Transforming a Nail Into Scissors

- In this video I take a high carbon steel railroad spike and forge it into a beautiful and functional pair of scissors! Making scissors is something Ive always wanted to try and do and im so happy with how they came out. I got them to about 51-52 Rockwell C which was pretty good for this type of steel. The induction forge worked great on this project, see some links below on where to get one of your own!

Great job. Normally scissors have curved blades to stay in contact along the whole stroke. You clearly made them sufficiently accurately to not need this. Good job!
I thought the thumbnail was a joke or come on, but you actually made working scissors. I'm impressed. Really accentuates utility of the induction forge for small parts & finesse work.
Nice work, nice shop, nice video...just nice!
Make sure they are not too hot before picking them up 😀. Seriously Chris you did a fantastic job on those scissors. 👍
Hahah! im extra careful in the blacksmith arena these days! Thanks for watching!
Crazy-good Chris! So awesome.
Thanks for taking me back in time again. Sitting next to pawpaw's fire watching him re purpose something metal & turning it into something new
This look incredible!
Very nice job well done. Stay safe God bless. 🇨🇦✌️
Incredible work on this!
Thanks John!
Very nicely done. I may try doing this when I do public demonstrations
At a fun project!
Great video as you learn , we learn .
Fantastic build. They came out great!!!
Great job Chris! Definitely need to give yourself credit because making scissors is HARD. They look great and they WORK!
Excellent! I have enjoyed watching your videos. I think this project was not only challenging but, showcased your creativity and talent.
Bob
Great job!👍
Great teaser video on IG. It got me here!
Nice work
Nice job, A job well done
Monumental build, so many critical tolerances at play in scissors
Really cool seeing the whole process.
For your first forge you did great they look awesome and they cut. That’s a win thanks for sharing! That was great content
O U T S T A N D I N G well done.
Thank you so much!
Great video , thanks !!
I havent watched to the end but I believe scissorblades have a bow in them at least all scissors I have encountered you can see through from the top when they are closed so that its a tighter closing "point" where the blades intersect.
Edit: but I'm glad they work well
I concur. Having sold high end scissors for a number of years, I can say that the blades should curve inward a bit. This curve ensures that the blades are always tight when they meet.
Still, it was neat to see the induction forge in use.
Impressive!

A very delicate design, yet strong and functional, with perfect fit to your hand. If you want to help old folks like me with arthritis, a good design for toenail cutters is possible with your new-found skills. I find commercial cutters very awkward to hold, they slip out of my hand, but the _"scissor finger grips"_ would be ideal, and they have the leverage for the task.
Ambitious project for a novice smith! Well done man.
Thank you! If I’m gonna try something I wanna try something difficult!!!
I saw some other older machines that was in PawPaw's Shop..like that small belt sander
So happy to see a new Blacksmithig video. But always good to see a new video for you Chris. That's really cool project Chris. That's very unique and very clean design. Chris awesome Job on those. Hopefully you get great use out of them for many years to come my friend. Can't wait to see more videos soon Chris. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Forge On. Fab On. Weld On. Keep Making. Don't Die. God Bless.
Sure makes knives look easy to make in comparrison. It is understandable why high end scissors cost so much.
Wow, this was amazing to see these scissors ✂️ come to life. Great job Friend!
Thanks Lindsay!!
So impressed and appreciative of the process, design, and outcome. My mom was an extraordinary seamstress and a pair of scissors like yours would’ve been an amazing gift. Huge fan of everything you make and share with us!
What a fantastic build! Nice work!
Dude that came out awesome! I don't think I could pull that off nearly as well as you did, everything has to be just right on a pair of scissors
That is absolutely amazing 🤩
Your channel is great! I’ve been watching multiple videos a day since I found it on Thursday. Keep up the great work.
Amazing!!
Nice work, this looks like a really intimidating project because it puts so many elements together. I also like that it’s really functional piece that you can use every day and not just a bottle opener or something strictly ornamental.
Awesome, job. Such a cool project. And great job explaining the process.
Thank you for watching!
Love it
This is a very entertainng and informative video, thumbs up and I subscribed .cheers !
Great video, well explained. What an incredible project. Such a high level of difficulty. I could never wrap my head around scissors. You did such a great job. Such unique tools too. Mahalo for sharing! : )
Sweet project and very well executed! I haven't done much metalworking. The closest I have gotten is modifying crap old PC cases to fit hardware they weren't intended for. Even that was a pain so I have a lot of respect for you being able to pull off what, (to a layperson) looks like a difficult project.
Man those came out So Beautiful!!! Incredible job!!!! Im very impressed! I hope you're very proud of yourself! Even some experienced blacksmith cant make scissors and youre barely starting out! Thats incredible! And they didnt come out ugly or not functioning lol thats so cool! Great video bro. Those will be a family heirloom for sure! Something passed down from you to your children and then passed to their children and so on. Very very nicely done. Theyre some very attractive scissors too. Bet they feel great to use. Take care bro and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching! I loved the process and can’t wait to make more stuff like this! If I’m going to make something, I go for function and utility! ❤️
Awesome! Hard to tell your anvil height. Getting it right sure makes a difference. Power hammer is great, almost like cheating😁. Keep up the great projects!
Thank you! That 400lb fisher is on the factory cast iron stand, I dont remember the measurement, but its a nice height for me!
Hey Chris, I just wondered what you're going to do about rust prevention. On the new scissors? They turned out absolutely amazing btw!!
This shows us the shop is at the cutting ✂️ edge of creativity and quality. Very nice presentation. One of my favorite channels on learning techniques. Lots of nice toys in that shop...thnx!
Молодец супер 👍👌
Would the railroad spikes make a good chisel for woodworking In your opinion?
They are “high carbon” but they don’t get as hard as a chisel should get after heat treating in my opinion. It would work but would require lots of sharpening.
@@MakeEverything gotcha. Yeah I'm trying to find something to make a chisel out of that is able to hold an edge. Thanks for the reply!
@@MakeEverything just got to the point where you answered my question 😂
❤❤❤
Great job and loved the video! What belt grinder do you use?
I respect everyone who were involved in this Seriously the best piece that i ve ever seen on UA-cam 💌 Hate off to well all 💟 love your videos.
Is this a real comment?
@@jeremyspecce Hi Jeremy, this is Heather Flanders and I have a big problem with my machine and I don't know who to contact. The bobbin is jammed because a piece of thread brook off under the unit I cannot get it out, the wheel will not turn and I have amess. We cannot get the arm off to get underneath it I am having so much trouble. I am an 83 year old woman and I have taken the screws out for the bobbing control but cannot get the arm off the screw won't come off the underside. The foot would not work before all this happened I've tried to adjust the wheel to make sure everything is in it's proper place and it was. Everything is jammed right now, can you help me? Here is my email address: hkflanders11@gmail.com my name is Heather K Flanders and I do leather craft I live in Arizona if you know anyone here that has one I love to get ahold of them. Thanks
At the end of the day you have to be proud of the fact that you made working scissors from a railroad spike. Just don’t run with them
Thank you! It was a very rewarding project that I learned a lot from!
Are all railroad spikes high carbon?
No not all of them, typically the spike has to have H C on top of the head to indicate it’s high carbon.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
How long did it take from start to finish?
About 6-7 hours
U made a comment about your metal collection will u explain it?thanks
And here i don't even know how to sharpen a pair of scissors.
most scissors have a bow in the blade yours not? why
