I am so glad I watched your show! Have been trying to come up with a design for all my scraps.At94 yrs old hard to come up with a plan Thank you, keep up the good work !
I just found your site today and I've watched a couple of your videos. I really like the projects you do and the way you explain them. I'll be back to watch more. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing your ideas with us.
Thank You for your great video & showing how to do the borders. Beautiful! I also did one using a white strip but, I made a 12" block. Working on one now using turquoise strip in the middle. Quilting As You Go on this one. I love string quilts❤
This is great way to use scraps. I made one with lavender down the middle and all kinds of purple in the strips for my niece. She loved it. thanks for making this look so easy.
This is amazing. Simple but well thought out. It just all comes together! The geometric shapes draw me in! I know what I’m doing with my scraps! Thanh you!
Recently was given a bag of scraps. Used them in triangle shapes. 🔺️ 60 degree ruler, Had interfacing as foundation. Did super long piano key effect like here. Made a rable runner, Added a border after attaching with a QAYG method. Things I learned as I progressed. 1. Presort into sizes or colours or both. 2. Iron a big batch at a time. 3. Sew and press ech step as you did here really helps lay things flat especially smaller sizes. 4. Pin where needed for matching, yes thumbs 👍 up 5. Whether you pre design or wing it, have fun. Your design was lovely, any sewing is therapy 6.I never store scraps in a heap, always sorted out and laid flat in sized bags cubes or boxes. It cuts down ironing time by taking the time to sort and store in advance. 7. I learned that by pressing back the latest added strip before cutting will be more accurate and save fabric from making too tiny scraps being left over. 8. Personally i wouldn't have trimmed those muslin squares until after sewing on my strips but i can see reasons why you did it. My project had full coverage not a gap for the white to show. To me you added extra work by trimming twice.
You're awesome! I love how we can all use different methods to get our desired effect. Those muslin squares were a mess I tell you! They were so distorted and probably 20 years old. LOL Thanks for taking the time to reply!
@@revelationquilts I think I would possibly on a smaller scale at first I think as haven't got a sewing machine. I am learning embroidery at the moment so hand stitch everything, which I prefer anyhow but for the bigger jobs can definitely see why you use a sewing machine because of the time it would take otherwise huh
@@revelationquilts I think trying a quilt for a baby for example would be good using your strip fabric method definitely. What material would you recommend using? Cheers
@@laracraft82 Definitely 100% cotton. The style and colors are totally up to you! Using cotton will ensure that your quilt will always wash up nicely and is not stretchy when you sew.
You keep intriguing me with your tutorials. I keep seeing an Attic Windows effect peeking out here and there when the quilt is on the wall. The use of the foundation fabric as a design element is fascinating.
I love the look of this quilt with the framed piano keys. It surprises me that you don't premeasure your border cuts - I'd end up with wavy edges for sure.
I'm not sure what you mean by pre-measuring. I figure out how many inches (or strips) I will need to go all the way around, then round up. I then sew one long strip. Then I sew on the border onto the first side. I cut the end even with the edge of the quilt. Then I do the opposite side. After that I do the same with the top and the bottom of the quilt. I usually square up the quilt before I sew the border on.
@@revelationquilts I measure the top across the center and cut the border to that dimension. If the edge is different, I ease in the difference. When both side borders are attached, I repeat for the other direction.
I am fairly new to quilting. When you said you could employ newsprint, what did you mean? I think of newspapers but I can’t imagine that’s what you meant. Thanks for the clarification.
@@Creative-Chaos Newsprint is a particular type of paper. You can buy it in reams like computer paper, in rolls, in pads. I buy it in reams to use for paper piecing. It has the advantage of tearing more easily than regular printer paper as the weight is different.

Love the quilt and I’ve made several from scraps and like the varying widths. I prefer to measure my border lengths to be the exact length of my quilt and sew them on, so I don’t get wavy borders.
I just finished a string quilt similar to this by Sewing Studio with Gabrielle but with tubes of 2 1/2 in strips and cut into 45 degree triangles, and I did it all in Kaffe, and it turned out just like yours sans the white. Check it out, but your quilt is gorgeous! and thank you for the alternative!
I've made several string quilts, some in black and white with white sashing. (BTW - Your music has several places where the volume goes almost painfully loud and I had to dive for the mouse to turn it off, once at the beginning and during the fast forward.)
String quilts are awesome and a great way to make a dent in my scrap stash. I'm so sorry about the music issue. I'll try to watch that going forward. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I didn't notice it as I was editing the video. Much Love!
I realize these are older videos but I wish you would have turned the block to show each design. I love the rectangle and can’t picture how that layout was achieved.
I had to replay the video to see which layout you were talking about. If you pause it, you can see how the blocks are laid out. I'll admit that particular one took me some time to figure out. I appreciate your feedback. Thank you.
As I was looking in at the quilt, I was envisioning an “I spy” quilt for all of the small triangles in the center of each box. I want to make it using small print children’s fabric just for the corners of each square.
How did you choose your batting and backing for this quilt? I’m almost done with all my 8.5inch squares and are wondering what to do next. Obviously it’s my first quilt and I’m aiming for a generous throw size.
I used my usual batting (80/20). That means 80% cotton & 20% polyester. My backing is the same as my border. It was a 108" fabric with tons of colors. I'll bet yours looks fantastic! Also, congratulations on your first quilt!!
Curious how you finish this. Do you add batting or just a backing, then quilt and bind as usual? Thanks!! It came out beautiful, I will need to try this.
Great way to use up those donated muslins. Can you choose a different filler music for when you are fast forwarding thru the sewing? Sorry, but the frenetic pace is too much for me.
Thank you. I think this is really fun and I have some black to get rid of so I think I will use it as you did the white. I just don't like your music, too loud and also unnecessary for me. Some of your explanations are repeated too much and it makes the process be too slow for me. DO you have another scrap buster for small pieces?
