Listened to this for years without realizing there is a video to go with the audio. It’s such a gem of a song and a driven performance :D glad to see the band is there
Oh my god. Arcade Fire covering Magnetic Fields? This could not be more perfect. Plus its one of my favorite MF songs. Boy, he's developing quite the growl isn't he?
Stephin Merritt of the Magnetic Fields has inspired many of this generations most successful songwriters. He was relatively unknown for most of his career. Check out The Magnetic Fields, The 6ths, The Gothic Archies, and The Future Bible Heroes - all his bands.
"This is a Magnetic Fields Song, and this song is maybe the reason we're on Merge cause I was working,I was working in a shoe store in Boston and this song came on, "I was like what in hell is this song," it's amazing and I kept calling and requesting it; it's called Born on a Train" Merge is a record label that the Magnetic Fields and Arcade Fire are both signed to.
It's truly Brilliant. Magnetic fields are yet to tour Australia. 2019 still not many big artist. It's to expansive . Cost millions to fly own gear in. Unless you have 6 Boeing 747- 8i freighters.
I think we all have that " what the hell is this? " Moment with Magnetic Fields. Its like a revisitation of Phil Spector in an indie prism. Mine came when I heard the song " Saddest Story ever Told" on a late night program called " Adventure Club " in Dallas on 9.45 the edge . I was blown off the map.
Im pretty sure that this is a mashup of Born on a train and the intro to Saddest story ever told, both by The Magnetic Fields ❤ A beautiful and deep rendition
They did. The original starts on B and this starts on D. Much easier to play. May have still been too low for him, but the gruff monotone kind of works for the song.
On one hand, I'd say he doesn't have a "good singing voice", but this is the first time I've heard it, and it is unique/recognizable, and it imparts a certain emotion that adds to the song, sounds like hardship, sadness, rough life... almost brings a tear to my eye.
1splat23 he butchered this song though. There’s lots of songs I love but I would never cover them because I know my voice would ruin them. I’ve been through hell and back too but I know my limits.
The year is 2024: This still rocks

This song led me to Magnetic Fields music back in 2009. I'll be forever grateful for it.

When my dad died I rode my bike around town and blasted this song on a bluetooth speaker all night every night for weeks if not months
Still a song I sing on a daily, I'm glad that this video is still up.

I like this but it is complete missing the beautiful and wonderful musical intricacy of the original Magnetic Fields song
I would give my right arm to see Magnetic Fields and Arcade Fire playing together
O yeah
For those who don’t know, he says at the start of these sessions that he’s extremely sick and can barely sing. So…there you go.
Thank you
Doesn't get much better.
sticking around always ends badly
de acuerdo
not painful,way way better
Steven Merritt sings in a baritone, they would have been smart to move the key up two steps.

I read that they were all super sick with a bad flu for this. However, I love the scratchy quality of his voice on this.
