Greetings from Port Washington, WI in the USA. I've been gardening for over 65 years and in all that time have never grown Dahlias. Your spectacular video has inspired me to try something new in my adage. Now I just need to tap into the amazing energy you and Richard have. You make quite a team! Thank you so much for all the beautiful inspiration you give us. I love your channel.
Your videos are so educational. Your colorful computer plans must be so helpful! Not to mention how helpful your husband is! Wish I had found your site earlier as I’m only in my second year of dahlia gardening. We will be planting out this weekend in Connecticut, NE USA. Thanks for all the info!
My Grandpa, as a retired 🇦🇺 farmer, loved growing dahlias…..I’m now under the influence 😀of your wonderful garden and am going to plant some next season, and in remembrance of him
Oh, Annette it is going to be so beautiful. You've thought it all out so marvelously and your color combinations are brilliant! I love to watch you and Richard working together ❤️ . You both bring so much love to that garden and it really shows. Such sweet, hardworking people.
What an incredible amount of work you put into your dahlia borders! No wonder they look so fabulous! The dahlia tours are what hooked me on this channel.
Wow Annette, I dream of being as organized as you on my garden planning. I will have to look back at your winter videos to see how you grow your seeds. I love your screen shots with the pics!!!
Your garden is already beautiful, just like you I am looking forward to see all the wonderful flowers. The color scheme is very much the same I have in my garden in France.
Goodness, that was a ‘tour du force’! You and Richard make an amazing team. I’m awed at how organised you are with your border planning. It will look stunning! By the way Annette, is your garden on the National Garden Scheme? If not, you absolutely should get it included. If you had an open day I’d drive from the northwest of England to visit it!
Thanks so much Elie. Wow! No, we're not part of the scheme yet - I don't feel the garden is quite ready because there is so much mess and unprepared beds that you don't see on film! It's definitely an aspiration though - hopefully in a year or 2 😁
Well done Annette and Richard. I bet you are looking forward to what will be a stunning display. I planted my annuals out yesterday, in the cutting bed, rudbeckia, Nicotiana, antirrhinums, ammi majus, peony flowered poppies, comos varieties, asters duchess, calendula, bupleurum, cornflowers, papaver rhoeas, Amaranthus and malope. Tomorrow it's the planting of the dahlias, - got the bed ready for them today. We have had a fair bit of rain which has washed all the plants in nicely. Today I planted out more veg, namely swede, komatsuna, shallots and blue kale. It's such an exciting but demanding time of year. Happy gardening to you both 🙂 x
Thanks Be, and thank you for the support! I still have so much planting to do and it's taking time away from filming but I will do a bit catchup soon. I can't wait to see the flower beds this year - I've never had so many dahlia tubers!!! 😁
I like your ideas of the planning and spread sheet. I need to take the time during the winter season and work on that. For three years now I've just been moving plants around like a designer squirrel or something. Haha. Your garden is going to be beautiful. 😊
😂, yes Vickie, it does take some time to work it all out but I enjoy the process and I have SO many dahlias that I really need to be organised otherwise it'll just look a mess and that would annoy me 😂
Oh wow! I love that you geek out with planning! I'm the same :) I have a spreadsheet for our veggies and flowers and 23 acres with sheep, naughty goats, naughty free-range chickens and llamas. I thought I was a geek with spreadsheets and planning. You clearly surpass me. Please do a video on your planning sheets. I'm in awe and want to start panning right now for cool weather and next spring/summer/fall. Zone 9b (Northern California). Growing dahlias for the first time this year :) Plus adding lots of perennials and annuals. We are finally out of the drought for 2 years straight. Now it's time to have fun with flowers and beautification! Long time coming for my dream of beauty around here.
Hi Heather, yes, I'm a spreadsheet nerd - I love to be organised and I like to be able to visualise it all so seeing it written down or in pictures really soothes my mind. 23 acres is a lot to manage! You will love dahlias - they really do add so much to a garden. 😁🌸
Annette and Richard, your team effort is creating a fantastic range of planted areas that are going to look beautiful. I can't wait for the tours where you show us the fruits of all you effort. Thank you. X
I'm so glad I found you this year. I have never planted dahlias and will never have a brilliant selection like yours. But I decided to give it a go and went to a discount stor and got a pack of 3 bulbs of dinnerplate dahlias - Akita (a 44inch orange with yellow center beauty) and right out of the dusty pack I have 4 bulbs with 3 good shoots. I broke off one and had it growing in a glass of water but I just stuck it in one of the pots setting by my garlic. In 2 -3 weeks I'm going to just plant them amount my veggies. Next year I plan to get 2 more pack after overwintering what ever I keep going this year. I'm so excited to see how your borders look. Maybe next year I will have a small flower bed. Thanks again for the inspiration!
Oh god you're about 2 weeks ahead of me but it's been raining dreadfully and windy. Still they are shooting from the tubers now so fingers crossed they'll be stunning. Already we have mystic spirit doing really well so from one we manged to get either 2 or three from last year because we also got a bicolour with copper foliage so we don't know which is which till it flowers (lebels fell off) and I've also ordered some tubers from a dealer and then passing through B&M they've put their tubers down to £1.50 and they had some fire pot dahlia tubers so I grabbed them because it's a gorgeous colour and shape. So we shall see but for £1.50 ... like a feral biddy at a church jumble sale 😅
Hi Adam, we've had horrendous days of constant rain - it's been awful weather so far this year. £1.50 a tuber is an incredible bargain. - well done! 🌸🌸🌸
Hi Sally, yes, I stake the taller dahlias - a new video will come out when they've grown a bit but you can find my old method on my channel in the 'Dahlias' playlist.
You have put in so much work into designing a beautiful dahlias border. Can't wait for your dahlias to bloom. Your garden will be awesome, full of bright colors!!! Do you order the dahlias tubers online? You have so many different varieties. Thank you for showing us your beautiful project.
What is the spreadsheet you work with? I love that you do that. It is my first year planting and I have a whole heap of plants in no particular groupings which may be an eyesore. Im in Sydney Australia and this will be my first Spring Summer observing my plants... of course my garden isn't as big as yours and no where near organised :) Love your work and passion for the garden, regards Nilgun. p.s. Richard you're a LEGEND!
Thank you Nilgun. I use Microsoft Excel and also an App on my MAC called Miro. It's like a huge workspace. I think it's super useful for being able to see everything at once. But it's no good at all for sorting stuff out - very cumbersome so that's why I also use Excel.
Gorgeous planting colours it will look absolutely glorious when it's all in flower 😍 never thought of organising my colours like that! You've definitely inspired me! May I ask a rather random question? I have 2 cats like you, and I'm a bit worried about planting out my tomato plants in case they try to eat them. The variety I have some can stay in my tiny green house and others will be much too big! Do you have any issues with your cats eating plants and being ill?? Thank you ❤
Thank you Louise. Yes, I can't wait for the colours! I've never had any issues at all with cats eating my tomatoes - they show no interest in any of my plants other than the grasses. 😊😻😻😻
Hi Elizabeth - I don't know the brand - we just searched online and bought it from an irrigation company. We don;t actually use it that often - just when the weather gets really hot - our garden is south facing and has very little shade at the moment until the trees and shrubs settle in.

So nice of you Jill. Thank you! Hope you have many years of joy from your gardening with dahlias 😁🌸
Not only are you a good gardener but your computer skills are amazing. Your garden just gets better and better.

Thank you Catherine, I'm so happy to be able to share our garden. And 'hi' to you in Connecticut! 👋🏼😊

Thank you so much Carol. I love every minute of it 😁
Wow Annette, I dream of being as organized as you on my garden planning. I will have to look back at your winter videos to see how you grow your seeds. I love your screen shots with the pics!!!
Thanks Lisa. Being organised is in my nature - I love to do it, which is quite fortunate considering how many dahlia varieties I have 😂
Your garden is already beautiful, just like you I am looking forward to see all the wonderful flowers. The color scheme is very much the same I have in my garden in France.
Thank you so much! I love the gentle shades and soft pastel colours 😊🌸

@@cottoverdi Beautiful!
Brilliant ideas! I’m doing all these organizing my plants on a spreadsheet with colors too.
My yard is 1.4 acres. It’s hard to keep it organized!

Can’t wait to see the garden in August and September ! 💐

Sorry, can’t wait! Do you have to stake the dahlias?
Hi Sally, yes, I stake the taller dahlias - a new video will come out when they've grown a bit but you can find my old method on my channel in the 'Dahlias' playlist.
Go, Richard! ❤ Beautiful color schemes ❤ loves it!

That's really good to know thank you!!! I'd better make some space for some tomatoes 🍅
Interested in your irrigation ,what brand please .lovely garden
