    I think a lot of people forget that in the 2008 video, Ariana ONLY had broadway/theatrical vocal training!! She hadn't really discover "her voice", so to speak. She was mostly just imitating what she heard from her favorite performers of that song (i.e. Idina Menzel). She's not in "vocal decline" she just has a different delivery now that is just as good. I don't know, just something to think about!! :-)

      I've seen people compare these two and say she's declined because she doesn't hold the notes as long (or something along those lines, I'm not a singer so idk lol) but people don't realize too that voices change. I don't know anything about singing but even I know that. She's older here and her voice has naturally lowered and is much more mature. Of course she won't sound the same as when she was a young teenager, but it doesn't mean she's bad at all! She still got out there and belted it out and I love both versions because both are out of this world lol

    Ariana was vocally broadway trained, hence why when she was younger she had a stage voice and can control her ranges perfectly, not so much as a pop voice as she does now since she now sings pop music. Absolutely incredible singer and she should never be underestimated !

    I personally think that Ariana’s vocals have matured in an amazing way. Her control is very good, and her vocals are strong, so that’s really impressive because a lot of artists today don’t have that good of control. She can also switch between head and chest voice smoothly, for example as a visual it would be kind of like a piece of clothing with an almost invisible seam if that makes any sense. Of course it's all subjective but when she's screaming and demonstrating that vibrato that this guy seems to enjoy so much, those notes to me sound like you're stepping on Angry Cats, literally like I want to plug my ears. But I tend to have a more classical taste in music, and I'm sure that many people may enjoy her pop music, so are impressed by these prolonged notes, (and in many ways Whitney Houston did the same thing), it's undeniably a _talent_ , does that make it pleasing to the ear?
      *Not for me*.
      I honestly think she will go the way of Britney, Christina, and so many cute pop starlets that come and go until the next new young cute one comes along. im still so confused when people say her voice is declining. she has more of a pop sound now than she did before because she has found her own, newer "pop sound". when she was younger she was obviously trained for broadway, not pop. She is so constantly amazing with her live performance and i personally think she is one of the best, if not the best pop vocalist now. but with this performance my only grievance is her breath support. there were some awkward pauses for a breath and yes obviously she couldn't hold the entirety of the note at the end but she's so vocally talented with her riffs, range, and power that honestly idgaf im not talented enough to judge her lmao

    • @aaliyahfoster2705
      @aaliyahfoster2705 5 років тому +2

      For me (preference), one of the stylistic choices I think that keeps pushing and pulling me to and away from her is enunciation. It's like sometimes she sings in a head voice through much of a song to the point some of her lyrics sound like operatic gibberish to me (The Way, Focus, Thank U Next, Thinking Bout You, One Last Time, Break Free, and Problem as the biggest offender). And then I personally find the songs that she sings with total control of her enunciation as some of her best work and most emotionally entrancing (God Is A Woman, Breathin, No Tears Left To Cry, Greedy, Dangerous Woman, Side To Side, Best Mistake). As for vocal decline, that's a complete lie especially since her most recent album is one of her most vocally fluctuating work yet. I also just listened to Love Me Harder from My Everything and then Breathin from Sweetener and you can definitely tell her technique has gotten dramatically better.

    • @queenofvegas8761
      @queenofvegas8761 5 років тому +1

      @@aaliyahfoster2705 actually no. It's not a stylistic choice to have bad enunciation. Bad enunciation is the result of lots of jaw tension, which she developed over time from trying to do fast runs. And also no, her voice is in decline. She has no breath support in the 5th octave and her highest belted note is a b5, which is sad. She's also a light lyric soprano so in theory she should be able to support and resonate at least a d5, but no, she drops support at bb4. Stop being in denial.

      also people are completely taking each video out of context, because in the young clip, its literally just a teenager casually performing to a seemingly small audience with no consequences (i.e. there's really no pressure on her to deliver such a performance), whereas the new one is her on stage on frickin TV singing in front of actual fans of the musical as well as the whole world. there's a completely different expectation and pressure on these performances. not to forget shes had 10 years of life in between both performances with countless years of grueling touring and performances as well as just natural vocal development and fatigue. It just seems weird that people would compare someone's singing ability of performances with a 10 year age gap. Of course people are gonna perform differently from age 15-25.

      pennylane36 Ariana started her career on Broadway. This was a 15th anniversary celebration and they wanted there to be a variety of sounds and versions of the music so I’m sure she chose to make it more pop-ish bc she sings pop. But she can and knows how to sing Broadway. She had a few moments here that sounded more like how the song would be sung by an actress on stage. This actually proved to me that she totally can sing this role 🤷🏼‍♀️

      People say the same things about Idina when she sings broadway songs off-broadway at her concerts. I've seen people say that about her concert renditions of Defying Gravity, but like... she's not playing Elphaba when she's giving concerts, so of course she's not going to sing like she is. She's putting on a concert. Ari's no different. She wasn't singing on broadway here, she was putting on a show, so naturally she's going to sing that way. If she was on broadway (and she could be!) then she'd sing it like a broadway star would!

    The main difference between her voice then and now, as you mentioned, is where she chooses to place her resonance. In the most recent performance, she has vastly warmed up her tone and given it such a darker quality, which makes it much more contemporary sounding. I personally PREFER the older version, since I love a super bright musical theater style voice, with lots of nasal resonance, and I think just a little more brightness in the newest version would have been really nice, but she's certainly not in a vocal decline. I think by being able to dramatically change the styling of the song, she's just showing off her vocal maturity and control.

    I also cried so you know I feel you, Tristan! Hearing how much her voice has matured and how much she has grown as a vocalist in not being afraid to change things up and add something to a song is truly amazing to see. I love love love pop Ariana but Broadway Ariana just makes my heart glow.

    Just remember age can change your voice. It’s normal to sound different and hit different notes to when you were younger. Does that mean she’s declining? I don’t think she is.

    I literally teared up on that last note too. Like she’s honestly so freaking talented it’s crazy when ppl say that the talent of singers as a whole has gotten worse over the years and maybe that’s true to some extent bc now we hear anyone & everyone sing who thinks they can, but also I honestly think we have some of the most INSANE live vocalists around today. I love your videos and it’s teaching me so much and giving me new opinions. I love it. Thanks boo😘

    This is suuuuch an amazing performance, I actually prefer her "lower" voice it sounds more mature and diva-ish
    Also I think saying that an artist's voice hasn't matured or evolved is the worst you could do because no one is perfect at the beginning, staying stuck and not evolving is just not good, everyone evolve, try new things, artists too
