I'm pretty sure I've heard every bootleg out there and I agree this is the best run of live shows with a band, and the tour for Either/Or is the best run of solo shows- the combo of songs from his first three albums along with b-sides like Division Day and Some Song, plus the early versions of songs that would be on XO is just too freaking good. Plus although his voice wasn't as strong as it was right here, he was still very young and sounded just like those first albums.

Thank you for sharing this concert Kane. Elliott Smith’s music saved my life when I was at a very low place while living in Portland. I first heard Elliott play at an open mic at The Egyptian Lounge on Division St. within a few weeks of arriving into the ‘Rose City’. I remember turning to my friend Jay Lukens, who lived in Portland and had invited me out to the open mic, and asking how the hell was this guy not playing shows? And then saying that if he can’t get gigs, we are totally screwed. Jay informed me Elliott’s band, Heatmeiser had just broken up, and Elliott was trying out new solo material. Little could I imagine that just a short time later, my friend Jay and I opened up for Elliott at Umbra Penumbra just off of west Burnside. I remember a kind, shy person who didn’t seek attention off stage, and rather wanted to know about you and your life.
He even shared a Red Hook with me in the green room before the show. I miss him dearly and am forever influenced by his music and humility. All the love for making this concert available to us Kane. All the best and may Elliott’s music live on forever through all of us who appreciate his gifts.

But in response to when you said "there's only so much footage of him", thankfully we haven't seen all of the footage of him that's out there. For starters there are tons of live performances on youtube, I've seen a handful of them but I bet there are a hundred more that I haven't seen. And there's other footage that hasn't even been released yet, sitting on a VHS tape, DVD or hard drive somewhere. For example this Fuji Rock show was only found and released a few years ago. One of my most memorable gigs was seeing him and his band in Manchester, UK, way back the early 2000s. What a gig that was. They were on top form, great banter, unforgettable really as I’m still talking about it twenty odd years later. After a bit of a hiatus, I’ve recently had an Elliott binge thanks to my 8 year old son who is something of a super fan. I must be doing something right. Thanks Elliott for your songwriting genius and that gig. I’m so glad my kid listens to you and not the shit they churn out today. That is a true legacy. RIP

He could really teach these new screwheads how to put a little heart back into their music and be able to call it music again.

I've heard similar things from other people, it's interesting how that works. Apparently a significant amount of people walked out of his shows around the 2000-2003 period because he looked to be in such bad shape, but I really like those shows (especially the 1-31-2003 show) although admittedly his voice is a bit.... faltery, if that's a word.
Some people say the 2002-2003 show were rough because he was high, others say they were rough because he was sober. Personally I think it's more likely that he was sober, he seems a little bit anxious and tightly wound, I think we would have been looser if he was fucked up on anything. It makes sense that if you get used to performing high for a decade, performing sober would be much more difficult and actually more likely to result in a sloppy performance.
