What I liked about this video was that you took the time to use your senses. It drives home the idea that just making some basic observations can put you in the correct "diagnostic funnel". "Feel" the misfire, "hear" the even cranking, "smell" the excessive fuel. Those three things scream ignition problem... Sure, there are other things to consider but, it is a valid diagnostic direction to start with.
The best diagnosis I've seen so far, step by step breakdown of where to start and where to go. Being that I have the same car, same problem. Nice video work too. AWESOME TECHNICIAN 👌
That was the BEST detailed video I have ever seen. I have the exact same problem on my 2011 Cruz Eco. Now I know every issue that it could be. Thanks for making the video.
This video was super informative and I wish many videos were like this in thought process and in detail. Most videos show the one problem it had and exclude everything else that could also have been the problem for us viewers.
Glad I could be of help. Diagnosing problems like this in a DIY environment comes with a lot of challenges. As a professional technician I have a lot of diagnostic tools available to me that a DIY'er would not, so I try to keep my troubleshooting as simple as I possibly can to arm you guys with techniques you can use at home. There are many issues where I have to break the big guns out to diagnose, but generally speaking I try to keep it as low tech as I can for you guys.
hello I need some help with my 2015 Chevy Cruze Lt 1.4 tubro engine I have replaced spark plugs and coil pack and new negative cable plus a traction control switch no luck. code PO300 and PO 36 on my scan tool on the dashboard it says service stabilizer and traction control
I have used a hair dryer down the spark plug hole, it will evaporate gas in about two seconds, if coolant it won't, this trick works great for a flooded engine in the winter.
I feel like thomas edison watching these. "I now know a thousand ways NOT to fix a misfire". But very informative along the way. As a 55+ yr old guy who always worked on my own cars, seems like with all the high tech diagnostics, sometimes a miss is just a bad plug. After 70k miles I would look there first.
I have a 2011 Chevy Cruze with 113k miles and had misfires and I just replaced the whole coil pack myself and it’s been running perfectly fine ever since then. Other than that problem my car runs perfect.
no offense guys but... I'm fascinated with all the tech info, and diagnostic equipment... that's why I watched the entire video, but if my car was misfiring, the plugs would have been the First thing I checked! not the last thing. when I think about the cost related to auto technicians and hourly charges, not to mention the waste of time in the shop. Man you took 2 days to find a bad plug? hope u did not charge the customer by the hour! I'm not a mechanic. I guess if I just swapped out the plugs and it fixed the problem temporarily I would never have known if it was a fuel injector issue or a coil issue or something else causing the plug to misfire. Still I got to compliment to you for paying attention to detail!
I like your analysis and tests done. The fluid in Cyl 1 is sure a mystery. A friend of mine’s same car with exactly the same issue. I suggested change all the plugs. It’s a good thing your issue is similar and nothing major. Her car does have an oil leak issue which could be more. Thanks for the video.
An older, experience mechanic such as myself would have taken the easiest, and most likely suspects out of the loop first. Those spark plugs would have been the second thing I removed and taken a look at. ruling out the easy, and least expensive items first often saves hundreds of dollars in labor time. This is why I became my own mechanic 40 years ago and build all of my own computers. I have empathy for people who do not possess the skill set needed to be their own mechanic and troubleshooter.
Absolutely with you on that one. Scan tools are a valuable diagnostic aid, but rule out the basics before you begin micro analysing. As you said, so many customers pay way too much because so many rely upon the code reader rather than common sense.
Second that, no one seems to just do basics, they jump to the youtube video they just saw and start there. And agreed with Atouk even the greenest of techs would have at least looked at and swapped plugs while the coil was off . Lots of time wasted trying to use the techniques learned on youtube David B
As an old guy who has worked on cars my whole life, and not having a lot of diagnostic equipment, my first guess would be spark plugs and I would have started by pulling them first. Wet in the cylinder? Not burning the fuel it is getting. Nice look at the diagnostics but I'd have fixed that miss quite a bit earlier.
True. My intention with this video was to simply showcase methods to reliably troubleshoot a fault, not really focused on the speed of the diagnosis per say.
If you're having a Misfire, it could be your coil Pack, $199 part on Auto zone, But only $50-75 on amazon. It's a common problem in Chevy Cruze Models. It took me a while to find out what was wrong with my car. If it's running rough, Powering down, not wanting to accelerate with out jerking... if it's not the Plugs, change the Coil Pack.
I definitely prefer this thoughtful scientific approach, over the blind plan to blast off the parts cannon with plugs, then coils and boots with minimal testing. Yup, some guys go fast in an effort to minimize labor cost to the customer, or because they are uncomfortable with the technology, or because they want to get the car out the door without really caring what was wrong. But in the end, I'd be disappointed if some kind of real diagnostics were not done. And if the parts cannon approach didn't work, those same guys who sarcastically claimed their approach is better would be looking to somebody like you who could chase it down a little further. This case is more complex than a plug, you also had the low boost and the mystery of coolant loss. Better to get as much info as possible.
I like the cruze due to a buddy of mine has one. Not really a fan of any turbos. Yet, use good synthetic oil, and change your oil and filter often. Working on cars pretty much look a the simplest or easiest thing first. Pretty good video, Tri Auto. 😊
For those who said that he should first check spark plugs, what if it wasn't spark plugs or ignition coils, or if is it hard to get near coils. Then what? He give us several methods and procedures for diagnosis
my car was running good all day long until going home at night going up hill then all hell broke lose. Service traction control and stability control on dashboard flashing check engine light 😮
Good video. One thing I wanted to note is that fuel trims are gonna be off when you have a misfire.. also loop status can be affected by a misfire. The computer will keep the vehicle in open loop and go to some default numbers for the fuel trims to help save the catalytic converter.
Great video and diagnosis. Cruzes are well known for leaking water pumps. Not sure if you diagnosed the p0299 or not but check the wastegate lever for excessive play. I've also seen cracks around the wastegate seat.
Thanks for watching! Funny you mention it, but the turbo on this Cruze had the exact same issue. There is actually a TSB for it no less! New turbo and good to go!
TD Merrill I am unsure about your experience with cars so I will just give you my thought... Do you see a leak around the valve cover? If so, your valve cover gasket may be worn out... it is a simple and easy fix, pretty cheap as well!! Hope this helps!
Would have checked PLUGS right away after good start to each & good AMP to each. But good to see how to check everything. Thanks for doing complete check on video.
I would like to start off by saying thank you I had same problem and looked it up I got your video and it was exactly what you did. This was a very good video and I liked how you took the time to explain every detail please keep the videos going thank you.
Yep yep. I hate playing swaptronics, but in some instances like this it is the only way to go given the circumstances. Not a big issue on this vehicle given how easy everything is to get to, but definitely a big problem where significant tear down is required to access the component in question. Primary or secondary ignition are always my preffered first tests over swapping things around in most instances.
This video is awesome! Can you do videos like this for everything in life? So much common sense and intuition! Great job! I will let you know if this fixes mine when the parts show up!!!
thats why i like my thermal imaging camera , you will see the temp difference on the coil pack and no need to remove the coil pack , i have versus pro as well ...
Good job Sometimes that’s what old school does you go back to old school and sometimes you get the trouble fix faster sometimes but you did a good job. Thank you for your info I like your video. Have a good blessing day Felipe, Elpaso, Texas.
after running the engine and you had the coil out, without pulling the spark plugs out, you could shot a infer red thermometer down the spark plug well , the other reading will be allot higher on the ones that are firing right.
Awesome video. In depth and informative. Currently having the misfire issue. Husband order some spark plugs and hopefully that solves our misfire issue! Thanks!!
This is the reason I went to school so I can't get screwed by mechanics. Misfire equals, check spark plugs first. Just the time and diagnostic alone will cost the owner $100-$300, for a $3-$5 spark plug. Should have took 15mins tops, if that.
Why would you not swap a plug around the first time you had the Coil pack out, kill two birds with one stone? You knew it was Ign. related, so why not do it and save some time?
This is how they make their money. Robbing people over nonsense thinking rather than to check obvious most common failures first. Dealerships are the worst crooks ever. I’ll make less on a repair knowing I gained a costumer for life.
he probably already knew the answer, but the information he shared in the video is valuable because it may not always be a plug. I'm having this issue right now.if I can find this particular post again, I will update youI don't have the tool but I'm going to try the spark plugs, then go try to call back if the spark plugs don't fix it. Yes I'll be out of extra minutes, but I will have saved over a hundred bucks.
I have the exact same issues with my 2011 Chevy Cruze! Only I don't have an advanced Enough scan tool. I'm going to change the spark plugs and hope that fixes it. I have the same issue with the low coolant, my issue though With the low coolant. My radiator fan does not come on any more.
60,000 mile suggested replacement on plugs in the 1.4 engine. My wife's car just hit 67,000 and has developed a small misfire under acceleration. I'm gonna throw 4 plugs in it and cross my fingers.
This was very informative. And the best part my cruze 1.4 turbo is in this same situation. Im gonna have to do a check on it now following the things you said. Hopefully it fixes my cruze thanks.
Hey man great vid... My chevy suffer the exact the same problem, same error codes. P0300, U0100-71... My mechanic replaced, spark plugs, coil, catalytic converter....problem not solved. Maybe the other code U0100-71 is the main problem and causes the misfires?
I have a 2015 Cruze 2Lt with the turbo. I am getting a random misfire. The last time it happened is shook the car really badly. Any ideas off the top of your head?
this video provides information just in case it's not only a spark plug it appears. I think it's a good idea because the thought process may help with methods of troubleshooting other systems.
Definitely junk I know three people who own em n all three had engine replaced after 100.000 miles from turbo failure one only has sixty two thousand miles junkiest moter Chevrolet ever made
Step one for me on a cruise with p0299 code is to pull the oil cap with engine running likely will be so much vacuum on crankcase it will hold the oil cap in place if so must replace valve cover as pcv is built in. If not i smoke crankcase and intake system. There are a few tsbs on pcv issues
Tyler Flight, valve covers are high failure items on this vehicle for sure, and are prime suspects for lean fault codes and poor idle conditions. This vehicle had already had the TSB performed by your's truly a few months back, and if you look closely you can almost smell the freshness of it lol. Thanks for mentioning this, as it is certainly a high failure item for others to watch for on this vehicle.
Enjoy your videos thanks! These live diagnostics tell it like it is instead of staged UA-cam repairs. You show how gathering competing evidence can often be misleading such as the empty coolant bottle. The color of that plug from cyl 1was interesting. Was it just a faulty plug or was the plug fouled - a symptom of another problem? Excessive fuel or oil entering the cylinder perhaps.
I think the discoloration was simply due to the poor running conditions in this cylinder. I could not positively identify an issue with this plug on a visual inspection, but I suspect the porcelain electrode insulation was cracked internal to the plug somewhere, causing the spark to jump to the threads and not through the gap.
i have on my chevy cruze 1.4 PO 300 multiple misfires. PO 36 Po113 and service traction control and stability control light on. I have changed spark plugs and coil pack plus new negative cable no luck at all
Wish this guy would work at the dealership I just brought my car to. They're telling me that I need to replace the engine and it's doing exactly the same thing as this one, was giving them the exact codes that this one was pulling up as well.
Great fix! Do you know what plug wires will work with that style ignition system? I think $160 bucks for four spark plug wires is a little ridiculous. Was the misfire also the cause of the low boost code?
Hey there. KY Home Garage did an excellent video detailing how to build your own, you can find that here. ua-cam.com/video/wldJ_ssxUis/v-deo.html What I ended up doing was purchasing four of these... www.ebay.com/itm/Inline-Spark-Checker-Kit-/122479804975?hash=item1c845d822f:g:DFMAAOSwA29Y4~-t, ....and using them as adapters. You can see me using one in this video. ua-cam.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=8owrRLBre9w Thanks for stopping by!
I have a Chevy Cruze 2011 1.4 lt turbo. My car is experiencing a random misfire code p0300 & p0299. This is my first car and also the worst purchase I’ve ever made. Every time I fix something I have to turn around and fix something else. Before this problem occurred my car had been sitting for a year because I needed my engine replaced. So my engine finally got replaced about 4 weeks ago everything was going good. And then I went and put gas in my car with in the next 24 hrs my car starting making jerking movements and giving rough start ups. I video recorded the situation and my mechanic said it was a misfire due to me putting in bad gas.
hi, I have a 2013, 1.8l Cruze ls AT, my problem i have a water pouring noise i think it passes through the coil, then a humming sound on the cervo, can you give any advice, i feel this is a lemon car. but i learned to love the cruze, please help, thank you.
How many miles on the faulty plugs? A q-tip dropped into the #1 to collect a sample of fluid, gas or orange coolant? Old school would say, faulty booth, bad plug, change all. Heat is the problem in #1. Too hot, cooler plug. Electronics are neat, but visual says a lot ,faster. You learned how to do it faster, just look at it.
So I have this exact problem on my '14 cruze with 1.4T. Missfire on cylinder 1. New plugs, gapped correctly show color change halfway up the strap. Also installed a new coil pack. Compression checks out 200 psi across the board. Fuel injector resistance checks the same across the board at 12.2 ohms. The wires that make up the plug that connects the coil pack all seem to be in good condition. Female ends of the coil pack plug show no corrosion. I have run out of ideas at this point. Before any work was done, we had been getting a P0301 code. After new plugs, new coil pack, and new injector on cylinder 1, we are getting the code P0300. Any help is genuinely appreciated.
The negative battery cable is known to be bad on these cars. Try that first, it's like 10 bucks. Mine went from 0 ohms when cold to 5 when hot. That will give you all kinds of codes.
Yeah, I put a new battery in about 3 months ago and have all the blueish green stuff all over it. I'm having all kinds of problems with my Sonic, missing, smoking, about to push it off a cliff!
As an interprovincial tech , I would have disconnected each injector lead , plug out and compression test while plug out ? There’s no magic here people!
I have a 2014 Chevy Spark and try as I might i cannot find ANYTHING on it showing how to work on the engine. Like engine schematics, spark plug changes, where to find the fuel injector, etc. can anyone post some stuff about the chevy spark. I know it's a tiny compact engine and not a big favorite of hobbyists to work on. But I'm desperate.
When you buy a snap-on scan tool, you damn sure get all the use you can. Would have been easier to suspect the car needed a tune up, manual says what the maintenance schedule is. But then again buying a different car would have solved this quicker.
great video TD sparked my interest [no pun intended] in spark plug test wires pico sells a four pack they are low resistence with a male end and a long boot female end 150 cocos the Subaru wires will probably work just as well just some food for thought thanks again
I found these as well friend, thanks for mentioning. Since you brought it up I'll throw a link for them in the description so others know where they can acquire them!
I was going to suggest the same thing... I have that set, one thing to note is that they are pretty stiff which makes them a bit easier to jam down a long plug well... but, it can be a bit of a pain sometimes too.
Coolant leak is probably that cheap plastic thermostat housing. I've gone through 2 of them in 85k miles. All of the plastic connectors coming from the themostat housing to the throttle body were toast when replacing the housing the second time. Plastic and heat are a recipe for failure. I would bet money on the thermostat housing.
boy was this customer blessed to have a mechanic such as yourself, taking a look at their vehicle.
What I liked about this video was that you took the time to use your senses. It drives home the idea that just making some basic observations can put you in the correct "diagnostic funnel". "Feel" the misfire, "hear" the even cranking, "smell" the excessive fuel. Those three things scream ignition problem... I have used a hair dryer down the spark plug hole, it will evaporate gas in about two seconds, if coolant it won't, this trick works great for a flooded engine in the winter.

I am a mechanic- I would of checked the basics way before I put the scanner on it.
Good video tho
lol
Right
Seriously. Like step #2. Lol
Lol I was thinking the same thing. Two days to diagnose a bad plug. Good job figuring it out though
Pico Boo You're right about that! Water pumps, turbos, and surge tanks are common on the Cruze. 👊🏼
My entire left side of the engine is covered in oil on my 13 Cruze I cant tell wth it is AAAHHHH
TD Merrill I am unsure about your experience with cars so I will just give you my thought... Do you see a leak around the valve cover? If so, your valve cover gasket may be worn out... it is a simple and easy fix, pretty cheap as well!! Hope this helps!
Cracks around the waste gate port is common on the Cruze. Not an issue unless the cracks become excessive.
Best video I've ever watched and most detailed by chance what fixed the under boost problem
Would have checked PLUGS right away after good start to each & good AMP to each. But good to see how to check everything. Thanks for doing complete check on video.
Your video was very helpful. I got my moms car fixed with this video. You went through all the stuff!!!
I would like to start off by saying thank you I had same problem and looked it up I got your video and it was exactly what you did. This was a very good video and I liked how you took the time to explain every detail please keep the videos going thank you.
Nice diagnosis...I see you already found the Pico COP secondary extensions. They'll speed up the diagnosis but swapping plugs & boots works also.

Great job but that’s usually my first step when it’s super easy to do, but other way great job curious if your still using the. Versus
When diagnosing a rough running condition, swapping the plugs is the first thing I would do since can't swap the coils.
Very good diagnosis. Can't believe all the "expert" haters.
thats why i like my thermal imaging camera , you will see the temp difference on the coil pack and no need to remove the coil pack , i have versus pro as well ...
my cylinder 1 was cracked in the tube and the top of the coil on cylinder 1. Swapped it and did plugs. Runs like a champ now.
Good job

Why would you not swap a plug around the first time you had the Coil pack out, kill two birds with one stone? You knew it was Ign. related, so why not do it and save some time?
It was because this engine was hot and I didn't want to pull a plug out of a hot cylinder head unless it was absolutely necessary.
This is how they make their money. Robbing people over nonsense thinking rather than to check obvious most common failures first. Dealerships are the worst crooks ever. I’ll make less on a repair knowing I gained a costumer for life.

I have a 2014 cruze , with same issues !! Thanks for this video it help 100% thanks man!!
Thank you so much, Learnt on how to approach a problem for solution
Hey man great vid...
My chevy suffer the exact the same problem, same error codes.
P0300, U0100-71...
My mechanic replaced, spark plugs, coil, catalytic converter....problem not solved.
Maybe the other code U0100-71 is the main problem and causes the misfires?
Do you ever figure out the p0299 code. Did the turbo need to be replaced?
I have a 2015 Cruze 2Lt with the turbo. I am getting a random misfire. The last time it happened is shook the car really badly. Any ideas off the top of your head?
Why did you not get to checking the Spark Plug on the number one spark plug, right away ?????
this video provides information just in case it's not only a spark plug it appears. I think it's a good idea because the thought process may help with methods of troubleshooting other systems.
I’m having a p0300 come on Terrain it throws code only while raining or after sitting in rain weather any idea what to look or test
How to solve the problem? Don't purchase a Cruze. I've babied my Chevy Cruzy and it's still been in the shop; I will be selling it this summer.
Roll up your sleeves and go to work if you can
Definitely junk I know three people who own em n all three had engine replaced after 100.000 miles from turbo failure one only has sixty two thousand miles junkiest moter Chevrolet ever made
Step one for me on a cruise with p0299 code is to pull the oil cap with engine running likely will be so much vacuum on crankcase it will hold the oil cap in place if so must replace valve cover as pcv is built in.
No problem! I figured you would have checked that anyways. Enjoying your videos
Same issue. Replaced coil pack and plugs. Still random misfiring.
What kind of scanner are you using? It's very detailed and I would like to purchase one.
Working on a flip cruze I found my coil issue finally the inside at the coil was all corroded
Did you figure out the issue with the low coolant in the Chevy Cruze?
Honestly that was a much bigger concern to me than a misfire.
These all in one coil pack design is a real PITA. Vauxhall in the UK has been using them for nearly 20 years. Super hi failure item around 60k.
U are just doing a job that makes me so easy doing for my car really thanks.. love from australia ❤️
Appreciate the step by step diagnosis.
i have on my chevy cruze 1.4 PO 300 multiple misfires.
He probably swapped cars.
do you know the part #'s for the plugs and boots? Thanks
Good videos man. You have a new subscriber! Keep these videos coming!
My chevy also misfire. What will be the issue.
Please guide me.
Plugs or coil?
I have did the diagnosis he said some sensor issue.
Please advise me
Those misfire counters r really cool!! Enjoyed the video and am subscribing!
Awesome! I'm glad you enjoyed, misfire counters really are the best right?
My customer also had P0300 but I found that fuel pressure when cranking is 60psi, but pressure while running is 45psi.
Just 1 plug took you two days..
It be like that sometimes
Great fix! Do you know what plug wires will work with that style ignition system? I think $160 bucks for four spark plug wires is a little ridiculous. Was the misfire also the cause of the low boost code?
Hey there. KY Home Garage did an excellent video detailing how to build your own, you can find that here. ua-cam.com/video/wldJ_ssxUis/v-deo.html
What I ended up doing was purchasing four of these...
www.ebay.com/itm/Inline-Spark-Checker-Kit-/122479804975?hash=item1c845d822f:g:DFMAAOSwA29Y4~-t,
....and using them as adapters. You can see me using one in this video. ua-cam.com/users/edit?o=U&video_id=8owrRLBre9w
Thanks for stopping by!
As for the low boost code, the turbocharger waste gate rod was worn, causing that.
Good video, great explanation, I appreciated.
I would’ve swapped coils or checked plugs ages ago! but great info for reading these fancy scanners.
Cant swap coils on that model
Nice video, I following u from Iraq.. thanks for help.
Same thing is happening to my 2012 sonic. Everything was fine until I filled up my tank. How did the mechanic fix the issue?
I'm no expert but would it be using up more gas because of this?
hi, I have a 2013, 1.8l Cruze ls AT, my problem i have a water pouring noise i think it passes through the coil, then a humming sound on the cervo, can you give any advice, i feel this is a lemon car. but i learned to love the cruze, please help, thank you.
The car starts perfect does not have a check engine light on. Is it necessary to change the cool pack also or just the spark plugs?
Change spark plugs first, and see if it fixes it, cause coil pack is around $100
Great video, learn a lot. Thank you.
What's the diag tool and software? Is it expensive?
you still doing youtube? havent seen anything new from you in awhile. you have great troubleshooting skills
I think main issue here is head gasket problem. Coolant leaking into the cylinder and smells weird when it burns along with the fuel.
Did you check for any vacuum leak?
Check camshaft and crankshaft sensors
Same thing just happened to me. I changed all the plugs but still the same issue so I changed the all 4 spark plug cables and is fixed the issue.
Did you figure out the problem??
As an interprovincial tech , I would have disconnected each injector lead , plug out and compression test while plug out ? There’s no magic here people!
Nice job on the video, well done.
I have an old Autel MaxiDas. I'm not sure if it has that feature
Why is it not throwing a code for misfire in cylinder 1? Why just random misfire?
Good to know. I think dealing with these ignition systems is a pain all the way around 😂
Cheap in line spark testers might be a way to go instead of plug wires
