Hey, I've got another one: catch up with MacMost tutorials on Mac subjects where I need to learn or to have my partial knowledge refreshed! There's always something new that I learn from each wonderfully compact tutorial, even on subjects which I think I know all about already. Thanks, Gary!
YES! I agree Gary has helped me so much with using my Mac at my WFH job. Thanks to the channel-I multitask better and don’t have to worry about daycare. (Which is a Godsend for a single mom like me!) Gary is over here doing the Lord’s Work.
Thanks, Gary! This reminded me of life before the internet, when I spent a lot more time tidying up my hard drives, writing, editing, photoshopping, etc.
Hi Gary. Thank you so much for this. I didn't know I was bored but here I am, learning new ways to amuse myself (or learn) when bored! In addition to your excellent list, I like to use "Image Capture" on my Mac with my printer, putting a printed paper item on the printer glass then scanning my paper into an organized folder layout on my Mac (which syncs with my iPad, iPhone, etc). Over the last few years, I've been whittling down the ridiculous amounts of paper I (used to) hoard, and now have an instantly obtainable, universally available library of these old papers. It has simplified my life immeasurably. I've taken it slowly, while requesting paperless statements from all my credit cards, bank statements, news clippings, etc. until now when paper is almost at zero. I hope this helps someone, the way you've helped me. Thank you!
Wow, Gary, that's incredibly helpful. You are a wealth of knowledge, and I can always pick up new tips from you. To put it simply, you are a fantastic human being.
Thank you Gary. A wealth of useable ideas. One addition would be any of the number of typing practice apps. Several are free and they are for both the MacBook and the iPhone (one that I have on my iPhone is Speed Typer.) I would recommend a person know what they want to improve (speed, accuracy, etc.) and try a few out. The interfaces are different and so one program will work better for different individuals. Typing is a skill that will translate into saved time in MANY environments. Nothing is more precious than time.
@@TM-vg4mx I have tried several and recommend that you do also. They have different features and strengths (speed, accuracy, etc.) It also depends on your operating OS. I am still on Catalina and the one that I last was using was NCH Software's KeyBlaze Typing Tutor on my Mac which emphasizes speed improvement. Some are free and some come with a limited time until upgrade. Either way, the importance of better typing will pay for itself in the end. Note: the Mac and the iPhone use different typing practice apps.
I learned AppleScript much in the manner you describe. I found that I liked it so much I then actually bought a book to go further into it. I did, thankfully; have enough sense to proceed with caution in the beginning. It can be very fascinating and can also enhance your Mac experience.
Great video as always. I rarely have down time during the workday, but the next time I do, I'm going to look into lectures. I never realized they existed on podcasts, but will now start going through some. Thanks very much for this!!
I installed Open Office on my MacBook Pro and created a database to catalog my DVD/Blue Ray collection. Always seeking knowledge and skills. Keeps me active in my Golden Years.
I don't want to use the word 'bored'. Instead, I use the words 'free time'. In my free time, I do these on my MacBook: 1. Editing photos (usually I prefer to do this on my iPhone or iPad) 2. Organizing my files and documents. 3. Locate photos and videos that I can delete to save storage. 4. Find and practice using keyboard shortcuts. 5. Find any hidden tricks or features on MacOS.
I like to go through my calendar and make sure alerts are set for important upcoming events, that I entered them correctly (often done on my phone so typing can have mistakes) and that they're assigned to the right calendar. Also like to clean up the Notes app because I scan a lot of documents on my phone (which works incredibly well if you haven't tried it) and I don't need to save those for more than a couple days.
Don't forget that Krita is also a completely free and surprisingly complete graphic drawing, painting and even animating application, as is the GIMP. Oh, and don't forget Blender for professional level 2D and 3D modeling and animation program with a very capable integrated video editor, also free for the download.
Much like your Photos and GarageBand suggestions, I use my spare time learning all the ins and outs of TextEdit, Preview, Notes and Pages. This alone has made me much more productive. I always start my mornings (after reading Morning Brew) reading Apple News. I don't subscribe to News+ because I already subscribe to many of those magazines. Apple Books is always my goto for whenever I am really bored. I always have about three or four books going at the same time. Kindle is fine, but Books will allow me to continuously scroll through a book which I find much less distracting than Kindle's insisting on actual page-turning.
Your best free bet is to subscribe to Gary's channel here on UA-cam. You can then view his channel and all the videos on it. Spoiler alert: There are sooooooo many!! Many of us have gone over to his Patreon page (he talks about it in the first minute of each video) where you can make a single or a recurring donation to support everything that he does. For paying members he's got loads of extra content, classes you can take, just a ton of good stuff. I have no idea how he keeps up with it all. But make no mistake: He does provide a TON of free stuff as well and is adamant that much of it will remain that way as long as it's feasible for hime to do so. I'm not affiliated with MacMost at all. I, like you, stumbled onto what I knew were exactly the kind of videos I'd want to keep an eye on.
Thanks Gary. Is there a way to know which "users" are not malware from the Activity Monitor? When I open it I see several "users" that I do not recognize and would like to remove but I do not want to remove some program that is actually needed. Thanks!
Unless your Mac has been compromised, then NONE of them would be malware. Do you have any reason to think that your Mac has been compromised? Looking in Activity Monitor won't tell you much about whether you have malware unless you are looking for something specific.
Hi Gary! I never thought I’d need this video more than anything! :p Alright, quick question: what recording software do you use here? I sometimes stream on Facebook (live views of the moon) and my MacBook (i7, 16GB RAM) always ends up with abysmal frame rates (5-10 fps). I use OBS. Can you recommend a better screen recorded/streaming app for a Mac? Thanks!
I don't know if it will work any better but I use ScreenFlow (macmost.com/what-i-use). The problem with screen capturing video is that it is hard to keep up with streaming the video (both directions) and then also capturing and compressing the video at the same time. Plus you aren't capturing the video directly, but the pixels on the screen. For better results you may need to use a video chat system that allows direct recording like Zoom.
@@macmost I never actually used Aperture but didn’t it let you ‘develop’ your RAW files the same way Lightroom does? I used to use Lightroom 6 but you can’t just buy it anymore, now you have to lease it which I hate.

Funny thing is I like watching your videos. I thank you for the gift of knowledge. I have a lot of respect and appreciation for you sir. ;)

i play a tournament soccer game using numbers app when bored 😂😂😂

My Apple Books does not have a Free Books section
Perhaps in a different country? Not sure if it varies by location.
