This is the song I first heard him sing that really made me prick up my ears and realise what a beautiful voice he had, with so much control, richness and expression. Love him so much.

Everyone knows his voice didn't realize it's full potential until his hair turned completely white! ;) So young and still such great control and artistry. Hvorostovsky is one of my favorites!

To me his voice was beautiful right from the onset of his career, but he grew even more attractive as he aged.
His voice has been great from the onset of his singing for the world. Period!

Hvorostovsky had perfect tremolo and pitch for all of the music he performed. That is why there was, and always will be , ONE Hvorostovsky. R.I.P.

He had tremolo? I'm no expert on his career, but in all videos I've seen of him his vibrato is normal, not fast and goat-like at all.
I think David is using tremolo to equal vibrato...

Hugh Mungus Vocal chords change and develop differently depending on the person yes. But for all people the vocal folds get stiffer and gain mass as you get older. For some voice types this is a huge demerit since their range doesn't call for low ringing notes. But for lower(ie Bass,Baritones) voice types it means you gain a bit of low end and therefore sound ''richer'' or ''more developed''.But for all voices it means you get stiffer if you don't train accordingly. Anything else that might change a singing voice is mostly a change of technique(such as resonance and vowel shapes) or a change in recording method or setting.
of the some 20 variants I listened to on here tonight, Hvorostovsky, are in the top 3 best rendering this classic! You almost had the soul vibrating...

Wow. This is truly the best version I have ever heard! I don't know why I didn't hear of Dimitri earlier.
I advise you to get on UA-cam his performance in Cardiff at the contest "Singer of the world" (1989). It's just absolute.

It's baroque, granted the harmonies are a bit strange at times, but baroque music calls for lots of improv and ornamentation. Perfectly reasonable accompaniment.
