This was the most informative video on misfiring that I have ever seen!! As a mechanic myself and shop owner, I can honestly say that this gentleman is in the right business and is doing our field a FANTASTIC service.
He's also got the best tools. In this case tool quality matters. Those escopes are awesome. Not meaning to shortchange the user though, he's on the ball. :)
Best troubleshooting video ever! Thank you so much, I'm getting into this tomorrow. Update: Was getting P0304, P0300. Turned out that I replace spark plugs and the coil module. Cylinder 1 and 4 were severely corroded (coil, links, plug), just amazing that it ran for so long like this, the other 2 looked brand new. The coil module comes with the rubber boots and the spring links, all in one box. Paid 180 CAD from a local auto parts retailer, stock on a Saturday morning! Spark plugs were premium at 21 CAD a piece. Will check my connectors to the computer in the summer. Be very careful if you are newbie and replacing spark plugs, the holes are deep and you want that clean right to the bottom as if you were going to eat some sushi in there. I use an air compressor, break cleaner and thin rags that I pushed down with a flat screwdriver around the spark plugs until its perfect. Pulled them out easy, did about 1/4 turn torque on the new ones. I checked the gap, didn't need any adjustment right form the box, Be careful with the coil module connector, pull that little colored tab out and press down on the clip to pull out. Google it if you are not clear on that. Mileage 67,000 km (42,000 miles).
I've been troubleshooting my 2012 Chevy Cruze for a month now. Went through a couple coil packs new spark plugs and a pigtail for the coil pack. Stumbled upon this video and that was the problem. Thanks!!!
This brings back memories of the shop that I went to last year. and just as you said, they had replaced multiple ICM and the problem was still there. The only difference was that this vehicle would blow fuses, but it was still the same corroded connector. good job Bernie.
I have been watching a lot of different auto technician videos and I want to know why it took UA-cam literally year's to recommend this guy, I would give my left testicle and right kidney to be as knowledgeable as Bernie Thompson, this guy is very impressive with his diagnostics, hats off Bernie, don't know if you read the comments, but I am loving your videos.
Thanks so much my car was literally park for a year and half getting rusted had no idea why my coil pack kept going bad check everything and was never successful. Mechanics wanted to charge me over 1000 and all i had to do is clean my connector the same way you did.🙂
The speed at which you can see the issue is amazing to me. I think it’s awesome. I also have to pause and rewind to see what you see because it happens so fast but amazingly educational 👍👏👏
Oh man, I wish my doctor knew his craft as well as this gent. Sure, it's an infomercial, but it makes you feel sorry for someone trying to troubleshoot without a proper scope AND the careful, deductive reasoning to use it. Well done!
I don’t have one of those fancy tools but my 15 cruise has been sitting for several month. I took my car to a dealer and they got oil all over the top of my transmission where the filter is. Which I freaked about so they “cleaned” it by pressure washing it. Fast forward to months later, I started having a misfire. I changed the ignition coil. It fixed it for a few months then started misfiring again. I would bet you this is the result of them pressure washing the engine bay where it says “do not pressure wash” and when I say dealer i mean an actual chevy dealer, so they should have known better. I contacted chevy and they were no help. From that day on I work on my own cars. I’ll check the plugs once I finish the ford I’m working on. Thank u very much it’s another place to look besides changing the result of something else being broken!
I had a 2015 Chevy Cruze and I had a misfire on cylinder 3 and the dealership mis diagnosed and costed me $2500 to replace the engine. After moving to PA, I had the same issue and took it to Bean’s Auto in North Versailles and he replaced the coil pack which was the correct diagnosis. He went above and beyond and replaced the spark plugs and changed the oil. If anyone in the Pittsburgh area needs their car repaired. I recommend Bean’s Auto. John Bean was my grandmother’s mechanic for years. That is how I know him.
Great Video - in Cruze chat groups, members go through those coil / ignition modules like candy. I find GM placed the washer fluid reservoir fill neck way too close to the computer. That was one of the first things l noticed when I bought this car. Awesome video. I always was curious how to troubleshoot these coil packs because you can't use old school methods like coil swaps.
Thanks Bernie. That ttl works great.. Great scope. I'm getting used to this Escope elite 4. Need to get used to it more..I tried the crank misfire & works great..
Thank you for the video, I have the same problem I took to Midas, Canton MI, they replaced everything and paid thousands ruined my car, and did not figure out the problem. I am heading outside today to see myself the connector and follow what you are doing and update you guys
Yes sir ,you have skills into troubleshooting! That the most of the mechanics don't have it ! All my respect! 2.4 L .....is a troublemaker this engine.
THANKS FOR THE BREAK DOWN OF THIS .. CORRISON I HAVE SAME PROBLEM IN A 2012 CHEVY CRUZE TURBO AND YES BLOWN 3 TIMES NOW ITS MISFIRING BUT CODES 350 AND 351 .... BUT THANKS FOR FIGURING IT OUT ....
I've gone through 3 ignition coil too and it blows out the fuse for injectors 1 & 3. PO103, P2301 is the reading I get. Could this also be corrosion issue..because I went through the wiring harness and found no break in the wires.
Why the scope isn't the first tool on the job amazes me. Always the parts canon first, then the scope. SMH I had to chuckle about the WD-40 actually being the proper thing to use. ;) That's a pretty good looking scope and software.
Awesome! Those cursors seem to give you a hard time every time you want to use them. I'm sure that a wide "grab tab" could be programmed into the software, for easy " grabbing & moving"... no?
I got almost the same problem but this is 04 silverado I did replaced an ignition coil and the customer called me again and surprise I got the same problem 😥
He could see the white trace on the scope waveform shape was identical to a fuel injector control waveform. It was supposed to be a 0 to 5 VDC square wave. Instead it was at 12 VDC, then pulled down to 0 VDC. Then when released, you see the white trace spikes very high. Probably as high as 50 VDC spike. If you rewind the video and pause it you will kind of make it out, if you know what an injector waveform looks like. Hope this helps.
@@thebaldmechanichardatheari1124 indeed, most of us that have seen waveforms; we can spot issues like this really quick but Bernie doesn't explain because he assumes we are familiar with these common signals.
I drove a Silverado, and was surprised when I pulled off the top of the fuse box that was under the hood. No seals at all from rain or dirt! Unbelievable!
I’m having this exact problem with my Chevy Cruze I’ve replaced everything that I could myself i cleaned the corrosion like he did and for some reason it’s still giving me a misfire code in cylinder 1 I just don’t have the awesome tools he has to figure out if it’s the connector harness or what lol
Great video as always Bernie, however I have a couple questions. Yes you cleaned the corrosion from the connector, but wouldn't there be actual damage (pitting) to the terminals in the connector and the pcm? Second, how did the the corrosion happen? I didn't see any mention of inspecting the weather seal or determining how liquid got inside the connector.
Late reply but I've found on these water tracks through the harness from the thermostat housing connector. Seems to happen more on aftermarket housings.
Like he says, it's a step by step procedure. You must have good Service Information in order to understand what's going on in the electrical. I'd like to know how that corrosion got there? Coolant leak? Rain or snow or splashed water intrusion?
welp, took my 1.8l connectors off and found a little bit of corrosion in the same harness in which you did.. it was very little but i went ahead an I cleaned it up with some electronic contact cleaner and 'wiped' it clean and now.. the waiting game I suppose
Enjoy all your videos.. question if you get this or not that’s ok. Question for you. Is there a transmission stick in the engine compartment of a 2018 Chevy express 2500 van? I can’t get a answer at the Chevy dealership thanks
My daughter's 2014 just did this Friday. At dealer now for warranty work. Hell, I could've done this job in 5 minutes. Might as well use warranty though
This was the most informative video on misfiring that I have ever seen!! As a mechanic myself and shop owner, I can honestly say that this gentleman is in the right business and is doing our field a FANTASTIC service.
Bernie is the Michael Jordan of automotive diagnostics! Great video and lesson here! Thanks ATS‼️
IF you ever get the chance to sit in one of his classes for 8 hours as a Technician, do it as you will be glad you did!
@@dtnel I’ll look forward to that opportunity should it ever come!
By far the best diagnostician ever. ATS equipment is a must have and Bernie shows us how to use it.

I use pico. But man this guy’s on another level.
Damn good stuff!

Bernie has unique techniques and skills that i always enjoy watching him. New strategies and thinking..Love watching your videos Bernie..
Never disappointing Bernie! Although having the right tools, it's the understanding and experience that is the key.

Really getting into these videos Bernie. Have just purchased an Escan because of them. An Escope is on the wish list

I have a 2012 Chevy Cruze 1.4 l it's misfiring would the 2015 and the 2012 diagnosis for what you did on this video be the same
ALWAYS amazing, Mr Thompson!! ALWAYS grateful, me.
Just had this error in my case the piston broke inside of the engine so glad warranty covered it.
I got almost the same problem but this is 04 silverado I did replaced an ignition coil and the customer called me again and surprise I got the same problem 😥
Great video! Good work finding the fault so fast. Which plug did you find the problem in?
Please excuse my ignorance, but How do you disconnect the wiring plug where you found the corrosion?
Thanks man am learning a ton
How could you tell that it was shorting to injector?

Wow cool! Must have really poor seals on that connector 🤔
Or maybe the coolant sensor is leaking up the connector
I drove a Silverado, and was surprised when I pulled off the top of the fuse box that was under the hood. No seals at all from rain or dirt! Unbelievable!
where would we be without a scope?
what if you have fire on cylinder 1 but its week not like the rest?

What’s up with all he white wires someone ire it wong
It looks like someone spliced in a replacement pigtail connector for the ignition module.
