  • The NAS is noisy, so I made a soundproof box.
I hope it will be your reference.

THIS IS EXACTLY WHY I WANT TO MAKE A SOUNDPROOF BOX

Fantastic presentation and craftsmanship, I'm so impressed! I'm surprised the ports on either side don't let the noise escape, how is the box so effective without sealing off the NAS completely?

    • @ge2719
      @ge2719 Рік тому

ideally you would create a u bend that is itself sound dampened all over. since sound can pass through a surface and also bounce around i order to travel around corners. here the white panelling will absorb most of the bouncing sound and the black rubber will prevent much of the sound that will travel through the surface. but if you wanted to do this with an even more effective design you'd create a U channel itself completely covered with layers of the black and white panels. or at least an L shaped channel. But you obviously have to weight up the benefit of the extra material and the extra size the box will need to be.

Effective soundproofing! However, you should make some temperature measurements inside the NAS, with and without soundproofing - in most cases, when sound does not come out, hot air does neither. And if you force ventilation, then you have the sound of the fan(s). I've had a failed attempt to solve that problem in the past and it took a housing inside a much bigger labyrinth housing, made of construction foam (not the best sound absorber, but easy to cut and assemble), with 2 independent fans, running at different speeds (higher speed inside and lower speed / high diameter outside). It was just a stubborn exercise of how far we could go to reduce noise and not burn the electronics inside and simply wasn't worth the effort (maybe we had too much spare time) - we resorted to placing the noisy machine in another room.
I'm curious to know the inside temperatures of your NAS, with and without soundproofing.

If not put in the box, the temperature is 48℃
When put in a box, the temperature is 50°C
      Room temperature 27°C
Temperature measurement must always be performed. I am performing temperature measurement.
Also, this NAS is operating with 6 HDDs. RAID6.
If there is something wrong with the NAS, an email will be sent.
Of course, it is also connected to UPS.
Therefore, I decided that I didn't need to see the NAS monitor either.
If you create the correct airflow, you will be able to maintain the full effect of NAS fans.
      No additional fans required.

      Thank you
This NAS has very good fans.
In making this soundproof box, I also checked the fan performance.
I'm convinced that it can cool enough even in this soundproof box.
However, not all NAS will work equally well.

@@jisakukobo like Jose I am surprised there is not a bigger temperature difference, but from a design perspective you designed it upside down. Hot air rises... putting the vent at the bottom is detrimental to heat getting out passively. So for the same port size (you basically created a Helmholtz resonator) it will allow less heat out for the same noise level.

I'm surprised you didn't do your own NAS PC with custom case :)
The case would be similar and just ordinary PC inside with some payed software from Synology seems to be straightforward way to go and easier on the wallet. This is how I want to retire my current PC when time comes.
Saying that, most people use laptops now so I understand this is uncommon...
The box is great. Well made. I am obsessed with adding one exhaust and intake fans as Japan is hot in the summer.
Saying that, I've seen now from your comments that your temps are fine...
Your videos are great. I found you a week ago and keep watching them. I've found few good ideas that I will use for my own projects. The quality is excellent as well. :)
Thank you for adding Japanese. I moved to Japan so it is very helpful for me when you add the name of stuff you use in Japanese. If I ever buy anything you use in the videos I will make sure the shop knows I found then through you.
    Good luck.

      Thank you
Certainly, there is also the option of making a NAS.
However, this NAS has a speed of 10GbE.
I wanted a NAS with this speed. I didn't even think about it because I needed an expensive motherboard to make it.
However, it may be cheaper to make your own.
      Japanese is also added.
I think it will be displayed if youtube is set to Japanese.

Looks like a Japanese domestic market IODATA Lan Disk HDL6-H system. It isn't really intended for home use, focused more for small businesses, so it isn't really going to be super quiet. Looks like most of the noise is from the PSU fan, I'd swap that out first...

yes. sound proof may be the wrong word. but still it seems to be transitioned from annoying to barely audible above room noise. If he actually got only +2° (on load) its simply this: a great job. congrats! And still I would also opt for low air in and high air out.
