I loved this episode. I've been watching Mads build a boat for 5 years or more, and now I get to watch him and his wife sail it. One thing I've never seen is Mads in a pair of shorts and a tee-shirt. Once he hits the humid and hot shores of the eastern US should provide some really good entertainment.
Same here!! I use to watch his videos on the tv as we were looking for a boat back in 2018. We are now on our cruising adventure full time after finishing a Wharram catamaran long story short. But watching his channel ever since and it makes me feel awesome how much Mads has given to the sailing community during the boat build. I’m stoked for him and his wife. When you build something like this type of life it means everything to him I’m sure.
If Mads was seen in a pair of Bermuda shorts and t-shirt ....it's very likely he would be arrested...
Why do you think it was declared from the start they would always be traveling to colder climes? ;) But we should anyway be happy. There's enough sailing channels frolicking in the tropics. I'm enjoying UK and Ireland as much as anything, and the eastern coast of North America will surely be the northern part.
yep. Perhaps there's a reason, but the non-wearing of shorts is super weird to me.
Unless it's actually cold or I need to look 'professional', it's shorts all year 'round. 🙂
Having followed Mads on his somewhat OCD refit journey for years, I take great comfort whenever I spot the untrimmed hole around the chart table/galley pole. He isn’t super-human after all 🤓. Another great video from Ava and Mads, the nicest couple on UA-cam.
Yes me too. It screams out in just about every video, “Please put some trim on me….” I also spotted some blue tape handles on the lid to the freezer…. But I guess a boat is never finished. Andy UK
And what about the clear bulkhead (@7:25)?!
There isn't a single note!
Nothing on a "to do" or "doing" list!!! 😯
Your channel just engenders good feelings.
That bird pooping has to be the single best clip I've ever seen in a sailing video. :)
The flowers are fuchsia, my favourite flowers, back when I had a large garden I had around 10 varieties. Great in planters and hanging baskets!
If you squeeze them onto the back of your hand, they have a very sweet nectar
@@thecivvie you can also eat the berries on some when they go purple, taste like a grape
My wife has one named Steve hanging by the front door.
Little ballerinas !
@@thecivvie same with honeysuckle
Fuchsia Flowers! Thanks for taking us along. P.s. Ava, blink twice if you need rescue from the crazy non-caffine drinker!
BTW It is pronounced few sha (short a}
The Fuchsias were introduced from Northern india originally and have naturalised ..there are many different types and colours..we called them ballet dancers as kids.. bees and butterflies love them .
Recommend you add a safety line between the outboard battery and either Athena or the dingy, especially when transferring the battery between the boat and dingy If you drop it overboard, yikes! Love your series!!
I believe epropulsion has floating batteries.
I think they are designed to float!
I think it floats! So no biggie if it is dropped!
Yes, people float too, but 70% never make it back onboard alive according to the RNLI.

Thank you, thank you thank you. I have been a patron for several years now and have been watching for several years. I can’t express with words how much pleasure it gives me to see you guys cruising and reporting your travels. This video was over the top! I watch and support other sailing channels but you guys have up ‘upped the ante’ in videography and presentation. What a joy to watch. God bless you in your future endeavors. Can’t wait to see more. This channel should hit a million in subscribers and viewers.
You guys are busting out the comedy today!
My husband and I are enjoying living vicariously through the two of you. You’re so level-headed, safe and knowledgeable, and at the same time FUN! We enjoy the on-shore insights, too: the history, geography and culture. Thanks!
“Beach bronze babe” this quote needs to be on a t shirt for Mads!! 😂😂😂
Watching you from our boat at Winter Cove, Saturna island BC Canada. You made my knees weak when you stuck the camera out over the cliff.
It's nice to see Athena complete and sailing.
Ava, sailors with hats often use a foot or two of string or ribbon, with a spring loaded clip on each end. (Like an electrical alligator clip.) The idea is, it is cheap and easy, and if your hat blows off, it is still attached to the back of your shirt or jacket collar. FYI.
Fuchsia.....we had those flowers when I was a kid, and I love them too
Mads, forgive me if this has been answered before, I don't remember hearing any discussion, but. I would say that given all the systems you have onboard Athena, many/all powered by electricity, have you given more thought about the possibility of what a lighting strike would do to all the electronics? I hope it never happens, but I would think you would have spent a lot of time on planning/implementing lighting mitigation. As always, best to you, Ava, and Athena (who really wants a gold leaf cove stripe).
@N Wuepper The question you asked has come up before but I do not recall Matt’s ever answering the question. Knowing Matt’s there is probably some failsafe system to prevent a lightening strike from frying his electronic gadgets! I would love to hear someone make a guess or actually know what would happen on a boat if struck by lightening.
So Sweet... So nice to be aboard Athena.
Can I just say I love that Ava's mug is wearing a matching sweater. :)
Blueberries are my favorite fruit, blueberry oatmeal is delicious! I also like frozen blueberries on plain chex mix cereal. It freezes with the milk and almost makes a kind of frozen mix. Delicious and actually really healthy!
Glad you enjoyed my homeland. Come back soon. We’re based in Malahide (north of Dublin) last year we sailed to Bantry bay for our 25th wedding anniversary. Great to revisit where I learned to sail as a teenager
Wonderful views of Ireland. Great fitness program.
Fuchsias ..they're beautiful and come in different colours
It’s 4:30 AM here in south Alabama I’ve been up 15 minutes and I’m sitting here watching y’all with a big mug with 2 PG Tips bags and just a splash of half and half. When I get to work at 5:45 I’ll make another mug with 2 more. Love y’all.
The flowers are fuchsias, if you break them off below the brown coloured bit at the base of the flower you can taste a little bit of nectar.
We used to say when you can see the land, its gonna rain... if you cant see land, its raining!
I LOVE your videos. Absolutely a lovely episode! Enjoyed every minute, especially the food and lovely flowers. (Looking forward to France, but visions of Bronze Beach Babe Mads have me giddy with anticipation.) 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕😎
Stay safe and we'll see you next week.
Those were beautiful fuchsia Ava. My wife would be in heave if hers grew like that. Thank you for showing another beautiful part of Ireland and the views west.
Wow. Ava is strong! Great episode.
What a lovely peek into your daily life! Thanks for sharing
You two might want to try "Shelta" hats. They are a bit expensive but performance oriented, specifically with ocean life in mind. I have a few and am particularly happy with their construction and fit.
The "tape handle" in the freezer "smells" like some small DIY fun :). Love you guys..Mad you have been a "mad" inspiration multiple times in my small boat refit....cheers to both of you!
We have a house on Heir! If you're still there you HAVE to go to the island cottage for a meal it's incredible
A while ago you were concerned about losing viewers or being able to create content due to the lack of projects and increase in sailing. I don't think that will be a problem. You two make such an awesome couple....cherish each other and never take each other for granted.
Grey & rainy where i am @ too. Very relatable, only i am land locked. Cheers.
This video was perfect. Exactly what I wanted to see, life on a boat. Don't take me wrong, I love DIY vids that you have made. Maybe the quality of your work and research could have been down to my level. anyway loved them. If I can make suggestion, You are more interesting than Vagabond. So why?? First it was DIY but now it is the everyday sailing and touristing information.Talk and show both negative and positive things you see in your travels. Even climate. Lot of boating vids you see perfect natural climate. But no one talks about it. Anyway I love you. I have 52 f ketch but my lady wife is not well enough to get on it.
Wild Fuchia are the flowers we grew them on our land on the edge of lough Gill in Sligo
Top tip for flower spotting. If you take a pic on your iPhone of an unidentified flower then look at it in photos. You may see the info i has stars round it. If it does tap that and it will tell you the flower species. Also works for dogs and cows! Another great vid guys.
Beautiful video. Enjoyed that.
You two are great together really enjoy watching. Thanks
That was a really nice episode!
What a breath of fresh air,you guys are killing it I just look forward to your next video each week no more insecurities regarding DIY your relaxed and it shows
I love in a higher altitude of the northern Rocky Mountains of Utah. Fuchsias love the summers here too.
Thanks Ava for the 411 on PG tips tea. Never heard of it , but will give it a try.
Fuchsia are your lovely flowers
I am watching the videos from the early days of refitting Athena. I decided to also watch the latest videos to stay current. There are so many changes between the two. like the induction stove, the nav station (i just watched three videos of Maz painting it in the aft-cabin) ... clearly I have some twists and turns to come in the refit story! This video was awesome. Ireland looks very beautiful and you guys seem very happy . I am not sure about the "bronzed beach babe" comment. it seems very optimistic :)
they are wild fuchias
if you break at a woody part of stem
and stick it straight into soil or potting compound
it will grow they are very hardy plants
bees love them
{:-) PAV UK
Way to go Ava on your home gym, and PG tips is good and strong
Beutiful footage, have fun.
good update, glad you feel better from the dreaded cov....
While I have many favourite episodes, this is one of them. My hubby and I cruise and getting a glimpse of your day-to-day life just made me feel right at home. Ireland was wonderful. Looks like you had a lot of fun. Safe sail to France
I like the highly functional Freezer Door Blue Tape handle!
Thank you guys both for yet another fun time aboard good old Athena!! Keep up the good work. Can’t believe that I’ve been following Mads since his first boat refit and now here we are 7 years later and you’re out sailing, while I’m still sitting behind the same desk, doing the same thing over and over. Best to you both.
Fuchsias indeed! They’re similar to the annuals in the US in shaded hanging baskets and grow as hardy shrubs in Ireland!
The yellow flowering shrubs are called Gorse. Some consider them a nuisance, but they smell like coconut and are beautiful!
In certain places gorse is known as whins.
Okay let your minds at ease the video format changes are amazing the editing blend of lifestyle, nature and boating is spectacular. Keep up the great work and enjoy yourselves thanks for taking us along.
Fun video guys! You were worried about content that was DIY oriented, but you pulled it off very well. I cannot think if you've had another video that had NO DIY. Must feel good to be done.
Coordinated breakfast. Cute!
Hey Mads, this is the second video that doesn’t post on Patreon. Am I the only one? Thanks for the video. 👍🏻✌🏻🇨🇦
I loved this offshore videos
when you travel by sea you get to explore so much more than by air or even on the road, great video as always
🍻🍻 very cool,my mom has those flowers in her yard they are Awsome
Long time viewer(started watching before Athena) The vibe from this video is great, and I like the interplay between the two of you instead of the Mads does one thing and Ava does the other. The fern footage had me laughing hard enough to worry about walking others in the house.
You two make a magic pair and love watching both of you, Your meal looked awesome.
Great episode guys. 👌
Great episode
PG Tips over Yorkshire teabags, What fresh hell is this!!
Brilliant you two. No need to worry about the content transitioning from DIY to cruising, you’ve nailed it!!!
Love the videos - if you're in Ireland, give Barry's tea a go. I usually stock up when I go there!
That fern music :D :D :D Thank you for a lot of happy laughs and this great channel!
I always look forward to a new Sail Life video. I've been subscribed from the beginning!
I was worried I'd lose interest after the boat projects came to an end, but the fern fetish is keeping me watching.
Such a good episode! Love getting to see you two enjoy Athena and the world.
wow so glad there is another guy out there that does not drink any tea or coffee!
no-one really give me feedback on my little channel... well never good feedback! lol, but I wanted to say that you have made the transition from the project based content, to "tour guide" and more, as you have progressed with the boat build, and honestly I love it! well done to both of you, and I was worried about how this would go for you! but I like this format!
Expensive South West Ireland !
Hi , GREAT TO SEE YOU ARE BOTH FEELING BETTER , enjoying your last few hours in Ireland , fair winds on your trip to France .
You guys are great and that honey chicken looked delicious. Really enjoy your sailing / land venture videos.
So happy for your both that you found each and are out exploring after all that hard refit work
Great to be seeing the world that opens up to you on your voyages. Palm trees .. I can just look over the fence to my neighbours yard. With those tropical islands, come mosquitos, sand flies, deadly jelly fish, sharks 34°C at midnight, 98% humidity, otherwise all good.
Now Mads read this. When you get seasick you have a stiff neck and your head is moving around with the boat, whereas Ava is letting the boat move and is at one with the horizon. Be at one with the horizon and let the boat go. Sitting under a tree helps too. The Mister Magoo false horizon glasses, made in France, can help. Feel free to ignore my advice and continue to give those fish their daily feed.
I loved the video and the interaction you are doing with the viewer. Thanks!
Nice Sunday viewing as always ☺️
I'm sure you know already but ferns are one of the most ancient plants on earth.
Also I'm sure you don't know but fuschias were one of the first plants I could name thanks to my Grandmother. She was born in 1897 and died in 1998! My Grandad was born in 1895...
Nice job on this film. Loved the ferns.
loved the trips this week
Your videos are getting better and better! I love your content. Thanks for sharing. 🇨🇦
Love your fun and informative style.
Really enjoyed your Ireland travelogue! Look forward to the next adventure!
Like the information you give on the places you’re visiting. Makes rainy day videos a lot more interesting 🤔 Keep up the good work. 👍
A nice episode again. The flowers on the island are called fuchsia in holland. Have a nice week.
Great vid you two! Really enjoy the virtual sight seeing around Ireland and else where so far! Keep up the awesome work!
Just arrived at Gosport Marina, making dinner, having a beer. This will make for proper dinner entertainment!
Yorkshire Tea is fine, but it depends on the water, it works in Yorkshire, strangely enough and other areas, including where I am in NE Scotland, but hey it;s all about personal taste, enjoy whatever you prefer, take care MadAva
thanks, love the DIY and love the glimpeses into your life on board together :) the challenges of being self sufficient and life aboard. Keep on sailing
Those pendant flowers are one of the fuchsia species - pron. like FEW-shah (in the UK at least). My parents have several types, the bees love them.
See you👍🏽
For me your transition from rebuild to sailing is going great. Just need a Ava and Mads fitness channel. Keep well and stay safe.
PG tips , the only way to go !
Great job guys. Loved it. And so few channels cover on board exercise. (Except for that scene on Mutiny on the Bounty). So nice that you touched on that.
Small alcohol stove may be good solution to boiling kettle, and good emergency backup in case some problems with electric.
Might already be in the comments, I tried to skim but didn't see...
If you have an iphone, if you take a picture of the flower, then view it, there is a little "i" with a circle around it and stars... it'll "attempt" to auto identify the flower/plant.. I love the feature.
11:10 - This is the most hilarious editing job. Nice work! 🤣
