  • Update 8/20/23: The camera is functioning fine. When I started up the car yesterday a chime started ringing. I thought the stock back up camera detected something in was as I was backing out. No, it was the dash camera reminding me to reformat the memory chip.
This is a dual camera dashcam installing on a 2018 Toyota RAV4.
I know this is a very long video. I wanted to show all the possible lighting conditions so that you can see the resolution quality of video clips and it's ability to show details on the other cars. I also wanted to show detailed views of the way I installed the camera for the Toyota RAV4 owners.
I purchased the OBD Hardware Kit on Amazon at: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B...

I saw on Amazon and some videos what the hard wiring looked like with the open ends. On Amazon, this shows some of these OBD cables and refers to it as hard wiring. That is what that comment was about. I get the resolution can be a bit better but not if it's dirty for all the outside crap. Unless you always make sure the lens is clean. One other issue is the moisture on the rear car window in the winter can be a bit of a problem, but using those static plastic pieces it could be moved for the winter and placed where the rear defog keeps the window clear. I think these things are mostly used for the proof of a collision and not so much for the really fine detail. That being said, of course, there will be times when a clearer picture can be important and all of this is depending if it's ever needed at all. We had a front cam years ago and we got rear-ended and pushed into the truck in front of us. The officer looked at the vid and confirmed what we said happened did happen. That was it. In the case of seeing someone's face and getting clearer details, then it can make a difference unless they damage or pull off the camera before you see much. Unlikely of course. Anyways, just a thought as we all do think differently about such things.

In my experience hard wiring is when you have to either solder or screw a connection to a fitting. The OBD port is a plug that fits on with friction. On the RAV4 the OBD port has a small locking tab. No need to get into the weeds about the definition. Just choose what your prefer. I like the easy connection of the OBD port. I'm concerned that if I ever have to drop the car off at my mechanic he might break the locking tab on the OBD port, so I have to remember to disconnect it first. The Redtiger camera for the rear is designed for outdoor use so it's a matter of keeping one lense clear. It luck that you had your camera working during that accident. My first dashcam was in use for a year before I discovered that the storage chip was corrupted and was not recording.

Hello David, Thank you so much for this video. Could you please share the brand and part number or a link where you purchased the ODB cable for your dashcam?

It sounded like you were putting the back cam on the outside of the car. Is there a reason for this and not on the inside? They also refer to the OBD plugin as hard wiring. So really it sounds like it doesn't make a difference. My plan is to order an after-market with an on-off switch on the OBD in case I have it parked where it's not necessary to have it left on. My concern would be the battery as well until I know for sure how that works. What was the size of chip you used and would you recommend the 128-gig chip. Or do you think it's not necessary? The little box on that cable monitors the battery and turns off the unit if the battery drops to a certain level. Good job on the video. You bring up a lot of things that can be a bit of a problem. Now you know your car a little more inside and out. lol From the look of all your pictures that end up on the phone, you can send them to your computer or do as you did and put the chip in the computer and put all those pictures on your computer. Might end up with some good ones. It looks like the pictures are pretty good quality. I see you're in the Seattle area. I was having fun as you drove around trying to see if I could figure out just where you were, but I'm not from the US. I'm in BC. but have been there many times. Great night view even with no headlights. Impressive. The only thing I would suggest is a lens that fits on the front camera that is supposed to reduce the glare from lights. It just slides on from the look of it. Saw it put on the Redtiger camera on UA-cam.

The manufacturer recommended an outside mount for better resolution. I preferred an interior mount as I thought it would be easier. As I mocked up a mounting position inside the rear hatch window I noticed that there wasn't any good angles for the mounting of the camera. Hard wiring is when you tap the wiring into the connections in the fuse box. I don't drive the car every day and when I do it's for short trips. So far I have not had any low battery problems. The camera does seem to record in high resolution but I don't thinks it's a true 4K. Thanks for the tip about that box on the cable and thanks for watching.

I agree, I think a lens filter would be a good idea. I'm using a 128 G memory chip. I don't think you need to go with that much storage as the recording will loop and overwrite the oldest files when the card gets full. Yes neighbor, I am in the Seattle area.

One thing someone in another video said what if the chip is too small and you are recording at all hours that if it starts recorder a fair bit then what you might have wanted to see could get written over. This made me wonder, what size is best.@@davidgpo

@@deanstewart8727 If you're concerned get the largest capacity you can get. Make sure it is compatible with your model of dash cam because they are sometimes fussy. I rarely park my car away from my house overnight. When I do my yearly road trip it will be parked at a hotel lot for the evenings.

Oh lord seems like i would have to take the whole car apart 😮 i might just pay for a company to install mine. I had someone peaking in car windows at night at work and they person put smiling faces on my back window so that told me that person was peeping out my vehicle at work. So i definitely need mine to record when there is motion around my vehicle. When the camera is recording while parked will i get a notification on my phone?

Taking the trim off the read hatch wasn't so bad. You could mount the camera on the inside of the car. I think the factory recommended against it because filming through glass could cause distortion. As you can see by the video I had trouble viewing the clips from my phone. I'm just going to retrieve the memory card and play it back on my laptop if I have to.

@@davidgpo I understand that they recommend to be installed on the outside but I wouldn't be able to see who is playing around my vehicle. My job has been having a random person checking to see whose vehicle is unlocked and looking in windows and that person used my back window as a drawing board. So if I install it on the outside around my backup camera I wouldn't be able to catch the footage of the person in action.
