    Nice video Mike! And that Seiko is 100% 70's, in a really good way. Thanks for leaving in the hiccups, it really helps to show both what can go wrong AND what the correction is. Very nicely done video and fantastic work again. Cheers!

    i have always wanted one of these movement holders. and the rotating lidded parts holder tray you have. never have been able to find those over here in the US. Also I wanted to say, Thank you. this video just helped me to repair a 1971 king seiko superior chronometer special edition with a gorgeous silver linen dial. Thanks again for the super informative video!

    I wonder why this brilliant date changing part of the movement wasn't used on the 56 movements with their crappy plastic wheels. I guess this came later. Cheers for a superb video Mike. One of your best!

    Having worked on a few of these myself, seeing you put on the keyless parts and calendar mechanism before the hour wheel hurt my soul. Definitely been there!

      I’m so used to the hour wheel being the last thing I just didn’t think.
      Painful indeed as you have to remove quite a bit to put it to correct the mistake.

    Hey Mike, thanks for posting the "Good, the Bad & the Ugly" of watch restoration. It's amazing how some other channels show a restoration that is trouble free and goes perfect! Your past videos have inspired me on the hobby and I'm giving it a try. One thing I'm trying to figure out is how you find time with work and family? Me , it is tough to balance both. Thanks again and talk soon.

      Very late nights is the answer! My passion is an obsession so they just put up with it. When I was working on other peoples watches I could make a little bit of money which was an insensitive but I’ve stopped that now. UA-cam does not pay anything meaningful for the views I get unfortunately.

    An interesting video, and beautiful watch. The diagonal is longer than the width, so the watch is bigger than it is (sounds like a tardis watch!) I've got a round watch that sort of colour and always had a black strap on it, which I think is fine.

    Lovely job, esp. for your early goes at that fascinating and complicated movement. The yoke looks like it was drawn by Dr. Seuss in Mechanical Drawing mode.
    It is a striking watch, and SO 1970s. Like an episode of "Kojak." Lol. The Milanese bracelet is the better choice between those two straps, for sure, and very thin and gleaming as it does -- although the brown leather briefly evoked watching the Masters Tournament circa 1978 when Gary Player won at Augusta, Georgia USA. It also resembles the current Seiko Recraft SNKP23/25/27 (esp. the 25). INTERESTING: That Milanese looks very, very close to the one on my new Lilienthal Berlin LE Chrono III. I think those stout steel (?) sleeves that surround the spring bars while tightly abutting the lugs might obviate the occasional need for a NATO strap? It looks to me like those sleeves would prevent any spring bar from bending and popping out under duress??
    I would love to see that case get the full bright polish treatment but I understand why you left it relatively untouched. It looks great anyway. I'd love to have one and it's nice (!!! :) :) to hear the way you got it. I think you know why! :) Very impressive work/watch/story.

    Another neat video! Not sure what to think about the strap/ band situation. I would incline a bit toward a gold color recasing, because to my eye stainless and brown don't mix. On the other hand, there are stainless accents on the dial. Would be a quandary for me. Oxblood leather? Just not sure. But thanks for the video! Off to the review video!

    you know what helps me to seat the train wheels into the bridge on the reversing wheel style of auto Seiko's like the 52s 56s and 83s the tapping trick. the first time i saw someone do it i was like "what wizardry is this, this cant be real" yet when i tried it for the first time, worked like a charm. you gently tap the movement holder on the sides and the slight vibrations of the plates and wheels causes the wheels to seat themselves (95% of the time, sometimes you get a stubborn movement XD)

  • @hamishspencer
    @hamishspencer Рік тому +1

    Great job! I think the reason the leather strap didn't quite work was that the strap was a reddish brown whereas the dial tends towards a greenish brown. I'm sure you could find a brown leather strap in a different shade that would work. The Milanese looks very nice.

    • @MyRetroWatches
      @MyRetroWatches  Рік тому

      HI Hamish, agreed the brown was not the right shade but for me with the shape of the case being so angular I felt any strap would not look quite right, for me anyway. Thanks for watching.

    For sure Daini have introduced a good movement at the time, instant day date change, hi beat, durable, good timekeeping. Seiko later introduced 4S35 movement based on 52xx series and that was an answer to eta2892-a2. Better than modern Seikos of today.

      @MyRetroWatches  Рік тому

      Watch oil is a big can of worms . There are many types and uses and everyone has their own opinion.
      What we would all agree on though is the sheer expense of them. £30+ Uk for 5ml

    Definitely milanese strap in this case. Nice job. To bad Seiko does not use high beat movements today in their watches in lower and mid price watches. Did eye meself similar Ali hand tool but it had no stand. Did you have to buy separately the stand?

  • @ro63rto

    Hi Mike, I'll be watching this on the big screen as I have a 5206-5080 LM that works but when the crown is in the date set position it won't turn.
    I know the 56** series has that failure point but the 52** are not prone to this.
    Hopefully I'll spot something amiss when I compare them.

    5246s are class. But for the industrial finishing on them. They are absolute work horse of a movement. So many still ticking away after 50-60yrs with barely any servicing.

      Most if not all 70s Seiko movements are tough and durable. I did a video years ago on what I called my Rat watch. Its a 6106 but it was battered and left for dead but I still managed to get the watch going again. Seiko's never die
