I’ve never met a string quilt I didn’t like!
I’m the lucky caretaker of an actual 1930s string quilt. The fabrics are absolutely enchanting. (And your examples capture that color palette really nicely!)
I think scrap quilts are the loveliest of all, they make a house a home yet their patterns when complete are not simple but are complex and enchanting. I would like another video on making a scrap quilt with sashing between blocks. Your quilts are so very beautiful.
Lovely video.
Can you please do a video on how to proceed once all the strips are sewn to the muslin foundation.
So many beginner questions… how are the squares sewn to each other? Do you then use a batting layer and a backing layer? How do you binds the quilts etcetc?
I am a complete newbie and don’t know anything about quilting but want to learn how to do this.
This is great and I love all your scraps!
This is one of the most beautiful quilts that I have ever seen, I will be attempting to make this soon. Thanks so much for your detailed easy-to-follow instructions. Very talented lady
Such a beautiful quilt. I think my next quilt will be like this. This looks like a very fun quilt to make. Thanks for sharing your video with all of us. ❤️New Subscribers, I will definitely be back. ❤️❤️❤️
And nice to go back to each block and see all the old fabrics you used and where you used it before. Brings a lot of memories back for me. Love the whole idea of a string quilt.
Thanks, I am inspired, I think I can make my daughter a two-sided table runner for Christmas. Christmas fabrics on one side and black and white on the other, or maybe red and white on the one side, for Christmas and Valentine’s Day, or……
Thank you so much for this great video. Your demonstration and instructions were very clear. I was in lockdown until last week and now I feel like I’ve been to a class! I love the colours of your Tilda quilt . I’m definitely going to make one of these quilts. Kind regards from me in Australia.
This looks fun and interesting. Thank you for sharing your ideas with us ☺️
😊
Thank you. So beautiful!
I do string quilts but I sew one half in one direction then the other half the opposite direction. It's sew fun to do them.
Beautiful quilts. Really nice way to use scraps too. But please turn up the volume. 10 *
I love doing string quilts. Strings are great for almost any application.
They're so much fun!
It looks like you don't use batting. Am I correct in this assumption?
Those are such pretty blocks/quilts! I really like the idea of placing them on muslin rather than paper. I bet it makes a very warm quilt. I’m going to have to try this with some of the Moda scrap bags I have.
Absolutely beautiful
Just beautiful! Im alone at this stage of my life so when it comes to Christmas, I purchase a lot of yardage. Then at New Years, I start a new quilt. Tfs.
Absolutely love Tilda fabric, and they make gorgeous string quilts ❤
You could use the leftover scraps in a crumb quilt. By the way, my volume is fine. I'm on my tablet. Your instructions are awesome. Thank you for sharing. God bless.😊❤❤
Love this! Thank you!
Wow…I want to make one of these right away! Thanks!
Yes, It was FUN! Thanks for the video! Love those wood floors, too!
Thank you for this video. I love making these blocks. With the muslin back it makes for a substantial quilt. Here in Florida I use flannel on the back, no batting. The finished quilts wash really well, hardly any shrinkage.
Lovely quilts. Thanks for the video 😊
Thank your samples are beautiful love strips method thank you for sharing your quilts are beautiful thank you
Theola 😄
You explained this sooo good! Thank You and Happy New Year!❤
How gorgeous!! Must have a go love your choice of fabrics.
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT,!
thanks for showing the seaming process!!!
Great tutorial. Thank you.
Quick question. Does the layer of muslin make the quilt heavier? Would it be easier and lighter to sew it on a tear away foundation?
The muslin does make the quilt a bit heavier. If you can find a really cheap utility muslin that would be good. Paper can be used but the muslin is on grain and will keep the sides of the blocks from stretching out of shape since they will be bias edges. Paper will be ripped away. Does this help?
@@prairiepointquilts
Yes. That makes so much sense. I didn't consider the bias edges. That's why your the teacher❗😁
And yes looking for a cheaper muslin is a smart idea. Thanks.
A very good class. Thank you
Once you get the top done, could you show how you do the backing on it …is it a piece that is all one piece ? Thanks.
Back as you normally do a quilt.
This is great but why did you cut the blocks down to 9 and a half I niches instead of just using the whole 10 inches?
Yes
That’s a good question . Why not use the 10 inches?
Gorgeous!
Hi I saw your video and it is a great idea for all the scraps I have accumulated. My questions is do I still use a batting after I use the muslin that I attached to the strips? I really appreciate it if you can give me some ideas or answer. Thank you for sharing your video
I have used batting in every string quilt I have made. It does make a bit heavier quilt, but I use Dream Cotton Request to keep it lighter. However, you could layer it without batting if you want. It would be more blanket-like rather than quilty.
extra work wen u sew news paper on 2 the material. But each 2 their own.love the mixture of colors ty
I love it and am working on something similar to use scraps - a crazy quilt. I use old sheets as a base. I want to use muslin as a base when I do the string quilt but there so many different muslins out there - what kind do you use? Like by weight or what?
I used a very sheer muslin and it does distort the square shape. I may have to cut down my finished squares to 8 inches
My mom used newspaper back in the 40’s
Thank you for showing me about doing a quilt without batting! I live in central Texas, where 3 digit temperatures begin in May. I love a thin bed cover in summer, and one I don’t mind letting my service dog get on. Thank you! ❤
Without batting? She’ll put batting in between the backing and the quilt, unless I missed something. I guess it wouldn’t matter since you have muslin, and strips and backing. I suppose it’s up to you though. Been quilting for many many years and I can’t recall ever making a quilt without batting in it. Just a nice soft tufting to the feel of it, imo.
Oh perhaps it’s for the heat or warmth of it. Sorry, I didn’t hear that part, but I was watching tv at the same time, I may have missed that. I live in Canada where the winters are cold and humid, so I would never not put batting inside, but I can see why now. :)
Leaving out the batting makes it more like a coverlet or a nice summer throw. Definitely a different look and feel than a quilt. The muslin inside give weight enough to make do.
I’ve used large sandwich wrap papers to sew strips onto
This is so beautiful! What a good technique. Did you use a jelly roll for your completed quilt? The one that looks like pastels.
love this...thank you...cute shoes too
I luv this method but I don't have enough different prints to really make it interesting. However, I do note that this method creates plenty of scraps that can be used in other projects. The scraps certainly pile up. 😂😂💕
But I do think that the long arm quilting produces a much better result than I could ever achieve on my domestic sewing machine. 🤔
Do you put batting in these quilts?
Yes but you could leave it out and it would be more like a blanket. Use a thin batting like Dream Cotton Request.
Lovely idea, thank you
Beautiful 🥰
Great video!!!!
Could you put back on the square and use to make a rag quilt?
Where is the batting
There isn't any needed
@@alihopkins2851well, perhaps not needed but so much nicer however, if it’s done for warmth or too much of it, then I can see that in the warmer states of the USA.
Layer the quilt with batting and backing as normal. Quilt as desired and bind. The batting could be left out for a light, soft throw.
Very cool!
really nice!!!! thanks for sharing, i fear mine look a little funky
They are supposed to look funky!
Can I do these blocs with Jelly Rolls?
You certainly could! We use scraps, so our "strings" are various widths. If you used Jelly Rolls straight how they come, you would have less variation, less of a scrappy look. But definitely would work!
Of course you can.
Please turn up the sound thank you
Thank you❤
That is beautiful,
Does this work okay when making a smaller block?
I love this I’m making one also
Good afternoon, what type of backing should be used?
Any fabric you would normally use for quilt backing. Nothing heavy like minky as the quilt is already a little heavier with the muslin in there. I hope you enjoy making the quilt!
@@prairiepointquilts This will be my first Quilt!
It will be great as a first quilt! You don’t have to have a lot of Percision when constructing the blocks. Just be sure they’re all squared up exactly the same size before you start sewing the blocks together. Follow the directions and you can’t go wrong. I’d love to see what you’re doing.
@@prairiepointquilts I haven’t started one yet, I have everything I need, lots and lots of scraps, I just can’t seem to get Started 🥺
@@jacquelineguy8098 Take it in baby steps. One time, just collect your fabrics. Sounds like that part is done. If they're wrinkled, then press them. Later, cut them into strips as instructed. Sort them by size perhaps, and lay them in a flat container. Another time, get your muslin prepared and cut into squares. Then later when you feel like sewing, you have all the prep done and you can get on with the fun part! Instead of looking at the big picture, take it one step at a time as your time allows.
I'm totally new to this but terribly interested. I'd like to know what's a string quilt?
Hi, Lynette! A string quilt is called so because it's made out of "strings" or small strips of scraps.
I love this but I have a question, is muslin the same as brown cotton? I do not live in the States that’s why I am asking.
Not sure. Muslin is an off white often lighter weight fabric with tiny brown flecks in it. In place of the muslin you could use any light weight and even cheaper quality fabric for the foundation. Good quilting cotton is too heavy; it adds more weight to the quilt than necessary.
@@prairiepointquilts Thank You🤗🤗🤗
Great Video. But, I agree that the VOLUME needs to be increased.
Thank You for sharing ! 😀
Barbara Ganoe is the volume on your computer loud enough as well as the volume on the video?
I always do this lattern
Wish the volume was better. Can’t hear the instructions. I just have to watch and read between the lines.
your sound is not loud enough.
Muito lindo!!👍👍❤
Спасибо!!!!!
Where can I buy that tilda fabric
That same Tilda fabric is no longer, but www.PrairiePoint.com carries a lot of Tilda prints.
This might be good if you could hear it!
Yup, had to go get my external speakers and crank those up on stereo....still having trouble!
❤️
My boys r grown and I was left with lots of school paper…so i use that as a base
Aa long as all inks used on the school papers do not run...with iron steam or when quult is washed.
@@nancy-katharynmcgraw2669I believe you have to take the paper off before you sew it together, you wouldn’t wash that quilt ever with paper left on the backing. Some use old telephone books, catalogue pages, but you have to tear them off once that particular block is done and cut to size. I prefer a fabric myself, doesn’t have to be expensive stuff though, any old fabric will do,doesn’t show.
Yes, you can, but when you remove the paper you have bias edges all around the block. Just be careful when sewing them together, or sew blocks together then remove the paper.
Gorgeous
Im new to this just very interested sorry but how was it
Attached together
After cutting up blocks up square, just sew them together as you would any quilt blocks.
Can't hear you yourou nerd a microphone 🎤 so we can hear what you are saying. . Ty.
Volume is so low I’m not able to follow what looks like it would be a great tutorial sorry no complaining just hope you can fix it
I wish the volume was a little louder. I love watching it but it was very difficult to hear.
We will work on it for our next videos!
Prairie Point Quilt and Fabric Shop , thank you very much. My hearing isn’t what it once was. 😉
@@louettesommers8594 there are also apps to "boost" volume in any video. You just choose how much to increase your volume by in the app and then open the UA-cam.
@@lisaforte1575 I honestly had no idea. I really appreciate your responding. Blessings to you on this beautiful Monday.
You can use the Closed Captioned until they fix it.
One of the best videos on string quilting. Extra tread and bobbin ideas great. So do you use batting or is it thick enough with muslin, strings of fabric and backing?
Funny that your comment was EXACTLY what I was thinking! LOL! I'd think batting would be optional, but let's see what she says....
I have used batting in every string quilt I have made. It does make a bit heavier quilt, but I use Dream Cotton Request to keep it lighter. However, you could layer it without batting if you want. It would be more blanket-like rather than quilty.
Idk why people are saying they can’t hear, I can hear clear as day!
Loved the video ! Thanks !
This seems like a very easy and fast way to make a colorful quilt . Your presentation of the process was easy to follow as well. Thanks for sharing.
These would be great for charity quilts. I am part of a quilt ministry at my church
Yes, they’re so fast and easy to make and put together. Awesome block.
Great idea for charity quilts. Low cost and so beautiful
Thank you. Great tutorial. Given me lots of ideas. Please try to turn sound up a bit more. My old slightly deaf ears dont work as well as they used to. 💕 Subscribed.
My ears are 70 years old.... turn it up. Please
I'm going to say that too I wish your volume much little larger cuz you give great instructions but I just can't hear you even with my hearing aid up I still can't hear you all right God bless you I might have to put you out again but I enjoy subscribing to yourself your friend Ella:-).
What about the batting and backing?
I use a thin batting, Quilter's Dream Cotton Request. Back with anything you like.
I do this!! Mine are kinda by "themes". Picnic, reds, yellows, sunflowers, browns, animals etc. I love doing it. 🧵🪡♥️
Your quilts are beautiful and great presentation, thank you so so much!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching.
Hi. Hello. Howdy. Great video but I could barely hear you. Next time, please speak up...Thank you.
I never wash my material..top or bottom ..I like the look after quilts has been finished and quilted... then I wash it ...the quilt ...all shrinks together including the quilting stitches
Girl, you are fantastic! I'm glad you popped up! Where have you been all my life? Thank you
I could hear this just fine. Very well done video, I appreciate that you premade samples of all the steps. I will subscribe to see more!
This was a great video! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this . Your demonstration was clear and so helpful and made me want to try this now ! ❤️👏🏻🌟looking forward to your other videos❤️
How to connect finished squares together?
wow! let me tell u, u r amazing!! tks a lot for sharing your knowledge with us
When you have leftovers of the leftovers, use double-sided fusible web. Iron them on randomly, then iron onto a fabric square. Then you can use them to practice hand or machine quilting. After that you can add a binding and turn it into a hot pad or mug rug.
Julia Kovacs Great idea!
That’s a great tip, thanks
Amazing. Such beautiful talent. If you keep showing me how, I might could make one square!!
I like that pattern
I loved watching, but could hardly hear. Wish it was a little bit louder. I had mine turned all the way up and still struggled. Thanks.
Try going to the transcript while she’s talking, it helps me a whole bunch. You can see the video and transcript at the same time, very helpful when they’re not too loud.
I looked all afternoon for your tutorial. Thank you so much! I agree, it was difficult to hear you. but very easy to understand your instructions. Thank you so much!
Thanks so much. I really enjoyed watching your tutorial. I look forward to trying this pretty, scrap busting design in the future. Loved, loved, loved all of the quilts you shared with us.❤
PLEASE turn YOUR volumn UP.
MINE IS on the HIGHEST level.
Thank You. It would HELP us out.
Thank you. I’m not sure why it sounds normal for some and barely audible for others. I’m sorry
@@prairiepointquilts I can barely hear it as well.
Volume is fine on my device.
Volume is fine for me as well
Very lovely what a wonderful idea great for a beginner. Thank you so much
The Tilda fabric is awesome. I just backed mine with a white sheet. I love soft cotton fabric...
