I wore the trousers in high school instead of the skirt. I'm not trans. I'm not a boy. Wearing trousers did not magically make me less of a girl. The skirts were just hideous while the trousers were comfortable and had pockets. Transphobes: "oh, if I were growing up now, they would have made me be trans." Coming from a girl who grew up liking Star Wars and preferring trousers - nope, nobody ever suggested to me that I was not a girl. If you're not trans, nothing can make you be trans. These people's arguments are so ridiculous. Kids know their gender. Whether you accept that or not will not impact their gender or their perception of their gender, only their mental health.
My mom use to say junk like "If I grew up in these times, people would have told me I was trans." I explained to her why that definitely would not be the case. Then it turned into " I would have thought I was trans." I explained why even if that was the case, that wouldn't exactly be a bad thing, and that it's perfectly normal and okay for children to explore their identities, and all transitioning that would potentially have been done at such a young age is completely reversible. Then it turned into "Well, I just never really ever felt like other girls, so I just assumed you were like me." I then explained again the difference between being trans and being a tomboy, and that I was definitely never a tomboy, nor notably masculine just as much as never being notably feminine and I hated being called a tomboy because it impled 1. I was a girl 2. I was like a boy, and I felt neither applied to me. Then it turned into "Do you think I would have turned out differently if I had been raised in modern times?" Then it turned into "But your dad is straight, and I love him." Then it turned into "I think my true inner self separated from my body would be a boy." At this point, I'm like, "You know, mom, it's never too late." She's really been fixated on this lately.

I, as a kid, was pretty tomboyish (skirts are just ANNOYING ngl), but in secondary school i wore skirts for a while (desperate bid to conform). then switched to trousers cos i’d had enough now, ok, i did end up being trans. it wasn’t about the trousers. i’d never particularly identified with girlhood or womanhood, but so many women had talked about how being a woman sucks i hadn’t even noticed anything was off. i just preferred trousers in a practical sense (still do, but also still love a skirt). but i also ended up, entirely separately to all of this, being trans. i realised when i was like 15. fully came out (name change and all) at 16. i’m now almost 22 - i still tend to wear trousers because they’re just the more practical option. it’s just more sensible
I don’t know what my chromosomes are…but I thoroughly enjoy being a woman. And I can’t imagine what that feeling would feel like if my body didn’t match how I felt. I have much respect for trans people and empathy for the struggles they go through. Y’all keep on being your wonderful selves. ❤

It sounds like it would be easier if that information was simply prominently displayed in your medical records. You also could probably just explain why you could not be pregnant.

I've always felt that transphobia, while it has become its own horrendous monster, is an extension of the hatred for anything fem, with trans women not being inherently feminine enough and trans men not being real men. And I'm sure they don't care, but these gender expectations harm cis people too

About 15 years ago, the church I attend had a special meeting. It was called because the 6 yo child of a couple who attended had come out as trans. The child wanted to be called by their new name & wear clothing more associated with their preferred gender. The child's therapist recommended having this meeting to explain and answer any questions. I believe they had a similar meeting with child's school. After explaining what the meeting was about, the overwhelming support and love for the child threw the therapist for a loop. They had expected backlash, angry parents saying that they didn't want their children to attend Sunday school with a trans kid. Instead the congregation wanted to know how to make the child more comfortable with their transition.
That is an example of real Christianity - my church does the same. It's interesting, isn't it, that across many religions, the loudest "believers" are often those that have strayed the farthest from the true teachings of their faith. Truly I tell you, they have already received their reward.

I'm non-trans female, and went to a school with gender-segregated uniforms, toilets, changing rooms, sports et.c (80s and early 90s). I railed against all of it on the grounds of equality. I don't know how any transphobe can consider themselves feminist. Sending all the love to my trans, intersex and NB siblings!
In my high school, the concert band uniforms were dresses for the girls and tuxes for the boys. We had an AFAB band member who abhorred feminine presenting clothes and had a neutral hairstyle. They were allowed to wear a tux. They were very comfortable, and no one had an issue with it. I don't know their gender identity, thus the neutral pronouns.

I feel like the fact that my home country doesn't have mandatory school uniforms is why so many of my fellow classmates were able to express their gender/sexuality/personality, and everything else, so early on and without a judgement. The only rule was and still is, no flip flops :') But that's just because of injuries wearing them can cause.
I have no problems with uniforms per se. I wore a school uniform my entire school life and appreciated not having to worry about wearing the right clothes to school on top of all the other things. My only gripe is schools that force girls to wear skirts or dresses, especially in the winter. I don't think skirts are a great idea for school for many reasons.

I have never head anyone using David Reimer as an anti transition example before and I wish that I never had...The fact that they would use one of the most horrible and abusive examples of human experimentation as an argument about is full on enrages me. He was abused so servilely that he could not live with the trauma even after he gained back control of his life. He was not trans and should never have been put into that position. What makes it that much worse is that these ass hats genuinely believe that this is what we are doing to children, that we are forcing them to transition and it's despicable to ever insinuate that we are abusing kids like that, what kind of evil psycho would put their own child through such a horrifyingly bad experience?
His story is also a perfect example of why nobody should impose an unwanted gender identity on trans kids. He was not allowed to be himself, and was altered to fit the gender that society had assigned him. This is a horrible experience that many trans people can relate to. Reimer actually supports the argument for trans rights, but like everything else, transphobes have twisted it around and turned their own offenses into accusations.
Also keep in mind that transphobes write exceptions for genital mutilation in the context of circumcision and intersex reassignment surgery. They are the ones forcibly transitioning kids, and they know it. They just think that forcibly transitioning someone to fit into their antiquated and disgusting worldview is ok while allowing someone the freedom to choose their own path is not.
the example of people respecting the pronouns of pets better than humans always gets me cause I have a small dog and a lot of people assume he's female. I'll tell them his masculine name and use he/him pronouns and they'll continue to refer to him as a girl. I usually don't correct twice because I know my dog doesn't care but the lack of listening of the human's half is interesting.
He's right though that everyone assumes that cats are female. I also have 2 boy cats, and they always get called "good girl".....which they're generally quite happy about since their English isn't so good.

Had a great encounter the other day in the dog park. An older lady was chatting to me about an article of "men who think they're women needing to see gynaecologists." I kinda just went, "was this about transmen, out of interest?" She agreed, so I explained that some transmen still have a uterus or ovaries, so they need to get tests and things for there health, just like cis women do. She was a bit taken aback, so I figured to drive the point home with "I mean, I'm not a woman and I still have to see a gynaecologist." The most shocked look I could've imagined on her face. Thankfully she mostly was just ignorant rather than hateful. She did do the "well I know someone whose child is trans, so I'm totally all good with it!" But yeah. Overall she was fairly polite about it, and took my correction in her stride.

However, simply taking it in your stride and being kind is the best option as it shows humility. 2. Being proud is sinful. On misgendering animals: I have two male cats who are only allowed outside with harnesses and one of them (Zen) always wears a pink harness while the other's (Zeal's) harness is always a blue or black one bc I feel those colors go best with each of their shades of gray fur. And without fail anyone who meets my boys uses she/her pronouns for Zen. It's really funny how conciliatory ppl get about misgendering a cat. Like, he doesn't care, he doesn't understand pronouns. I’m just going to assume nobody will see this. I’m trans FtM and still in school. I’m unaccepted in my house and I was also forbidden to use my preferred name and pronouns at school. Til this day I am still extremely paranoid that my mom will find out if I used my name and preferred pronouns at school and follow through on the threat of taking everything I love. I don’t know what to do. It’s exhausting having to keep up with all my work and trying not to out myself in anyway and hell I can’t even follow through on certain social standards because they don’t click in time. I’m so tired. What am I even supposed to do in this situation?

If you can, research local lgbt+ organizations who may be able to help you. Your mother making threats against you is a very serious matter, and they may be able to offer legal assistance because that sounds rather abusive. They may also help you be able to fix your school to be more accepting, as this discrimination is against most laws.
Unfortunately, at this point erring on the side of safety is probably your best bet. Once you're in a safer place you can live authentically and freely. I'm a cis woman, but lived in a viciously abusive household for the majority of my childhood and teens. Survival takes priority. Once you're done surviving, and youre out of that threatening situation, you'll have the space to start _living_ , and even thriving. I'm sorry you're in a situation to receive this advice. Once you're on the other side, we all look forward to greeting the real, authentic and free you. Until then, we'll be here quietly supporting you.
Literally, cis boys and men should know about periods because no matter what, at some point in their life they are going to interact with someone who experiences them, probably multiple people who do.
If the transphobes get their way and start enacting absolute gender segregation, they might prevent AMAB people from interacting with anyone dealing with a period.
and might end up in a position where they're making rules that affect people with periods, whether it's micromanaging an office's or classroom's toilet use, or in parliament/congress.
In terms of "sex based lessons", we used to have home econ.(cooking, sewing, other "wife" stuff) and something called "labour". The latter was mostly woodworking and using tools. So at the end we had boys who could not use a stove and girls who had no idea how to hold a hammer correctly, and everybody was worse off.
That sounds like what my parents had in the 1960s. Boys took shop. Girls took home ec. In the 1980s, when I was in grade 7, everyone had to take a semester of each, and then in grade 8 we had to choose one or the other (so I took shop), and then in grade 9, I took a year of woodworking as an elective. Now they want to go back to how it was in the 1960s? Smh.

Gotta love the one about how women can supposedly "smell and feel" when people are male. Back when I was an afab teen who didn't know what "transgender" was or why I felt the way I did, I can't count the number of times women would look at me uncomfortably or pointedly tell me "this is the *women's* restroom" whenever I went to the bathroom. The number of times I had to awkwardly trigger my own dysphoria by saying, "I am a girl/woman" to ease their fears was insane... and even then some of them seemed suspicious. There were also plenty of times when kids would come up to me and ask, "are you a girl or a boy?" These events happened even after I developed rather noticeably in the chest and hips, much to my chagrin. I never fit in with girls/women. Never. There was always this feeling that I wasn't quite like them - a feeling which clearly existed on both ends. So no. You cannot always tell. You can't even tell when the person standing next to you in the bathroom is, indeed, female. I feel bad for all of the cisgender women who get accused and/or assaulted for not looking "feminine" enough in women's spaces. Transphobes really need to stop transphobing. For all our sakes.

Money was a monster. John was a twin. He had a twin brother and Money had them come to him for "counseling" and he had them play act sexual behavior with each other. It messed them both up so much that they both unalived themselves a few years apart.
There was a Law & Order: SVU (TV) episode that I think was based on that. Only in the show, one of the twins unalived the doctor, but they couldn't figure out which from the DNA because they were identical.
In high school, my sister and I wore the 'boys' pants because we found them more comfortable than the 'girls' ones. No one said anything (we're both cis). It isn't just about gender but it's also a personal preference to clothes
When I went through school (Australia, 90s-10s) sex ed was coed. I don't know what the reasoning was, but it was definitely a good decision, imo. The whole concept of "you don't get this information because it's not about you specifically" is so bizarre in education. Like, what if they applied that to literally any other subject? "You're not a lightbulb, so you don't get to know how they work!"
Also in Australia, 80’s to 99. In my primary school, they started us out together, then separated, then together again. The whole thing was done over 3 days and that was it. I think the idea was so we’d feel comfortable asking sex-specific questions. But they taught everything to everyone. In high school, there was no separation.
I live in America and our schools have no consistent way to teach sex ed. But in my school district in the '90s the class itself was coed but the sexes were split up for some specific subjects. I don't think the girls sat in when we covered testicular self-exams, and the girls went off on their own for some other subjects. I'm not going to argue the subject either way, but I think the idea was something like the logic between gender and bathrooms or other things. We grow up learning to be casual among the people of the same gender about some things where we would feel awkward if we were on people of the other gender. Plus kids can be cruel and it might have been considered better to leave those that it didn't apply to out of the conversation. Ideally it certainly does make sense to have everyone learn all of this stuff. Even if it doesn't apply to your body you might have a partner one day for whom it does.
I was in school for the same time period is aust. I think the idea is seperate them because the boys could be really immature. But in my experience it was co-ed...but....most of the class was about men and their anatomy, issues, exams, "this is how to use a condom", stds and "don't have sex". I learned jack shit about the female body outside of periods. Like....i had to find out female anatomy and issues on my own.....as an adult. But it was a catholic school
I'm a hormonally intersex person who, until i started puberty, looked like a boy in all outward appearances. However, once puberty started having it's wicked and confusing way with me, my body absolutely did not develop the same way that the other boys did.. I grew boobs, hips and curvy bits that were very obviously different and I also then put on a lot of weight. It was assumed that my body shape was due to excess weight for years. Decades later, I lost that weight and still had the boobs, hips and curvy bits there for all to see. It wasn't until I was around 40 years old and single once again that i decided to embrace this body of mine.. Pre HRT blood tests were to confirm what until then was only a deep suspicion I'd had for decades.. In many ways, it made my decision to transition a lot easier. The effects that HRT had on my mood swings, anger management and emotional maturity have been so good. The constant battle my endocrine system was in against itself was destroying my life and happiness. Now I'm testosterone free, life feels like it should. I've discovered what self love feels like and my personality has blossomed in ways I could never have anticipated. I've become a better human being in every way that matters and my only regret is not working all this out decades ago. 3.5 yrs HRT now at 48. It's never too late to choose life and live it as the person you really are. Best decision I ever made. 😊

Just recently I ran into some misogynistic person who ranted about "being replaced by feminism", and suggested that the solution would be to "remove women from all the jobs they occupy". And he was completely baffled when I pointed out that this was not very consistent.
The toilet stickers are especially weird considering that there are cis women who stand to pee. Shewee markets itself to people in ski gear, or military(-like) uniform, formal gowns, or certain medical situations, like pregnancy or injury. Just imagine, you have considered if you really, really need to pee, compromised to avoid the faff with sitting down, get to a stall, raise the seat to be considerate of other people using the facilities and then there's just a sticker accusing you of child abuse.

Of course gender dysphoria is in the mind, nobodies denying that, that’s why there’s treatment for it. Nobodies changing how they were born, they’re getting treated for a disorder. Transgender people are born transgender.
The rule "Children's actual sex must be known to everyone" is acknowledgment that "actual" sex is a nonsensical, irrelevant classification. A child's gender CAN be indentified. It is the gender he or she presents as. Arguing about "actual sex" is acknowledgement that sometimes an individual's apparent gender does not match assigned gender at birth, and that they want to force children to conform to a gender that isn't physically obvious. They're assuming that a trans gender identity is a deception, not the individual's attempt to express their true sense of identity. It shows that transphobia is at its heart homophobia, because the transphobe doesn't want to find a woman attractive, and then find out they're a trans woman. And these rules aren't even meant for adults, they're for kids and teenagers, who probably just want to wear clothes they like.
The people who want mandatory genital inspections for children and to force those kids to wear armbands indicating their gender... these are the people claiming that WE'RE creeps xD

I am abrosexual and for the longest time (from when I started having sexual attraction in my teens untill I was 21) I never knew what exactly I was I never 'stayed' straight or gay or bi. It genuinely confused me and frustrated me cause I couldn't figure out what I am, it took untill I learned what abrosexuality is at 21 to figure out that is what I am. It was a bit of comfort in a way knowing there is a term and understanding that a bit more. If I learned about stuff like fluid sexuality (what abrosexual is) in sex ed or anywhere else I would NEVER have spend a decade ish of my life confused about sexuality. This is what I want, and I think most people want to tell kids these things exist. Not knowing that fluid sexuality was a thing didn't make me not sexually fluid it just made me confused.
Its stupid to listen to the hate. Even if being trans was in any way hurtful and destructive for an individual, noone should have the right to be able to legislate what others do with their body.
That works so long as children aren’t being transitioned. We let adults engage in harmful behaviors for themselves such as smoking and drinking because they’re capable of understanding the significance of the risks and detriments. In general, we don’t allow children to engage in those activities.

One of my favorite rebellions about gendered clothes came in 2017. The weather was rather warm (30˚C) and the boys were not allowed to wear shorts; many chose to borrow skirts because girls could wear them and they were a comfortable and freeing experience.
As a cis person, i feel like everyone should question their gender personally! I questioned my gender, tried on all the labels, tried out all the pronouns, and ended up settling on being cis - and now I'm very comfortable where i stand and am very healthy! Everyone should question their gender, so i dont understand why people get so upset over it sometimes
Agreed, I think we should normalize and encourage kids to question their gender (and gender norms while we are at it) at least once in their lives. Seems like a healthy thing to do that will leave you more confident in themselves later on, I think.

Ooo ooo story time about school uniform. I remember as a 7 year old kid, I used to hang out with mostly girls at breaktimes. I had a very gender neutral upbringing, but not intentionally so. honestly- I don't really think I understood just how important everyone thought the differences between boys and girls were. I wanted to be like my friends, I wanted to wear my hair long and be pretty like them, and I was allowed to- we would braid each other's hair, it was lovely. We all wore the same uniform. But then summer of a certain school year came around, I think it might have been year five? and all of my friends got these really pretty red and white summer dresses... and I was given this ugly red polo shirt and a pair of shorts. I remember being sat with them in the grass at lunch, now dressed very differently from all of my friends, and I asked "how come you all got dresses, and I got this?" One of my friends said "Because you are a boy? boys don't wear dresses". "What if I want to be a girl instead?" "I don't think you can? You can't be a girl" And that was the first time I ever remember feeling what I now understand to be gender dysphoria. Something about being told that hurt me in a way I didn't understand. I started to cry. My friends were concerned for me, and one of my friends said "but you can pretend to be a girl with us if you like!" The next day she snuck a spare summer dress into her bookbag, for me to wear at lunchtime. And that's what I did for a few weeks, I was so happy. Until I was caught doing it. I decided one day that I wouldn't change back before returning to class. I kept my hair braided, and I kept the dress on. We all got into trouble. The school put me in lunchtime exclusion for a month, parents were involved. When I was finally allowed back outside for lunch, most of my friends didn't want to hang out with me anymore, it had been explained to them, just as it was to me, that what we had been doing was very serious and very wrong. This was the start of decades of shame and internal struggle, until I eventually came out in my 20s. Funny how a bunch of primary school children managed to figure out the correct approach to transgender identity among ourselves - and then the responsible adults in the room basically crushed me and cut me off from my friends instead.

But my early interests weren't really dictated to me based on that, it just didn't come up a lot. If I wanted to be the pink power-ranger for Halloween, nobody stepped in to say I couldn't. After the thing with the dress at school, the usual "cissification" routine was put into play, telling me how I should behave, dress, act based on my gender assigned at birth. It just made me confused and miserable. Considering I'm a trans woman as an adult- it obviously worked super well and didn't just lead to a whole bunch of confusion growing up.
it's... one of the few that has a grain of truth. testosterone can make sweat more pungent. A change many in transition have noticed. You can't smell "maleness" though.

My k-8 school was a private hippy schoool, so my 4th grade bio class included a lesson on what it means to be intersex, trans, and cisgender. We had this bi-weekly lesson called "meet the person" where we'd have a zoom call with a person from the group we were learning about in our weekly biology class. Our first one was when we got to meet a gay man who talked to us about his life and what it means to be LGBT. He also talked to us about the different labels of sexuality (Gay, bi, pan, aro, ace, aroace, straight, questioning, polyam), and how his husband (who is pansexual) describes himself. It was very cool. We also got to talk to a transwoman during one of our "meet the person" zoom calls. The other ones I remember were an intersex man, a man with mixed race parents .(he said his dad was Indian, and his mom was half Irish and half Columbian) We also met a woman with vitiligo, a man who is an amputee who also has heterochromia. (from the elbow down his left arm is amputated because of a serious motorcycle accident. Also, his left eye is blue and his right eye is brown.) We also met a woman with ADHD and OCD, who talked about how the 2 conditions affect her and how her need for perfect organization conflicts with her lack of motivation to cleen things cuz of her adhd. We also met a blind man, who happens to also be partially def in his right ear, and we met a fully def woman who is also Blue & Orange color blind, and she was really cool because she has never been able to hear. She told us that the extent of her hearing loss means she has a cohler implant which allows her to sort of hear again, but she had our teeacher type out our questions and comments into the zoom chat so she could know what we said. We also met an autistic man, who told us his special interests were golf, the nutcracker ballet, The shining by Steven King (but only the book version), power puff girls, and water polo. Also, we met and a man with down syndrome, and he introduced us to his 2 cats at the end of the zoom. This was a fun and interactive way to learn about the biology we were studying while learning with people who had these lived experiences. And each week we learned about the medical contition/bio charastic, and then the friday lesson WAS the one where we met the person. Also, this heppened every other week, because we still did normal biology stuff too and didn't spend the whole time lerning about medical issues and all that.
The school “sex segregated rules” post made me genuinely uncomfortable. Ugh. I’m just completely baffled by what “rules or lessons” are meant to be sex segregated. I don’t even think sex ed should be segregated (or if it is just for when they’re really young and might feel too uncomfortable to ask questions otherwise) I think everyone should be learning the same information.

if you're looking for a new franchise to get into after buffy, i recommend The Librarians. It starts with a trilogy of made for tv movies, and then it got a tv show that was really good, and now it's getting another tv show coming in 2024. It has strong female leads and some queer representation (like one of those strong female leads being bisexual and polyamorous) and is in the same type of genre of tv as shows like buffy about fighting magical threats and solving magical mysteries with a side of scifi. I like to describe it as Indiana Jones with magic, better worldbuilding, and all the characters are obviously neurodivergent.
The movies are more “easy fun” media and the show, while based on the movies, is more in-depth fantasy/sci-fi. I love both, but they’re for different moods. Dean Devlin, the genius go gave us Leverage, Leverage: Redemption, and Almost Paradise, is also responsible for The Librarians. There are many ND characters, which is great to see. I wouldn’t have thought to connect Buffy directly to Librarians, but it makes a lot of sense. Highly recommend anything Dean Devlin tbh.

So much of women's current fashion started out as men's fashion, including makeup, leggings, purses, and high heels. "Trousers" were successfully generalised for everyone too. Dresses and skirts should be next and even cut and styled for men.
I remember at college back in 2010 an email went out to every single student telling us that one of the lecturers had transitioned. Why? About the antivenom thing: Let's let them cook for a bit and say that this highly specific and for some reason gendered antivenom exists. How does it distinguish between male and female physiology? Because contrary to popular belief apart from some organs being arranged a bit differently male and female bodies are actually not that different. The only thing that comes to mind is if they have some sort of chemical interaction with hormones, in which case it depends on whether or not the trans women is on HRT and how long she has been on HRT for. I have been on HRT for 1.5 years now and my hormone-levels are very much in the range of a cis woman. Also to be much more realistic: 1) I do not believe such a miracle cover all bases anti-venom exists 2) You could achieve similar results by binding down the limb the snake bit to stop the spread of the poison 3) If your miracle cover all bases antivenom is that volatile based on miniscule concentrations of highly specific molecules in your blood, SURELY you would also split them by blood-type, right?

FunFact: Not only is the "default-setting" in human fetal development to grow female genitalia, but the Y-chromosome doesn't contain the "masculinity-gene" … because _there is none._ The Y-chromosome contains: 1) A bunch of junk-DNA that appears to do nothing. 2) A few genes that are also on the X-chromosome. 3) A few genes that are not on the X-chromosome, but serve the same function as counterpart-genes on the X-chromosome. 4) The lone-gene that turns on the androgens at a specific point in fetal development. Then it shuts off and does nothing ever again for the remainder of your life. 5) Genes encoding proteins that are specific to sperm production. #4 and #5 are the only genes that are "specifically male", and only #5 is a "specifically-male gene" active during a cis-man's adult lifetime. I wouldn't define a cis-man's maleness based on the ability to produce sperm, so #5 doesn't exactly "confer maleness". Other than genitalia, all traits that we identify with "maleness" are a result of marinating in high-testosterone levels for a few years. In cis-men, this is due to the testes, not the Y-chromosome. So is the presence or absence of functioning testes what makes a person a man? Saying, "yes," is telling cis- men who've lost a ball to testicular cancer that they're no longer men. It's also a rather medieval idea that asserts that eunuchs aren't "real men". Which is a really barbaric thing to believe.

In like Kindergarten or Grade 1 we were taught about bathing-suit parts and places not to touch, how to respect boundaries and that there were differences between people. In like Grades 2-4 we vaguely touched on a couple more terms for anatomy units, which naturally had students ask stuff like, why does the guy picture have an adam's apple but the girl picture doesn't? Then in middle school we learned about hormones and puberty. And early high school we learned about the opposite sex and the mechanics of starting a family. There is really no difficulty in adding the idea of trans people to this. Instead of saying "boys and girls are different" say "some people have different bodies" When you start learning about hormones, explain how for nearly a hundred years now doctors have been able to give hormones to fix various ailments and that while most people will naturally go through puberty, there are people (cis, trans, intersex, other) that sometimes need to take medicine to make sure they grow strong and healthy. And heck. I'm only a tutor, not a teacher yet so I have no say in what gets taught. But two of the girls I help, they're 9 years old, and they already have been taught about trans people. About how a person feels inside doesn't always match the outside but that doesn't make them strange or bad. Sure, I don't know the ins and outs of how or what all they were taught, but they seem to understand it more fully than most adults I met.

AFAB children in my school were REQUIRED to wear skirts. The students kept trying to veto that rule, but it kept getting rejected, even in the winter time. "No, just wear stockings. No pants." David Reimer was not the first “trans” kid (he also wasn’t trans, obviously). There are cases of children receiving hormone therapy in the 40s, and socially transitioning under the advice of doctors in the nineteenth century.

My mom use to say junk like "If I grew up in these times, people would have told me I was trans." I explained to her why that definitely would not be the case. Then it turned into " I would have thought I was trans." I explained why even if that was the case, that wouldn't exactly be a bad thing, and that it's perfectly normal and okay for children to explore their identities, and all transitioning that would potentially have been done at such a young age is completely reversible. Then it turned into "Well, I just never really ever felt like other girls, so I just assumed you were like me." I then explained again the difference between being trans and being a tomboy, and that I was definitely never a tomboy, nor notably masculine just as much as never being notably feminine and I hated being called a tomboy because it impled 1. I was a girl 2. I was like a boy, and I felt neither applied to me. Then it turned into "Do you think I would have turned out differently if I had been raised in modern times?" Then it turned into "But your dad is straight, and I love him." Then it turned into "I think my true inner self separated from my body would be a boy." At this point, I'm like, "You know, mom, it's never too late." She's really been fixated on this lately.

I, as a kid, was pretty tomboyish (skirts are just ANNOYING ngl), but in secondary school i wore skirts for a while (desperate bid to conform). then switched to trousers cos i’d had enough
now, ok, i did end up being trans. it wasn’t about the trousers. i’d never particularly identified with girlhood or womanhood, but so many women had talked about how being a woman sucks i hadn’t even noticed anything was off. i just preferred trousers in a practical sense (still do, but also still love a skirt).
but i also ended up, entirely separately to all of this, being trans. i realised when i was like 15. fully came out (name change and all) at 16. i’m now almost 22 - i still tend to wear trousers because they’re just the more practical option. it’s just more sensible

I've always felt that transphobia, while it has become its own horrendous monster, is an extension of the hatred for anything fem, with trans women not being inherently feminine enough and trans men not being real men. And I'm sure they don't care, but these gender expectations harm cis people too

About 15 years ago, the church I attend had a special meeting. It was called because the 6 yo child of a couple who attended had come out as trans. The child wanted to be called by their new name & wear clothing more associated with their preferred gender. The child's therapist recommended having this meeting to explain and answer any questions. I believe they had a similar meeting with child's school. After explaining what the meeting was about, the overwhelming support and love for the child threw the therapist for a loop. They had expected backlash, angry parents saying that they didn't want their children to attend Sunday school with a trans kid. Instead the congregation wanted to know how to make the child more comfortable with their transition.
And that's how the Christian community should act towards others!

I'm non-trans female, and went to a school with gender-segregated uniforms, toilets, changing rooms, sports et.c (80s and early 90s). I railed against all of it on the grounds of equality. I don't know how any transphobe can consider themselves feminist. Sending all the love to my trans, intersex and NB siblings!
In my high school, the concert band uniforms were dresses for the girls and tuxes for the boys. We had an AFAB band member who abhorred feminine presenting clothes and had a neutral hairstyle. They were allowed to wear a tux. They were very comfortable, and no one had an issue with it.
I don't know their gender identity, thus the neutral pronouns.
I love you for this. I tried to get unisex toilets at my school, and someone brought up rapists. So the teachers shut it down. Ugh
What about the people who are not comfortable with sharing these spaces, how are you assuring equal consideration for them?

I feel like the fact that my home country doesn't have mandatory school uniforms is why so many of my fellow classmates were able to express their gender/sexuality/personality, and everything else, so early on and without a judgement. The only rule was and still is, no flip flops :') But that's just because of injuries wearing them can cause.
I have no problems with uniforms per se. I wore a school uniform my entire school life and appreciated not having to worry about wearing the right clothes to school on top of all the other things. My only gripe is schools that force girls to wear skirts or dresses, especially in the winter. I don't think skirts are a great idea for school for many reasons.

I have never head anyone using David Reimer as an anti transition example before and I wish that I never had...The fact that they would use one of the most horrible and abusive examples of human experimentation as an argument about is full on enrages me. He was abused so servilely that he could not live with the trauma even after he gained back control of his life. He was not trans and should never have been put into that position.
What makes it that much worse is that these ass hats genuinely believe that this is what we are doing to children, that we are forcing them to transition and it's despicable to ever insinuate that we are abusing kids like that, what kind of evil psycho would put their own child through such a horrifyingly bad experience?
His story is also a perfect example of why nobody should impose an unwanted gender identity on trans kids. He was not allowed to be himself, and was altered to fit the gender that society had assigned him. This is a horrible experience that many trans people can relate to. Reimer actually supports the argument for trans rights, but like everything else, transphobes have twisted it around and turned their own offenses into accusations.

Also keep in mind that transphobes write exceptions for genital mutilation in the context of circumcision and intersex reassignment surgery. They are the ones forcibly transitioning kids, and they know it. They just think that forcibly transitioning someone to fit into their antiquated and disgusting worldview is ok while allowing someone the freedom to choose their own path is not.

the example of people respecting the pronouns of pets better than humans always gets me cause I have a small dog and a lot of people assume he's female. I'll tell them his masculine name and use he/him pronouns and they'll continue to refer to him as a girl. I usually don't correct twice because I know my dog doesn't care but the lack of listening of the human's half is interesting.
Same with my cat (though TBF his name sounds feminine).
He's right though that everyone assumes that cats are female. I also have 2 boy cats, and they always get called "good girl".....which they're generally quite happy about since their English isn't so good.

Had a great encounter the other day in the dog park. An older lady was chatting to me about an article of "men who think they're women needing to see gynaecologists." I kinda just went, "was this about transmen, out of interest?" She agreed, so I explained that some transmen still have a uterus or ovaries, so they need to get tests and things for there health, just like cis women do. She was a bit taken aback, so I figured to drive the point home with "I mean, I'm not a woman and I still have to see a gynaecologist." The most shocked look I could've imagined on her face.
Thankfully she mostly was just ignorant rather than hateful. She did do the "well I know someone whose child is trans, so I'm totally all good with it!" But yeah. Overall she was fairly polite about it, and took my correction in her stride.

I’m just going to assume nobody will see this. I’m trans FtM and still in school. I’m unaccepted in my house and I was also forbidden to use my preferred name and pronouns at school. Til this day I am still extremely paranoid that my mom will find out if I used my name and preferred pronouns at school and follow through on the threat of taking everything I love. I don’t know what to do. It’s exhausting having to keep up with all my work and trying not to out myself in anyway and hell I can’t even follow through on certain social standards because they don’t click in time. I’m so tired. What am I even supposed to do in this situation?

If you can, research local lgbt+ organizations who may be able to help you. Your mother making threats against you is a very serious matter, and they may be able to offer legal assistance because that sounds rather abusive.
They may also help you be able to fix your school to be more accepting, as this discrimination is against most laws.
Be safe. Bide your time until you get to a place where you can be yourself without those threats hanging over you.

Unfortunately, at this point erring on the side of safety is probably your best bet. Once you're in a safer place you can live authentically and freely. I'm a cis woman, but lived in a viciously abusive household for the majority of my childhood and teens. Survival takes priority. Once you're done surviving, and youre out of that threatening situation, you'll have the space to start _living_ , and even thriving.
I'm sorry you're in a situation to receive this advice. Once you're on the other side, we all look forward to greeting the real, authentic and free you. Until then, we'll be here quietly supporting you.
Literally, cis boys and men should know about periods because no matter what, at some point in their life they are going to interact with someone who experiences them, probably multiple people who do.
If the transphobes get their way and start enacting absolute gender segregation, they might prevent AMAB people from interacting with anyone dealing with a period.
and might end up in a position where they're making rules that affect people with periods, whether it's micromanaging an office's or classroom's toilet use, or in parliament/congress.
Most learn about it in elementary school sex-ed.

In terms of "sex based lessons", we used to have home econ.(cooking, sewing, other "wife" stuff) and something called "labour". The latter was mostly woodworking and using tools. So at the end we had boys who could not use a stove and girls who had no idea how to hold a hammer correctly, and everybody was worse off.
That sounds like what my parents had in the 1960s. Boys took shop. Girls took home ec. In the 1980s, when I was in grade 7, everyone had to take a semester of each, and then in grade 8 we had to choose one or the other (so I took shop), and then in grade 9, I took a year of woodworking as an elective. Now they want to go back to how it was in the 1960s? Smh.

Gotta love the one about how women can supposedly "smell and feel" when people are male. Back when I was an afab teen who didn't know what "transgender" was or why I felt the way I did, I can't count the number of times women would look at me uncomfortably or pointedly tell me "this is the *women's* restroom" whenever I went to the bathroom. The number of times I had to awkwardly trigger my own dysphoria by saying, "I am a girl/woman" to ease their fears was insane... and even then some of them seemed suspicious. There were also plenty of times when kids would come up to me and ask, "are you a girl or a boy?" These events happened even after I developed rather noticeably in the chest and hips, much to my chagrin.
I never fit in with girls/women. Never. There was always this feeling that I wasn't quite like them - a feeling which clearly existed on both ends. So no. You cannot always tell. You can't even tell when the person standing next to you in the bathroom is, indeed, female. I feel bad for all of the cisgender women who get accused and/or assaulted for not looking "feminine" enough in women's spaces. Transphobes really need to stop transphobing. For all our sakes.

Money was a monster. John was a twin. He had a twin brother and Money had them come to him for "counseling" and he had them play act sexual behavior with each other. It messed them both up so much that they both unalived themselves a few years apart.
There was a Law & Order: SVU (TV) episode that I think was based on that. Only in the show, one of the twins unalived the doctor, but they couldn't figure out which from the DNA because they were identical.
Which is why anyone that uses him as an example when it comes to trans people should be disregarded

When I went through school (Australia, 90s-10s) sex ed was coed. I don't know what the reasoning was, but it was definitely a good decision, imo. The whole concept of "you don't get this information because it's not about you specifically" is so bizarre in education. Like, what if they applied that to literally any other subject? "You're not a lightbulb, so you don't get to know how they work!"
Also in Australia, 80’s to 99. In my primary school, they started us out together, then separated, then together again. The whole thing was done over 3 days and that was it. I think the idea was so we’d feel comfortable asking sex-specific questions. But they taught everything to everyone. In high school, there was no separation.
Sex ed is still coed in my school (all girls school, even though I'm a boy), even though it's less specific, we learn enough
I live in America and our schools have no consistent way to teach sex ed. But in my school district in the '90s the class itself was coed but the sexes were split up for some specific subjects. I don't think the girls sat in when we covered testicular self-exams, and the girls went off on their own for some other subjects.
I'm not going to argue the subject either way, but I think the idea was something like the logic between gender and bathrooms or other things. We grow up learning to be casual among the people of the same gender about some things where we would feel awkward if we were on people of the other gender. Plus kids can be cruel and it might have been considered better to leave those that it didn't apply to out of the conversation.
Ideally it certainly does make sense to have everyone learn all of this stuff. Even if it doesn't apply to your body you might have a partner one day for whom it does.

But in my experience it was co-ed...but....most of the class was about men and their anatomy, issues, exams, "this is how to use a condom", stds and "don't have sex".

I'm a hormonally intersex person who, until i started puberty, looked like a boy in all outward appearances.
However, once puberty started having it's wicked and confusing way with me, my body absolutely did not develop the same way that the other boys did.. I grew boobs, hips and curvy bits that were very obviously different and I also then put on a lot of weight. It was assumed that my body shape was due to excess weight for years.
Decades later, I lost that weight and still had the boobs, hips and curvy bits there for all to see. It wasn't until I was around 40 years old and single once again that i decided to embrace this body of mine..
Pre HRT blood tests were to confirm what until then was only a deep suspicion I'd had for decades..
In many ways, it made my decision to transition a lot easier.
The effects that HRT had on my mood swings, anger management and emotional maturity have been so good.
The constant battle my endocrine system was in against itself was destroying my life and happiness.
Now I'm testosterone free, life feels like it should. I've discovered what self love feels like and my personality has blossomed in ways I could never have anticipated.
I've become a better human being in every way that matters and my only regret is not working all this out decades ago.
3.5 yrs HRT now at 48.
It's never too late to choose life and live it as the person you really are.
Best decision I ever made.

The rule "Children's actual sex must be known to everyone" is acknowledgment that "actual" sex is a nonsensical, irrelevant classification. A child's gender CAN be indentified. It is the gender he or she presents as. Arguing about "actual sex" is acknowledgement that sometimes an individual's apparent gender does not match assigned gender at birth, and that they want to force children to conform to a gender that isn't physically obvious.
They're assuming that a trans gender identity is a deception, not the individual's attempt to express their true sense of identity. It shows that transphobia is at its heart homophobia, because the transphobe doesn't want to find a woman attractive, and then find out they're a trans woman. And these rules aren't even meant for adults, they're for kids and teenagers, who probably just want to wear clothes they like.

I am abrosexual and for the longest time (from when I started having sexual attraction in my teens untill I was 21) I never knew what exactly I was I never 'stayed' straight or gay or bi.
It genuinely confused me and frustrated me cause I couldn't figure out what I am, it took untill I learned what abrosexuality is at 21 to figure out that is what I am. It was a bit of comfort in a way knowing there is a term and understanding that a bit more.
If I learned about stuff like fluid sexuality (what abrosexual is) in sex ed or anywhere else I would NEVER have spend a decade ish of my life confused about sexuality. This is what I want, and I think most people want to tell kids these things exist. Not knowing that fluid sexuality was a thing didn't make me not sexually fluid it just made me confused.
Its stupid to listen to the hate. Even if being trans was in any way hurtful and destructive for an individual, noone should have the right to be able to legislate what others do with their body.
That works so long as children aren’t being transitioned. We let adults engage in harmful behaviors for themselves such as smoking and drinking because they’re capable of understanding the significance of the risks and detriments. In general, we don’t allow children to engage in those activities.

One of my favorite rebellions about gendered clothes came in 2017. The weather was rather warm (30˚C) and the boys were not allowed to wear shorts; many chose to borrow skirts because girls could wear them and they were a comfortable and freeing experience.
As a cis person, i feel like everyone should question their gender personally! I questioned my gender, tried on all the labels, tried out all the pronouns, and ended up settling on being cis - and now I'm very comfortable where i stand and am very healthy! Everyone should question their gender, so i dont understand why people get so upset over it sometimes
Agreed, I think we should normalize and encourage kids to question their gender (and gender norms while we are at it) at least once in their lives. Seems like a healthy thing to do that will leave you more confident in themselves later on, I think.

I remember as a 7 year old kid, I used to hang out with mostly girls at breaktimes. I had a very gender neutral upbringing, but not intentionally so.
honestly- I don't really think I understood just how important everyone thought the differences between boys and girls were. I wanted to be like my friends, I wanted to wear my hair long and be pretty like them, and I was allowed to- we would braid each other's hair, it was lovely. We all wore the same uniform.
But then summer of a certain school year came around, I think it might have been year five? and all of my friends got these really pretty red and white summer dresses... and I was given this ugly red polo shirt and a pair of shorts. I remember being sat with them in the grass at lunch, now dressed very differently from all of my friends, and I asked "how come you all got dresses, and I got this?"
One of my friends said
"Because you are a boy? boys don't wear dresses".
"What if I want to be a girl instead?"
"I don't think you can? You can't be a girl"
And that was the first time I ever remember feeling what I now understand to be gender dysphoria. Something about being told that hurt me in a way I didn't understand. I started to cry. My friends were concerned for me, and one of my friends said "but you can pretend to be a girl with us if you like!"
The next day she snuck a spare summer dress into her bookbag, for me to wear at lunchtime. And that's what I did for a few weeks, I was so happy.
Until I was caught doing it. I decided one day that I wouldn't change back before returning to class. I kept my hair braided, and I kept the dress on.
We all got into trouble. The school put me in lunchtime exclusion for a month, parents were involved. When I was finally allowed back outside for lunch, most of my friends didn't want to hang out with me anymore, it had been explained to them, just as it was to me, that what we had been doing was very serious and very wrong.
This was the start of decades of shame and internal struggle, until I eventually came out in my 20s.
Funny how a bunch of primary school children managed to figure out the correct approach to transgender identity among ourselves - and then the responsible adults in the room basically crushed me and cut me off from my friends instead.

But my early interests weren't really dictated to me based on that, it just didn't come up a lot. If I wanted to be the pink power-ranger for Halloween, nobody stepped in to say I couldn't.
After the thing with the dress at school, the usual "cissification" routine was put into play, telling me how I should behave, dress, act based on my gender assigned at birth.
It just made me confused and miserable.
Considering I'm a trans woman as an adult- it obviously worked super well and didn't just lead to a whole bunch of confusion growing up.

My k-8 school was a private hippy schoool, so my 4th grade bio class included a lesson on what it means to be intersex, trans, and cisgender. We had this bi-weekly lesson called "meet the person" where we'd have a zoom call with a person from the group we were learning about in our weekly biology class. Our first one was when we got to meet a gay man who talked to us about his life and what it means to be LGBT. He also talked to us about the different labels of sexuality (Gay, bi, pan, aro, ace, aroace, straight, questioning, polyam), and how his husband (who is pansexual) describes himself. It was very cool. We also got to talk to a transwoman during one of our "meet the person" zoom calls. The other ones I remember were an intersex man, a man with mixed race parents .(he said his dad was Indian, and his mom was half Irish and half Columbian) We also met a woman with vitiligo, a man who is an amputee who also has heterochromia. (from the elbow down his left arm is amputated because of a serious motorcycle accident. Also, his left eye is blue and his right eye is brown.) We also met a woman with ADHD and OCD, who talked about how the 2 conditions affect her and how her need for perfect organization conflicts with her lack of motivation to cleen things cuz of her adhd. We also met a blind man, who happens to also be partially def in his right ear, and we met a fully def woman who is also Blue & Orange color blind, and she was really cool because she has never been able to hear. She told us that the extent of her hearing loss means she has a cohler implant which allows her to sort of hear again, but she had our teeacher type out our questions and comments into the zoom chat so she could know what we said. We also met an autistic man, who told us his special interests were golf, the nutcracker ballet, The shining by Steven King (but only the book version), power puff girls, and water polo. Also, we met and a man with down syndrome, and he introduced us to his 2 cats at the end of the zoom. This was a fun and interactive way to learn about the biology we were studying while learning with people who had these lived experiences. And each week we learned about the medical contition/bio charastic, and then the friday lesson WAS the one where we met the person. Also, this heppened every other week, because we still did normal biology stuff too and didn't spend the whole time lerning about medical issues and all that.

if you're looking for a new franchise to get into after buffy, i recommend The Librarians. It starts with a trilogy of made for tv movies, and then it got a tv show that was really good, and now it's getting another tv show coming in 2024. It has strong female leads and some queer representation (like one of those strong female leads being bisexual and polyamorous) and is in the same type of genre of tv as shows like buffy about fighting magical threats and solving magical mysteries with a side of scifi. I like to describe it as Indiana Jones with magic, better worldbuilding, and all the characters are obviously neurodivergent.
The movies are more “easy fun” media and the show, while based on the movies, is more in-depth fantasy/sci-fi. I love both, but they’re for different moods. Dean Devlin, the genius go gave us Leverage, Leverage: Redemption, and Almost Paradise, is also responsible for The Librarians. There are many ND characters, which is great to see. I wouldn’t have thought to connect Buffy directly to Librarians, but it makes a lot of sense. Highly recommend anything Dean Devlin tbh.

About the antivenom thing:
Let's let them cook for a bit and say that this highly specific and for some reason gendered antivenom exists. How does it distinguish between male and female physiology? Because contrary to popular belief apart from some organs being arranged a bit differently male and female bodies are actually not that different. The only thing that comes to mind is if they have some sort of chemical interaction with hormones, in which case it depends on whether or not the trans women is on HRT and how long she has been on HRT for. I have been on HRT for 1.5 years now and my hormone-levels are very much in the range of a cis woman.
Also to be much more realistic:
1) I do not believe such a miracle cover all bases anti-venom exists
2) You could achieve similar results by binding down the limb the snake bit to stop the spread of the poison
3) If your miracle cover all bases antivenom is that volatile based on miniscule concentrations of highly specific molecules in your blood, SURELY you would also split them by blood-type, right?
These transphobes probably believe their Y-chromosome is the only thing keeping their pee-pee from falling off.
FunFact: Not only is the "default-setting" in human fetal development to grow female genitalia, but the Y-chromosome doesn't contain the "masculinity-gene" … because _there is none._ The Y-chromosome contains:
1) A bunch of junk-DNA that appears to do nothing.
2) A few genes that are also on the X-chromosome.
3) A few genes that are not on the X-chromosome, but serve the same function as counterpart-genes on the X-chromosome.
4) The lone-gene that turns on the androgens at a specific point in fetal development. Then it shuts off and does nothing ever again for the remainder of your life.
5) Genes encoding proteins that are specific to sperm production.
#4 and #5 are the only genes that are "specifically male", and only #5 is a "specifically-male gene" active during a cis-man's adult lifetime.
I wouldn't define a cis-man's maleness based on the ability to produce sperm, so #5 doesn't exactly "confer maleness".
Other than genitalia, all traits that we identify with "maleness" are a result of marinating in high-testosterone levels for a few years. In cis-men, this is due to the testes, not the Y-chromosome.
So is the presence or absence of functioning testes what makes a person a man? Saying, "yes," is telling cis- men who've lost a ball to testicular cancer that they're no longer men. It's also a rather medieval idea that asserts that eunuchs aren't "real men". Which is a really barbaric thing to believe.
It really is telling that they had to come up with a completely fictional thing that is biologically implausible if not outright possible in order to make their case.

You can make it sound as ridiculous as you want, doesn't mean that children aren't highly gullible and be made to believe all kinds of nonsense. Stop pretending that a lot of this stuff can't be very confusing to kids. Their parents are allowed to not want their kids to be exposed to this ideology.

@@velvetbutterfly that really depends on what and how. How old are the children this needs to be taught to? Cause I think children below the age of 10 generally don't have the capacity to understand these complex topics. Especially when you see many adults talking about it as if it is so difficult and hard to know what you are, but in the same breath we expect kids to be able to understand this.
This does not need to be taught, all you need to teach kids is to respect and be nice to each other. When stuff like this comes up you can comment on it, and move on. We don't need to dedicate time to fill children's minds with this stuff unprompted.

In like Kindergarten or Grade 1 we were taught about bathing-suit parts and places not to touch, how to respect boundaries and that there were differences between people. In like Grades 2-4 we vaguely touched on a couple more terms for anatomy units, which naturally had students ask stuff like, why does the guy picture have an adam's apple but the girl picture doesn't?
Then in middle school we learned about hormones and puberty.
And early high school we learned about the opposite sex and the mechanics of starting a family.
There is really no difficulty in adding the idea of trans people to this.
Instead of saying "boys and girls are different" say "some people have different bodies"
When you start learning about hormones, explain how for nearly a hundred years now doctors have been able to give hormones to fix various ailments and that while most people will naturally go through puberty, there are people (cis, trans, intersex, other) that sometimes need to take medicine to make sure they grow strong and healthy.
And heck. I'm only a tutor, not a teacher yet so I have no say in what gets taught. But two of the girls I help, they're 9 years old, and they already have been taught about trans people.
About how a person feels inside doesn't always match the outside but that doesn't make them strange or bad. Sure, I don't know the ins and outs of how or what all they were taught, but they seem to understand it more fully than most adults I met.

AFAB children in my school were REQUIRED to wear skirts. The students kept trying to veto that rule, but it kept getting rejected, even in the winter time. "No, just wear stockings. No pants."
I'm a trans man who didn’t come to terms with it until my early twenties, and given that shit, I'm not surprised I went so deep into denial.

And that problem is 100 times worse with Marvel. I want to watch *some* of the Marvel stuff, but you're missing a lot of context unless you've seen everything that comes before, and I don't want to watch *all* of Marvel.

There are cases of children receiving hormone therapy in the 40s, and socially transitioning under the advice of doctors in the nineteenth century.
And even back during ancient times
