I've done so many engine and gearbox builds on my drive tooo, just wished I recorded sooner, especially vivaro engine out, gearbox, clutch and even cambelt on a rare 2.5vivaro🙄🙄🙄
Couldn't agree more. I'm gonna roll the dice and follow your footsteps with my older brother's help. This is what convinced my to give it a go. Thank you brother. Clear, concise and well explained. Top man.
Hello, YOU my friend have a natural ability to educate, teach, and explain that a majority of people and even teachers do NOT possess. I've seen mechanics with ramps struggle with this job so hats off to you. I don't know what you do as a day time job and i'm not asking you to divulge but if you ever decide on a new career path you have something natural, well done and thank you, your videos are of the highest quality. 10 out of 10. Regards.
I believe that block on the subframe you pointed out is a counter weight for vibration damping. I think it's something to do with one side's driveshaft being longer/heavier than the other, so that weight counters that
what has me going is the fact that when you start a job like this, it's you just gotta undo this bolt to get to this bolt to undo this bolt.......never ending list of undoing bolts just to get to one important part that need replacing, no wonder these jobs cost so much and how u manage to remember what goes where when its time to put everything back together has me in awe of how u manage to do this and you make everything look so damn easy! fair play to you mate, you have come on leaps and strides with these videos which are edited so beautifully, u really are my fav youtube garage channel. this content is great. keep it up man :)
I tackled the Insignia DMF, clutch and slave cylinder a couple of weeks ago. The box was just as heavy, maybe more - but it was not a job that I would again lightly. I had the exact same problem (I also have a MK4 Mondeo as well - the same as you, but luckily no clutch issues on that). I only lowered the left side of the sub-frame down partially and rested the box on it, enough room to get the job done. Otherwise, I'd have to get it on my chest and onto the floor, which even for me isn't an easy job. Yep - I also did it on the driveway. Hats off to you for taking on such a brutal job in this... British weather! Also, I had to fight with the dreaded "flywheel spin" where the bolts were inaccessible without an angle-grinder. Yeah, it was a fun job, Remember not to dry-bleed the slave cylinder as it can lead to premature failure. Prime it instead.
Loved every minute mate, looking forward to the next instalment...glad you resisted every other you tubers’ trait of having annoying background music constantly playing 👍👍
Can I just say, I have a Ford C Max and have only just started out repairing my own car due to costly errors by experienced mechanics. Using tutorials in a "STEP BY STEP" like manner, is what allowed me to rebuild the entire front suspension which was challenging but so rewarding in many ways. It's hard to find videos like yours on clutch work, so if you please,... the more intricate, "STEP BY STEP... Bolt by Bolt with good lighting and good angles" the better. Hell, your videos are better than the notorious Haynes Manuals. Keep up the good work. Well Done!
I love when older cars saved. My dad also has 05' mk3 Mondeo. It doesn't even has any rust. Told him to keep it nice and tidy until wheels fall off, because it isn't worth anything. Nice work you have done :)
Great video, there’s a guy called Alan Howatt and he services hundreds of Mondeos Mk3-5 Taxis etc. His videos are worth a look if you’re interested in advice!
Well done, James! That is the most complicated gearbox removal I have ever seen. That’s because all the gearboxes I have removed were in front engine, rear drive vehicles. I haven’t heard kaput used for 60 - 70 years, when used by my grandfather. Not at all boring.
Good video, very clear and well presented, and no annoying music, great job, you certainly know your stuff, your enthusiasm is infectious. Very enjoyable.
I am a Bangladeshi, I like your work very much .... I am learning the work of car engine in Bangladesh, I really want to make a living by working with good and skilled teachers like you.
I like the direction your channel is taking James. Lots of detailed repairs on things that a commercial garage would charge £££ for that are interesting to watch. Your editing and camera work have also improved. I like the detailed angles you show as you disassemble/examine things. Your channel deserves more subs.
I seen your early videos in Corsa c repairs . You gone from a teenager to a man. From a diy part time ,to a proper mechanic with a very strong will.🙂 🤔James in part two, you NEED a aligment tool for the subframe or otherwise the car will never drive straight again. Love your videos. I am already in my sixth Fords Mondeo mk4. Got a mk4 1.6 tdci now. Absolutely love them.
You did a good job but over kill with the subfame it only needs dropping down on one side leave anti roll bar alone and steering rack just remove the drop links from the struts and track rod ends from the hub unbolt box and let the box sit on the frame while you replace the clutch.
You’re never boring . You’ve taught me a lot. Always look forward to your new uploads Why can’t car manufacturers actually design/build engines that don’t have design flaws. They must know about these things during testing. The amount of money these companies make you’d think they would ! IDK!
Yeah the gearbox is so heavy on these. Last time I done a clutch on one of these we loosened all the subframe bolts, took the passenger side ones off all the way and there’s just enough room
Fascinated with your confidence on taking on this sort of job on your driveway. Great informative video. Good to see you were able to establish the exactly the extent of repair required. Well done!
When you fit your new pressure plate there is a procedure to be aware of it is the self adjusting type. The three little springs will be fully compressed on the new pressure plate and need to still be fully compressed once the new plate is tightened down. If you trigger those springs when you fit the pressure plate the clutch won't work properly. There is a £400 fancy tool to do the job, you can make your own for about a tenner. If your Haynes manual for a Mondeo is as useless as my Volvo Haynes manual this won't be explained very well. The other way is to fit the pressure plate and tighten the bolts very gradually and evenly keeping a close eye on the three springs to make sure they haven't moved. Alan Howatt has a good channel, well worth watching. To save a lot of sweating when you refit the gearbox you can cut some bits of M10 studding about 100mm long and screw them into the engine, then slide the gearbox on over them, makes life a lot easier. I'm sure you already know, but that steering rack pinch bolt inside the car is a one use item. Keep on keepin' on!
just in case you don't know when your reinstall the sub frame you have to align it there are holes on the back you see them in the video at 20:02 there is a proper ford tool but you don't have to use it all i use at work is 2 3/8 deep drive 14mm snap on sockets and 6inch extensions to align it if you dont align it properly you'll never get the tracking right afterwards. love the vids keep em coming
Fair play mate, you have bigger balls than me,I could take all the parts off easily its just putting it all back together, I would be flapping about, loosing bolts, spanners, cursing. So well done buddy
Well done tackling that on your drive. I know what its like trying to do repairs between windows of rain! Your videos make me want to attempt more in-depth repairs like this or timing chain etc, but they're supposed to be an absolute nightmare on my car (x-trail). The good thing about you recording is you can easily find out where everything goes when you're putting it back together 😆 Looking forward to part 2.
James, you've got it all apart so you're halfway there. It makes sense to replace the crankshaft rear seal now you have the flywheel off. Gearboxes are no lightweight but that one must be really heavy. The last clutch change I did was on my 2002 Citroen Xsara Picasso. I wish I'd made a video when I did it.
Love the level of detail that you put into your videos. 36m that go by really fast, also great to share what are you following to get the job done and how you go about it. Keep it up!!
Another great vid. Before you put the slave cyl on, check if you need the sealant on it. The mk3 had to have a specific one. They were also a pig to bleed afterwards, best way is to refill through the bleed valve using a syringe as it pushes the air upwards.
Hello James, Thanks for showing and doing a how-to video on this ford I really enjoyed watching it, and I'm really looking forward to part 2. I have a focus and I do all my own repairs also
Fair play for doing that on your drive mister, front wheel drive gearbox removal is often way more involved. Kevin Albert Williams has a great channel also, focusing on mobile clutch replacement - perfect watch for the most efficient way to get the box out or just enough out of the way to change slave or clutch/flywheel depending on the car.
Ford gearboxes are super heavy! I know you always say you're not a professional and just a DIY guy but honestly... I've apprenticed lads for 3 years who couldn't hold a candle to what you can do on your own! Great work dude
Hi James,, I'm following you a long time and safety is a big factor with you which is great,, keep the good work going as everybody enjoys your work ,,
Thanks James another top video ‘ how to ‘ wish you were about in the 70s when I was working on my car to show what the hell to do lol. john. Hartlepool
Great content James well done mate.Did a similar job on my 07reg Volvo V50 2.0D a few years back , took me about 3 days 😂 . Got to say your channel is one of the most informative out there for the driveway mechanic.
Another great video, really appreciate the effort and work and can't wait to see this one come together. Keep up the hard work and I look forward to the next one.
Top geezer and youtuber!! Glad you back in the swing of things!! Looking forward to the next video! Keep up the good work and more success will follow💪
Doing a great job here James, you can be proud of yourself! That motorbike lift looks very handy, ordered one as i am also having to do the same job on my car later on.
I've got an identical car and been told it needs new clutch/dual mass flywheel...was quoted £550 for parts and labour and thought no chance..after watching this video I'm booking it in to be done next week...seems a complex job which you've made look easy...great vid mate...👍
Great video once again, straight forward and informative, sounds like a ridiculous tip, but invest in some foam interlocking tiles to place around the car while you're working, so much more comfy to lay on while you work... One of my pet hates is the aches and pains from crawling round under a car, dunno how you always do this in shorts with the patch of gravel next to you 😂👌
You’ve got guts to do this job on your own on your driveway 👍👍👍👍 I can do most jobs but wouldn’t tackle that 😀 Cracking little impact btw-can’t believe it wizzed those driveshaft bolts out so easy 👍
Great video as always James. I never just replaced a Dual Mass Flywheel with another, I always convert to solid mass. Stupid contraptions, just a ticking time bomb.
This is proper DIY mechanic stuff, not ponsing about with air rides and wraps with noisy boy racer exhausts like some other YTer's.
Your comment is very Miserable
@@georgepeg6167 very miserable indeed
This made me smirk. Although I hate air ride cars etc. Each to their own.
Heart like a lion to tackle that on your driveway James ! Imagine what you’d achieve in your own unit with a proper lift ! Fair play to you 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Looks like you’ve been eating the same pies as I have during lock down 😂 glad your vids still going good have always helped me!
Well done James, a man after my own heart. Proper driveway spannering. Memories of when I did the Mk3 Mondeo clutch on the drive.
every time I've had to drop a mk3 subframe the captive nuts have spun, grinder to the chassis to get to the nuts every time!
@@ninjabearhug Yes its a common thing. Stupid design.

Do yourself a massive favour..go Halfords and get some of the floor mats..insulation and comfy to lie on...
Bought them recently, mad how much of a difference it makes

Get them zig saw mats aye
Rolson floor mats - 13 quid from Amazon
