand the full meaning back then... thanks for the explanation! xD
Some stuff to think about.
Final thing... well, it's just a new derogatory term for insecure nerds, right? Since otaku became mainstream and stopped being a term overtly used to demean or offend others, something new had to come by. xD People are comparing it to soyboy or other terms like that, but it's just not as loaded with politics. The extreme version for westerners is likely incel, but again, it also does not carry the ideological and political load. For me at least it feels more like calling someone a kinda insecure momma's boy nerd or something like that.
These videos are so interesting!
Meanwhile, since I got to Japan I’ve gotten cheese gyuudon several times just because I thought it was good… lol
