  • It's that time of the year again. Time to put the garden beds to rest for the cold winter months ahead of us. We try to mimic nature as much as possible for projects like this. Do do this with what we have on hand at the time - grass clippings mixed with leaves work best. But just leaves will do just fine if that's all you have. Even Pine straw will work just fine. Add a nice layer 3-5 inches deep and just leave it there until spring. The snow will come, back it all down, and saturate it with moisture.

Whew! We just caught a breath. We've been doing the same and been SO busy! Sorry for it taking so long for a comment, guys. We're so glad the straw bales worked as you'd hoped. We don't ever want ours to break down to that extent (too messy), as ours stand with the original twine only, all season. Our lawn sweeper is our fall best friend too!😁 Your garlic harvest turned out great! On 10/13, we planted 117 cloves, plus 14 Elephant Garlic cloves. It's our first time with the Elephant Garlic! Stellar job getting the garden all wrapped up for winter! Love you! God bless! 😗💪🏆🙏💗

What you said about chemicals is so true. I watch "Deep South Homestead" and Danny had bought some round bales of hay for his Dexters. He put their manure in the compost pile and didn't find out for some time the the hay fields had been sprayed. He put the compost in the greenhouse and nothing would grow. So, if you buy hay or straw, be sure it's not contaminated. I like the way you get it all ready for winter. The soil is a living thing and must be feed. Feeding it with something it recognizes is important. Good video.

      Very true!

The other thing that Danny said was that it had been sold to him as organically grown BUT they DID NOT say that as they cut it, it was chemically (Grazon) sprayed. So they could claim the organically grown label - nothing says that they need to say that they spray as its harvested.
That's why Danny & a few others have been having "fun" finding their hay now. They've learned what questions to ask those that grow it.
They were also told that the cows could eat the Grazon with no problems, BUT it could kill horses - the differences being in how their stomachs process it.

Loved watching this one. We've got plenty of leaves to cover the garden with this fall since the grasshoppers ate all the seedlings that came up. Jesus does give us all we need. The more I garden, the more I see Him in everything else I do.

Leaves are a great resource! We took a rocky barren hillside and tilled in leaves every year for close to ten years and now that has the richest black soil to garden in.

I absolutely loved this video but I am sorry you had to work so hard Rachel! The beautiful thing is that even when you get tired, you don't seem to mind. You just calmly perform your chores knowing what the benefit will be. I'm not a homesteader or gardener and didn't know this is what is meant by soil amendment. I literally thought you had to shovel every spot, adding something, to amend the soil. Thanks for teaching us!

Thank you! Thank you!! This was just what I needed! This was my first year with a larger garden and a lot that I have done has been pure guess work with a little dose of knowledge. I live in the north, and I have been second guessing myself since I put my beds to sleep. This is almost exactly what I did. But will remember to make my compost thicker next time! I really appreciated this video!! Thank you so much! Be well from South western Ontario Canada 🇨🇦

Fun seeing your fall routine and helpful too. I was considering using leaves but hadn't settled on it yet. Now I have! My husband always did all that and he passed away 5 weeks ago. I'm trying very hard to keep his beautiful garden as he did. It calms me being out there too. On a side note: I also harvested way more garlic than I can use in 5 years lol. Easy to over plant garlic, isn't it. Now if I can just get the lawnmower to start I will be mulching with leaves! Then to study what to do with our youngish fruit trees. So much to learn.

Hello love, I hope that the garden continues to be a connection for you. I am sure he would be so happy to see you continue the garden as you are able. Do not let it become a burden or chore as that would really detract from the connection. So maintain the amount that make you happy. May God bless you give you grace and peace for this journey. bye for now

At our old place we never left our beds naked. We had a small garden and had plenty of compost we made ourselves. The compost we used throughout the year as side dressing, mulch, or amendments.
Now being that we moved onto our new homestead this year, we have a harder time finding and creating compost since we have have chickens and more worms to feed our food waste too.
    Great video. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Y'all I just got my garlic in this week three varieties from Wisconsin so the will grow well here in Minnesota. I prepared my onion beds and covered with straw so they will be ready for bulbs in the early spring. I have all of the Old Alabama Gardener's onion videos saved. I printed a spreadsheet with all the dates and steps he outlines. So I am so excited to see this process next year. I want to try your straw bales garden next year and see how that goes. thank you for the video today I love watching Y'all work together because you work so well together. God Bless y'all this winter spring will come soon enough. bye for now.

I’ve got an agrifab gas powered leaf vac and it makes amazing compost. It helps chop the leaves up a bit in the first place, but then you put them in your pile with a nitrogen source, wait a couple weeks and turn it, wait a couple more weeks and suck it back into the leaf vac and it comes out perfectly finished compost. It’s a beautiful thing

I do the same thing. I came home with 25 large bags of leaves last weekend and expected to have more this weekend. I also bed my chickens with them. They get fresh bedding and I get compost at the start of next season. It saves the neighbors from having to take them to the dump and my garden and my chickens benefits too.

You just gave me a huge lightbulb moment. I was on the phone to my 82 year old Gran yesterday and she's been raking all the leaves on her lawn areas of the farm and dumping them back under the trees to compost in place. I could help her out by raking the leaves and taking them home for my garden (not that she needs it, she does the lawn mowing, manual push along I might add, and gardening to keep her fit but it's a huge farm for one old lady) . I get left over straw from the farm but it never even occurred to me to go and take some leaves! Sometimes you really someone to point out the obvious :)

Oh but I have to ask. Do you have the same issues with first cold/snow and the 100 + year old houses and mice invasion? I've gotten 2 in the past 2 hours 😳 and 1 a night for the past few day not to mention the ones the cats have gifted me by dropping them in bed with me. Lol.
We've gone though the basement and put stainless steel scrubbies in holes aluminum flashing and canning lids on holes etc..
I don't poison after one of my first cats got really sick eating a poisoned mouse(she was fine and lived to 18).
So far just setting out the old snap traps with a pumpkin seed tied to the trigger with peanutbutter smeared on top, seems to work but any other suggestions 🤔?

I seen this from you and did it this winter. But when its time to start planting, do you mix in the leaves in the dirt or keep them there and plant with it like mulch? Ty!

I pull back any that haven't broken down and use for mulch

I'm new at gardening here at my new place, I want to do raised bed gardening, how did you get started and did you plant stuff in it that same year ? The soil here is no good, so that's the only way I can think of to be able to garden here.i want to garden so badly.

What does one do with oak leaves covered in powdery mildew? I've already used these leaves earlier to cover my plant. How do I treat plants contaminated by powdery mildew?

I know this doesn’t exactly pertain to the video... but what kind of gloves do you use when it starts getting cold outside taking care of the animals? We have rabbits and I was going to get chickens in the spring but I didn’t think about taking care of the animals outside and cleaning coops when it’s cold 😅

So what do u use on your lawn for fertilizer and to keep weeds at bay? Or do you not do anything?

We don't put anything on our lawn. No herbicides, and no fertilizer.

I have only 2 raised garden beds but do not have grass clippings or leaves saved. What would be best to cover them with now? Should I purchase a straw bale or 2 and break that over them? Thx

That can work.. makes sure it is not sprayed with herbicides or pesticides and it may still be breaking down in the spring... takes a couple of years most times.. but just move aside and plant and then put back around the plants when they are bigger than the mulch layer. Now is the time to start aging it, because it can absorb nitrogen at first and then release it again as it breaks down.

Rachel...how do you keep dandelions out of your yard? Mine are multiplying so fast and hand pulling is not slowing them down ;} I don't want to use Weed n Feed because I collect a lot of grass and leaves for composting.

In the yard, really we just ignore them. They cover things in the spring quite a bit, but by summer they're gone. Late fall a few may bloom. We just leave them. Our bees need them.

We store in our basement mostly. You can also break apart the heads, toss the cloves in a freezer bag, and store in freezer. We're researching other ways.

I cringe when I see you spreading those leaves with your bare hands. Having had Lyme disease, I can tell you it is a giant health scare. The ticks are prevalent in our area, I hope they aren’t in MI. There is nothing more satisfying than working the earth with ones hands but there are dangers to avoid, stay safe.

    • @1870s

They are in MI, but this time of the year there's usually NONE around anymore. Too cold for them. In the spring we have to be really careful.
