Detroit Fire Department - Engine 34 Stretching on a Dwelling

- After returning from the previous fire on Washburn, we saw a large amount of smoke south of Livernois and I-96. Upon arrival, a vacant dwelling on Whitfield Street, at Joy Road. Engine 34 stretched, with Engine 39 dumping the monitors. With the front roof collapsing upon arrival, Chief called a defensive stance and Ladder 22 was setup. This video covers the progression of the fire, and fire behavior throughout the 25 minutes.
Engine 34, 34, 55, 42, Ladder 22, Squad 4, Chief 5, 7.

Came here for the comments from the UA-cam Fire Department 😂😂😂
Amican béton house fire minim
Abandoned houses in Detroit used as a training tool!
Abandoned structure, let it burn but keep it controlled. No point in making a push or anything.
It looks like they are still doing the ( let it burn ) system since there was little effort to extinguish the original fire ?
Always suspicious when you pull up to a fully involved house fire where there are household belongings sitting on the front lawn....
Those aren’t belongings, it’s piles of garbage. There are huge piles of garbage along the curbs all throughout the city. Illegal dumping is a huge problem in Detroit.
I saw that they backed a truck to move the ladder truck in closer and I believe it had a snorkel on it so why bother having a ladder truck if you're not going to use it like it should have been I seen that they finally put it up but a long time ago they should have used it it wouldn't have burned so much if they would have used it but what do I know I was a volunteer firefighter for 30 years
These firefighters know whats up there not even gonna risk there lives for this bullcrap.
The FD about let the house burn down before they got enough and the right type of equipment on scene. Hoses from the ground don't do much on a fire of this type.
That's what I was thinking. Deck gun? Bucket ladder?
Did you not see the deck gun deployed? And the fact that you called it a bucket ladder tells me everything I need to know about you and your lack of firefighting knowledge.
@@cjritchie9701 It took 3 minutes after the first engine arrived to get water on the fire, and it wasn't even the first arriving engine that made the first attack. That's pretty bad.
Just like the rest of the nation even Detroit has gotten into the action of increased real estate prices. I have been eying Detroit for a bit as I am getting ready to sell my real estate in Texas which has gone through the roof. It is my back up plan but I probably will move to New Mexico. Things seem to be finally turning around for Detroit and the days of abandoned houses will probably come to an end in the not too distant future.
Deadly cycle of house price increase then mass migration to a dying town then another mass housing price increase. how long can it go? Is it sustainable?
Reminds you of how good they used to build things here in America. Both of those chimneys were stout!
In any place and time chimneys are not only stout, but also non combustible...
Should have ran a supply line to the deck gun until the ground crew got organized. The deck gun was doing a good job knocking it down, but with limited water your SOL. Wtf 3 hand lines don’t they have aerials or master streams of some kind.
As long as there is a charged supply line hooked up to the engine , the deck gun has water, if not the deck gun will empty the 500 gal tank in about 30 seconds.
Oh look... yet another wannabe deck gun warrior from the YouToob FD
Too bad you weren't there to tell them what to do 🤡
They must not want to put it out that bad nobody’s side with a hose
It would. Have been contain with deck gun then hand lines
I watched a documentary last week & if it’s abandoned they let them burn if it’s safe to do so
Looks like another property owner will be receiving a insurance settlement check.
Ya...the bank!
Sad, at one time that was someone’s pride and joy. I take it they just let those burn in a controlled fashion?
The deck gun would have been the best do get a good handle on that
Yet another wannabe deck gun warrior 🤣
Is the quickest and best asset any fire department could have. I think all truck should be equipped with them.
@@beckytwister01
Nonsense... they are of limited use at best
But thanks for proving you've never been an actual firefighter
@@virgilhilts3924
Actually no they're not of limited use. They should be used more. You have no clue on my history of employment, skill or training. So STFU 🖕
@@virgilhilts3924 pissing on it clearly works….
Don’t they have real, big hoses?
protect the exposure and let it burn.
Alot of arson in detroit
Damn!! That was fierce!! Refused to be put out!! Never seen 1 that strong and determined!!
The first house is a LOOSER, its gone. Let it go. Protect Exposures, Let it go and you wont have to come back.. Detroit fights more fire than you have ever fought. they know what works for them.
The rare thing had been it where controlled with those streams washing the smoke, vaporizing even before touching it, some 400-500 gpm in total, enough for supplying the deck gun. A 400-500 gpm stream can penetrate the flames and lower the temperature to sub pyrolisis...that´s the main "trick" of fire control.
Did they choose let it burn??
Your always welcome to try it foir your self, do you think it’s that easy buddy?
Took too long
Awesome deck gun use
I would like to work in Detroit, I am a firefighter in Puerto Rico, how can I request a transfer? I lived in Detroit
They forgot to throw the trash on the fire.
Oh at the end of the vid they got a tower ladder.. my bad 🔥.. prayers for all ✝🙏🇺🇸
❤ I am so happy to be able to say thank you for being of service you are the ones to protect and serve the people that you're working for I appreciate you putting your life on the line to save and protect other people
WHY ARE THEY NOT USING THE TOWER!!! 19 MINS. SUCKS!!
Midwest BBQ? 2bad this happened to such a beautiful, well-built building.
They look like they aren’t really trying to put out the fire. Finally got to the side to fight the fire.
It’s Not at easy as you think
If you check google maps the building was occupied a year ago. 5564 Whitfield was a decent looking home a short time ago...
Yes, it appeared like the house was evicted with all the tenants belongings out on the curb on the night of the incident.
Should just let those abandoned houses burn. They just get lit over and over
Looks like something you expect to see on "Hell Night".
Devils Night
The house to the left looks to be boarded up and vacant. Surprised that that house also didn't go up in flames.
That fire could’ve been put out much easier if they were not playing with the hoses, moving them up and down so fast when they could just concentrate on certain section, bouncing it off a window frame or a wall section
At the beginning the engine attacked the fire with the deck gun, but then, for some reason the video skipped ahead, and the engine had stopped using the deck and everybody’s just standing around. What’s up with that? The deck gun could’ve put out 90% of that fire.
Where is your from at u need to use it now ,
Interesting sums it up.😮
They should have used the deck gun. The most under used tool in the FD.
Foolish nonsense spoken by people who have zero experience fighting fires
But it's clear you enjoy making yourself look foolish so not at all a surprise
Absolutely
@@joeg9540
Absolutely... not 🤣
@@virgilhilts3924 🤡 go piss on it for them LilGuy
Seemed innefective
First arriving engine had the opportunity to use the deck gun. In less than a minute he could’ve had that fire almost knocked down.
I swear that so many departments avoid using the deck gun. What do they think it’s an ornament? 🤔
seems funny that there is a lot of Disgared stuff by the roadside, ya can't burn brick!!! As the song goes}}}}}}} This house has Bones & I wonder the tales it could tell!
see the side door wide open , set fire and run ! Shame that they burned it even though it was vacant. Looks like it just got displaced as furniture and garbage at the curb. Hmm , didn't pay rent ...got evicted and then it burns down ? insurance or madness ?
Being Detroit these departments spend more time on abandoned structure fires than actual lived in dwellings, and that is a shame because while they are fighting these a family is losing their home. And the city and state government do NOTHING to help these departments, just disgusting to even think about what these people go through every shift.
What's being Detroit have to do with fires,Joe?
@@jeromewade4110 Mostly all the empty homes, commercial buildings that owners were not able to either sell or continue to pay for. And for me that is really a shame because people who owned these building have worked hard to purchase them or pass them down to family members, but the big companies move to lower income countries and families find it harder to keep up with payments for these buildings. I have seen several videos like this and documentaries about empty buildings being called in on fire, and the department's equipment being outdated or needing to be replaced/repaired but no funds available to do it. I would like to see the city to go back to the way it was with big companies producing American made products, and people of the city being paid proper wages for the work they do. I believe the state and the city need to get together and rehab these buildings and help families rebuild their lives and start from fresh, and bring the city back up, well at least that is my hope and not see these firefighters have to risk lives fighting fires of buildings that have been abandoned. Nothing against the people who are still trying to work and survive in the city itself because I myself wish them the best, I just wish government officials would open their eyes and come up with solutions instead of sitting back and ignoring the problem.
@@josephbrown822 I remember news 4 covering a station last year that didn’t have a working furnace in the middle of winter.
@@user-qh4dn8ke6xlmfao, this guy is from UK for sure, do you want us to use those little mini vans that you call firetrucks?
American houses, made of wood, set them on fire - let 'em burn.
Big house, big fire, little water! Deck gun it..
Holy crap at 3:16 the trash pile is smoking!!
How does someone just happen to be in the right area to film a house fire before the companies get dispatched???
Alex Jones covered this story .
Methods of attack is piss poor
This is a drill right?
To long to get water on fire. Did they have trouble with the water supply?
clearly a deck gun attak should have been deployed
Clearly you have no clue what you are talking about
great video
Thank you! More to come.
Where are the towers okay!
FD just going through the motions?😂
Only then they use one on this incident not at first
My friend drives a school bus. I hope this never happens to him.
What …?
God Bless you Detroit Fire.. but those little garden hoses ain’t workin.. need a TOWER LADDER.. prayers for anyone , pets, people, injured or killed ✝🙏✝
House was vacant
Fire depth was very slack in not using deck guns on a house fire so out of control couple of the hoses for inch and a halfs not enough water pressure at all very poor use of what water they had
@Philip Farrell
Thanks for confirming that you have no clue what you are talking about 🤣
And you wouldn't know a garden hose from ur penis
I d like to know why they didnt use several tower ladder trucks on this incident to get it under control even have mutual aid from other depts helping out
Nothing to save so let it burn itself down. Looked like an abandon house from all the crap piled up on the curb. Seems to happen a lot in Detroit. Don't tie up your resources on something like this.
Because you weren't there to tell them how to do their job
Well they dont need coaching from me to do their job as they should already be trained to do it
They have many of these a day and are the national experts on how to handle them. They didn't use several tower ladders because most of them are needed at the other fires. Google Detroit fires if you don't know the story.
@@shawnc1016 there are other dept that have them that can lend assistance to them meaning there are other fire dept s in that vicinity of Detroit who can help in the form of mutual aid dont need to be a rocket scientist to figure that one out
This is an example of why you lay in and use big streams on big fires. Sad this a paid department. Do better Detroit. 3 hand lines all frontal attack, no master streams and no aerials.
They're letting it burn and protecting the house next to it
Detroit fire department was founded in 1860. They’ve been fighting fires like this since the early 70s and since you know nothing about the city of Detroit and how we fight fire there is probably best you just watch the video and move considering that we do 10 to 15 every single night.
