The only thing I knew about the song is that it was the (original) theme song for the late 80s Vietnam war (although technically it was never categorized as a war here in the U.S.A., since it was never voted on as such by congress) show "Tour of Duty". Great show by the way. Unlike a lot of shows about Vietnam from the 70s and 80s, it didn't portray all of the Soldiers as hopeless scumbags, but showed them as true human beings, with the complexities that brings. It did show the negative aspects, but it also showed all of the positive aspects as well.

They have some lamenting his sad but beautiful songs. "Angie" is a breakup song, while "As Tears Go By" seems to tell from the perspective of an old man lamenting his bygone youth.
The Stones adapted their music as the years passed by went. They started out very bluesy and still in their music roots. As Robert Lee comments below it is about a girlfriend passing away.
This was on of their earlier songs and one of the first songs of their's I knew. It fit my teen angst well. Now as an adult having lost loved ones, it takes on the deeper meaning that it was meant to convey. It is very much how one feels.
About this time, British musicians were becoming deeply interested in the music of the Middle East and India. If you listen you can hear the sounds of the sitar, and the main rhythm is definitely eastern in feeling, You can imagine it playing while a belly dancer performs.
This is almost a theme song for me. 4.5 years ago my wife passed 45 days after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. This song expresses how I have felt and still feel sometimes. I have found much happiness In your reactions.
This song was selected as the theme song for Tour of Duty which was a late eighties show about the Viet Nam War and though the song came out during the war it was written in 1966 at a time when the war was just beginning to elicit intense reactions and over time it started giving the same kind of vibe as other songs like Run Through the Jungle, We Gotta Get Out of This Place, Reflections of My Life and For What It's Worth. It was a time when intense songs were all adopted to fit the mood of the war, even though the original reasons for them may have been something else. And it fit Tour of Duty very well.

The twangy stringed instrument is a sitar. It's an Indian instrument first used in western popular music by The Beatles in the 1965 song Norwegian Wood. The Stones came out with Paint It Black the next year.
The Rolling Stones were the first band to make songs that dealt with the darker side of life, instead of the usual love song dribble. They were the OG Badboys of rock. Back in the day there was the Beatles and the Stones, the Beatles typically were upbeat and fuzzy warm and the Stones were the other side of the coin, raw and real.
Amber you are deep, you get the meanings so quick. The two of you together really make it enjoyable and make me hear the songs fresh. Indian music, the sitar is the instrument you hear.
I'm sooo glad yall reacted to this! Features late founder Brian Jones on Sitar? ZZ Top bassist passed away at the age of 72. Please do "Tush", a song featuring Hill doing lead vocals which he normally didn't do.
This comes from a time, 1966, when groups like The Beatles, The Byrds The Beach Boys and others, not to mention Bob Dylan were getting bored of the conventional styles of music they were playing, and were experimenting with different types of instrumentation and styles of music. Hence the use of the sitar, which had already been used by The Beatles on Norwegian Wood in 1965. This was a very fruitful period of music, and psychedelia was just emerging. The type of drugs they were using, e.g. LSD can not be discounted.
More Stones to react to: "2000 Light Years From Home", "Jumping Jack Flash", "She's a Rainbow", "Nineteenth Nervous Breakdown", "Get Off of My Cloud", "The Last Time", "Mother's Little Helper", "Dandelion", "Monkey Man".
I've been listening to this song for over 50 years and I always thought he was so upset about his love's death he was thinking of suicide. In the song: "If I look hard enough into the setting sun, my love will laugh with me before the morning comes" suggests he was thinking of ending his own life that night.

when he see's girls walk by in their summer clothes, They are usually in light colours, airy or little clothing at all. They are gorgeous, but he is in pain inside and cant look at them because they remind him of the one he lost. He isn't interested in being happy again with someone else. He is consumed by his depression and heart break.
Whoever made this video got the lyric wrong, it's "I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky", not "I don't want to see the sun, flying high in the sky" which makes no sense lyrically. This is supposed to be an "official" Stones lyric video.
This is one of the best lyric videos I've seen. It's so dynamic and the lyrics are presented so well. I was about to compliment how accurate the lyrics were, because almost every lyric video I've seen gets some of the lyrics wrong. But then suddenly, they got it wrong too. It's: I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky. Not: Don't wanna see the sun flyin high in the sky.

Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts has died aged 80 (24/8/2021), R.I.P. you will be missed.
So many great songs came out of the Vietnam era
Jay and Amber, you really nailed the point of this song, I think. I never thought of this before. You picked out the "summer clothes" = bright (happy), and the need (like the lyrics before this part), to "paint it black". Props to you guys; you're really good at this. I will keep following.
Great song. Look at "Satisfaction," "Time is on my side," "She's a Rainbow," "Sympathy for the Devil," and from the 1980s "Start Me Up."
I love "She's a Rainbow." It has a child-like feel but also a serious message about his love for his colourful lady. And the piano is killer.
They have some lamenting his sad but beautiful songs. "Angie" is a breakup song, while "As Tears Go By" seems to tell from the perspective of an old man lamenting his bygone youth.
This is one of my favorite songs by them
One of the best musical depictions of depression I've heard...
Every time I hear this song it reminds me of the movie “Stir of Echoes”
“Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” by The Rolling Stones is a JAM!!
The Stones went to India with the Beatles. picked up the sitar. George Harrison also used it in Norwegian Wood.
The Stones adapted their music as the years passed by went. They started out very bluesy and still in their music roots. As Robert Lee comments below it is about a girlfriend passing away.
This is one of the deepest rabbit holes you could dive into !
This was on of their earlier songs and one of the first songs of their's I knew. It fit my teen angst well. Now as an adult having lost loved ones, it takes on the deeper meaning that it was meant to convey. It is very much how one feels.
Rolling Stones-Start me up and Miss you bangers!
The fact that this came out in the 60s when not a lot of music sounded like this, make it sound so unique.
About this time, British musicians were becoming deeply interested in the music of the Middle East and India. If you listen you can hear the sounds of the sitar, and the main rhythm is definitely eastern in feeling, You can imagine it playing while a belly dancer performs.
Yes I believe it was 1966
I'm glad because I hate it so much
This is my absolute favorite Rolling Stones song ~ Brian Jones plays the Sitar in this one
I had to laugh, never thought I’d hear someone describe a sitar as sounding western.
I highly doubt they know what a sitar is. They've only being doing this for 3 months. They still have a lot to learn.
Brought a smile to my face when he said that.
Though it does have a "twang" so I can see why he'd say that.
Western, as in Sergei Leone. I can kind of see what he means.
Ennio Morricone has eternally associated a whole bunch of unusual musical instruments with the western genre.
This song came out in the Viet Nam era. The black room was where they keep the soldiers coffins for the men who died in.
This track came out when the Vietnam War was still going strong. Imagine it from. The perspective of a returning soldier being shunned by thier peers.
It's about the death of a loved one and nothing to do with Viet Nam.
@@andreaschmall5560 If the lyrics are vague enough, you can make it about whatever you want.
@@marcmarc1967 They are not vague if one actually listens and why would anyone not appreciate the accurate interpretation?
I see a line of cars
And they're all painted black
With flowers and my love
Both never to come back...Poetic but pretty straightforward nevertheless.
Although not about Vietnam, it can be heard in most movies about Vietnam. Whenever I hear this song I think about those movies.
He says the cars are all black; his love is in one, never to come back.....death. -- love y'alls reactions. Watch the Stones Emotional Rescue.
Sympathy for the devil By the Rolling Stones is a must to tie in with this style. Also the Lyrics version is very cleverly done. The song is a history lesson with a message but is a very psychedelic style with some awesome music that I'm sure you guys will love....from a UK subscriber ...keep up the great work
The twangy stringed instrument is a sitar.
You won't find a band like this on this or any other planet we may visit. Beatles were great but a shooting star.stones still rocking.
How do you like late brian Jones, one of founders on Indian sitar.
Then the Beatles did LSD :)
At that point the Stones just became thugs
Ever hear the Shangri-Las?
Amber you are deep, you get the meanings so quick. The two of you together really make it enjoyable and make me hear the songs fresh. Indian music, the sitar is the instrument you hear.
It's the funeral of his dead love. The cars are the cortege.
Yep
Right on Ian!!
Can't you hear me knocking is a great Stones tune..
I'm sooo glad yall reacted to this! Features late founder Brian Jones on Sitar?
ZZ Top bassist passed away at the age of 72.
Please do "Tush", a song featuring Hill doing lead vocals which he normally didn't do.
The first thing I think of when I hear this song is Vietnam. God bless our veterans.
"You Can't Always Get What You Want" is a must. Studio version.
100%..well said
They were also experimenting with different religious beliefs and being influenced by those cultures.
Played a lot during Vietnam War too. Became one of the anthems of that war.
Hard to define a group after only three songs, considering they have been around for almost 60 years.
And all the band members are integral to the Stones sound. Keith’s guitar in particular is just as important as Mick’s vocals!
My husband cannot hear this intro without doing his psycho dance lolol
More Stones to react to: "2000 Light Years From Home", "Jumping Jack Flash", "She's a Rainbow", "Nineteenth Nervous Breakdown", "Get Off of My Cloud", "The Last Time", "Mother's Little Helper", "Dandelion", "Monkey Man".
2000 light years-- super cool dudes. Brian Jones on sound effects.
She's so cold Emotional Rescue and Harlem Shuffle are all favorites of mine from the Stones
I've been listening to this song for over 50 years and I always thought he was so upset about his love's death he was thinking of suicide. In the song: "If I look hard enough into the setting sun, my love will laugh with me before the morning comes" suggests he was thinking of ending his own life that night.
I love the lyric video they are watching--it reminds me of the start of a Tarentino film! (Amazed he didn't use "Paint it Black" in any of his movies.)
"I see a line of cars and their all painted black." Funeral. His love, "never to come back"
Loss, grief...
The Stones truly have many different sounds/moods; have to keep going! Hell, their song “Miss You” is Disco!!🔥
Gotta do “sympathy for the devil”. Same lyrics video required.
"You Can't Always Get What You Want" will blow you away - great Rolling Stones song.
His girlfriend died unexpectedly and the whole song is about his feelings towards that.....This song was very popular with returning shunned Vietnam soldiers...
This was a great song as they were getting older, showin everyone, they are Awesome no matter the age...Timeless...This is written from the viewpoint of a person who is depressed; he wants everything to turn black to match his mood. Thanks Loved it, Much Love, Peace
♥ this song! One of my fave Stones songs! Please check out their song: Waiting on a Friend
also they screwed up a lyric near the end. It should be: I wanna see the sun, blotted out from the sky
Sounds is from a sitar (an India guitar)
The Beatles played the same kind of instrument on the song “Norwegian Wood”
when he see's girls walk by in their summer clothes, They are usually in light colours, airy or little clothing at all. They are gorgeous, but he is in pain inside and cant look at them because they remind him of the one he lost. He isn't interested in being happy again with someone else. He is consumed by his depression and heart break.
You guys are the best thank you for the awesome reactions. I grew up with The Rolling Stones. I think you guys have 1960s and 1970s in your soul!
Whoever made this video got the lyric wrong, it's "I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky", not "I don't want to see the sun, flying high in the sky" which makes no sense lyrically.
This is supposed to be an "official" Stones lyric video.
We just lost drummer Charlie Watts on August 24th..... try "Love Is Strong", and "Hey Negrita"....😉😀
The best Stones track by a million miles. The use of the sitar gives it a whole different dimension.
This is my favorite Rolling Stones song. It makes me think that this song is something Jim Morrison would have done
Exactly - I so agree !!!
Canadian band "The Tea Party' covered this. Their lead singer ,Jeff Martin, sounds ,and even looks ,similar to Jim Morrison.
@@chriso6719 , Eric Burdon and War also did a great cover of this song.
Love this song it reminds me of my dad R.I.P. dad
Want to be surprised by the Rolling Stones? Try "Angie," and the 90's ballad, "Out Of Tears."
Two of tbeir worst Songs. CONGRATS, DUDE
This is a very good example of why, there were Stones people, and Beatles people... Bad boys and girls, listen to the Stones..,.. while the Upper Echelon... For lack of a better word lol, we're into the Beatles!! The stones were just a little DARKER 🖤 LIKE, PAINT IT BLACK 🖤🌹😎
Vietnam. Thats what this song is. If you were 18 to 44 your ass got drafted into a war you didn't want to get involved in. And then everyone that didn't get drafted hated you and labeled you as a murderer. My dad and his 3 brothers went to Nam. My dad was the only one to come back, and he was different afterward. One uncle wad a medic. He got shot in the head by a sniper. My other uncle was a Huey gunner and he died trying to medivac a platoon under fire.
Jay I love watching your journey and growth in different music genres. Life is a kaleidoscope of color. My girl Amber love your joy.
