Detroit Fire Department - Devil's Night 2023 Engine 44 Stretching on a Dwelling - Fully Involved

- Devil's Night 2023, a box alarm assignment was struck for Golden Gate and John R. Engine 44 upon arrival reported a dwelling fire, fully involved. Engine 56 dropped the monitor, and crews setup Ladder 18 for aerial operations.
Crew ran into low water pressure while battling the fire. Firefighters protected the Bravo Exposure.
Neighbors reported the vacant dwelling was used by squatters in the neighborhood.

To all those Monday morning firefighters out there, this was a vacant building. Once verifying no one was inside, they let it go while protecting exposures. The city will most likely be responsible for clean up. So the more that burns the less to clean up. If you disagree then maybe you should go through the hell we do all the time!

I read elsewhere that it’s Detroit policy to let these abandoned buildings burn to the ground, to just keep the fire from spreading to other buildings. If that is still the case, there is no reason to criticize the firefighting techniques.
Wow that place was going end to end, glad that it was a vacate building and hopefully there were no injuries to anyone related to this incident.

Yeah if it is abandoned and is burning, protect the neighbors and let it go all the way. Since there is no shelter you will not get a relight from a homeless trying to get warm or a crime/ drug den and other problems.

Im not crticizing just have a question. Many times all over theres a problem with water pressure. I thought they check hydrauts on a regular basics. What causes this?
Water pressure problems can be caused by lots of issues, from trucks using more water than the lines can handle, to the city system not having enough static water pressure.
Do they even try to deal with something like this, or do they just protect the exposures and let it go ? There doesnt look like there would be much point in trying to save it when it is that far gone.
At the beginning of this video, crews dumped their engine water to see if they could reset the fire. Typically, if that doesn't work the fire is too involved.

You can hear it in the video where they were instructed to let it burn. That is the New Fire Chiefs policy to deal with the many vacant houses in Detroit and the arson that come about from them.
Too bad the deck gun didn't work. Definitely would have made a big difference.
It’s a vacant. When a vacant structure catches fire in Detroit, they normally just protect the exposures and let the structure go because most of these vacant houses are either already too far gone to fix and it becomes a tear down anyway if someone were to buy the property. However, most of them are never ever lived in again. So either way, no point in saving it.
Probably 30-40 yrs back this was a well maintained property and a home. Sad.
30-40 years ago it was probably a barely-maintained home. Detroit has been a mess for a long time.

Clearly, they gave up on the structure early on. Not enough water anywhere. And the ladder truck seems useless. Just sayin’!
They let'em burn down in Detroit if they're vacant.
Policy dictates that if the building is confirmed abandoned by either the truck or squad company, crews will surround and drown it. There is zero reason to risk lives fighting in an abandoned building.
You would think they would put the pipe up to protect the bravo exposure instead of trying to protect it with multiple handlines??? I really hate to state an armchair opinion but based on observation I would say chief 8 is probably counting his days to retirement?

Detroit doesn't put out fires in abandoned houses. They control the fire so it won't spread to surrounding structures. If they put the fire out and the building is left standing, someone will set it on fire again.
