Big Sam is several times the manager Southgate is. Sam has actually played some interesting, innovative football in his time which has gotten the best out of mercurial talents. Any interesting, exciting bits of football under Southgate has pretty clearly been individual talent shining despite him.

I dont disagree that we should have done better but Serbia low key have a stacked squad though; mitrovic, vlahovic, milinkovic savic, tadic, kostic, jovic, milenkovic, etc are all very good players.

In a yugoslavic team Oblak would start in goal and maybe Dzeko at striker but tbh I think I'd stick with vlahovic and mitrovic personally, other than that no changes.

Serbia has underperformed, but as you say, some very good players. They might well prove to be the second best team in the group.

many teams who won played poorly initially. Same with e.g. Portugal in Euro 2016. 3rd in their group... truth is, it means nothing in a cup tournament, if you play well the remaining games
The difference is that Argentina rallied together because they were coming in red hot form after an undefeated run, the defeat to Saudi Arabia woke them up and made them play differently with grit and play together to suffer in grueling matches and learn how to fight back, especially against the likes of the Netherlands and France.
England are always arrogant and this defeat does nothing for them because they played awfully but still won.
That defeat to Saudi Arabia was vital for Argentina's win, it was a wake up call to Scaloni to change things up and it completely worked in the long run

Except Lionel Scaloni had won Copa America before and knew how to win trophies. Southgate hasn't won a major trophy or played attractive football in 18 bloody years !!! And if anybody says otherwise, it’s just “England hatred”, and they’re “being hated for supporting their country”. I disagree with the midfield. Both rice and bellingham have the stature and defensive capabilities to operate as a double pivot and control games. Bellingham has showed several times for Real that he can make clean tackles and bring the ball forward. It was what he was doing for Dortmund for 3 years before leaving. Playing as an 8 would still allow him to make late runs into the box and score and wouldn’t take away from his dribbling ability (think gundogan at man city). Foden would be alot more comfortable being able to play on the half turn and move freely as a 10. He offers so much creativity, service, and is a goal scorer running through the middle for City so playing him elsewhere robs the england team of a real weapon. Southgate playing him on the left makes him easy to defend and leaves the team unbalanced. Both gordon and eze can play on the wing so calling them up only to play trent alongside rice is a typical daft decision by southgate.

Rob Edwards would do a decent job for England. He so nearly kept up Luton Town, and, more importantly, is well-rated by other coaches - you could see his players improving steadily through the season for a Club that had just 2 experienced Premier League players in Barkley and Townsend in the squad. You could also see his players never gave up in a match and would always try. I really hope he gets a call from one of the bigger Clubs soon - he would have been a brilliant fit for Brighton or West Ham, for example. Southgate got relegated too, but his Middlesbrough side were really poor and got spanked a few times, whereas Luton would often push other teams quite hard and had a few very narrow losses.

Exact scoreline they stated with in the last Euros. Which was their 1st opening game win at any Euros ever. They drew their 2nd game 0-0 vs Scotland and made the final. As an England fan, I have to say that Gareth was trying to play more attacking football this time, so I'm not going to blame him but I am blaming the players, Kane and Foden were not feeling it so they should have been subbed like Saka when he was getting marked and blocked the second half and then replaced with Bowen, who was making strides since coming on, Kane and Foden should have been subbed off for Toney or Watkins and Palmer or Gordon

foden needs to be in that 10 role. that freedom to drift around and make magic is where he does best. southgate gave bellingham that role, which isn’t necessarily a bad decision but i truly believe that making bellingham play in a box to box role and telling rice to sit as a destroyer then foden would be allowed the space to thrive in a true 10 role.
