I don't see how average people can "rebuild" if they can't even afford to the rising cost of living. Only rich people can afford to "rebuild" or have a new 2 level house with hurricane rated windows built!
It wasn't the killer because people evacuated. It's a kind of survivorship bias that because people left, there weren't as many fatalities, which means that it wasn't as deadly.

What is the definition of a man? You are looking at it! The the epitome of strength, courage, and love for our desperate neighbors. It probably is quite nasty but you also have to remember that rivers and creeks in the south are generally murky like that to begin with due to tannins from the dominant trees of the area.
It's road runoff, fertilizer, insecticides, herbicides, industrial waste, garbage, and sewage (imagine how many clueless Yankees and immigrants sh** themselves).
It was bound to happen. Development has been poorly regulated. Speculators and Tallahassee have ignored conservationists for a hundred years. It's bound to happen again. Don't build your house on sand.

I find that we need more recognition of the local LEO communities on a ntl level!! They rly are the hero’s of these hurricane situations. Idt they’re getting enough credit, press, or recognition. It is literally impossible for some people to evacuate. Some people don’t have a car or enough money in the bank to pay for a single night in a hotel, not to mention no family to depend on or health problems, etc.
If you zoom in they look like piles of sand. Before Milton hit there were lots of heavy equipment that was being used to move the sand that had washed inland from the storm surge from hurricane Helene which was blocking roads and homes. In some areas the sand that was forced inland was several feet deep. Don’t know if there was enough time to redeposit that sand back onto the beaches.
First of all there are no crocodiles in that part of Florida, and very few in the entire State. It's Alligators you have to worry about.. Secondly, Scared of lizards?

I’m on coast of nc, I know old houses are not high off of the ground, but I’m surprised that mote homes aren’t made to be built ‘x’ feet of foundation or built on stilts. We built ours in 05 and had to have a 4 ft elevation above our ground floor. Our neighbor built in 07 and had to have a 6ft elevation! You couldn’t even see the workers once the put up the block foundation wall! Most buildings built along river or beach areas have to be ‘x’ feet in elevation bc of flooding, to keep insurers here. The obx and we slightly inland (called the inner banks), face a lot of damage from hurricanes. So it just surprises me more aren’t like that. 😊

I tried to tell them not to solicit all of these Yankees to move here. They have invaded the state like a swarm of whiney locusts.
It’s heartbreaking to see a persons home destroyed. My family got through Milton with minor issues. Prayers for those severely impacted. 🙏🏻
