      @@minutemilitia6498 So being an emotionally and empathetically detached individual plus being a terrible father is now a good thing? The movie's whole point is that Mary Poppins wasn't there to help the kids, but to help Mr. Banks. The kids might have been a little bratty too, but because they were very young, thus requiring attention, and had lacked an actual paternal figure for most of their lives.

      @@anarchicphoenix6028 Yes, a father needs to be involved in the life of his children. However, we could use a lot more of Mr. Banks overall worldview these days. "Tradition, discipline, and rules" (as well as financial saving and prudence) are mocked by the movie and by our culture today, but we are all suffering for it. There's always a balance to aim for, and we've lost our balance in the other direction now. A father who is all play (hard to imagine such a "father" except by his absence) is no better than one who is all discipline and rules.

      All the more kickass because in an emergency he cared more about fixing his family no matter what than arrogantly pretending everything was fine. He sings this song because he thinks everything's ok.
      When he does learn things are not ok he doesn't repeat the song or pretend or avoid. He kills his boss with a pun because his kids need him to smile and his kids are in fact important to him.
      Putting his money where his mouth is: his home needs fixing so he fixes it.

But what really makes Mr. Banks stand out these days is his embrace of tradition, discipline, rules, order, well-run household, etc. We could use a LOT more of that these days. Families and households are falling apart all over the place. We could use more men who take responsibility for their children/families/households.

      This sort of rigid, regimented lifestyle is shite. I love chaos and being able to do my own thing because I live alone.
      I actually don't want to have children partly because I know I'd have to repeat all that regimented routine from my own childhood and inflict it on my kids too.

    • @darthparallax5207
      @darthparallax5207 5 років тому +3

      I love both order and chaos. Chaos can cause problems if it goes too far. Order is only helpful when it's very necessary.
      My current lifestyle I don't use a bedtime but I do use a rigid wake up alarm and that's important.
      Rules without reasons are dumb. But rules backed up by experiment experience logic and a real goal and a motive to help are paramount.
      I remember when trying to find the right bedtime didn't work.
      Schedules are tricky things to solve. Because they are rigid getting the incorrect number hurts people. But they can be tailored like shoe sizes and once you have the one that fits you won't want it to be chaotic anymore.
      After All you don't wear five different sizes of shoe!

      That's the point of the movie. They are a fractured family

    • @darthparallax5207
      @darthparallax5207 5 років тому +21

      Fractured, though, is relative.
      George is right about anarchy and ghastly mess.
      As messes go, the ones he has are comparatively small and simple, expediently resolved by going kite flying.
      The Banks parents may not be perfect but they are both loving and affluent and when shown their errors they caringly change because they do value order and if there is a problem it does need taking care of. Its unfortunate it does not get noticed sooner but as soon as it is recognized it is an urgent matter.
      Many people suffer under the rule of much worse than a silly person failing to notice things: leaders who have spent years and decades admitting to a problem, unable to solve even the smallest issue, and refusing even to admit that perhaps a change in leadership should be given a trial.
      Banks would not tolerate a problem persisting after he is aware it exists. He would even go far outside his comfort zone to solve it, because his house being in disorder is not acceptable.

      Also in 1910 was the year Portugal's Constitutional Monarchy was overthrown by radical republicans. Our last King was D. Manuel II, he ruled from 1908 to 1910 and he attended Edward VII's funeral and he was friend's with the old monarch. I can say 1910 was a terrible year for you Brits and specialy for us Portuguese :(
      LONG LIVE THE MONARCHY!

      it is the British way. Though Americanisms are seeping in even to the BBC.
      I will concede that it makes a certain deal of sense to pronounce 'schedule' as one pronounces 'school', but English is a rebel for avoiding regularities in its grammar and pronounciation.

    I can't help but think about the downward trend of his Lordship Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham (Downton Abbey.) His lot, the aristocracy, is heading downward, whereas Mr Banks' upper middle class is buying up the castles that the nobles can no longer afford to keep up or pay the taxes on....
    Such was the changing times then... 🤔
