    I love this video. Modular synthesizers have been my main instrument for the last decade or so. I've really gone through many modules/systems/concepts over the years. I have seen many eurorack videos and this one is exceptional! No nonsense, down to earth and explains some very clever sequencing techniques. Thumbs up!

    Many thanks for the over- and review! For me, the real fun begins when combining multiple sequencers, like triggering envelopes from a trigger sequencer, perhaps of the euclidian variety and set pitch, cutoff, resonance and envelope values from a CV sequencer as well as transposing one by the other or have a mix of several CVs to deliver the final CV that sets a value. By having different sequence lengths, play modes and resets there is a lot of variation as well as similarity and a complex pattern is quite often a happy little accident (you read this in Bob Ross voice). To get those results by playing a keyboard would take ages - if possible at all. Sequencing opens so many creative doors, I find it´s a multiplier for your musical output.

    Have you played with teh Behringer 960. I am thinking about putting it , along with a 962 into a homemade shallow case with wooden cheeks. That way I can use it like the dark time to the side of my eurorack, when I want to. The dark time looks similar to the 960. Does the dark time have more functionality than the 960?

    • @synthesizer83
      @synthesizer83  2 роки тому +2

      I tested the 960 once in my local music store. The Darktime seems to have more options regarding the gate outputs (you can select gate on / off per step), while the 960 is more a pure cv sequencer. Also, the Darktime has a few transport options (forward, backward, pendulum), where I'm not sure about the 960. Quantization is also a big thing, the Darktime has a few options here. On the other hand, the 960 has three cv tracks, the Darktime has only two.
      But very cool idea with the case! I was thinking about such a small, portable case a few times, where I put my most favorite modules in.

    Very good walk-through. I agree this is one of those modules that makes sense only if you're going for the full vintage reproduction experience, which is my case. Otherwise there are plenty of better alternatives. For me no other sequencer beats the Eloquencer.

    Great videos! Thank you! I have an issue with my 182 that is impossible to get any answers to on the internet, so I thought I´d try and ask you. Whenever I press stop on the sequencer there is still a droning sound coming through from the oscillator. I am dead shure that I have patched everything correctly (the sound appears even though the vca gain is down to zero) I also tried the 960 sequencer and my Oxi One and with the same patching there is no sound passing thruough when i stop the sequencer. The gate time on the 182 is set to zero. When turning the switch to single mode, no sound passes through though. Ever so grateful for any insight in the matter. Kind regards Otto

    • @synthesizer83
      @synthesizer83  Рік тому

      That sounds really strange, when your VCA is down to zero you shouldn't hear anything, regardless of the sequencer mode. Are you sure you have no ground loop or anything similar, which gives you the drone; does the pitch of the drone change when you tune the VCO?

    • @OttoMilde

  • @station2station544
    @station2station544 2 роки тому +1

    pitching quantizing is a huge + for me. If the sequencer doesn't have it, it'll need to run thru a pitch quantizer afterwards - microtonal sequence patterns rarely work for me.. Even the Oberheim TwoVoice sequencer module had pitch quantizing in 1975. Thanks for the video. I'm shocked how good the System 100 modules sound 24:16 and on.

    • @synthesizer83
      @synthesizer83  2 роки тому

      Yeah, quantizing is very handy. In particular when you want to alter your sequence on the fly, you're basically lost without a quantizer. However, the original Roland system had no quantizer, so Behringer copied this issue well...

  • @IanWaugh
    @IanWaugh 3 роки тому +3

    Great video! I love step sequencers although I think it should be law that they include a quantiser! 😀 I had an original Roland 100m system. The omission of a range switch on the 182 makes it difficult to tune, I think. You also have my fave step sequencer - the Doepfer Dark Time. I also have the Pittsburgh and Ladik S610 which is interesting. Another one of my faves is the Behringer 960. Alas, a large module but with 3 channels and one-knob-per-function, it's fun and easy to use. It's also very cheap! 😀 but you may also want the 962 (also cheap!) to get the most from it.

    • @synthesizer83
      @synthesizer83  3 роки тому +3

      The 960 is massive. I always wanted a Doepfer 155, this goes into the same direction but has only 16 steps in total. Please, don't make me start a Behringer System 35! I get addicted fast...

    • @IanWaugh
      @IanWaugh 3 роки тому +3

      @@synthesizer83 😀 Join our Synthaholics Club - I'm VP 😀 Tim Shoebridge has covered the Behringer system in detail and although it was something to be aspired to in the past, I really wouldn't want one of these now. However, you can use individual modules such as the 960 in any system.
      I also looked at the 155 but it seemed over-priced and under-powered for what it does. I love the switches and although it has recently come down in price (a bit) you still need an add-on with it (akin to the 962) but the 960 is much better value. But I wouldn't try to build an entire B system around it. I'm not that nostalgic! 🤣

    Thanks for the walk-through of this limited but still very enjoyable sequencer. Maybe it would be worth to mention that you can easily daisy chain 2 182 units by setting the sequencer to "single" mode and connect the trigger out of the first 182 to the the trigger in of the second 182, and then connect the trigger out of the second 182 to the trigger in of the first 182? But maybe that's obvious (I have not seen anyone demoing that so far)!?

      Versuch mal die gate polarity des SQ1 auf "positive" umzustellen (steht im manual unter "global settings"). Auch das Timing des sync out Ausgangs kann man verändern, ich hab meins auf "16tel" und "sync x1". Damit geht es relativ zuverlässig. Der SQ1 gibt allerdings auch im gestoppten Zustand sync Signale ab, wodurch es schwer wird, beide Sequencer bei Step 1 beginnen zu lassen. Einfacher geht das, wenn man einen der gate Ausgänge zum syncen opfert.

Stating that it does not track 1V/Oct, have you verified that this results from the sequencer? Because that would mean, it looses some triggers. Alternatively, the inaccuracy could result from the - external - trigger: If one triggers the sequencer e.g. by some LFO (whose frequency is controlled by keyboard pitch CV), the inaccuracy could also result from here if the scaling is not exact.

      In a simple way: No. In a more complicated way: Yes. You could use the second row of the sequence and feed it's cv into a VCA cv input. Then you feed the gate output through the audio path of this VCA (ac / dc coupling should make no big difference here) before the now altered gate goes into your envelope. Now you can use the cv of the 2nd sequence to disable certain steps by just turning the VCA down.

      Yeah the built-in sequencer is great (don't have one, but seems to have a fluent workflow). Curious if it outputs cv and gate via midi, so that you can use it to control other gear?
