Nothing is more beautiful and haunting as the stripped down version. I wonder what this would sound like in a full-on, dark, grungy, "Cobain-esqe" sound.
I’m still here. Sometimes it just feels nice to quote that line for some weird reason. I’m slowly killing myself with booze. Thank you for caring enough to ask though- it truly means something to me. Thank you ❤️
The best part of this video is when he accidentally knocks over his own mic and simply moves over to the bass player's mic without missing a beat! FUCKING LEGENDARY!
Richie trying to kill himself in, "The Royal Tenebaums" is one of my favorite scenes in any movie, I have to admit I cry every time. The music, the montage, the acting, all fucking amazing.
Always loved this badass version. Can’t believe it’s been 20 years since you’ve been gone. I was so fortunate to see you live 7 times. Miss you Elliott.
Still the best version of this song in my opinion. Love the intro where the drum kicks in. It's my ringtone from 0:10 . Would love to see more bands covering this song. Didn't know Johnny Depp used this song to "get in character" in the movie Secret Window.
@@Jalushun elliott was defintely influenced by the beatles bud. he's covered lennon's "jealous guy" and multiple george harrison songs. there's no bullshit in that comparison
@@ianbrowning6977 They are in complete genres, and that's like if you told me that Johnny Cash was heavily inspired by Nine Inch Nails because he covered Hurt. Yet another bullshit comparison, and a reach.
I truly love the stripped down acoustic version best. However, this version makes me contemplate a full-on dark, grungy,Cobain-esqe re-imagining of this Brilliant/Beautiful/Tragic......Masterpiece.
Did anyone notice Elliott completely destroy his microphone t 2:23, Sam picks it up, then another guy comes in with a whole new mic stand to fix it at 3:07.
He is great. His songwriting skills were incredible, his guitar picking is fabulous, he has some true emotion in his music. Isn't that enough to be great? Or should you sell millions of records to be called great?
Daniel W. I think a lot of appreciation also comes from being a musician. I've showed Elliott to a lot of people who don't know what they were listening to and didn't appreciate it to the degree that I do as a musician. His composition and knowledge of chords is amazing and effortless. And that spans across every instrument- Elliott played almost every instrument on his albums. Guitar, piano, drums, bass, all the melodies, it all came from him. That's part of the reason he's "great".
This version prooves one more time the powerness of his talent and the possibility of his songwriting, he could have made a big hit, even if it was not what was he liked. Respect
thanks for reposting. i still can't believe he's gone. thank god for videos so he never will really be gone.one of my favorite music artists! needle in the hay cuts deep into my soul. r.i.p.
One of the most underrated songs of all-time. It's haunting, terribly depressing, brutally honest, and somehow uplifting melodically. There is genius to this song that is difficult to explain but you immediately feel it from the first chords.
Totally agree! Well put. Few songs out there just dive straight down your gut like this one does. I was mesmerized from the very first time I ever heard it. I just found this version, less haunting of course, but works as a fantastic rock song nevertheless! Just an amazing song.
Angry Elliott was awesome. I wish he didn't have to be around cunts to feel so bad about the world. I wish nobody ever hurts a gentle soul again or makes a soul like this angry, but who am I fooling? Reality will drive some of us to the edge. Love one another and all that.
I think I may dig the full band version of needle in the hay more than the album version. I guess it depends on the weather and my mood. bcs ya know the wise words of mr cobain "weather changes mood"
Honestly you are right, but I still prefer the studio version a little bit more. Purely because it is so fragile and you can feel the pain in his words. Anyway he’s incredible
@TheYakkis Hi, I dont wanna make a A vs B discussion. I agree, this electric, band version has a lot of Nirvana vibe. Kurt Cobain committed the "crime" of having success, I think his success was a good thing for pop music. I really feel very deep things in Nirvana songs: Pennyroyal Tea, Scentless Apprentice, Frances Framer... I personally think that Kurt, Elliott and Jeff Buckley were the 3 greatest songwriters of the 90s.
True. I think it was sometime after the Figure 8 tour. One of the music producers that was a friend of his got mad at him for it. He had to complete the rest of the album more or less by himself.
Sam Coomes is a great bass player: wish I could have seen them together in Heatmiser on the Mic City Sons tour...any one have footage? Portland Rocked!
This is like a whole different song live and electric. A good song, too (not that the original version is at all bad). And I'm inclined to believe when he says thanks at the end, he actually meant that.
i did not expect him to sing that high lol
Okay this is the last Elliott Smith video I watch tonight. I swear. I've got only 3 hours left to sleep.
Miquel happens to me too lol.
MakeAmericaLiftAgain same
Guess we all need some elliot smith before sleeping
I saw this exactly 3 hours before I have to wake up. Must be a sign...

When the drums come in.. Perfect. This version is so fucking good.
i agree
Hey,i Agree!!!
I really wish there was an official , high fidelity version of this version
i was in the front row for this show.
thanks so much for posting these.
this made my day.
How was it ?
Jealous!
you lucky duck!
This electric version slays.
this version is absolutely hectic. far out the man wrote some killer songs.
first heard this in the movie "The Royal Tennanbaums" the "suicide attempt" scene. Good movie. Good song
I’m going to kill myself tomorrow 😥
@@callen9623 hey, you still here?
@@donglebonk Don't worry, the quote is from the movie.
same. wes anderson is a genius for putting this song to that scene.

I don't think it was an accident. I don't think he liked the backing vocal so he made a change
damn this version is badass. i like how he changes the line in the second verse. awesome.
I really like this. You never really hear Elliott singing this loud when he's playing acoustic by himself. I'm diggin it.
Richie trying to kill himself in, "The Royal Tenebaums" is one of my favorite scenes in any movie, I have to admit I cry every time. The music, the montage, the acting, all fucking amazing.
So sad how we're never going to experience him playing live
his stage presence looks really natural. I like that.
he changed the line head down to toes a reaction to you, to everyone knows he's a reaction to you. so versatile, he was way too good.
RIP
Ya he changed that line

How’d u set it as a ringtone
Jesus Christ.
my mind has gone out the back of my head at 300 miles an hour.
Wish they did a studio version of this, it's amazing what the addition of electric guitar and drums can have.
I love that I can control my only view into Elliot Smith's world....I, only, have to press play. Thank you. He smiles when he sees the wave forming.
Elliott will always live on through masterpiece such as this
i love the OG version off of his self titled, but electrifying this one works very well. it still sounds amazing, just very different.
i always knew he did a "rock version" of this and dare i say...i was a bit dubious, im now convinced i like everything this guy ever did.
Every time i hear this I feel like listening to it over and over at least ten times and its excellent every time
i can listen to this song 50 times in a row and still enjoy it, what a masterpiece!
This version really is a testament to the strength of that vocal melody.
Yeah its a good vocal melody
Props to the drumer
Love the punky garage crungy touch of those versions
How does he make a few simple chord changes sound so good?
It’s like a rare catchy hook made of chords instead of riffs, amazing.
@Colin Wilson that’s funny because Elliot Smiths songwriting really reminds me of John Lennon and definitely not McCartney

Totally, I saw him do a quick switch to another mike which was smooth. Smith was a great musician. His guitar work is underrated and quite incredible.
I wish I had half the talent that Elliott did. Such an amazing musician and songwriter.
What a kickass version of one of Elliott's best songs. Also, it's really cool to hear him belting that high.
Kills me how he died, however 'it' happened it gives me a stomach gipping feeling when I think about it. Brilliant how much he left with us though.
It's horrible how someone so great left so quickly. Makes me sad.
+ManMoo why do you think this person was great? maybe capable of making some catchy tunes but wheres the greatness?
He is great. His songwriting skills were incredible, his guitar picking is fabulous, he has some true emotion in his music. Isn't that enough to be great? Or should you sell millions of records to be called great?
Aqman Druunk But if that's the definition of "great" then there are millions of people alive today that are "great."

it's impressive that his acoustic stuff sounds just as good live.
Ya this version live sounds great even though its an acoustic song
holy CRAP what a sweet version of this song. God i wish i could have f*&%ing been there so bad
This song rocks, Elliott does it all. Knocked that mic over, turned and laughed about it.
THAT'S how you open a show.
Elliott's performance reminds me of Dylan, circa 1974. Taking this song that the audience knows and completely reinturpreting it.
RIP, Mr. Smith.
