Our BARN Preservation Project | New Roof Installed

  • By our guess, our barn (granary) is about 140+ years old. Usually when properties were homesteaded back in the day, one of the first things they would build was a granary like this. The family would often live in this structure, while they built their home. And after they moved out, it would usually be use to store seed grains.
    Over the years, ours has been through a lot. There's a couple beams that have been replaced, and some spots on the roof had multiple layers of metal - all over the original cedar shake shingles. There's a groundhog that lives underneath it, and red squirrels use it to stash their winter food supply of walnuts. I would not classify our work as a restoration effort. But more of a preservation. Preserve what's there with modern materials so it will last, instead of trying to replicate what was done in the past. For starters, the old roof needs to go. It's slowly been leaking more and more of the last couple of years, so it's time to fix it once and for all. The new roof cost a pretty good chunk of money, but by keeping things dry this building should last a long long time to come.

    My name is Mike and I was the prior owner of this property.... I am so glad to see Todd and his family doing what I would like to have done. When I bought the property in 1990 it was sitting on the ground so one of my first projects was to get underneath this building, jack it up and put it on blocks. I also had to repair the SW corner of the base plate that had rotted away from sitting on the ground. If you saw, there were a couple of places where I patched the roof. I ran electrical to the building, added some lighting and used the bottom floor for my woodshop and the second floor as an exercise/music space. I also rebuilt the stairs to the second level. FWIW I did all the work myself. I had a lot of quality time in "the shed" as I called it - lot's of memories. Even left them a couple souvenirs - if you noticed the deer target, speakers, and the guitar poster! So happy to see this building getting an upgrade. If you're looking for suggestions - I always thought a porch with a shed roof would really finish the look.

    Looks fab Todd. Love the color of the metal. When we bought our house, it was a old church and the roof was shot around the chimney. Because we live in snow country everyone does metal roofing….and we chose black metal for our roof. But I do really love the color you got. Great job.

    The lean too is a blacksmith cradle. Used to repair farm equipment and store items. It is rare to find that section these days. Awesome guy's. I wouldn't tare it all down. But, would restore that section. There are some in existence in NC

    Great space. I think the upstairs should be grandma and grandkid retreat area I can see a little quilts and tea sets and table and chair maybe some dollies and I’ll definitely hang out for a grandma and grandkids. And maybe even the kids could hang out there when they come to visit definitely a great space for the summer or the winter if you had a little heat.

    Good to see you Todd!! We used chicken wire to fill the gap in one of our out buildings. Stapled it in and no birds are able to get in. With the high heat here in Texas it helps let the air in. Problem is yellow jackets get in so this winter I'm going to cut strips of window screening and cover the gap. With it being so hot here we collect rain water on the house and out building up to 1K gal. We need it when it's over 100 for 3 months and no rain. Looks good !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't wait to see the grandbaby. Our grand daughter is 10 and grandson is just over 1. God Bless Yawl!

    With the metal roof and the angle of the roof, the water will completely overshoot the eave spouts. I have the same roof on my house and a much lower angle and much larger eave spouts and the water still overshoots.

    I’m so glad they didn’t have black in stock. I think the dark gray looks so much better. Looks like they did a great job! I wish you would hire someone to save that lean-to, it’s so cool and part of the history of the farm. I also think the siding is amazing and there’s no way I would change that! It seems that midwesterners have a hard time appreciating old buildings the way they were made, tearing off windows and siding and replacing them with crummy vinyl. I don’t get it. I’m not saying you would use vinyl siding, I’ve just seen it a lot in the Midwest when I’ve been there. But why not appreciate the beautiful patina of the siding that’s on there, it looks pretty sound?

    • @1870s
      @1870s  2 роки тому

      I will definitely spend some time looking over that lean-to before. I just rip it down. And as for siding, it actually leaks in some spots which is not good. I think my plan is to put wood siding on specifically vertical board and batten, cedar if I can afford it.

    They did right by you. It looks really good. The most important thing is it's going to stay dry, so mission accomplished till next Spring. I'd keep the lean to also. It would be relatively easy to metal that. Love that old barn....

    They did a great job! Might be a bit strange but I quite like the patina of the metal on the sides of the barn, the patterns and shapes it makes are really unusual. I'm sure it doesn't look as good in person and It'll look 100% smarter being redone to match the roof of course, but it's interesting nonetheless :)

    From my perspective, what I consider the main side of the building looks like a work of art. There is rust colors, shades of blue and it looks like fire through a window. It is a wonderful old building. How about a weather vane?

  • @belindagray3005

    Roof looks good. But it is going to be a lot hotter up there come summer, those cedar shakes were more of an insulation than you would think. Also did you think about running wire mesh to keep birds out and still allow air circulation but then you gonna have wasp and other insects . Maybe screen wire? Really enjoy the channel. :)
